@@nsgames24 They won't. You'll get the same device as the RP3, with just a chipset upgrade. I'm getting nervous that they might choose a lukewarm upgrade for it. This looks awesome, but I think I'll still stick with my RG351M for now. The screen is a perfect size here for Retro gaming, but until the chips are better, and run Gamecube, PS2 games etc comfortably, not much point atm, what do you think ? Great and honest review mate.
A 16:10 ratio would be perfect for this device in my opinion... gives more height to everything with an original 4:3 ratio, and on the other hand is still wide enough for GBA and PSP.i
Basically what Ive been saying as well for awhile. Pocketability is my main focus, everything else is secondary. That said , I'd still want an improved RG351MP chip that plays everything below PS2 at x2-x3 , same size but with stacked shoulders and ocean blue. That would be my ideal device. Then a secondary that's 16:10 and runs PS2/GC full , maybe even x2 and 3DS x4. But that one a few years down the line. Everything in-between is temporary so I just get what looks and seems good as well as does well for now maybe also something like playing PS1 x3-x4 on a future miyoo mini like device.
Said similar in a comment just now. Hoping that the Ayn Odin sparks some sort of shift, or sets a new standard, to where Gamecube/PS2 will eventually be properly, consistently emulated at a decent price (150-200 max).
I own the RP2*. There is no reason to upgrade at all unless it can reliably play AAA titles. Ill just be ordering a steam deck when im ready for an upgrade.
Oh this looks great this is what iv been waiting for just something that is affordable but decent.Able to play up to PSP in this price range.Would love to get one one day.up grade my old handheld.Got to love the retro scene right now bring backs tho really good feels👍😁
I hate the button placement (volume and start/select) Aside that it's a nice upgrade to the RP2+ Glad to know that all the issues that Taki told us are gone.(apparently)
Love your videos :D. Retroid are making steps in the right direction, but as a PS Vita owner I'm looking for an upgrade that will really handle Gamecube, PSP and Dreamcast with no issues. Maybe the RP3+ or RP4 will be the one.
@@MasterCosgrove Not many people are talking about the Switch in terms of handheld emulation. Are you saying it can run Dreamcast, PSP and Gamecube to a high standard?
Thank you for putting out another great review Brandon! Super keen to pick up RP3 based on your positive feedback. On a seperate note, is there any relatively affordable handheld that emulates MAME well? Would love to play the MK arcade series on a handheld with high fidelity🙂
Same with Gamecube, I just saw a video of Timesplitters 2 running well on it. Seems reviewers are picking popular titles, often hardest to run, trying them, and then assuming they can't run any of the games catalog well. Which is a shame, because they're underselling what this handheld can really do.
Mine has finally arrived . If there is one thing i dislike (well two) is the god forsaken placement of the start select and how light it is. The RG353P in comparison looks like a tank I can take anywhere where this one seem super fragile . I like actually like the bulk of the 353P. In terms of performance the RP3 is the clear winner and with links like Xbox game pass you can stream games on this. Annoying that stadia isn’t available in this App Store.
try dante's inferno on the psp... that thing is ABSURDLY HARD to emulate. if it can run that, then that is an accomplishment that should go in the history books!
I have the 2+ and had to get the 3 because I can't see the games well on the tiny screen. And I don't have poor vision I could imagine someone who needs glasses.
I was worried after watching some reviews that I made a mistake pre-ordering the rp 3 but after getting it and playing a few games the upgrades are worth it to me. My rp3 will replace my rp 2+. It's much more comfortable and the new screen makes a huge difference.
I also was fine with tur clicky dome switches, but was forced to crack it open because my right stick was non-functional on arrival. Thankfully they sent those extra pieces -- I had to replace the right side PCB, which meant swapping the buttons to the conductive rubber. And it was lopsided to only do the right, so I also did the left side.
It's *so close* to what I'd want from my perfect handheld, but the slightly older chipset, awful start/select button placements and lack of Linux support (At least currently) make it juuust out of range.
I'm always torn when it comes to buying one of these devices. For performance, I mostly only want to be able to play 8 & 16-bit games and maybe a few N64 games, but I also want a big enough screen. While this screen size falls into the "good enough" category for me, I would prefer the size of the Odin, but I also don't want to wait a super long time to get it.
I'd get the pocket 2 + instead, better screen aspect ratio for those systems. I play on my zfold 4 (will have videos coming out displaying that on my new channel The Tech Sage) and frankly having a near 4:3 aspect ratio for retro gaming just makes it SOOOOO much better. 16x9 and anything near it is really a massive compromise.
@@cheeeeezewizzz From what I've seen, the screens are about the same size vertically, so I sort of consider the 16x9 screen a plus when it comes to GBA games.
I still don't know what to buy. I want something with a crisp screen that can play up to N64 (Game Cube would be a plus). What's my best option? Should I wait?
Reviewers repeating one another without taking in consideration shipping costs... And the funnier part is when they use the word "under" before the inaccurate price... And then there is the term "affordable", for me affordable is $100 or less, maybe $120 tops, but when we are talking close to $150 or even more, it's not really so "affordable" anymore...
I'm just overwhelmed with the options. I'd love to play Harvest Moon Back to Nature, Harry Potter, Spyro, and Little Big Adventure. But I don't know which handheld would be the best for PS1 games.
If I didn't own a Steam Deck, I might just grab this.... Steam Deck is awesome but, it's huge. Not always so portable like I can drop in a pocket.... this device could...but, I would need MORE power....
I have a steam deck too. This device and steam deck are in different categories lol. I ordered this one for GO TO gaming unit, miyoo mini for WAITING LINE unit.
I see people complaining about the button layout and don't understand why... it took me all of a few seconds to get used to the Start/Select on top, etc. I prefer them out of the way now.
The form factor is awesome. If I didn't already have the Anbernic RG351MP and the Steam Deck I would be all over this. I'll wait for a handheld of similar size but with better power to play ps2 and gamecube games. Id be willing to pay $150 for such a device.
I'm curious as to what people consider "worth trying" when it comes to GameCube/Wii. On my RP2+ I've played through Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World, Evolution Worlds, Baten Kaitos Origins, Mega Man: Command Mission, Windwaker, Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3, and Yu-Gi-Oh Falsebound Kingdom on Dolphin, and they were all full speed (occasional lag on BKO for less than a second in some battles). The only game that is disappointing is the original Tales of Symphonia (seriously, if anyone has settings that will make battles bearable like the compatibility spreadsheet claims, let me know).
Not it for me I have the retroid pocket 2 and to buy a new device that can run psp and dream cast better isn't worth it but then again I also have switch, rg351v, and a hacked vita I think I'm good.
So what's the 3/DS emulation like? That's the biggest thing for me now that Dreamcast runs well. I assume 3/DS games can run fine, but I wonder how the split screen nature of them works.
As far as I know (I don't own the device, but hopefully will sometime) DS runs very well on it, but it struggles quite a lot with 3DS and only runs few games properly. It uses DraStic for DS emulation, you have some hotkeys to switch screens or display both screens at once side by side. The device uses citra for 3DS emu, probably works in a similar way on that emulator.
I really want this, but until it can do Gamecube comfortably, I don't see the point (other than bigger screen) for upgrading from my RP2. Hopefully there's a RP3+ in our future.
@@abesimpson5503 Are you joking? Half the handhelds now available can do it and even this one can do a few of the low-end games. Should be 2 years tops ... and really it's just a matter of cheaper chip prices. You're average cell phone has the power to do it already.
Too bad i didnt know this came out or i would have waited for this one, the 2 plus is a very good enulation system, but it sucked for streaming since the letters are too small
I wouldn't buy one just due to the way they have handled it. Lots of issues buy the sounds of it and they have already moved onto the next project according to other RUclipsrs in the know about these devices
With RP3 being on hold for this long and then having it for awhile made, I'm curious if they are rather far in production for a RP3+ or RP4, or if that's what the "extra parts in the box" are basically
Hmmm, who knows. I would actually like them to build a new handheld that competes with the Miyoo Mini. They would then dominate the affordable market completely, leaving ANBERNIC and Powkiddy to do their thing with "premium" handhelds.
@@RetroDodo would be interesting to see what they focus with it. Maybe a horizontal miyoo , still about as small and maybe plays all PS1 flawlessly maybe even some at x2? Could be too wishful thinking since they seem to be focusing on raw performance for price. Would love to see anbernic with a 351M(ocean blue color from MP) improved version with RP3 performance and stacked shoulder buttons as their "premium". contender for rp3. I'd buy that up.
Question: How is the Saturn emulation on it? Assuming that if it can do Dreamcast well it could do Saturn, but I know the Saturn continues to be a tricky bastard for some emulators.
I've been looking into retro handhelds for 2 days now. Can't decide what to get. I'm more drawn toward Gameboy/gba titles but I'd also like to revisit some ps1 and N64 titles. This one looks awesome but reminds me too much of a steamdeck/switch. I want more of a retro feel with enough performance to run up to ps1/N64.... Anyone got suggestions?

Great vid, keep 'em comin'
Love the product but think I'll skip this for one that can smoothly run GC.
I hate the button placement (volume and start/select)
Aside that it's a nice upgrade to the RP2+
Glad to know that all the issues that Taki told us are gone.(apparently)
Was that confirmed?
I have a rp2+ so waiting for a cheapish, readily available handheld for GC +
Same
I really hope they improve upon it, keeping the size the way it is but having it be more powerful to play any retro games.
They also could've put the Start / Select buttons, as well as the volume buttons in a much better spot
@@nsgames24 agreed, don't thing it would take to much off the design if they had the start/selected on the front in one spot
Love your videos :D. Retroid are making steps in the right direction, but as a PS Vita owner I'm looking for an upgrade that will really handle Gamecube, PSP and Dreamcast with no issues. Maybe the RP3+ or RP4 will be the one.
Then consider getting a switch.
@@MasterCosgrove Not many people are talking about the Switch in terms of handheld emulation. Are you saying it can run Dreamcast, PSP and Gamecube to a high standard?
@@AllThrows I'm not sure actually. I'm not too familar with the homebrew scene of the switch.
@@MasterCosgrove What was the reason you thought it would be a good option?
Thank you for putting out another great review Brandon! Super keen to pick up RP3 based on your positive feedback. On a seperate note, is there any relatively affordable handheld that emulates MAME well? Would love to play the MK arcade series on a handheld with high fidelity🙂
Ps2 emulation is decent on this as well, just may need to tweak more settings to get a stable framerate but games are definitely playable
Same with Gamecube, I just saw a video of Timesplitters 2 running well on it. Seems reviewers are picking popular titles, often hardest to run, trying them, and then assuming they can't run any of the games catalog well. Which is a shame, because they're underselling what this handheld can really do.
Makes videos about how the industry needs to do better, proceeds to be the only RUclipsr to not mention Takis video or at the very least the QA issues
3 weeks later, how are you feeling about the upgrade? I'm tempted to do the same but haven't quite justified it enough to pull the trigger on it yet.
I was worried after watching some reviews that I made a mistake pre-ordering the rp 3 but after getting it and playing a few games the upgrades are worth it to me. My rp3 will replace my rp 2+. It's much more comfortable and the new screen makes a huge difference.
Ordered Brandon! Huge freaking thanks lad!!!
I love clicky buttons/D-pads!
Any news on Linux dists lowering the (typical high Android) latency?
It's *so close* to what I'd want from my perfect handheld, but the slightly older chipset, awful start/select button placements and lack of Linux support (At least currently) make it juuust out of range.
Fair!
I think the Odin lite is king right now for budget and performance
Just a really looooooooooonngggg wait.
@@BlingoTTM yeah big faxxx 🤣
Exactly. Same goes for PSP, which the RP3 can handle quite well.
I still don't know what to buy. I want something with a crisp screen that can play up to N64 (Game Cube would be a plus). What's my best option? Should I wait?
Wait. These devices work just fine for 8-16 bit consoles. N64 is very very hit and miss, with mostly misses.
@@BakiX Yeah, I'm just wondering which is the best to buy.
I might get this for Christmas if I'm unable to get a PS5, Sega Genesis Mini 2, or either don't feel like getting a Neo Geo Arcade Stick Pro
Same!
Yep I'd rather use my index finger at the top than my thumbs in the middle
This is like the perfect budget device, mind u if not the perfect in design and comfortability.
I like the design, looks like a switch lite and it makes me want a switch lite in those Gameboy colors.
Great review. Going to keep an eye on this one.
Hi Retro Dodo, are there any device to sync up for 2 players?
Did anyone bought the 3+? I‘m thinking about buying it. Or the ambernic one which got a Video on this Channel.
Wait for the retroid pocket 3+ with a new processor (speculation only)
Probably in 6 months lol
The form factor is awesome. If I didn't already have the Anbernic RG351MP and the Steam Deck I would be all over this. I'll wait for a handheld of similar size but with better power to play ps2 and gamecube games. Id be willing to pay $150 for such a device.
After watching Taki Udon's video... should I still go for this?
What about PSone games ?
Yup, PS1 emulation is superb!
The only 2 to consider in 2022 really: Odin Base / Pro / Air & Steam Deck.
What about Sega Saturn games on this console?
using yaba sanshiro they run pretty well too
They run really well too!
So what's the best handheld when budget is not a concern?
Could the “clicky”buttons be replaced by the rubber ones
Is the right stick in your way to push the B button comfortably? It is something that bothers me a lot in some handhelds
my gamesir x2 & android phone is like a "pro version" of the rp3 so im gonna wait for the rp4
The placement of the left thumb stick is disappointing. I like the layout of its predissors
Back in my day we had to use Dingoo's. 😤
Gamecube lol, maybe in 10 years
@@abesimpson5503 Are you joking? Half the handhelds now available can do it and even this one can do a few of the low-end games. Should be 2 years tops ... and really it's just a matter of cheaper chip prices. You're average cell phone has the power to do it already.
@@abesimpson5503 the odin lite condo GameCube pretty easily
RP3 or RG353p? Wich one I must take? For PS2 emulation better go for Odin lite?
Too bad i didnt know this came out or i would have waited for this one, the 2 plus is a very good enulation system, but it sucked for streaming since the letters are too small
I’m looking for a handheld (don’t have one yet) for £150 or less, is this the one you’d recommend? Cheers
But the real question I would say is the pocket 3 or rg353v?
@@RetroDodo I'd love to see them make a clamshell device.
TAKI was the one that spread and started those rumors I could tell he was full of it
Second love your videos man
Question: How is the Saturn emulation on it? Assuming that if it can do Dreamcast well it could do Saturn, but I know the Saturn continues to be a tricky bastard for some emulators.
I've been looking into retro handhelds for 2 days now. Can't decide what to get. I'm more drawn toward Gameboy/gba titles but I'd also like to revisit some ps1 and N64 titles. This one looks awesome but reminds me too much of a steamdeck/switch. I want more of a retro feel with enough performance to run up to ps1/N64.... Anyone got suggestions?
Maybe look at the RG353V?
Can we not pull roms directly from the cloud instead of having to load them onto an sd?
Via the handheld? Yes, but takes a lot of time via the touchscreen.
@@RetroDodo got it, thank you
This is a sincere review, not a biased review like certain channels!
Like which channels?
You should check your mic levels, you have some peaking distortion going on in this video.
