Back in the late 80s/early 90s anyone "alternative".. from metal, punks, skaters, goths, etc etc all hung out together because we were few and far between. I can remember being out in public, seeing someone 'different", and it was this sort of head nod of acknowledgement to each other. Like, there you are, I see you, power to the people. LOL

*sigh* and now we're back to those dark times- when I was still in high school last year most of my friends were post-emo which is a thing now I guess. We had so little in common but we both had band shirts and dyed hair so hey close enough.

tips for going to a goth club:
    1. don’t try to pick people up or get laid.
    2. don’t stare at anyone.
    3. if you dance, don’t touch anyone on the dance floor.
    4. don’t ask anyone to dance.
    5. it takes time to be accepted in goth scene. goths are ultra clicky

I'm a babybat who's finally getting involved with my local scene. On the 19th I plan to go to a local goth/industrial/EBM/dark electronic night. If I already have a couple of contacts in the scene and one of them's becoming a good friend of mine, how might that affect the amount of time needed for me to be accepted, if one of them's rather prominent as the elder goth of elder goths in my local scene?

A bit late on the uptake, so I'm curious to know how things went down at your first night out? I would say having someone introduce you to people will help for sure. Failing that, don't expect too much on the first night, but then again, if you are very open and friendly, you can probably meet a couple of people and that can get the ball rolling for you. Hope it went well...

I'm 19 and going to my first gothic/industrial night in a few weeks, should I expect people trying to pick me up? That makes me really uncomfortable but I'm not depriving myself of a night out just because of unpleasant people. Are the people at goth clubs (especially the guys) usually friendly and non-creepy?

I went to a Gothic convention for the first time almost a year ago and even though I was genuinely curious about it none of the people I asked were able to make it so I asked my friend who has special needs to go with me. However since he didn't understand what Goth was and dressed as a ninja turtle I was worried people would make fun of him saying that I was self conscious was beyond an understatement. But apparently some people there loved ninja turtles and asked take pics of him plus a majority of them turned out to be very polite and nice.

I was 13 when I went to my first Goth night (it wasn't a club, it was held in a pub just outside of the town centre) and I met some amazing people. At this point I was in more of a wired phase where I couldn't dress the way I wanted so I went for a more emo look because it was less extreme for my grandparents, so I turned up with my friend and her mum dressed in a my chemical romance shirt and skinny jeans and a leather trench coat. I still have the coat, I don't know what happened to the shirt. But even though I was obviously new and completely out of my depth they actually took me under their and showed me music and taught me about the history of the subculture. I would of found the gothic subculture on my own but to have people around you that take the time to help you and teach you is kind of amazing. That first night I found my people. From a very young age I listened to Goth, metal and punk because of my dad, my mum was a Goth (she died when I was 4) I listen to jimmy Hendrix and Janice Joplin because of my granddad. I had a good start musically.

I'm 21, and I grew up in rural Wisconsin. I still live here, and it sucks as a goth. In my freshman year of high school, there were a good few in the small town high school I went to. But as I got older, I was the only "outlandish", and "gothy" type person left. I didn't fit in, but that's ok. Eventually I want to move to Pittsburgh, where I will meet people like me, and perhaps personally experience the goth subculture for the first time and my first goth club.

Angela Benedict I've heard mixed things about the clubs in Seattle; that they're freakin' awesome or that they're loaded with a bunch of elitist snobs. But I'm totally not going to let them stand in the way of me having a good time. If they give me grief, I'll make sure to blow my wine breath at them! 😂

I am 46 and I have never been to a Goth Club. The closest I ever came was at WGT in Leipzig last year after seeing VNV Nation at Agra Hall on the Saturday Night. After the show I wandered into the cafe next door, there was a DJ and people dancing, but the music was very ungoth. It was all classic rock stuff but people were really getting into it. I sat down and tried to comprehend it all. As soon as Abba’s Dancing Queen started playing, I was up on my feet heading for the nearest exit, much to the girls amusement that was sitting next to me. It was a memorable night to say the least.

My first goth bar was around 88-89... thereabouts anyway and was in Montreal. It was called Mars and it was in a back alley and it was downstairs (how underground can you get, right?), it also had a system of tunnels that were rounded and really looked like something out of a troglodyte cave! This maze (there really weren't that many tunnels but at the time it seemed like you could lose yourself in there) opened up to the main room and it was dark which made the bar stand out and there were vamp-looking people sitting around or dancing and the whole thing was very intimidating but oh so cool at the same time! Naturally I didn't have the look yet so I kinda stood out like a sore thumb but that didn't deter me and I soon started going to other clubs, especially Foufounes Electriques or Foufs for short (which translates to electric butt cheeks in French lol) and much like you described, the scene back then was a big mash-up of all the alternative styles into one same place and everybody got along generally speaking, and there were a lot fewer fights than in the normal clubs downtown; mind you, the bouncers were HUUUGE and would chuck your ass down two levels of metal stairs without any hesitation, so people knew better than to start shit for bullshit reasons.
As far as tips go for the new club-goers (goth or otherwise), I SECOND the mint/gum tip!!! I would also add, take a bloody shower before you go out and use DEODORANT FFS! Also, wash your clothes regularly! It doesn't matter if you can smell them or not, bodies make odors over time and if you don't wash your clothes as well as your body, you WILL stink, I don't care what YOUR nose tells you! TRUST ME on this! DOUBLE this if you are a smoker and/or have pets, especially cats; again you may be used to the not-so-subtle undertones of feline urine your clothes have picked-up, but I guarantee you the rest of the world is not and you WILL stand out as Pepe Lepew! SO ya, soap is your friend, use it. Jackets CAN be cleaned or at least aired out... If you use perfume, don't overdo it and for the love of all that is of good taste, don't buy cheap stuff, we CAN tell the difference! There simply is no substitute for quality products.
Seems it was your birthday, so happy birthday! Love your channel! Keep 'em coming! Oh and happy October!
    Cheers!

I still remember my first goth night, in 1999; it was called Temple of Goths (and has later split into two different club nights) and the venue, which was a tiny club called Burdl, no longer exists. Before then, I never knew there were other goths in my home town, and discovering it was amazing! Even though I went on my own, I had a lot of fun and made a few friends before the night ended. I still have this little pang of nostalgia when I think about it.
But my most memorable goth club experience was my first night in Slimelight. Compared to all those fabulously looking people, I felt totally underdressed and very, very inadequate. Then I got drunk and stopped worrying, and had the time of my life.
Packing light - I couldn't agree more! I swear by my little backpack, or a belt with pockets, depending on what I'm wearing. You don't need a lot of stuff at the club anyway, and if you forget any essentials, like eyeliner, someone's bound to let you use theirs if you need to top up.

Haha, all of this. Where I live the alternative scene is close to non-existent, but we have a bar here where I noticed a few regulars show up for any of the local bands playing. I didn't feel like going by myself, so I brought a friend along. Now, I have been to that bar before with other people so it wasn't my first time, the difference was that there were far less people this time for the band playing (and because the scene is close to dead in my city nowadays). The bar is divided into two rooms, one with the small stage and a lounge room so I took up a seat where I could drink and see the stage from the other room while listening to some of the most amazing songs I ever heard a local band play...they are really good.
So, me and my friend are playing cards and enjoying a couple of drinks halfway through when this guy walks over to us, saying we should join them near the stage to support the band. Because of shyness, I certainly didn't feel like it and I was actually waiting for a song I heard prior (thank you youtube) so I kinda politely declined that offer and remained seated. At that moment and until recently before I thought back on the entire situation, I actually thought he was being elitist..? Like, he walked over to us saying we should go support the band in a rather rude way, as if us sitting there listening to the music was not support enough. But now I kinda realized he probably just wanted to bond, like, set a way for us to be part of the group.
Of course, when the song I was waiting for came up, I went over to the stage in support of the band and thanked them when we left and what not, but...this experience still left a sour taste in my mouth for one reason or another...and I still feel like that bar is a bit elitist, like the atmosphere is a bit heavy when I am there, so I never wished to go there since.XD
I think your advice on being yourself is very important...and in my case, I remained myself, I didn't do what I didn't feel like doing and I feel very good about myself, despite it being a bit of an awkward experience.
Then again, no matter how many concerts I go to, I still feel awkward about them...not sure why.XD
Anywayz, thanks for the awesome video, like always!

That night sounds like one hell of an amazing party. Way more exciting than any Goth club or night I've been to in the UK. The gargoyles and fire-breather sound awesome! Your bagel sounds delicious. Clubs with locker-rooms are great. I take two bags - one for my coat, brolly, spare shoes (I live in the Highlands of Scotland, this is necessary most of the year :P) etc. and then a small bag with my money, mints and touch-up make-up into the club and put the other bag in the storage locker.
DRUNK YUPPIES INVADING THE DANCEFLOOR. That still happens. Not as bad as drunk chavs trying very, veeeeeery hard to chat up all the girls in corset.
It's taken me a long, LONG time to learn to dance nicely, because I'm dyspraxic and generally a terrible dancer. I used to just flail and wiggle.

My first time at a goth club was a few weeks ago with my goth boyfriend and it was so much fun. I just kind of vibed to the music and I didn't really stress about the way I was dancing and just moved intuitively to the music having fun with it, he and I ended up and getting drunk and dancing together anyway LMAO. Right before we went in, he asked me to be his girlfriend and it was the best night ever. Going to another with him tonight!

First "alternative" club was a place on the college strip in Lafayette, LA called Nightcaps. Cramped, loud, but there was EVERYONE there! The regular DJ was incredible; the owner was a shitball. But it was a start.
First actual Goth club? The Blue Crystal/Crystal/Whirling Dervish/Dervish in New Orleans. You knew it by what it was named when you started going there. Long bar on one side, cramped booths on the other, dance floor crammed in the back, and don't even think about the bathrooms. But the music was great, the people were fun, and it was where I felt at home.

Oh so many memories! What you were describing of your first club actually reminds me a lot of the early raver days here in Canada-land. Looking back, it was so weird that we were even allowed to go to these things considering that you had to call the promoters at a certain time to find out where the hell the venue was and it was always a pop up at a warehouse somewhere secret.
And I had a good laugh over the Lucretia = cardio thing. Only because I know it's true. The other song to look out for is Hurt by NIN. I still remember the first time me and all my friends were like "We fucking love this song!!" only to go out there and realize it's kinda really difficult to dance to and pretty slow but by that point we'd all committed. It was when we all learned my favorite lesson of the goth club (at least for here): No matter how silly you think you feel, someone is usually busting out their best moves nearby and you're the ones having the most fun.

    • @angelabenedict
      @angelabenedict  8 лет назад

One day I will come to Canada! I've been really dying to check out the clubs there. Those secret raves were the realllly dodgy ones!
Sisters of Mercy is responsible for some of my more serious next day leg cramps XD I couldn't imagine trying to dance to 'Hurt'. That's commitment right there!

    • @thearmchairscholarsguide1894
      @thearmchairscholarsguide1894 8 лет назад

Angela Benedict I haven't been to the ones here in my new home yet but the goth clubs where I was were sadly on the move a lot. We had a small goth community but it was resilient as fuck because every time we lost another club, we had another person pick up the torch. I've heard good things about the clubbing atmosphere here out on the west coast though. :)
And yeah, that's a pain I remember well. I still recall when we decided to honor a friend who had been banned from the club for *insert reason here (I never did figure out what he did and it was pretty much an urban legend after a couple of years)* by doing his "one foot stomp" dance. That, my friend, was a mistake and a half.

The first time I got to go to a goth club was when I was eighteen, almost a decade after I entered the scene. I think it was Das Bunker. I pretty much went on a club spree. I went to Eternal and Perversion also. Das Bunker was my favorite. I move to San Francisco a couple of years later and started going to Death Guild. It's not as good as Das Bunker, but I still enjoyed it. I went to Death Guild's 20 year anniversary and there was a goth opera singer, aerial performers, and the lead singer of the Information Society performed. There were vendors with spooky cookies and such. It was a lot of fun, but Das Bunker remains my favorite. I haven't been clubbing in like six years now.

I've only been to one club and was surprised to see there were snobs even in the goth scene. It was packed and they insisted on having lots of space so they could dance, so inconsiderate. There was also a guy pretending he was trying to get through the crowd and all he was doing was rubbing his junk on girls... ick. Oh and a fight broke out inside too, maybe I shouldn't judge on just one visit to the club... If anything else it was nice seeing people of all ages/races there.

It was Das Bunker in LA 2 yrs ago. I went to see Hocico, I felt bad for them cause the guys that started fighting knocked over the keyboard mid song. I don't know, this whole scene seems really complicated and evaluating. I like techno clubs cause all sorts of people go there, it's really neutral and you don't have to look, act or dance a certain way...
