Michael Myers wears special, orthopedic sponge shoes that soak up spills. Little known fact, asylums in the 60's were pretty sketchy and the administration often figured, "Hey, if we're gonna have a bunch of mentally deficient patients shuffling around, we may as well put them to good use cleaning the floors."

You forgot a very important detail at the beginning: Michael had already broken out at the beginning of the movie. When Loomis arrived at the sanitarium, all the inmates were walking around outside. Michael wasn't allowed to wander around, he had already overpowered the staff long before Loomis arrived. They believed that they were arriving at a place with Michael locked up tight with guards all around him and there was no need to bring their own guard. I would say their real mistake was not reversing right out of there the minute they saw inmates walking around outside.
That is 100% true.
I used to work at a place similar to Smith's Grove back around the time this movie was filmed.
If you pull a fire alarm, the exterior doors open. In those emergencies, the staff cover the doors to ensure the patients don't wander off and get lost or injured. If Michael had overpowered any of the staff, it would explain those patients wandering around in the rain in hospital gowns. At least one door wasn't covered and patients got out.
Loomis knew something was wrong but, since there were no cell phones back then, he would have had to either use a phone there or find someplace else with a phone. By the time the situation had become clear to him, Michael had already attacked Marion and stolen the car.

As a teenager in the 80's I remember having a nightmare that Meyers was coming after me, my niece and nephew. We ran out of my sisters apartment and around the complex back to her kitchen window where we climbed in. When Meyers tried to follow us through the window we grabbed knives and a screwdriver and stabbed him. Fearing he'd come back to life we hacked him up and flushed him down the toilet in pieces. Very vivid nightmare.

Halloween happened in 1978, they didn’t have lockdown police to the best of my knowledge. She at best might have convinced them to send a janitor to walk around the outside of the building. Love what you guys do!

Yes, this is all true.
With some of these older movies, they make some comments that assume things operated the same in 1978 as they do in 2023, but that's not the case.
Just like there were no lockdown procedures for schools, there were also no stalker laws, so alerting the police probably wouldn't have helped much. Back then, the police couldn't do anything unless the stalker did something aggressive. They likely would have told her to call if the person did anything.
This video is living proof that Laurie Strode wasn’t a badass in the 1st movie. It took a bit for her to become whom she is now in the Halloween movies.

Me and my wife were recently talking about the great driving skills and amazing sense of direction Michael myers possesses despite being very mentally handicapped and not being outside of a psych ward since being a young child
I don't think Michael was at all mentally handicapped. There was no indication of that at all.
He is definitely unstable, but that doesn't mean his brain can't absorb information like how to drive.
With his silence and ability to wait 15 years before returning to Haddonfield, it is entirely possible that he observed people driving him around and just learned that way.

Just put the gear in Drive, step on the accelerator pedal, and away you go. You can figure out the difference between the accelerator and the brake pedal just by watching people drive you around. Or maybe watching stuff on TV, like Starsky and Hutch, or maybe The Dukes Of Hazzard.

Wasn't the motivation behind Michael killing his sister that she should have been babysitting him but instead she was canoodling with her boyfriend? That's why (to begin with) all of the victims were supposed to be babysitting?
I think that depends on which canon background lore of Myers you wanna follow, that might have been one of them, but i seem to recall that in the first movie it is never explained why he took the knife and stabbed his sister other then the fact that he was a child who was suffering from psychopathy and sadism tendencies, and that combo made him curious as to what would happened if he stabbed someone, like a child wanting to pull the wings off a fly and see it running around, he wanted to see the reaction, and what would happen, and then he gained a taste for it.
I always assumed he had an Oedipus complex and kills his sister as a way of resolving the deep shame he feels about his unnatural sexual
