    I liked how you pointed out that back in the day all the "weirdos" hung out together... metal/goth/punk/alternative etc. We all hung together because we were truly the outcasts. We were all open and friends. And yeah, house parties and DENNYs! LOL We met so many friends at Dennys! We would hang out at playgrounds, parks, etc because there was nowhere for us to hang out if there wasn't a club night going on! It was great, so much fun.

      Wow that sounds exactly like what I did in the late 90s. Denny's was a wonderful place to meet people. I am from a small town too. We would hang out at parks and house parties. Interesting to see Denny's mentioned here. For me it was in Idaho Falls, ID.

      YES! I grew up in Mantua, OH... which was about halfway between Cleveland/Akron/Youngstown and near Kent State University. There were some cool underground punk clubs in Kent and a few clubs around the area that would play goth/alternative. So we had some fun options. But most of the time it was honestly hanging out at Denny's or Taco Bell in Kent or a comparable place called Country Manor in Streetsboro. Just so much fun and met so many fun people. Good times!

      Speaking from my point as a doomed, dazed and confused metalhead you're absolutely right. Still going to goth clubs today though. But it ain't the same any more as it used to be back in the days.

    I think it's fun seeing goths dance to non-goth music, because most times I see a lot of "goth" people I know going on about how if you listen to pop then you're awful and you can't be a part of the subculture. If listening to goth and strictly goth is the only way I can truly be goth, then I don't want to be a real goth. I couldn't give up 80s and 70s pop music. It's impossible.

      There's always going to be a few who think they invented air, but mostly all the goths I've ever known, myself included, listen to a wide variety of music.

      Ma'am that just isn't true. It's only a small facet of people who are that obnoxious enough to say that if you listen to pop or non-goth music, you're not a Goth.

      Here in NYC we had Absolution with rotating DJs and you could have one person playing Fields of the Nephilim and then have someone else play "When Doves Cry" and pack the floor. We've always danced to New Wave, Cold Wave and Industrial, EBM and Goth.

    honestly, that party looked so chill, and like people didn't take themselves as seriously and could dress in whatever and still dance and not get glared at/questioning stares at if they're "really goth" or confused at why they didn't put all goth clothes on. Idk I tried my best when I went to see Peter Murphy and I still got stared at - seems like I can never escape that for some reason...don't know if it's because I'm pretty or ugly or what. Lol

    Every time someone tells me goth is dead two new goth nights start up here. I see goths at the mall now even. We may not have the numbers we once had but the passion is still there. As for house parties, since the age of goths does tend to skew a bit older these days, it's really more a practical thing. Most of my goth friends my age have kids, mortgages, etc. They're concerned with getting a sitter so they can go out to the club to escape. Having a house party isn't really practical any more. Babybats could do it of course, but in smaller places goths of all ages really need to stick together to keep the scene going.

    Haha that was just a beautiful video, everyone looked like they were having a great time. it would've been fun to experience that. I k ow you said it feels like some of us youngsters are content with the net love but not really, it would be fun to go to a goth party and meet more likeminded people instead of solely on the internet, we need that human interaction face to face

    I think that there is an inherent difference between the Goths of your day and the goths of today, sometimes, I'd look at it as comparing apples to oranges, but that's my simplified two cents....
    I honestly think that house parties will never, CAN never be the same, because it'll devolve into too many people becoming awkward, going onto their phone as that just kinda brings them more comfort, and eventually just not knowing what to do with themselves.... You'd think that because music is more readily available, a house party like this would be easier to create, but, again, I just don't see the people I know from my generation who wouldn't make it devolve into more of a slumber party type deal, you know, more quiet, kinda, awkward, and definitely not thrilling in the slightest. I'll tell you what, I'mma try this. and I mean it. I'm going to send get a group on FB, and see if I can organize something with all my alternative friends, and I'll let you know how it turns out. And hell, if it's interesting enough, I'll even film it, but again, I just don't know how it'll work.

      Jonathan Robbins I concur. Though, unfortunately I lack any companions of natural gothic inclination, so if I go so far as to begin anything resembling a house party, it will likely be just me alone in a dark room, dancing like a madman to London after midnight dawning monochromatic attire and necro-theatrical makeup. ...Which is a start, of course, but it will likely go nowhere quite swiftly.

    • @nomadfromkarlsruhe8259
      @nomadfromkarlsruhe8259 7 лет назад +9

      XD I mean that's me practically every day anyway, so I can only go uphill from here. (mind you instead of london after midnight, it's gary numan and earlier, more postpunk bauhaus)

      Maybe the elder goths didn't change much, if they don't mind hanging out with people our age?

    • @darkchurchhill
      @darkchurchhill 7 лет назад +18

      I disagree. I live in a college town where their are hundred of house parties every weekend night with people coming in and out. No one is on their phones unless they are looking for their friends or an address. The music being played obviously isn't alternative (trap/house/rap music mostly)since that's what is popular right now, but a lot of people DJ and its pretty much parallels what Angela describes(down to the 40s and sharing of cigs). Occasionally, I'll go to warehouse parties in LA with friends and where the people are dressed alternatively (like killstar nu goth kind of style) and dance and mosh to sad boy/emo trap music (the kind of music that is usually associated with the nu-goth scene). It's not really my type of music or style, but I still have fun. Plus, even in the 90s alternative club music was not confined to just goth, but included ebm, synthpop, etc. Honestly, I don't see why any group of people who really like 80s goth/darkwave music couldn't throw the same kind of events except for the fact that it is hard to find enough people who are still passionate about type of music while still having them relatable to you (for example I'm all down for a goth houseparty with people around my age, but maybe not one where people are either in their 50s or teenage years).

    Things change, evolve with the new generations. Some of the older generations hold a flame for the old days and wish it to never change. Some of us meet in the middle and make great times together. Sometimes we can recreate the past, sometimes we can make something new. Raise our dark glasses to those that hang together outside of the internet and within it. Own it. Merry meet, merry part and merry meet again!

      We had more freedoms and were more active outside. Computers were rare in high school and easier in ways, less bloatware, spying and no virus problems. I had Compuserve in 93 and free Juno email. Now a phone is about all you need except for gaming, photo and movie editing and printers and HDMI on my laptop that is a 13 lb. beast. High end. Best part is shopping online now on phone and saving gas and getting everything in one shot delivered. Closest stores are 6 miles away and they roll up the streets early. Power went out and went hunting for ice and dinner at 9:30 pm. Took awhile to find something open. Maybe hurricane winds came up this far. Over 1 thousand miles away too. Was lugging large branches that fell.

    Wow, that made me very nostalgic for something i was too young to live through. Im not particularly goth, but i do have a love for this and many other alternative niches, and it makes me happy and very fortunate that there are 2 or 3 clubs that cater to the alternative/undergroud scene (if i may call it that way)where i live. I also very frequently find myself rocking out in the local, departed motorcycle bar. Thank you for these beautiful videos.

    I work at a mall, in our local pop-culture shop. We sell a lot of movie tees and stuff. recently we have had a lot of alien vs. predator and vintage horror merch, and you wouldn't believe how this has brought the local Goths out of the woodwork. if you are looking to meet local Goths, look into local events. Not even strictly goth events. craft fairs, EDM events, rocky horror picture show, free movie nights (especially horror movies or cult classics like pulp fiction or the labrynth,) I can't promise that this will open the door to some secret magical underground goth culture of your dreams, but you will meet a few cool people, and these could be amazing places to hand out flyers for your own goth events.

    Angela thanks for your Video. As a NYC Goth myself back in the late 90's to mid 2005, I do feel it was such a special moment in the scene, I saw it changed slowly until it was sanitized and all the wonder taken out. The scene really saved my life, I found deep and meaningful friendships and strong bonds. I feel that being a Goth is more than just a mindset, we are borned or have that inclination already deep inside of us. While looking at your video and sorta looking back, I find myself trying to remember the name of the old guy who used to come in at Batcave and sit at a table and draw, he wore a french styled hat, had a killer mustache and wore Round eyeglasses.

    With the exception of my boyfriend, I have zero alternative friends. I find it pretty hard to find other people to relate to, who share the same taste in music as me, same style, same interests. Hard and I feel awkward sometimes around my friends. Like a weirdo or something.
    I lost my train of thought when I heard take on me playing holy fucking shit

      I think it's even more telling when you can't relate to the alternative people of today because where I live, you'll still see an emo here or there and that's just something I never could get into :/

      @lolliakashiya1948 7 лет назад +4

      People to this very day would classify me as "emo" but I feel like I gravitate more towards punk. I can never find other people like that. And yeah, there are a ton of emos running around and they're kinda taking over and it just makes it even harder to find people I can relate to. All anyone listens to is Sleeping With Sirens, Asking Alexandria, BOTDF 😒. But I'm like where's all the people that listen to Mindless Self Indulgence, The Dropkick Murphy's, Maximum the Hormone, Billy Talent, stuff like that. The only people I know of like that are people in my sister's age range and there's a 10 year difference between us. I can't find people in my age group like this and it sucks baaaaalllllllssssss.

    To me, Goth never died. Sure it's gone through some changes, as any good scene should if it wants to survive. But I've never not had the opportunity to go to Goth gigs and festivals, Goth clubs, shop in Goth stores, play in Goth bands etc. I think a lot of the scene has moved online now (especially the shops) so it might not be quite so obviously out in the world. But it's definitely thriving under the surface of mainstream culture. Sometimes you just need to know where to look.

    Wow, you know, I never really realized how different things are now socially until I saw this. Yeah, in ways, we have things so much easier today, but in other ways, we're fucked.
    I'm heavily involved in the LA scene, and I can tell you, no one throws house parties. At least nothing more than a kickback with like six people in attendance. We don't have that sense of community. You basically are just lurking through people's lives. You see them at clubs, you add them on social media. But you're thinking, did they add me cuz they like me, or was it for numbers? Would I be bothering them if I actually made an advance?
    I feel like I'm one of the few that actually reaches out to people to hang out, because I am always on the hunt for like-minded friend's, but things rarely pan out. They claim they don't have the time, but really, I think it's because they don't want to break that barrier. Being likable is much easier behind a keyboard.
    But I'm definitely inspired to throw a house party when I move soon. I'll pass out fliers after clubs, post online, whatever. Let's see how many people aren't afraid to get personal. 😎

    Personally for me I have social anxiety....the thought of going to clubs or interacting socially makes me uncomfortable so I tend to avoid it now. Which is why most of the time I live vicariously through you lol. I really appreciate your gothic knowledge from the 90s. I grew up going to concerts & mostly hung around the "rocker" groups I guess you could say & even that genre feels like it's dying for me. That's probably my fault though as well. As I grow the people that I used to hang out grow and most of them have grown up to be very different. Memories are always wonderful but still....melancholy.

    Growing up in an area where the nearest goth club was an hour and a half away and impossible for a broke kid to visit. My interaction with fellow goths have been mainly online. During my high school years and on I got used to being "the weird friend" rolling my eyes as the group goes into their 50th rendition of The Thong Song or whatever was on pop radio at the time. In the US, it's cheaper to buy than rent and get nicer. I was in apartments for only a couple of years when 1st moved out. Hated it and no pets. Met my husband and bought a house not much later. Could do what we pleased within reason. Now I have less neighbors and love it. Town is more laid back what is allowed like keeping chickens and lots of woods and lakes and swamps. Should've moved out here years ago. Lots of bonfires are okay, we get plenty of rain. Rarely have to water gardens.

    These videos are such fascinating time capsules. They show a mercurial age that was just on the cusp of social media, a time that sat right on the doorstep of the various social changes that the coming decade would soon herald! I grew up in Port Jefferson during the 2000s, and I don't recall having seen many Goth or alternative types around but, then again, I was very young and hadn't become fully aware of the subculture yet. It's so surreal hearing you talk about the town that I grew up in, (I currently live in CT), and I am really happy that you managed to find more of us fellow goths in there of all places! It's as I always say, Goth isn't dead, it's undead. Immortal. And what is immortal cannot ever die or be killed!🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤

We were absolutely not goth but alternative in all colours of the rainbow but the athmosphere was there! Even more I feel like the person who isnt allowed to go when everyone goes to a party as I watch ;) its almost torture because I really miss this. In the city were I live now I had to build up everything from zero, no friends knowing noone. I still did not meet any gothic people though. I can just hope and wait for the festival season. So I'm pretty sure I've been to this party! Or it's twin sister here in LA. Actually this exact night I had my own house party here for Y2K! I'm really lucky to still have a scene here in LA but no it's never been as good as it was. Not 96' Helter Skelter good but still! In the past few years however it's almost like a club revival (for me at least) and even in my late 30s have made it out 4 nights in a row a few times. Still I see the baby bats showing up at clubs and shows in force and I couldn't be happier🖤 It always surprised me to hear how your experience in the 90s mirror my own from HS to club life to obscure things like getting super dressed and calling it 'goth extraordinaire' I seriously almost shit bats when I heard you say that once. So that was a thing on the opposite side of the states? Holy fuck! It's extremely uniting 🖤 if you ever head west I can show you the night is still alive, dance floors are packed and goth is definitely not dead here! ~loves

    I think that a lot of it has to do with not only growing up with social media, but with things like location, how a person grew up, factors in peoples daily lives, etc. I know personally for me I can only handle a couple hours of major social interaction because it makes me very tired - that's partially to do with being more of an introvert and with having an autoimmune disease. Apparently something like 1 in 3 people from the younger generation has a debilitating illness be it mental or physical. The economy is such that lots of people in the younger generation are having to work two or three jobs to get by, anyone in college is probably still working two jobs, and so people may just be too plain exhausted to make it happen. Then there's a part where (I hate this about my gen) lots of people don't have the backbone to stand criticism or hard conversations without getting offended and having a complete mental breakdown. Those people probably prefer to stay home where they are "safe". I'm not saying these are excuses, I'm just saying these are other life factors that can come into play.
    Personally I loved going to Goth Night at Le Voyeur in downtown Olympia and I can't wait to go to the next one. I danced a lot, there was a fog machine and incense, the place was packed and the guys at the bar were so sweet, there was only one asshole who walked in and said "You guys are why it rains, all the time." And when we gave him silence and death glares he just left. I was like "That's some damn divine power he gave us if we can control the rain!" I hung out with good friends, we went to a diner and got some good food, and that was one of the funnest 4-5 hours I've had in a long time! I don't think it's a problem with the baby bats as a whole, I think it's just a problem of personal factors and logistics on an individual basis.

    Goth has faded but hasn't died out. It's schrodinger's subculture. Or Undead (undead, undead)if you prefer. The last real "alternative" club here shut down a few years back and the scene here, which was more of an industrial scene anyways, has gone from small to barely existing via the occasional themed night at a few bars that just lack the same feeling. House parties are kind of out as well, since most of us live in shitty apartments and have no money. such is life under the liberal party in ontario.

    • @hiroprotagonist525
      @hiroprotagonist525 7 лет назад +5

      What's do the Liberals have to do with it? The scene has been fading for years over many governments. It was always fringe to begin with, it just had a boost in the 90 to the 2000's because that's where the musical current took music as a whole.

    • @MysteriousAsteria
      @MysteriousAsteria 7 лет назад +4

      Didn't you know? All our problems are caused by them evul liberals!! /s
      But yeah, government really has nothing to do with it. Clubs thrive on people's money and money dictates the program and playlists. Also people will only play for the venues and music they like.
      The fact is that in the course of the 90s goth became less popular, because eventually all music styles will have a high peak and then fade and goth's was in the 80s, which is now 40 years back. Other music genres died or faded in much less time or do you still that many soul and blues rock bands in today's charts? And once Grunge, Shoegaze, Brit Pop and House came the music press, labels and club goers were no longer interested into goth or any kind of new wave derived music.
      So there were two things happening in the 90s and 00s: people stopped coming to the parties which caused them to call quits or entire clubs to close. Or people kept coming, but requested the DJs to play other music, hence Dark Techno, Metal and the like started to creep into goth venue playlists. How that has anything to do with government I don't know, in the end that's more of an after-effect of capitalism (demand regulates supply).

    Your comment on sensory overload vs excitement had me rolling because that would actually be me. I never know what to do in situations like that, the word 'party' itself freaks me out because I've never experienced any sort of party that didn't make me want to fling myself into traffic. I wish I was more comfortable in those type of situations, but I guess I'll have to settle for writing books about them

    Our society has changed a lot as well and I think that's where some of the issues are. Throwing a house party nowadays gets the police called and being put on a watch list for potential terrorist activity. (I know not everywhere, but in a lot of places this is very true) Not to mention the creepers that would show up and ruin it. It is much safer to get public venues for parties and actually back in the late 90's and early 2000's people where I live would have punk shows at the local lodge. If you want a place to talk and hang out I suggest coffee shops or very public parks. Like you said music is at our fingertips, so it's also portable and playable anywhere... No need for home sound systems anymore. ;-) Also a good place to find other goth people is at the local game store where they have game nights.

    House parties are very common where I live (a college town). There are literally hundreds every weekend in this less then 2 mile radius of a town. When you bike on the streets on a Friday night literally all you can hear is music and people, while almost crashing into herds of girls who probably pregamed too hard. The music and style of dress is different, but the dumb conversations, cheap alcohol, everyone is a dj, sharing of cigs, best friends for the night, and where am I going to sleep tonight questions are all still for better or worse going strong. Goth and industrial music was more trendy in the 90s and attracted more types of people so you could throw a decently sized house party with mostly only people who of that subculture. I'm sure in 20 years my edm loving raver friends, will look back and wonder what happened to all the large edm music festivals and why people don't do them anymore and tell war stories of when they would dress up and party 3 nights in a row to all their favorite DJs and how they would save up so much money to go. Goth culture might be kinda dead, but youth culture will probably never die as long as cheap malt liqueur still exists.

    I know this video is old, but I stumbled upon it and it took me back to those fantastic house party days the early 00’s...best days of my life! Alts from every corner of the city showed up including many alt artists/Dj’s. I distinctly remember the internet was just picking up speed, so chat rooms for alts popped up here and there and if you knew where to haunt you could find the next big underground party. Those times makes me think of the movie “GO” . Lots of Super Heavy D&B/Jungle/Industrial/Goth and more With HUGE speakers, But genres divided between rooms. In those days...Ravers jokingly called us “Gravers” where I live because we weren’t in Colorful blinking clothing and screaming PLUR, but definitely were amiable and some were even friends between cultures. I knew people who threw House raves, (I live in a college town) Goth Parties in an old abandoned factory/warehouses blasting great music, to an old airplane hanger, which someone bought and lived there, I remember a room devoted to beds, like old rickety hospital beds for people to crash on lol gross but haha...I agree with you Angela, everyone did hangout...it wasn’t an isolated thing culturally like it seems to be online today...and what few Goth clubs are left. Todays gen definitely needs to see this. Thank you for Posting this video, You have a great channel with fantastic content!

    On one side you have the immortal essence of the Gothic culture who is the heart of all poets. For the Pop Goth culture, it will transform into something else. Everything dies (Entropy). The arts (contemporary scene) will be there as long as people can relate to it. At some point the younger generation will mirror their own contemporary social reality. The 21 century will have his own voice.

    I have been around for a while. The scene never really dies. It rides a wave. So, it comes and it goes. But it always returns. On going out, or more importantly not going out due to being broke as all hell or still being young enough that parental influence could prevent going out. That seriously sucked. Especially back in HighSchool.. After spending the week in heavy duty social isolation it was getting out on Friday and or Saturday night that made me feel like an acceptable human again for a bit. Missing it was a kind of torture.. Then there were the parties, back in the late 80s and through the 90's I was a thrower of parties. I was really into the basics.. Yule, My birthday and Spring Equinox. Back when I didnt expect to reach anyone with the internet, there was both the phone tree and actually inviting people while out the weekends before the date. Word would spread like wildfire and I could usually expect to have 50 or 60 people show up. I usually used it to show off some kind of cooking. Generally something that was easy to manage in a big pot or two. Things got a hell of a lot easier when the internet became a thing. As that really boosted my reach. I could then have people show up from a long ways away and better yet, I suddenly had a reason to run down to Chicago for the weekend.

There is also a cosy quiet area around the bar with comfy chairs and benches that people congregate and chat amongst themselves. If you hear something you like then you move to the back of the club where the dance floor is

      Have you tried to show them? When I was in high school I did have friends who were goths as well BUT - Part of our peer group were people who weren't. They were either ravers, listened to rap, skaters that liked rap and hardcore music but we all got along. We showed them our music and took them to clubs and they loved it. Although they would never consider themselves goths they were friends of goths, appreciated the music and subculture and happily did things within it with us. Perhaps show your non-goth friends things about the scene?

    I'm not sure if I'm still a baby bat, honestly, I've been goth for 4 years now, and my ultimate goal in a sense is to be kind of like a Trad Goth, and you saying, "What if we exposed a baby bat to a weekend full of 80s goth" honestly sounds so amazing. The music and the fashion looked so beautiful, I would be completely overcome with excitement. But a goth house party sounds amazing as well, unfortunately, living on the west side of the U.S, we don't have basements. But, I have a small group of goth friends and a house party would be a better way to fully engage ourselves into the way the goth scene used to be for you. As you've said, things are much so much different now than when you were a goth in the 90s and 2000s. This generation of goth have really missed out on the goth scene of the 90s and when technology wasn't such a necessity, it really makes me wish that I could have been a teenager during the 90s and to be able to go to goth clubs and to the concerts. The only goth concert I've ever been too, or the only one that could be considered goth, was when I saw The Cure a few years ago with my mom, she's a die hard fan of theirs. I'm just so glad that you make all these videos and that you share your stories with us, it's really an amazing way of showing us baby bats how goths were looked at and how they acted with each other.

    I live in the Bible Belt, so there weren't many goth kids in my area. There were maybe 4 of us in town. There were NO clubs, so one of our older DJ friends got the local skating rink owner to allow us to throw monthly straight-edge raves. So, he played the music we wanted, remixing most of it, then we just danced and hung out. Never more than 15 people, but it was totally worth it.
    It felt like goth died for me when that skating rink shut down. We had nowhere to go. So many of those kids phased out of the subculture, and the rest became emo and scene kids.

Weirdos where rare, and there were only scene kids and metalheads. I "chose" metalheads. Still most of my friends are metalheads, but I am happy to have finally found other weirdos even if they are not exactly like me. I wanted to be part of the Goth scene in high school but I knew it wasn't going to happen. I started exploring Gothic culture in my mid twenties. I love this thing, because it's part of the eighties, which I love. Not everyone can start a love for the Dark and Macabre when they want to. Goth can't be dead as long as there are people to keep it alive. It's people who keep a subculture alive. And as long as people are alive they can teach that culture to the next generation. Goth has a stronger online presence these days, and in some ways that's a good thing. Goths all over the world can connect with each other and share their love for the subculture and their experiences.

    I live in a fairly small town where I'm pretty sure that I'm the only goth, or at least one that also dresses the part. I was introduced to goth by a woman I met online. Not in the next town over or something easy like that, but across the country. And when you live on the west coast of Canada, that's a lot of ground to cover. Before meeting her I didn't realize that my dark personality, wonderfully morbid jokes, and fascination for the macabre had a name. So I definitely have the internet to thank for some of my gothy things. I mean without my introduction to goth, I would never have searched goth on RUclips and you'd be down one subscriber (gasp!!!😱😱) That being said, I would like nothing more than to see more goth in my area. You can't experience everything just through a computer screen! Clubs aren't exactly easy to access when the nearest ones are hours away. And underage. I recently visited my high school because friends of mine who weren't graduated yet were part of a Shakespeare performance and we were theatre nerds together. One of the girls I didn't know complimented my aesthetic and then told me she wished she could be goth before running off. Had I been more prepared I would have asked why couldn't she. But it came from left field and I had no clue what to say. This gives me a bit of confidence that although goth has certainly faded, it isn't extinguished, at least as long as I'm alive. Sorry for the rambling. Love the videos and always look forward to them.
