I find it “funny” they used Black Friday as their example of “true goth” when she would be one of the first to tell them how wrong they are. She’s even discussed this issue as well, so they obviously weren’t paying attention at all.
onyxfaith I totally agree! I’m pretty sure Black Friday would be sad to hear people mentioning her to be mean to other people. They’re just insulting her!
onyxfaith I agree 100%. The reason she is so f'n awesome is because she is so accepting and positive. She chooses to live the goth lifestyle 24/7 365. Some of us dress up all the time, some of us are "weekend Goths" where we dress up for clubs, parties or concerts, like myself. I wear black 99% of the time but I'm not dressed up in my gorgeous Goth clothing whenever I leave my house. I applaud Black Friday, Adora batbrat etc for being "on" all the time, but an extreme look is not necessary to be considered a goth. There are people who love Goth music, fashion and culture but you would never know it, because they do not dress up. Are they still Goth? Yes because they appreciate and embrace the subculture. Goth is state of mind not the clothes you wear. It amazes me that even in the Goth scene, you have elitist, narrow minded idiots who still think this way. 😝😝
I love both Angela and Black Friday, it frustrates me to see people use her to try and put other goths down, because she's not about that kind of thing at all. Anyone who watches her knows that she's all about being yourself and doing what you love, regardless of what others think. That's why her look is so extreme, it's how she loves to look, it's what feels genuine to her. But she by no means puts forth the idea that there are rules and rankings....
Funny thing is, that Black Friday herself don't even see it like this. It's a shame that some people use her to tell others they should leave the goth community. And I (personly) think, it does not matter how you look. And if you don't look goth "enough" how cares? The importand thing is that YOU are happy with it and feel good/pretty!
For me being goth, like being into comics, sci fi, fantasy, role playing games, computer games or what ever your into, is not in how you dress. It's not in how long your been into it or indeed how much you know about it. It's in the passion you have for it. When you meet someone, whether it's at a convention, a goth club or what ever and you stand there having an impassioned discussion about a certain band or comic or movie and you can see the excitement dancing behind their eyes. It's not in the way you dress or wear makeup, it's that something behind the eyes. That's what being a goth is about.
This. So much. I’ve been told so many times over the years that I need to “improve” or “amp up my look”, because if I don’t, I’m somehow a conformist... doesn’t make any sense. Pressuring me to get my nose pierced even after I object to that because it would affect my voice training “get it anyway! You’ll look better with it! Don’t be such a conformist!” I hate teasing my hair, and prefer it to curl naturally, but that’s somehow unwelcome. I’m of mixed race, but somehow, that isn’t often represented in the subculture. I work in an office that thankfully has a pretty liberal dress code. I can wear all seven sets of my ear piercings, I can come in wearing a Victorian looking skirt and blouse, and I can wear as dark of a lipstick as I want. I love having that freedom. However, there are days when I won’t feel like taking it to that level. Goth is about being yourself. People who shame you into confirming to that high, unattainable standard are only betraying their ignorance of what the subculture is really about. And they certainly don’t value individuality. Stay true to yourself, don’t let the bastards get you down.
LigeiaResurrected if I may ask, how does a nose piercing affect voice training? I spent a few years doing choir, up till my senior year of HS and never once heard that.
Denisse Orozco As a dramatic voice type training in the operatic technique, I do have to implement more tools and muscles in my face and body to execute my voice. One of them is flexing my nose downward. That’s a rather painful or uncomfortable thing if you have a piece of metal sticking in there. Every bit of your face acts as a resonator for your voice, the nose is one of them.
Denisse Orozco My pleasure! I’ve been doing operatic voice training in private/independent study for almost seven years now, and I have a brilliant and dedicated voice teacher to thank for the singer I am today. And I’m always happy to give some insight on voice training. :)
I love Black Friday, she is wonderful. The thing is she would NEVER say anything like that because she understands that it's not the crazy looks that make you "true" anything. Thank you, Angela. Even though I understand this it still helps to hear it from you- a person I respect. Thank you for helping me take another tiny step to one day finally fully coming out as being goth without the fear of these jerks telling me I'm not goth enough. Thank you so much 🖤
The power of makeup and unrealistic expectations are placed on the internet blinding people's opinions, some extreme looks simply do not appeal nor are practical to wear on the daily basis, jobs simply don't permit it. But when Goth night comes I do let my creativity flow as extreme or simple as I please!Great video Bella!
It would be really cool if your fans could send you pictures of themselves in their normal every day clothing and you could compile it into a video called "What goths really look like". :-)
This is upsetting. When I went to my first goth club in NYC, the diversity was amazing. Black, White, Hispanic, Asian, Muslim-- Every pigment represented and zero fucks given. We were all there to have fun and listen to great music.
The Girl Who Loves Blue I relate to this even now in Austin. Last weekend I went (for the first time) to a goth club. I genuinely had so much fun, but once in a while I would catch myself searching for another brown/dark skinned person... There was a few, but for a city that is "known" for being diverse, it sometimes doesn't feel that way.
That's very upsetting to hear that people talk like that :( I couldn't imagine that some people think less of a person because of their skin tone or lack of overextreme fashion :( But then again I think this is an online only phenomenon if I'm right. I don't believe one would ever be aproached in reallife for example a concert for not being "goff" enough. Those people are just nasty lil keyboard warriors and I hope that they don't scare people off to be part of the subculture! Everyone deserves a place in it and should be welcomed with warm hearts 🖤
I agree 100% I think it’s only an online thing. When people see other Goths from around the world it is an extremely happy experience. I just was going to work a few months ago looking extremely Goth that day and a girl stopped me and started crying because she had not seen any other Goths before and she did not care that I was Black we hugged and I started crying too. It can be a rare thing to find someone like you. But she did mention not having the latest brands I told her that it did not matter at all I buy clothing from forever 21 that are super Gothic 🤣 as long as it makes you happy. Lolita is about brands but regular Goth is not. I just feel bad that people think you can not be romantic because your dark its laughable are we not all trying to be Dark ?🤣 I just want to give them all a hug and tell them it’s ok and have fun.
I agree. I've never encountered this sort of mean girl behavior in real life. The things that people feel justified in saying to others online in cold blood they'd never have the balls to do in real life.
I wish I was born a decade sooner. To have experienced goth before the internet picked it up and replaced it with....whatever the hell you want to call this. Thanks again for being genuine and telling it as it is. That’s why you’re my favorite RUclipsr
I wasn’t referring to elitists specifically. I’m referring to the goth youtubers who constantly shove brands like killstar down people’s throats. I’m talking about a time before the internet where goth clubs weren’t so hard to come by. When the music was raw and the clothes were thrifted. Or at least not made my huge companies who are making a huge profit from those who feel they have to dress a certain way because that’s what their favorite youtuber does. I never got to experience that raw 80’s goth scene. That’s what I’m referring to.
There are still plenty of great parties and festivals around if you look for them. Not everywhere ofc, but in many places. The only thing that'll keep them blooming is us actually showing up for the events :)) Don't give up!
I live in a small country town in south Texas. Events I’ve heard of are few and far. I’ve had people tell me the goth scene is alive in Austin but they don’t realize how truly big of a state that Texas is. Maybe one day I’ll get to make the commute.
I dress very casually and I'm always sick and tired of people calling me a "poser " because I don't look like Voltaire or Caligo Bastet. I do like the "exaggerated " looks I see some goths pull off but, I don't have the confidence to pull it off, I have a job that has strict dress code and I live in the hood so if I walk around my neighborhood looking like the guy version of It's Black Friday, I'm setting myself up for a lot of bullshit. I also get some shit for being olive toned ..... which I can't help, I'm Puerto Rican.... like what do you want me to do, I can't tell my body to stop producing melanin and make me geisha white. Thanks for making this vid angela, I hope you're doing well 😺.
The Closeted Goth, I am also a Boricua-goth like you :) and had that problem mostly when I lived back home(you know why). Just be yourself and comfortable in your own style. We might have "piel con colorcito" but we can pull a nice style in our advantage 😉 no need to go to the "extreme", to be Goth as Angela said in the video since Goth is your essence. As long as it's your own style; which will represent who you are and how you feel. Voltaire's style is pretty simple at times and he is also from our Caribbean blood and looks pretty good with his piel con color. We cannot cover "la mancha de plátano" that we have (as one of my English teachers used to say) but we can work around it with style. I also work in a place with strict dressing code, I dress gothly outside work. At work just simple dark clothing, I can't wear make up there either so I do it during my days off or for the goth nights.
My level of extremity has definitely declined over the past year. I used to strut around in my lace, my corsets, skirts, my hair extensions and heavy makeup. I don't anymore. Partly because I got tired of "not being taken seriously by other goths" if I didn't look like that all the time. But mostly, it's down to me kind-of feeling a little more comfortable in jeans and t-shirts, leather jackets, denim jackets and such. Half of that is due to me just no longer wanting to spend three to four hours doing myself up for a night out, and being uncomfortable all night under layers upon layers and heavy makeup, especially when I'm drinking a fair bit and moshing and headbanging. The other half of it, is I just felt that with my personality, looking so girly just didn't really suit me. I'm one of the boys, I grew up with two older brothers, I'm a tomboy. I swear like a sailor, I drink heavily, and I'm quite vulgar with my humor. Though of course, I noticed my "old crowd" (if you could call it that, more just the clique I tried too damn hard to gain approval from) started to drift away when I began to re-claim my definition of my own identity, instead of boxing myself into their standards. I'm 25 in January, I'm too old to deal with that high-school mentality of changing myself to suit others. I am who I am, take it or leave it. And I've made new friends who embrace my true self. So honestly? Good riddance.
I'm a minimalist to the bone when it comes to my style; apart from the black clothes, shoes, and spooky jewelry, you could not tell i'm goth just by appearance.
You just keep giving me more and more reasons to respect you. The aesthetics of the subculture has become the most important aspect and it's sickening. Thank you for not jumping on the "I'm going to look extremely goth and I'll get more followers!" bandwagon. You're so genuine in every one of your videos and that is so refreshing.
I was accused of not being a “real goth” in a picture where I was rocking a Rozz Williams shirt, big fluffy hair, and pointy winklepickers.. I’ve been called a fake for dying my hair bright colors. A lot of people have said I’m not a real goth and I’m probably just cosplaying a character from something, haha. Nope! I’m 100% me. It doesn’t matter to these people what you actually look like, they’re just looking for an excuse to bully someone. They’ll bully people in full “trad” looks. Newcomers, pay them no mind, just do what feels right to you.
I hate when people compare you to black friday. I am sure she hates it too. She never appointed herself as a prototype that all goths must emulate and CONFORM to. The point is be yourself and be creative. I really think the people who mix it up, mix in different genres and influences, are the most stylish. Head-to- toe gear from one "goth approved" shop just makes you look like a catalog photo mannequin, not a unique person with ideas. Always add something unexpected to every outfit.
Great video! I generally just live in jeans and a t-shirt or other subtle goth looks, and save the more extreme makeup/outfits for events. Saves me time getting ready and also saves me from being stopped for pictures on a daily basis from people who think its just a costume
If anyone wants to know what a real Goth 'has' to look like, try visiting an actual goth club and look at the people dancing, having fun and singing along (more realistic with Joy Division and The Cure than Hocico or Haus Arafna, but you catch my drift). You'll see some people in very elaborate outfits and hair-dos, some Victorian inspired, some in bondage gear, others in DIY deathrock rags or just some black pants and a band shirt. It's all fine. Fashion and elaborate styling aren't for everybody, some people just want to meet friends or lose themselves in the music and morbid atmosphere without spending two hours in front of a mirror beforehand. Doesn't mean they're not Goth... However, I find this kind of symptomatic for a more general phenomenon. Maybe I'm reaching here, but it seems to come down to this: People crave rules. As much as Western culture fetishizes individuality, a lot of people (especially in certain age groups) still feel the need to conform to something and ostracize those who fail to conform. I think it's basically the same urge that makes some people convert to certain religions with strict sets of rules (and then often make a beeline for extremism). To be actually free-spirited and non-conformist can be stressful and frightening because it takes away the safety of familiarity and knowing what to expect. Maybe the people leaving such condescending comments and chastising others seek orientation and a corset of rules (no pun intended) within the Gohic subculture, ignoring the fact that *not* rigidly conforming to a set of pre-defined rules is the original point of a counter-culture...
This is obviously an old post, but I agree that that's likely a factor. Another issue is that teens especially are HIGHLY conformist, but also want to feel special at the same time. This happens bc they're trying to figure out who they are and sometimes make the mistake of substituting a trendy, predefined set of rules/asthetic for a personality. Most people grow out of this as they get older, but unfortunately there are many- seemingly more by the day- that are in a state of arrested development.
@@iceprincess2134 I agree, when I wrote "especially in certain age groups" somewhat vaguely above, I was thinking of teens and younger people in the process of puberty and establishing their own identity. It's a vulnerable phase for everybody, but obviously that can't excuse every amount of toxic behavior.
I remember people telling me I wasn't pale enough to be goth. I'm biracial with African American and Northern European, my skin is relatively dark. This wasn't by people within the culture though, as I was literally the only goth in my area, (still kinda am) it was by the people on the outside. I remember wanting to be pale so I avoided the sun when I could, however living on a farm with a lot of outside work kinda screwed me on that. Now days I'm much more comfortable with my dark skin tone. If anyone tells me I can't be dark skinned and be goth I usually just refer them to Aleah who was fabulous and beautiful as a vampire in queen of the damned.
Funnily enough, I was so excited when I first came across Black Friday, but then once I started watching your videos, I felt as though her channel was more like a vlog with goth flare, and not entirely delving into the goth subculture. Even though you dont look like a typical all-out goth, your content feels a lot more goth. So yeah, the fashion totally doesnt matter. It’s all about the culture. Stay awesome Angela! Edit: Not dragging Black Friday at all, I freakin’ love her!
Denisse Orozco Look at it this way maybe: Black Friday is part of the newer generation of goths, so her content is more of her sharing the things that interest her and the adventures she's going on as she travels through life in her own gothy way, whereas Angela got to be a part of the 90s goth scene and had spent a lot more time actively involved with the subculture, so her content is a lot more about her observations on goth now versus what it was then and how it's gotten here.
Thuringwethil Vaire exactly! Like my thinking on the comments of the “uber goths” is like “hey, there’s no wrong or right way to do goth, so quit being all judgy” :p
There's probably enough goth RUclipsrs out there doing the "What is Goth?" thing anyway. Freya's just doing her goth thing, like, this is my goth life. Occasionally she's done stuff about how to do goth hair, like, how to tease your hair up into a tower or deathhawk, but mostly it's like "I went to see this band" or "Here's my experience of WGT" and so on. I'm glad to see nobody is dragging her, but rather the Mean Girls element that holds her up as the standard. She's been through a lot of crap lately, and doesn't deserve to suffer for what other people make of her.
I like both of them. Black friday is likeable and has great look, and I like to follow her vlog as being a goth. However I watch Angela more because she is so beautiful, baddass and super educated at the same time!
I was kicked out a goth chatroom yesterday because i said i liked a certain song and the people in the chatroom said the song i liked wasn't goth enough so they blocked me
sanguis M They are Assholes. Probably just a bunch of mall Goths who haven't looked properly into what it's about. Aesthetically I'm not a goth, but the music of the old Darkwave or Industrial Rock (which is connected alot of the time) I absolutely love. Personally I think the idea behind the Gothic subculture is finding beauty in the things others won't. Don't be put down by uneducated Asshats. They actually think they are so diverse and different but the problem is they are part of a clique. Being Goth is practically saying "I'm Proud To Be Different Or "Strange" " and these People that kicked you out of their pathetic chatroom are just sheep, brainwashed just like everyone else today to believe they are "different" but to a diluted extent. If you want to be a goth you can, you are allowed to explore different versions of yourself, you are allowed to be who you want to be. It's up to you, no one else can tell you who you are, or tell you how to think. Never mind them, figure out who you want to be and if people don't like it then it just shows how culturally conditioned they still are. :)
They are assholes, when becoming goth you don't sign a paper saying you must hate each and every other song. Once in a while i hear a song in the maistream radio that i really like. Also my guilty pleasure song is Life is a Flower by Ace of Base it's so.... "lalalala fuck you i can't hear you i'm too happy"
I got called "basic" for liking Sisters of Mercy like... Hello? Goth classics? People are always going to be dicks about music, even music that's central to the scene.
That reminds me about a dickhead, who told me that I couldn't be Goth and also be a metalhead.the thing is that I am metalhead since 35 years and Goth since 26 years, and I felt incredibly good to be the both.
@@elisabethacronqvist7859 Same, was metalhead, picked up "only theatre of pain" by Christian Death on cassette just based on the name. Never the same after that. 45 grave to Bauhaus to Sisters etc.
I really needed to see this video. I am part of the 90s goth scene and was rejected then for my "innocent baby face" and lack of edgy clothing. I'm now in my 30s and finally in a job where I can wear a death hawk (not too styled but shaved sides are fine) and darker clothing, yet the memories of past rejection still make me a bit uneasy and make me question my own validity. It's so refreshing to find a voice that represents what I've always believed!
its a shame that a lot of people make goth something so vain as how extreme they look, some people can't have deathhawks because they have jobs or some cant dress extreme because they feel unsafe or have been treated horribly i had a 'friend' who wasn't even a goth constantly told me I was a poser because i didn't dress in full on goth mode
Real Goths accept and include EVERYONE, because we know what it's like not to be included or accepted. I'm a 44 year old goth and sometimes I wear a purple unicorn t shirt, jeans, and no makeup. And sometimes I'm so "goth" I get called the bride of the devil. Goth is not what you look like on the outside. It's a state of mind.
Thank you so much! When I first entered the scene (3 years ago) I saw so many goth youtubers who were wildly dressed, and this was simply out of reach for me which made me question whether I was goth or not. (despite my affinity for goth music and culture) I realized I didnt have to conform to the and finally realized it was okay!
Yeah... I get the same kind of comments... I think a lot of us goths are lonely because mainstream people think we look too weird and other goths think we don't look goth enough...
Best things is to find some genuine people who you can trust, goth or not. I have friends who aren't goth at all but they care enough to give my interests a chance and end up liking most of them!
The time I “goth out” is when I go to events, date night, or go out. I admire those who can everyday. But it’s not for me, due to my job but I still work with what I have everyday. I swear as time goes by, people pick the shit out of everything little thing. Love the video, gwah I love your channel!! 💕💕
This standard is wild to me, especially because it only holds up online. I can't speak to what the scene is like in other cities, but the majority of people in the subculture in Minneapolis are relatively low-key. Most people dress down for work and school, and if you go out to the goth club on any random night then you're going to see just as many people in jeans and tee-shirts as kilts and corsets. Most of us are in it for the music and the chance to socialize with people who have similar interests. The online part community doesn't reflect that reality very well.
On the internet it's mostly all tinsel and glitter. It's not about who you are, it's more who you seem to be. The nasty and toxic online Goths are chasing after an ideal, an illusion of what they think Goth is. It's like the movie "Mean Girls", just in Goth. If you don't amp up your look to a IBF level and dress hardcore Goth 24/7 364 days a year, you don't get the Goth card and you're not part of the club. They have never experienced Goth IRL and meeting real Goths of flesh and blood, so they don't know the nuances. Real life and the internet is not the same... You can take pictures of you, dressing Goth AF and put it on Tumblr or Instagram, buy expensive clothes from Killstar, Punk Rave, DollsKill, Dark In Love etc. but you can't buy experience and the feeling of being part of a community and belonging.
I don't dress goth all the time but I do like the style. I like a lot of different fashion styles. Sometimes I wear things that couldn't be considered goth at all but I love the subculture. On some days you wouldn't even know I was. I fear rejection because of this.
I'm literally the same way. I love gothy/grungy styles, but I also love pink and floral prints. I would love to consider myself pastel goth or pastel grunge, but I don't have nearly enough pieces of clothing to convey that.
A lot of those who seem to only want the 'extreme' goffick looks to count as 'twue goth' fail to take account of people who cannot fit into most of the goth fashion brands currently. Punk Rave does offer a decent range of sizes, but most places in the UK only carry up to a 14. Plus sized goths have to get more creative to make it work *Tim Gunn voice*, plus a lot of us work in environments where full GAF all the time would neither be appreciated or welcomed. And what does it leave for a night out? There is something utterly wonderful about putting on full goth regalia and makeup and going out out. It feels so fabulous! Sod those who try to tell people that you have to look like this RUclipsr or that RUclipsr or you aren't goth. They've obviously never been out on a goth night, or to a goth festival or indeed anywhere in meat space where goths gather (flock? swam? float? What is the collective for a group of goths?), you get so many variations and interpretations of goth at these, it shows that all you need is a love for the music and a desire to dress up ;-)
Gaaaaahhh, why would anyone leave those comments?!?!?! (Second batch) Not a great way to start the day... But hey - the fight goes on! Interesting video as usual.
I actually had an experience kinda like this just tonight at a club I went to. A local club (I say local as if it's on the next block when in reality it's an hour drive) hosts a goth night once a month. People there are always looking their best and you can't help but stare and try to absorb as much of it as you can while you're there. Now I love going up to people in clubs and complimenting their attire or something that really sticks out to me. Not because I want to build some BS friendship based off flattery. It's because I honestly like something they've done and I need need NEED them to know that they are rocking their look. We all need a genuine confidence boost sometimes. Side tracking. I saw a girl at the club and she kinda sauntered up to a group of us because she was acquainted with one of us. She looked wonderful and she knew it and she wore it proudly. Good on her. But my god, I don't think I've ever encountered a ruder and more stuck up human being. But she seemed to think she could be that way... just because she was dressed "more goth" than us. We were all pretty appalled by it since everyone there is usually pretty nice and jokingly decided she'd had a bad day. My point being don't think you're better than someone just because you dress more extravagantly than someone else. Looks are great, but they sure as hell aren't everything. Thanks for sharing your mind with us, Mrs Benedict, it's much appreciated.
Man i agree with this so much! people are so bloody concerned! haha i have been watching BlackFriday for years and anyone who has watched more then a few of her vids should know, she would hate to see what those ppl said in the comments she always talks about this kinda crap its stupid! haha Love your vids :)
Your original “sub genre” video helped me understand and be okay with my two very different fashion types. I loooooove going Edwardian when I have the chance with my super ornate tie and collar pins and burn out leather coats, but shit I love my 80s pikes, my black craft cult to shirts, and my leather jacket I studded myself. I just switch between 80’s/modern twist and Edwardian gothic vampire, and I’m okay with having both styles! I don’t feel like I have to commit to just one aesthetic, ‘cause I love more than one. You’re a great youtuber and I hope to see more of your vids for a long time 🖤🖤🖤
Honestly, at this very moment, if anyone tells me that I'm NoT a ReAl GoTh" I take it as a compliment. I dare to step out of the box and not wear punk rave everyday. How dare I. I love your videos that cover topics like this one.
I am a pacific islander with my own unique goth style. I love my samoan background that I always try to encorporate some cultural patterns into my gothic style. People always say I'm a faux goth because of this but it doesnt phase me because to me goth is about taking whats within you no matter how hurt, grungy, dirty and icky it may feel and giving it a form, changing its emotion to become something else that empowers me when I wear it. Fuck the haters they make great motivators.
As usual, you are so spot on Angela. I live in a very rural area, in Virginia, where the goth lifestyle is almost non-existent, but the few that here seem to come together and don't discriminate any of the others. I'm fortunate that at 34-years-old I am confident in who I am to be able to encourage others around me and take the "baby-bats" under "wing", so to speak. I would never dream of excluding anyone because of lack of funds for name-brand attire or other trivialities. It really is a shame that even in the sub-culture of goth there are those with body-shaming and hate mongering amongst ourselves.
In the late 80's/ early 90's I was bullied A LOT for being a new punk by the "cooler" punks it's like this in the goth, metal, etc... subcultures as well. There will always be a few assholes in the scene, lucklily in my case I also found others like me and stuck with them.
These kinds of points are part of why I started watching you in the first place. I myself go mostly natural with my make-up. I just feel more comfortable with just eyeliner and sometimes lipstick/ lip liner.
I swear you, Gothic Soul Flower and Cemetery Confessions are the only channels I stick to. The fact that we even have to still talk about this subject even with so many sources shoving it in their face is ridiculous. Angela thank you for being the voice of reason, I know it must be quite annoying having to deal with toxic people all the time.
I love your videos, they give me so much perspective. I've loved goth music, literature, fashion, etc since I was 16 but it's taken me til now, 24, to outwardly dress and express myself as such. I'm so much happier now that I am though!
I'd also like to add that being that I have been in the punk\goth scene for 30 years, it's pretty funny seeing new comers being fashion police, in the 80's and 90's the variety of goth styles went from ladies like yourself who look a bit on the Morticia side to Siouxsie clones, to punk/goth rockers etc..., there was NOT just one look there has always been many looks, that is what is fun about it.
I believe that goth is a mindset of seeing beauty in darkness, I think you can be goth even if you don’t own a single black shred of clothing if that’s what you want to be.
Thank you for this video. I have been told that I am not goth because I am Black Hispanic, don't wear enough make up, and etc my entire life. I ignore those comments. Goth has always been and will remain in fiber of my entire being for rest of my life. "Not a phase mom, lol." 😂😂😂🖤🖤🖤🤘🏾🎩🦇
You really hit home with this vid, most people who get into Goth have already been bashed by the basic mean girls and are looking for an escape, so to think oh well these are the people who say be yourself no matter what anyone else says and then to meet one of these people and have them be a complete bitch to you is crazy. Elders are supposed to teach and inspire not bash and bully you and tell you your not welcome to sit with them, it's sad when did this become just another pissing contest. I live in the south I'm pretty much the only Goth around never seen another Goth in real life but I don't think I'm cool af and to good to talk to normal people and when someone asks me about the sub culture I tell them what I've learned so far and go out of my way to make it a point that it doesn't matter what you look like or believe anyone can be apart of the scene and that the only people we aren't cool with is bullies and assholes. So to know that there are goths out there making baby bats feel like they don't belong makes me sick, if you really are so full of yourself that you think just because your look is so out there all the time like you have to put on a front and anyone else who is comfortable being more low key is unworthy of the title Goth then your the one who doesn't belong in this scene.
Thank you for this video. This is something I have been worrying a while about. I don't know how they expect newcomers to magically buy a new closet and whole leap of makeup but if they have a problem with my look they can take their money out their own asses and pay it for me.
Right on sister! You and I are roughly speaking, contemporaries, and the crowd I used to run with at the time spanned the full spectrum; from basic goth to full-on-turbo-goth-god(dess -as the case may be), and NOBODY gave a shit about how the other looked! The strange thing is, and this I only realized later on, without trying to or even caring about this, my friends were looked at as the high-ranking goths of our community. Now this was a title conferred onto them (and me by association) by those who were less confident, but it was never something any of us even thought of, it just wasn't how we thought. One friend of mine was a goth goddess, tall, thin, pale and gorgeous, not mention wickedly smart and funny, and she was the most down-to-earth, kind person you could hope to meet. But, because of her looks, a bunch of people placed her on a pedestal and the same story could be said about a good bunch of that group. It was other's insecurities that did this, not us. They did it to themselves! None of us cared or gave a shit about this nonsense, we just cared if people were fun and nice, but others did and that's how a pecking order was established. I only found out about this because someone once made a comment about how I was part of the high-goths (whatever the fuck that means), and I was like what the hell are you talking about?! That's when I found out about all of this stuff. Imagine all the talking and BS, not to mention anxiety and feelings of inadequacy, that must've gone on behind closed doors... all of that because some people were too afraid to come and say hi. To echo Mondfalter Arts, Black Friday would be the first to tell these clowns to stop being asshats and to be nice! Yet again, the pecking order is established by the insecure... Another great video! I doubt it will change any of the elitists (yes, I said the E-word), but it might help those who are young and new to the scene. Good on ya!
Being goth to me is so much more than just the aesthetic. It's about the love of dark things and the music. Of course the fashion matters but some people don't have a lot of money so it's difficult. Also I like to incorporate pink eyeshadow into my looks sometimes. I feel like light colours can still be goth af
I don't want to comment on each and every video, especially like 3 years after you've uploaded something, but it just feels like this perspective has fallen to the wayside so it's refreshing to hear. You fit in where you fit in, it doesn't matter what clothes you're wearing, what matters is if you're true to yourself, loyal to your friends and passionate about the music. If you fall out of a scene, it doesn't erase the time that you participated in it...but if you never participated in it, you can't act like you are (or ever were) a part of it. I worked at a record store and my interests in music were broad. It didn't mean that I liked every band I ever heard (far from it), but you can't effectively serve your customers if you're not able to answer their questions. I remember one customer in particular, not much older than I was at the time (2002), probably right out of high school. His skin complexion wasn't great and he wasn't alternative looking. I knew he was probably an introvert because I had seen him in the store several times over the past few months, poking around but never buying anything. He was looking around like he wanted to ask a question, but didn't have the nerve to do it because he was afraid of the reaction he might get. So I walked over and asked if he needed help finding anything, which, being an introvert myself, was something I rarely did (I let customers come to me instead). He looked around the room and in a quiet voice said something along the lines of "I'm looking for like...uh, like, music that you'd listen to if you were in The Matrix. Not like the action scenes, but like, the club scene in the beginning of the movie." The reason I walked up to him is because I had known that was probably the type of question he wanted to ask someone, but he didn't know who to ask. Record stores were trendy places. There was nothing really alternative about the way I dressed for work aside from wearing black jeans and Docs, but all of my female co-workers were really into emo at the time, so they always had on tons of eyeliner and had dyed black hair and they must have looked fairly "goth" to him, because he admitted he had asked some of my coworkers for suggestions before and the best they had done was point him towards Korn and Limp Bizkit. Although my co-workers appeared to look like they could answer his questions, the truth was that they had let him down. He admitted he liked some songs, but that really wasn't what he was looking for, he was looking for a more electronic sound. He liked some electronic music, but most of it was too upbeat or too cheesy-sounding for him. So he asked me, an employee that no one on the planet would have ever described as "goth", based on my looks and attire. I warned him that since we were part of a chain of stores, our selection was primarily geared towards promoting pop music and our selection in this department was really limited, but I'd do the best I could. I walked him from A to Z in the "Rock" category, which is where 90% of the stock went, even stuff that wasn't remotely "rock" but wasn't hip hop, country, jazz or classical. We got to B. "Ok, Bauhaus." He picked it up. "Peter Murphy, that's goth...but it sounds like you're looking more for an industrial sound." He shrugged, he had no idea what the difference was. "Coal Chamber, Kidneythieves, KMFDM, Marilyn Manson, Ministry..." The only one he knew was Manson (because everyone did) and he wasn't really looking for industrial rock stuff. That was going to make it really hard, but I did convince him to get "Pretty Hate Machine", because we only had one copy and he seemed like the kind of kid that needed to hear it. Nitzer Ebb...maybe, but he was on a budget, I wasn't just going to hand him everything. We got to Skinny Puppy and we didn't have any, but we had ohGr's "weLt" sitting there instead. The name Skinny Puppy intrigued him but I thought the ohGr album was probably going to be too weird for him to enjoy. We finished up in the tiny "Electronic" section...I went out on a limb and handed him Apoptygma Berzerk's "Welcome to Earth" and Wumpscut's "Wreath of Barbs". It was a gamble because I hadn't personally heard either album yet, but I knew of them from friends. I was just apprehensive about having someone spend money on something they might be disappointed by. I wanted him to get to where it was he wanted to go. Two weeks later this kid came back with the biggest fucking smile on his face and comes up to the front register. He doesn't look any different aside from the fact that this time he's dressed in a black t-shirt and pants. He's carrying about half the albums I'd pointed out to him earlier and he says "Hey, thank you SO much for those recommendations! Out of this whole store, you found exactly what I was looking for and I didn't even KNOW what I was looking for! Thanks for not blowing me off because I didn't look goth enough or anything." I had to laugh because I thought that was so funny and so fucked up at the same time. I was in the same situation as him, I always got dirty looks at clubs for looking too much like a normie, I just never gave a shit because I didn't feel I had to prove myself to anyone. The promoters liked me because they were always super surprised that this random kid owned some Wax Trax! record they'd been trying to hunt down for years. So I just told him "I don't look goth enough either, but I go to goth clubs sometimes. The only thing that matters is that you like the music. It's hard enough just trying to find it." At the time, that was the truth, it's much easier now (in fact, the store eventually closed not much later because the internet DID make it much easier). He admitted "I just want to learn as much as I can, I just didn't know where to start." I told him that's how it should be. I still feel that way. It didn't seem like an especially meaningful moment at the time, because I was just doing my job, but it was really important for that kid in that moment. I stayed active in music for a very long time, but never went (directly) back to music retail because the future looked grim after my employer filed for bankruptcy and liquidated all their stores a year later. In retrospect, though, that incident stands out because it wasn't a question about where to find The Eagles or Santana or 50 Cent (or any number of artists that literally any employee in the store could direct the customer to). I think that's why I enjoy your videos, your depth of knowledge and experience is something I can relate to. Everything was so "in the moment" back then, but our experiences are part of a broader history that needs to be shared with younger generations and despite what others might say, you're humble about it.
Angela Benedict: Younare so wise and kind. Your empathy for the Baby Bats really showcases your amazing character and moral compass. I wish I had close goth friends like you. 💋😊🕷
ive been lucky enough to not worry what other goths (or people for that matter) think of my tastes in fashion, decor or music. I like what I like and if that makes me goth so be it. I love being different, I love unique things and my fiance loves me the way I am. Everyone has their own take on what goth is, and if we were all the same, how boring would this world really be. Love your videos Angela, theyve been a really good reminder to me to not stress about the little things in life when Ive had my doubts. 🖤🤘🏻
I have experienced both the ridicule for not being goth enough and being too goth. I have been called both a fake and a snob. I was apart of the goth scene in Texas and even played bass for a bit in a goth band. Still got it from both sides. What is the saying "you can make all the people happy some of the time, but not all of the people happy all the time". I'm new to your channel and already have liked a few posts. You're wise beyond words on the subject and subculture that is goth. Thanks for sharing and educating!
It's such a relief to hear you speak of this because tbh I consider myself goth but don't publicly say it cuz people tell me I couldn't pull off the goth look. I really wanna explore more with fashion and makeup like heavy eyeliner and corsets that I've always adored and wanted to do. You've encouraged me! Cuz I'm a minimalist but wanna incorporate more and express more!
I'm actually in a group discussion about this kind of thing with alot people who want to be goth get attacked because they don't dress out all the way or ones who do dress get attacked aswell saying they aren't goth either. It's is quite poison either way. But, they did say it's all about the music as long as your into the music!
I agree with you 100%! I'm 40 years old, you'd be hard put to find any other colour but black in my wardrobe, but just because I don't do my makeup every day or dress up in corsets tops, fishnets and a multitude of accessories, doesn't stop me being a Goth. I have days where black leggings and a jumper will do and others where it's top hats and tail coats with all the trimmings. Please need to concentrate on being nicer and on their own uniqueness and stop having a go at others. My best friend is 29 and just getting into the Goth scene. She doesn't need negativity from others, she needs to be allowed to find her way naturally and ask for advice when needed. I mean if we were all the same wouldn't life be boring!
I never thought that expression of feelings by outfit in everyday life can be so significant for the people, perhaps it is for the yougers but it's fleeting at the same time. I think there are better ways of interaction and communication between people in our ages.
Angela, thank you for this. Being one who was bullied for how I acted or what I wore or who I hung out with, this really brings it close to home. Society has a set standard for what everyone is supposed to look like and that’s where stereotypes are born. The fact you are opening up and saying fuck the haters and making people who were once in our shoes feel welcome is probably the best feeling in the world. Love the video! 🤟
Those people are also very rude to BlackFriday by making her the standard. She never asked for it, and she never asked anyone to look like her to be considered goth. She seems like a genuinely nice girl who just like to "goth up" everyday to feel like herself. I mean, in the end, we should all just do whatever we want to feel like ourself - from minimalist to over the top, who are those people who seems to care?
This video is so encouraging for me. Thank you. I work a day job and I CAN'T dress the way I would want to. I have a uniform and I have to dress very conservatively, especially with my makeup. I identify myself more as metal-goth but most days I just dress in dark clothing. I don't consider myself goth because I'm not "extreme" goth. And all the comparisons to Freyja (Black Friday) make me sad because I'm positive that she does NOT think that way at all. She's absolutely lovely and I don't get an elite vibe from her AT ALL, which is why I enjoy watching her videos so much. Thank you again for speaking copious amounts of reassuring truth, Angela.
Thanks for being the voice of reason out there Angela, and showing everyone (not just babybats) how imporant it is to be true to yourself. I mean isn't being true to yourself one of the reasons why we are in the gothic subculture to begin with? It takes time, years, to build up a gothic wardrobe, and even when you have one but you can't afford to spend 2 hours+ every single time you want to step out of your door or show your face in public it doesn't make you any less of a goth. Stay strong, be true to yourself and dress up for yourself when you feel like it or like the occasion is there. Whether that is everyday or during special happenings or events is our own choice. There is more to goth than meets the eye :) A lot of people tend to forget that because that's how we tend to stand out in a crowd.
I remember waking up one morning and getting dressed , I then looked in the mirror and I remember this feeling of terror that someone would tell me I didn't 'look goth enough'. Thank you for this video, and your other videos, they've allowed me to have the confidence to have lazy days.
You've gained a dedicated subscriber. I thought its black Friday was my goth role model and I felt fake because I'm just 15 and my parents couldn't afford a goth wardrobe. But ever since I was born I've been drawing grave yards, going ghost hunting, thinking about spooky shit, etc etc. Thanks for helping my find me :))
I hope we can get more live streams in the future. It was always so fun just hanging out with you and the community! I really adore your no bull shit attitude
THANK. YOU. I am a person that has always loved and admired the goth subculture, however I don't have the money or skills to go full out mega goth in fashion. However, that doesn't stop me from wearing full on black as often as I can, even since I was a teen. I've always been afraid that because I don't always look goth or wear extreme makeup I wouldn't be welcome in the community. This makes me happy to hear and much more comfortable with my style.
Goth-wear is expensive. I have a series on my channel where I try to show how to put together different outfits on a budget from thrift stores as well as pop-culture oriented shops. Kinda like a template to help people find things that suit their own personal style. If it feels authentic to you, then you're doing it right. I hate that there are people out there who make others feel as if they don't belong by way of measure. It's silly. I'm happy you're feeling more comfortable in your skin
I absolutely love Black Friday, and those comments using her to put others down piss me off royally. That said, I also L O V E your fashion sense Angela. It’s proof that you can be fabulous and goth as hell without the teased hair and white face makeup. It inspires me a lot. Shame I didnt see this video sooner ; - ;
I love this. I feel like in every alternative subculture there is so much hate for people who aren't extreme. I have never really felt like I had to prove myself because I grew up in the alternative scene but for people just getting into it I feel for them. In my daily life I wear mostly black or black with a pop of color but I don't look extreme. I grew up in an a family with a lot of alternative people who worked as teachers, nurses, paralegals and other office jobs. They would have to dress "normal" during the week but on the weekend would wear their real clothes, go to shows and hang out with their alternative friends. I learned very young that you can't call someone a poser just because they aren't decked out everyday. We have jobs and live in the real world where sometimes it's not "appropriate" to be extreme in your style choices. I like Black Friday but I myself have more of a casual look because I like comfortable clothes.
Great video. I agree with a lot of what you said here. One's style doesn't have to be extreme trad goth or death rock to be goth. There are a lot of different styles out there that fall under 'Goth.' Likewise, people can mix 'n' match their styles to their hearts content. These idiots that believe a person has to be as extreme in their appearance to be Goth are truly in need of a serious education concerning the culture. I also agree that we, as a community, should be calling out those that make those sorts of comments, and propagate this sort of attitude. On a side note, I am glad that you said it is not the fault of the RUclipsr(s) with the extreme looks that this mindset exists.
♥ Dang I needed this. I'm new to the scene and I have no money. College drop out with no job and cheap clothes. I do what I can with what I've got and the internet can be pretty... harsh. Thanks for being a kind, refreshing wind of hope for me. Stay awesome. ♥
I’m glad that you made this video. I’m at the baby bat stage and hearing people saying they are Victorian, Lolita, Cyber, etc. And (not to bring race into it) but it’s harder since I’m black so white pale face obviously wouldn’t look right. And I’m too poor to afford the shoes and such. This calmed me down so much. Thanks so much, Angela. Sorry for being late to the video.
I'm so sorry to hear that-- Goth has no color and anyone who says otherwise has something wrong with their brains. Black goths are stunning. Just a reference: www.pinterest.com/BravoBlackDog/afro-gothic/?lp=true
Wow i really liked and needed this video :3 . I used to love and watch black friday all the time (not to say that people shouldnt enjoy someone they like) but i got this sort of elitist vibe from her and felt ashamed bc I wasnt on 'her level ' then i found you and it wad like a wake up call; to be me and to be expressive however i chose to be. Thanks you (as always) for making a great video and educating not only new comers but others as well. With love ♥♥♥ (also congrats to the winners!!!)
Thank you sooo much for uploading this!! I've been having problems with people who tell me i'm not goth enough because I don't have the "right clothes/looks". I may not have the attire i would love to wear but i'm slowly getting there!! I feel more confident being who I really am! Again thank you!!
Well, it's about the music... It's always about the music. If you want to "goth out" every day do it... I have a job that doesn't allow crazy hair colors and heavy black make up. I have already been talked to about my clothes and my hair. M-Th I'm not "gothing out" in fact I might not even "goth out" unless I have some where to go on the weekend. That doesn't make me any less goth than Black Friday. I don't even envy her being able to be "gothed out" everyday. Some days I don't want to sit in front of a mirror and do my hair and make up for hours. Some days I just want to throw on a black shirt and go. Even when I do "goth out" I try to be simple yet elegant with my clothes 'cuz I live in a hot place. Layers of velvet are nice and all, but not when it's 120 degrees out, f-that.
A wonderful and insightful message Angela, you are a true gem and a class act :) I get the feeling that Black Friday will soon be horrified to learn that people are using her name and image this way which is probably not what she needs atm. While I do not want to put words in her mouth I will risk saying that from what I have seen I get the distinct impression that she would whole heartedly agree with you Angela.
Well hello Jasimine! We meet again. I 'think' I remember her making a point like this and she may have a video like this out there but I don't remember offhand what it might be called or where she commented on the subject if not a whole video dedicated to the subject. It would be a handy link to have for those using her image this though I admit.
I love both Angela and Its Black Friday for different reasons and I love how both of them dress. I go OTT in my own way and I've actually been called a fake Goth because I like to put glitter on my face sometimes. I've been Goth since I was 14 and I'm a lot older than that now and still going. If you are new keep going wear whatever the hell you want and makes you happy, you probably look amazing and gorgeous as well :)
I totally agree Angela, and i belive that the most important aspect of being a goth is that you feel it in your soul more than your appearance, and anyone who thinks that being a goth means just the fashion is sadly very shallow. As a goth for over 20 years i belive that the coolest part of it all is that you grow in your knowledge of the amazing diffrent music styles, history and literature. So much to explore, learn and discover, and that is how you grow in your goth lifestyle.
Great video and yes this is a topic that needs to be addressed more due to how damaging it is to newer goths in the scene. Being an older goth myself usually you saw the extreme goth look for clubs, parties and concerts however you knew everyone didn't dress that extreme everyday because you saw them all the time out of those elements and in everyday mode. With RUclips you can create that illusion that you are to that extreme every day or people will get that notion even if you are not trying to portray that illusion. Over the years I have learned it's not about impressing others it's more about impressing myself. I know who I am I like how I dress and no one can knock me down as being lesser than thou because I am not over the top all day long. However this is years of being a goth and remembering a different time in the goth subculture. This is why we need to bring awareness of being yourself and you don't need to be extreme to be considered a true goth.
“All of this because Black Friday is more gothic than you” sounds like sometimes a middle schooler would say honestly, also as much as I love her channel and sense of style, I’m a full time art student, I have to get messy, I no longer have the time to tease my hair everyday and put on some falsies. Doc martens and ripped sweaters everyday for me. I’m not even close to pale, I don’t feel the need to be either, I 100% agree to saving the gothing out for events or parties.
Thank you for this awesome video! I definitely am defensive of people who are new comers who get told this bullshit they aren't goth enough looking etc. I have friends who are super simplistic and others who are extremely fancy with their dress. I wear whatever I feel like and it depends on my mood for that day. I do also pity people who treat people like they are lesser than. I think they themselves don't feel "goth enough" so they project their insecurities onto others which is sad.
Hi Angela , this is the first time i write on your chanel or on any goth chanel for that matter , i started to get interested in the goth subculture for real not so long ago , i had seen it in the past and thought it looked good , but never dip deeper , i grew up listening mostly to nirvana . I started getting really interested in the subculture thanks to videos from black friday , and in them i could see that the goth subculture was inclusive of both female and males , might seem strange but its so much easyer to find girl pictures in the internet then males , so probably something to do with my confusion + uninformed , anyways from watching her videos i was getting the warped image that , that was the normal look for goth , when it is not , as there is no normal look for anyone , and everyone its diferent . I think that its best to take the good things you can learn from each person , she goes out looking extreme and that teaches me that just do what you like and what makes you happy , as i said the stile looked cool and i was interested , but its easy not to do things because of what might people/family/ relationship say , and with her videos i got strengh to just say Fuck it ! :) I want to thank you , because thanks to your videos i learn of the subculture as it was in the past , i have discovered many groups thanks to your play lists , and slowly finding my sounds , so far sisters of mercy , tipe o negative , tiamat , are my favorites , i just like guitars and drums :) , anyways i was getting kind of confused with the hole argument of are you goth if you dont like the music , and you have to dress in a certain way , and i honestly was thinking that maibe it was not as inclusive as i thought at first , but in your videos you make it clear that goth its flexible , there are plenty of bands out there , plenty of stiles out there to dress , so i guess what im trying to say its that you also teach acceptance because a brand in a shirt/dress/ any other clothing item does not make you more goth then someone else . Through your chanel ive discovered cementery confessions with some great podcasts , the kilted goth coolest grandpa on youtube and a good number of other chanels , so thanks for that to ! , anyways i think i have rambled enough and not sure if i wrote everything i had in my head at the start , but this was mostly a thank you post and i got that across , forgive spellin mistakes please as english its not my native language :)
I'm so glad that you made this video. It's a relief to see someone understand the fashion issue in the Goth culture. I myself am "a notch above minimalist" and I agree with every word you said. Kudos to you for speaking out and continuing to do so. Also, your makeup in this video was gorgeous. 💜
I watch this channel for you. I enjoy an intelligent person who knows what she is talking about. My favorite outfit is a black undershirt, then pants, dress shirt, black boots and a black fedora, decorated, depending on my mood. I remember the original goth scene. Yet no one questioned me then. Now all these babies think they know everything. They don't question me either. My son says I am intimidating. Glad they see it that way. 🤓🌈🦄☕🎄
Do people seriously not realize that being or loving Goth is about loving the music and it's history? Like you said, people can look however they please because of PERSONAL PREFERENCE...thank you, I really enjoy your videos!
I never understood this whole levels of goth thing for clothing and also you have to have a certain skin color to be a certain style that makes no sense at all. I am Latino could be pale if I wanted too but I love vampire and Victorian style goth and I can wear that regardless of my skin color another great video! And congrats to the two winners!
This is the first video I've ever watched of yours and I'm so glad I did! This was so positive and encouraging! I've always felt like "goth" fashion (the more extreme) was so out of my reach because I just don't have the budget for the super fancy clothes, and I don't like wearing dresses at all. But I love wearing black (that's pretty much my entire wardrobe haha) and I love the makeup. Makeup is definitely where I express myself the most and where I align the most with the "goth" aesthetic. I find the makeup so beautiful and I love experimenting with it! I always just considered myself an "emo" I guess, because it was more accessible to me and because I didn't feel like I could ever fit in with goth subculture. But this video was so positive and accepting, and has given me some hope for myself in that aspect.
I love the way you worded your thoughts on gothic looks. You have such a well thought and diplomatic way of speaking. 💜. I agree with you and being a nice “elder goth “, which term I don’t like , btw, I think emphasis has left the music and focused on fashion/makeup much more than it should. Without the music, as you do nicely put it once, those wearing various dark clothing/makeup are just darkly inclined. Hopefully I worded that in a way that offends no one. Much love honey 💜💜💜🦇
it seems to me that when you look at photos of many of the classic goth bands, various band members would be considered below the standard of dress the average goth in the street deems gothic enough. just wear what makes you comfortable and happy and be yourself. have fun. enjoy the music and dancing or what ever it is you goths like to do. ignore the racists and haters.
Exactly. She’s made a video with similar views of this one.
I totally agree with you. She literally says at the end of every video to be nice to each other. I love her so much.
100% concur
onyxfaith
I agree 100%.
Thuringwethil Vaire 🦋💜
She’s so gentle and kind she’d be so mad if she found out people were using her image to put others down 😭❤️🖤
Totally true
The music ALWAYS comes first. Fashion is a part of goth culture, sure... but it's secondary.
It really is that simple.
Exactly
You sound like regina george. Ew.
@@michellelouise4498 nah she sounds like she's speaking facts. Guess it's unbearable for your little wannabe goth ears huh Oh well.
So true
I can't afford the fashion
Funny thing is, that Black Friday herself don't even see it like this. It's a shame that some people use her to tell others they should leave the goth community.
And I (personly) think, it does not matter how you look. And if you don't look goth "enough" how cares? The importand thing is that YOU are happy with it and feel good/pretty!
I love this! It's all down to how YOU feel.
I agree with this.
LigeiaResurrected that makes a lot of sense actually. Thanks!
Denisse Orozco My pleasure! I’ve been doing operatic voice training in private/independent study for almost seven years now, and I have a brilliant and dedicated voice teacher to thank for the singer I am today. And I’m always happy to give some insight on voice training. :)
LigeiaResurrected that is amazing! I wish you the best of luck on your journey (:
I love Black Friday, she is wonderful. The thing is she would NEVER say anything like that because she understands that it's not the crazy looks that make you "true" anything.
Thank you, Angela. Even though I understand this it still helps to hear it from you- a person I respect.
Thank you for helping me take another tiny step to one day finally fully coming out as being goth without the fear of these jerks telling me I'm not goth enough.
Thank you so much 🖤
Same
The power of makeup and unrealistic expectations are placed on the internet blinding people's opinions, some extreme looks simply do not appeal nor are practical to wear on the daily basis, jobs simply don't permit it. But when Goth night comes I do let my creativity flow as extreme or simple as I please!Great video Bella!
Exactly! It all depends on the person. No shame at whomever chooses to be extreme 24/7 but when you're already at the top end...How do you dress up?
Angela Benedict Yeah, how is dressing up a special occasion when you always look like that?
Agreed! On another note if thats you in your profile pic then 1) you're really pretty! And 2) thats a cute cat!
Thank you for making this video!! You are so inspirational and sweet 😭😭😭😭
It would be really cool if your fans could send you pictures of themselves in their normal every day clothing and you could compile it into a video called "What goths really look like". :-)
Hmmmm.....There's an idea!
Sarah Little #whatrealgothswear 🖤
Catherine I looked up the hashtag and did not find anything under it. :-(
Sarah Little I made it up. Lol. I just went with your idea. 👍🏼😆
That would be awesome!
Honestly though I struggled with this because I thought my skin was too dark or I looked way casual.
This is upsetting. When I went to my first goth club in NYC, the diversity was amazing. Black, White, Hispanic, Asian, Muslim-- Every pigment represented and zero fucks given. We were all there to have fun and listen to great music.
Goth isn't about the whiteness of your face -- it's the blackness of your soul!
Thuringwethil Vaire I love that!!!
There’s these t shirts that say I’m so goth I’m black and it’s glorious.
Thilda's Beinhaus agreed.
I want to give you a big hug.
I wish I was born a decade sooner. To have experienced goth before the internet picked it up and replaced it with....whatever the hell you want to call this. Thanks again for being genuine and telling it as it is. That’s why you’re my favorite RUclipsr
Desi Carrion Same
There are elitists in every genre/ subgenre... It was like this before the net.... The net just made it more noticeable....
The only thing that'll keep them blooming is us actually showing up for the events :))
Don't give up!
Nekro Nexxus AGREED!!!!! 👍👍
I agree so much 😭😭🖤🖤
I was accused of not being a “real goth” in a picture where I was rocking a Rozz Williams shirt, big fluffy hair, and pointy winklepickers..
@DeadSuicideFun I think you missed the point of my story.
Skiamakhos Exactly
I like both of them. Black friday is likeable and has great look, and I like to follow her vlog as being a goth.
However I watch Angela more because she is so beautiful, baddass and super educated at the same time!
I was kicked out a goth chatroom yesterday because i said i liked a certain song and the people in the chatroom said the song i liked wasn't goth enough so they blocked me
sanguis M
They are Assholes.
It's so refreshing to find a voice that represents what I've always believed!
its a shame that a lot of people make goth something so vain as how extreme they look, some people can't have deathhawks because they have jobs or some cant dress extreme because they feel unsafe or have been treated horribly
i had a 'friend' who wasn't even a goth constantly told me I was a poser because i didn't dress in full on goth mode
it's not like a power ranger that can transform anytime i want
I have been treated horribly for dressing like myself and I can't even afford to dress the way I want to...
You're videos always make me cry in a good way 😢 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Real Goths accept and include EVERYONE, because we know what it's like not to be included or accepted.
That's really awesome
(Second batch)
Not a great way to start the day... But hey - the fight goes on! Interesting video as usual.
Thank you, love!
I love your videos coalcandy! This was a great video it made me feel more belonging in the goth subculture.
You’re a great youtuber and I hope to see more of your vids for a long time 🖤🖤🖤
I love it when you make videos like this. I hope those who need to hear these words find your video. 🖤🦇💀
Me too. I'd hate to see people put off.
Goth is Goth. It's your life, your clothes, your face. Wear what you want want to wear. Thank you so much for that.
I would love to see what that looks like, you sound awesome!
Samoan Goth???wow,you intrigued me.show how you look,please
You are such a beautiful person. Inside, out
You're very sweet, thank you :)
Thank you to the only Goth channel on RUclips. You capture the heart of what we've been about since the beginning.
Sincerely,
Goths from the '80s
Omg. Your makeup. Is god. Your makeup is life. It's so perfect. I lovvvvve it. I'm getting ideas!!! ♡♡♡
This video right here is the exact reason I love this channel
Yes!! I use to have this wet n wild bright pink eyeshadow in the late 90s that I rocked so hard. You brought back a memory and a half!
Thank you Angela! This needed to be said. Fuck the elitists!
There is more to goth than meets the eye :)
A lot of people tend to forget that because that's how we tend to stand out in a crowd.
Congratulations to the winners
I fuckin love you! I’m so happy you speak out against the elitists and jagholes. You’re my fave! 🖤
I absolutely love Black Friday, and those comments using her to put others down piss me off royally.
That said, I also L O V E your fashion sense Angela. It’s proof that you can be fabulous and goth as hell without the teased hair and white face makeup. It inspires me a lot. Shame I didnt see this video sooner ; - ;
Angela Benedict Thanks. It means a tons :)
A wonderful and insightful message Angela, you are a true gem and a class act :)
I get the feeling that Black Friday will soon be horrified to learn that people are using her name and image this way which is probably not what she needs atm. While I do not want to put words in her mouth I will risk saying that from what I have seen I get the distinct impression that she would whole heartedly agree with you Angela.
Daya Autum I believe she has a video out about this topic and if I remember correctly she has similar views like Angela does.
Well hello Jasimine! We meet again.
I 'think' I remember her making a point like this and she may have a video like this out there but I don't remember offhand what it might be called or where she commented on the subject if not a whole video dedicated to the subject. It would be a handy link to have for those using her image this though I admit.
Daya Autum Hiya lol and same. I just vaguely remember it though.
Thanks sweetheart. You are what we need. Kindness is Regal. Elitism sucks.
Fashion plays an extremely important role within Goth
I adore Black Friday, Angela Benedict and Ree Ree Phillips
I want to thank you , because thanks to your videos i learn of the subculture as it was in the past , i have discovered many groups thanks to your play lists , and slowly finding my sounds , so far sisters of mercy , tipe o negative , tiamat , are my favorites , i just like guitars and drums :) , anyways i was getting kind of confused with the hole argument of are you goth if you dont like the music , and you have to dress in a certain way , and i honestly was thinking that maibe it was not as inclusive as i thought at first , but in your videos you make it clear that goth its flexible , there are plenty of bands out there , plenty of stiles out there to dress , so i guess what im trying to say its that you also teach acceptance because a brand in a shirt/dress/ any other clothing item does not make you more goth then someone else .
