A lot of these tactics in the intro would either get you shot or charged with desertion or desecration of the dead... both of which would result in you getting shot.
He’s just not really thinking about the situation, then there’s a ton of physical things, like thinking hitting an infantry mine with a helmet would set it off
Being in the fetal position while getting shot at from below just puts your vital organs closer to the danger. While also increasing the chance of internal ricochets.
@@austinlester4077 That's only if you're taking fire from a horizontal direction. If the fire is coming from above or below you actually want to stay relatively vertical to minimize your exposed area. That's why infantry would charge if they were caught out in the open during an artillery barrage, you minimize your exposure while getting out of the bombardment area.
Neither the FETAL position nor laying horizontal would not have saved anything. Those were German 20mm and/or 37mm rounds tearing that airplane to bits. Getting hit by one of those bullets is almost instantaneous death regardless of how you position yourself, especially a 37mm.

7:29 I'm pretty sure a helmet won't trigger a landmine. It needs to be a certain amount of weight, which is why you can sometimes crawl over it since crawling distributes your weight over a bigger area.
Besides aren't most mines anti tank mines anyways since it would make them actually worth it (mines have a cost in production, it is actually terrible to spend too much in killing a few infantry as an AT mine wouldn't be more costly in production and destroying or damaging a tank is much more worth it)
@@Stormyy6310 I think the point of antipersonnel mines is as much about area denial as actually doing damage to infantry. You can't charge your troops through a minefield without taking large amounts of casualties and alerting the enemy. This allows your enemy to focus defenses like machine guns and snipers on a small number of approaches and turn them into killing fields.
@@Stormyy6310 Sometimes it's better to damage an enemy than to kill them. Like hand grenades. Some weapons are meant to greatly damage soldiers so they will call for backup and need people to drag the injured soldier away.
@@SunwardRanger83 Yes today mines are practically only used for area denial, slowing down your enemy's offensive (I mean just look at the war in Ukraine and the Ukrainian offensive in its early phase), I wasn't saying that mines aren't for that, I was saying that AP mines (especially at that period) like they're shown are very expensive to produce (as expensive as an AT mine if not more) and thus would be extremely uncommon, there wouldn't be AP mines also because this is the Atlantic Wall and it covers a huge portion of land and Germany has no way of knowing where the Allies are going to land thus they wouldn't have placed expensive AP mines in a random place, most of the mines they and all countries in WW2 placed were anti-tank mines (AT)
@@Stormyy6310 Well, I guess I learn something new every day. I was operating on the assumption that AP mines back then would have been fairly cheap, like they are in modern times. I had no idea that AP and AT mines were comparable in cost back then, thanks for the info.
You're not necessarily correct about the mines. Many landmines have a higher weight needed to trigger them, otherwise they'd go off when placed, or when any small animals stepped on it. This is why they can use some small animals to sniff out the explosives nowadays.

Spinning the helmet to check for land mines was literally the dumbest thing I’ve heard in a while. 1. Landlines, even AP need multiple pounds of pressure to work. 2. the helmet part wouldnt really work if im right because mines require a certain amount of kilograms weighing the button or whatever down and i dont think a ww2 paratrooper's helmet would be enough to detonate one, alternatively a possiblity would be to actually keep looking down while in a crouching position going really slowly and calling any landmines out as they cant be hidden perfectly without them getting too low to be detonateable or would explode prior to pressure being applied
lol... ww2 helmets and flack jackets might stop some low energy fragments but they sure aren't stopping some nearby 120mm AA round or a direct hit from 40mm or 20mm aa rounds. Though I'm not sure they were actually low enough for smaller rounds to be hitting the plane in the first place. And rolling a helmet along the ground wont be enough weight to trigger many if not most landmines. it's not a "why i would survive," it's "what gives you the best chance of survival," no matter how unlikely
