It's named after the ALLIED (Not American) Battle for Normandy (not invasion)- Operation Overlord, or D-Day. But this movie has loads of little things in it that make it so smart, like the Americans can't understand German, but Chloe can, so you only get subtitles when she's there as only she can understand them, it's also why you get subtitles for French as one of them can understand it. Also, a surprising amount of main characters survive for a horror movie, none of that final girl or a-moral people die only stuff. And it really shows that some of them aren't seasoned military men, they were plucked out of their homes to fight because they were needed, they're openly scared for their lives. The people are also not all being experimented on, they're being used to filter the black liquid in order to make the serum, the side effect of that causes the mutations in the townspeople.
I think the fact that J.J. Abrams pushed for this film to be largely made with practical effects instead of relying on CG is what made this movie work as well as it did. Even the "zombies" were practical effects and prostethics. I think the main thing that holds this movie back is the ungodly amount of lens flares. Ya know, now that you mention it, I now hold the headcannon that John Walker from The Falcon and Winter Soldier series is a relative of Corporal Ford from Overlord, and the something about their DNA is what allowed Walker and Ford to survive their respective "enhancement" serums.
I watched this film a while ago and I kind of enjoyed it but not a whole lot tbh, but your video made me change my perspective, I will be definitely re watching this soon!
My dad took me to see this movie when it came out, and he didn’t tell me a thing about it ahead of time. I think that made it into one of the best and most impactful movie experiences I’ve ever had

Thanks I watched it yesterday per your recommendation and you’re right-it’s good I never would’ve watched it otherwise. Now let me watch your recap. I stopped it not wanting to see any spoilers.
I had super low expectations as a huge zombie movie fan. Ended up watching it on a flight I couldn’t sleep on and was so impressed I watched it again the next day when I got home
This is one of the few movies i watched on theaters. I enjoyed every second of this movie from beginning to end and i wish it had gotten more recognition
Got about 2 minutes into the video before pausing and watching it myself. This is such a good movie I can't believe I haven't heard of it before. The first walk through the lab was just haunting..
My wife and I watched it in the cinema. I really was hyped for that, because I like Pulp WWII stuff a lot and the trailer looked better, than most of the B-Movies, which are natural to that genre. And boy, we both had a blast and really liked it. It works as a decent War movie from the start, felt gritty and down to earth and that setup is important to make the Zombie stuff more effective and it all went so well together. Criminally underrated.
I remember watching this movie with my dad one weekend as. From what I recall both of us enjoyed it, my dad thought it got a little absurd at the end, but he thought it was entertaining the whole way through. Thats probably the best way to describe this movie: “Absurd, but thoroughly entertaining.”
Me and my friend went and saw it in theaters! It was SO good! I had completely forgotten about it though until this video. The use of practical effects actually makes sense as to why I liked it so much lol
first time I can think of where the black dude SURVIVED to the end of the horror movie. Literally. ALSO he is a damn fine soldier for not just breaking down in full ptsd induced madness after getting to safety given what he witnessed. I WOULD HAVE! Its waaay under rated. And until now. I never thought of it like a "what-if captain america" but now that you say it it makes perfect sense!
I remember when this movie came out in theaters. I wasn't able to see it their and I only heard about it briefly from other people. When I finally watched it, I was thoroughly entertained and it exceeded my expectations, especially the airplane scene at the beginning. This movie definitely deserves more praise and attention. It almost reminds me of when the Thing suffered at the box office in the 80s, but has now become an underrated classic.
I went into this movie with incredibly low expectations but dang it's brutal and while a little slower paced in the middle once it cranks up at the end it doesn't stop. Loved this in theaters.
I was working at a theater at the time this came out, we did previews for employees of movies that were coming out that week after all the regular shows were over, and my god was it worth staying up till 3 am for
The opening scene with the pov of them falling from the plane is my favorite scene. The rest is a brilliant movie and that opening puts you right along with them
when he said it was like og cod zombies I paused the video and checked the movie out, I was slightly disappointed that there wasn't hordes of Nazi zombies being mowed down, but I still enjoyed it for what it was
I remember finding this on my TV, and I'm like, oh, a WW2 movie about D-Day. and I had never heard of this movie or seen the trailer before, so it was a surprise to see that this wasn't a normal WW2 movie.
10:35 And paul has been added to the list of "Children who got our characters killed because they are dumb children" list. Why is it always the kids man, they're like a bad omen for any movie character. You see one, you KNOW they're gonna get someone or many someones killed lol.
I was saw Overlord without ever seeing a trailer or even hearing about it. I was supposed to see something else but the tickets were sold out to the other movie and not wanting to cancel our plans it looked like a WWII movie from the random promo poster. The movie started 5 minutes before but we just went anyway. I’ll tell you what, expecting a completely different movie and getting a horror is one of the best experiences honestly. I’m a huge horror fan and I couldn’t shake the feeling that the movie was “filmed like a horror” and had a horror soundtrack but I just couldn’t confirm it until it reveals itself. It had its standard action shot and it’s environment pans, then it would switch to a creepy bird eye where the squad is being watched, or the eerie doom shot where the audience knows something is lurking but the protagonists don’t. Over all amazing imo
Super underrated movie. Really sad it didn’t get the love it deserved at the box office. Also, I think this is an excellent movie to get people that aren’t super into horror movies more interested in the genre.
I remember going in knowing almost nothing about this movie. I think I was on a date so the movie didn’t really matter. When the movie started and they began to drop out of the planes I was completely blown away at how intense yet beautiful that whole scene was.
This film has one of the coolest trailers. Saw it with am ex back at release, she hated it, but I didnt care whatsoever cause my jaw dropped because of the incredible pacing!
I even believed that there would be a black dude among the paratroopers in 1944. I liked every GI character, Boyce included. But there was no way there was a black Staff Seargent and a black paratrooper going into D-day. I did not care, it was a ZOMBIE movie. I was invested in every GI character. Great movie, and had Kurt Russel's son as the demo corporal.
I’d hesitate to call a 38 mil JJ Abrams flick a B-movie but otherwise loved the review, glad to see someone talking about it cause it deserves more attention 🙏🏾
Going in blind to this movie was the best thing I ever did. The only other film like this was SISU. Thought it was the usual WW2 movie and boy oh boy was I for a surprise. So well shot, acted and directed. Visual pleasure and just 10/10 on all aspects 😁
I remember I went and watched this with my ex. It was just the two of us, and that plane scene was intense in theaters. It had our full attention from start to finish, not once did we say a word. Just occasionally look over to see if we had the same reactions. It's such a good movie, I always re-watch it during October 🙂↕️ I love showing it to new people.
Went to see this movie with my friends when it came out. We were super excited about a new zombie movie but when it started, all of us were confused… instead of a zombie movie, it looked more like an animated Christmas movie… Finally, someone ran to get an attendant to let them know the wrong movie was showing. It was a very memorable night…
I was impressed when I realized this “zombies in WW2 action movie” actually had interesting and engaging character depictions and character development throughout the story. Chloe is a very awesome character and the actress portraying her really plays her character as a resourceful survivor while staying kind, loving, and vulnerably human very well. This is one of my all time favorite zombie films alongside Train to Busan. Never played COD: Zombies, though.

Trench 11 is a World War 1 film with the same premise as Overlord, It was released in 2017.
All you video
reviews are very awesome
caught it in theaters opening niche because i was still holding out hope it was connected to the clovey universe… although it wasn’t i was NOT disappointed
watched this film because ian de caesteker, from agents of shield, was in it. loved the whole film. such a unique presentation of the zombie genre, despite sharing things in common w/ COD:Z
J.J. Abrams and his lens flares
When the end credits plays. All you hear is edm music was unexpected honestly lol
Of course! I dont think its a masterpiece by any means but its definitely underrated, characters were fun to watch and the action was awesome. Scared me a few times! Ha!
Thanks I watched it yesterday per your recommendation and you’re right-it’s good I never would’ve watched it otherwise. Now let me watch your recap. I stopped it not wanting to see any spoilers.
I enjoyed it. I couldn’t believe how they We’re able to pull it off and it not be super cheesy. The place scene was very cool.
Upon first viewing of this cool ass flick, I totally was thinking Wolfenstein. Excellent video and great movie.
I had super low expectations as a huge zombie movie fan. Ended up watching it on a flight I couldn’t sleep on and was so impressed I watched it again the next day when I got home
I was shocked when I realized the Captain is Kurt Russells son.
Saw this with my cousin opening weekend at an empty theater room and we had such a blast with this movie! The sound quality was perfection👍🏼
I just watched this movie only watching one minute of your video. Thank you so much. This movie is absolutely amazing.
This movie just flows perfectly.
Start to finish, it keeps you locked in
I started watching the video, then stopped and watched the entire movie and now im back here to watch the video
It was just like Dredd, an absolute banger yet very little attention by anyone
This was a solid, entertaining film and I’m glad it’s getting the attention it deserves.
The rest is a brilliant movie and that opening puts you right along with them
The intro in theaters was really something to see dude
when he said it was like og cod zombies I paused the video and checked the movie out, I was slightly disappointed that there wasn't hordes of Nazi zombies being mowed down, but I still enjoyed it for what it was
So happy to see this movie getting some love!
This movie was fantastic. Jovan Adepo was phenomenal. Most movies have you waiting for the action, this one had me waiting for a breather.
PLEASANTLY surprised by this movie and how good it is. The two one take shots that begin and end the movie were true scene gems.
I remember finding this on my TV, and I'm like, oh, a WW2 movie about D-Day. and I had never heard of this movie or seen the trailer before, so it was a surprise to see that this wasn't a normal WW2 movie.
This is my favorite movie! Underrated definitely, also could’ve used more zombies in general lol.
My father got this movie completely unaware of what it was. He jaut thought it was a ww2 movie, and it was so unexpected.
The opening was amazing, the living head lady was a sight to behold, the gore is really realistic
10:35 And paul has been added to the list of "Children who got our characters killed because they are dumb children" list. Why is it always the kids man, they're like a bad omen for any movie character. You see one, you KNOW they're gonna get someone or many someones killed lol.
This and alien outpost are the two most incredible "obscure" movies I've ever randomly found on a streaming service
As a production designer i loved this movie, the set design, props and practical gags were all really good, wardrobe was badass as well
Super underrated movie.
I saw this movie in theaters! I went in without much commercial viewing previous to it. I really enjoyed it and want to see it again.
Great movie remember seeing it in theaters, glad to see it get some love
just finished the movie and bruh this is by far one of the most fire concept for a war movie-- very underrated since its not talked about
Going in blind to this movie was the best thing I ever did. The only other film like this was SISU. Thought it was the usual WW2 movie and boy oh boy was I for a surprise. So well shot, acted and directed. Visual pleasure and just 10/10 on all aspects 😁

"We wait for the green light."
"If we wait any longer, there won't be any fucking green light!"
Weird War X is a really underutilized concept in media. I would kill for more of these.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I also think rewatches make the movie even better. It is an incredibly smartly written film!
