The three rules of being a rogue: 1. Never enter a fight you know you are going to lose 2. Only let your most trusted allies know you are a rogue *3. Rules are made to be broken*
Donovan: *in the afterlife to receive judgement* God of justice: Well done, lad! God of Righteousness: Haven’t seen one like you in ages, makes me proud! God of war: Almost as if you read my mind, every time! God of honor: We would have waited longer, to meet you. Donovan: *Internal screaming* God of secrets: Boi! You were the best by a long shot! Every other god previously mentioned: *visible confusion*
This is a very close contrast to "Die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become a villain" but it is instead "Die a villain or live long enough to see yourself become a hero" this is an amazing tale of redemption.
I love the con artists characters that are so good at acting and do it for so long, that they even fool themselves. They begin to adopt the beliefs and habits that they are acting out, they begin to care for the group that they have fooled for so long, they begin to crumble under the pressure of failing those that truly trust them and thus, in the end, redeem their guilt ridden conscience by revealing there true identity to his friends and take the bad guy out in a mutually assured destruction styled blazing glory.
Ya know, I thought you had me with the street thug hero tail but this... dang. Man your a good story teller. Also only 11K man your underappreciated. I'm definitely sharing your channel wit my roll playing friends.
This inspired a character that I gave to one of my friends who loves to play unconventional D&D characters. So the background of the character is; The boy dreamed of being an adventurer like any other boy, but was low born, a slum dweller. He trained with wooden sticks, swords so rusted that would turn to dust if they hit anything. Being from the slums he did learn the craft of the thief out of necessity and survival. Spotting traps and ambushes, sneaking past angry loan sharks, bullies and unknowing shop keepers. He even learned to pick locks. One day he was traveling by the local church, watching the usual occupants. Nuns, priests, monks, adventurers communing and such. Till there was a bright light and things changed. He was chosen by (insert god here) and was chosen to be their paladin. He was ecstatic. He would be what he dreamed of being, an adventurer. It wasn’t till he was sent to the main temple that he realized things wouldn’t be as he expected. The main church of (insert god here) was located in the heart of the noble district. All worshippers being of noble decent or nobles themselves. They believed that only nobles could be paladins. So with no formal training, no armor provided, nothing but a sword much too large for him and a single gold piece and medal with his god’s symbol on it he was sent away. Thus began his story. His armor became mostly leather over the years as he wasn’t strong enough for the paladin’s heaven armor. He did wear a custom metal shoulder mount that went down to his wrist on his right side. He used a short sword and a dagger, both with blessing of his god. Throughout his time as a paladin he used his skills from the slums more than any others giving him the ire of other paladins and to spite them for their prejudice he enjoyed his times at taverns and never really helped the nobles as much as steal from them My friend filled in the gaps and made the character his own. Being a Paladin that only really learned his skills from his god while also being a thief he took complete advantage of his skills

I'm not sure how that would work if he actually walked around like that normally, he wasn't exactly *not* Donovan. Maybe if it was specifically so he could appear a paladin, but I imagine the DM would have scrapped those for convenience honestly
You only roll if you can fail and if the DM is willing to deal with failure. He would only have to roll when he did something that might break character.

Cheese Wizard beautiful.
Isn't that the same recipe used for disaster?
QuestGiver that's what makes it beautiful.

Or, live a villain, die a hero
If you pretend to be something long enough, eventually that's what you'll actually become.
His group must’ve been dying of laughter throughout this entire campaign, I know i would’ve been.
Yes that would have been so funny
The amount of spot checks, perception, and bluff checks that must have been failed
@@bogustoast22none25 lol I would choose to fail them
@@piperaid kek
@@piperaid I would as well.

What a bittersweet tale. This trope needs to be played more often.
Kyo Mado in my humble opinion, no. The lack of playing them often is what makes them so beautiful.
bogustoast22 none Fair enough! I rather have this rare gem rather than an overused trope.
Caiphus Cain Hero of the Imperium is a good start
Maybe one on a sci fi setting but not a carbon copy like many tropes?
Donovan Graham, Hero of the Imperium.
The Moa Goddess I was thinking the same thing
This Rogue is accidentally everything my Paladin Sir Oswald the Obsequious aspires to be.
Heroes aren't mighty warriors, or brilliant commanders, they are people that stand up against impossible odds and don't back down.
this would be a good Anime.
Marshall Bernarte agreed. At leat an a short animated series of some kind
Yes!
"We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be."
Kurt Vonnegut spoke truly.
I love it everytime you say "DONOVAN GRAHAM" seriously I love the tone of your voice for this tale

Ciaphus Cain the non-paladin.
Lets be honest, this is a story about booty and how a man would do crazy things for some fine wizard booty.
To be fair... We all would. The ones that claim they don't lie.
The question is: By the end of the story what allignment would he have?
Neutral good.
All of his kind choices were based on lies and impersonation, which is unlawful, but he wasn’t being actively chaotic on purpose.
accidental good?
When you have a 20 in charisma
This sounds like the plot of a cartoon
Nobody got a stabilize for my man Donovan? Come on!
I choose to believe the bard picked him up
Oddly enough, I have a friend named Donovan Graham.
*HMMMMMM*
Either keep an eye on your items, or let him accidentally defeat all your enemies for you.
How does one get mistaken for a brave man
no name necessary by pouring all your points into Charisma.

Ask commisar Cyphus Cain
I wish I could fin a group that would be able to role play like this.
If I were donavan I would internally scream every dang second
The player must have been internally screaming.
this character is so deep man. turning rumors into legends
Fantastic story!!
Reminds me of Mat from the Wheel of Time.
Have to say, Mat was the more relatable character despite Rand being the main protagonist who was going insane, and Perrin also having a lot at stake.
Simply beautiful
Just how many disguise checks did he have to make? XD

This sounds like a Johnny Depp/Leonardo Dicaprio movie.
I think Leo would be a better fit
I've made a dude like this before. it was so fun.
“One often meets his destiny on the way to avoid it”
lol the wizardess just TELLS him he's gonna marry her. If that ain't some Borat wedding-sack shit...
This sounds like a comedy film.
Zorant0Zero you are first
Dose this story remind anyone of a certain Ci-Ci-Ciaphas Cain hero of the imperium?
Oh shit some with my first name
This sounds like Flashman
Naughty naughty paladin...
can you post a link to these stories??
Most of these are 4chan greentext stories.
This is all very Ciaphus Cain
Reminds me of a sun knight.
A little luck and a lot of bullshit will carry you far
