I started playing smite ~2 years ago and tried out most of these other mobas over the last year, which is why I wanted to make this kinda video simplifying the genre down for people. If you or anyone you know suffers from moba enjoyment, reach out to them, offer emotional support.

LoL has long since stopped being the game millions have loved in the past. It's now just about making every new champion mechanically broken and as safe from a marketability standpoint as possible, all to maximise their sales and the sales of their skins by trying to appeal to as wide of a consumer base as possible, resulting in a bland and soulless experience. We need a new MOBA that brings back the LoL of 2012-2015.
To be honest, League is just too similar and simultaneously simpler than DOTA 2 for me to ever go back. SMITE is simpler, too, but has that unique constant 3rd person action to back it up. Riot should consider some innovation.
I've never liked MOBA's, but it's good to know that MOBA fans don't either.
Same
Yeah, I used to like League, but my PC slowly ended up being unable to run it. It's definitely not fun playing with people just as bad as you are who are in a seathing rage for half an hour because you didn't gank when they were at 5% health.
Basically, it's a slow experience, and it just ends up being a waste of time unless you're on discord with friends. But then, why not play a different game?
@@AxxLAfriku My name's actually Jude, but I'm open to the idea.
You're spot on
Dota 2 took me like a hundred hour of banging my head agaisnt a wall to just click and suddenly I'm at 2k+ hours and just decent at the game, it's really horrendous to learn but once you're there it feels like there's so much to experiment and do compared to most games
I played League for 3 weeks. Two days went to studying the game so I knew what I was getting into. I picked a couple characters and started the grind for levels and actually playing the game. When people warned me about how toxic and unwelcoming the community was were no exaggerating. After non stop harassment in just the casual modes I uninstalled. Best decision I ever made.
@@sukivlied just.. no
@Zold least biased G*mer
@Zold have u ever even played a moba
there is legitimately no reason to start playing mobas unless you have 4 friends who will play with you every game. even if you know what you're doing, league of legends isn't fun and there's an 80% chance that your win or loss will be determined by who you're matched with or who's on the enemy team. you're throwing at the very least 15 minutes into a garbage can over and over.
You are lying. Noobs get placed into noob queue when they start the game. Having a toxic experience in low levels is because you made a smurf and got placed into smurf queue with other toxic people. There's no way a genuinely new player knows any terminology or what troll and off-meta picks are.
Heroes of the Storm featured for A FULL SECOND on this video!!! It's coming back I tells ya, the game isn't dead I tells ya!
ARAM tho
I really enjoyed Battlerite since it basically just felt like fast-paced MOBA teamfights, but after their lazy marketing campaigns failed, they gave up on the original game and pivoted to making a battle royale :(
and the battle royale got dead too AND i've bought both of them in EA, it's so heartbreaking, it was my favorite moba
now I must slave to lol
Battlerite was like a tag-team fighting game, yeah it got skillshots and that like a moba but most of the core essentials were a lot like street fighter or marvel vs capcom, if the campaign was more focused on that spectrum, with more arena fighter rather than ''we appeal to whatever the new trend is that will be killed by fournights'' i think it would've survive, i played recently out of nostalgia and it still slaps, but playing with the same 5 people wasn't so fun
Battlerite was the shit man...
I hope fangs will take its place, game looks cool but very unfinished
If you look at their content schedule and their concurrent player counts even when they were full on adding lots of content the game was dying extremely fast. No type of updates to the game made people stick around. It was pretty much doomed to die at some point. Battle royal didn't kill it, they only made that as a last ditch effort to try to hold a playerbase. It's annoying when that's brought up as the reason for it dying. It's like people can't comprehend the game itself was going to die anyways. It's like a scapegoat.
I miss battlerite..

As someone who loves mastering skills more than skill shots, I naturally gravitated to Dota 2. I still can't believe there aren't more games that allow multiple unit control across the map like RTS games, I enjoy how difficult it is and eventually being able to be physically present at multiple places and have control over the entire map. It's real tiring but real satisfying too.

Smite has now luckily improved a bit on the items, removing the old starting items and impleting and entire new more interesting set, and removing boots entirely from the game, so you dont HAVE to buy something just to gain movement speed. But yes, the old gods need a rework, you can clearly feel the difference mechanically between old and new.
boots gang >:(
It's still mindnumbingly boring to me. It's actually even more toxic than league. How tf can I be lvl 10 and see people flame each other like hardstuck silvers every other game? Not to mention no matter which mode I play, I'm over it five minutes into starting. The skins and chests are overpriced and gambly af. There's literally no production costs outside of paying someone to make the models, and they're pricing them as if the economy isn't what it is currently. Worst of all, I'm sick of going against the same gods every damn game. I've played for 13 levels and I already feel like I've had more than enough of it for one lifetime.
@@toxihex876 That's a very good question. I've played both League and Smite for thousands of hours, and personally League is way more toxic. Sure every game has some form of toxicity, but since most of the communication is through VGS in Smite, I rarely see people type anything at all. The skin thing is fair I guess, I've never really minded the price since I've always thought the skin design in Smite was S tier compared to a lot of other games so you get what you pay for, and you get a lot of free skins any way, so I've haven't thought about it. Last thing is you are a low level, so people don't have all the gods is my only answer really. I bought the god pack when the game was in closed beta and is to this day the most value I've gotten from 25 euro.

@@stephenlee1664 I think I prefer the loot loop of Warframe for a very simple reason. In Destiny you're always chasing the illusive god roll or a certain exotic. In Warframe if you go hunt for A you'll find materials and blueprints for B, C through Z. This opens a venue of revaluating my goal build based on my new findings. This adds a layer of versatility I didn't find in Destiny. Even if 1:1 seeking a certain piece in Warframe is longer you're always rechecking your viable build.
At least that was my impression when I gave it a try.
Idk the grind in destiny just doesn’t seem that bad

I would honestly beg to differ.
Smite always felt like a half baked project for the scale it was trying to tackle.
Paragon felt like what Smite was trying to be. If you took Paragon's graphics and sound design and its stance on character kits and applied it to Smite, it'd be such a better game.

Another moba like gameplay was where you had to escort minion bots to be eaten by a robot god
2 lanes no thrall mercenaries save 800 shards to buy fat bot worth more points

Honestly, Paragon was amazing, I'm both suprised and not suprised someone is trying to bring it back. Thanks for the head up. Would be sick to play Gideon some more.
HOTS was very fun. Short 15-22 minute games. If you lose a game no biggy, just do another round. I enjoyed not having to commit 1h for a game.
The time investment is the main reason I stopped playing MOBAs. Now I'm spending 1 1/2 hours on alerts in Planetside 2 because at least I can choose mostly who I play with
yeah i've memed about HOTS but it's actually a pretty snackable moba where you can just jump into fights and upgrade talents on the spot rather than buying items on the respawn timer, there are some pretty fun heroes in it but I personally like the bigger map of other mobas more than hots compacted (but unique) jungle system so I ended up just focusing on the mobas that are more specialized instead
damn if 20 minute games are considere short I'm not gonna get into any moba

@@carsoncity591 "I hate Smite. I play it everyday." There it is, you've perfectly summed up the Smite playerbase.
All I know about MOBAs are they are good at dying, "If your making a MOBA just assume it will die", its kinda like all the dead battle royal games we have had recently. Shame none of the devs thought to go the non-live service model and let the community host servers.
The market got satuated with DOTA2 and LoL, Smite managed to have enough of a twist and good timing to stay around and Hots had Blizzard behind them who were still on top of their throne at that time. Everybody else either didn't have any room or wasn't good enough. Same is true for BR, you need an interesting twist or you won't get passed the big hitters, there is no niche for same as we already had just worse and with less players, please give us you money.
Battleborn got mentioned in the vid but as someone that had played Battleborn, it really wasn't that good. It died because it was fairly inaccessable, had bad shooting mechanics, shitty matchmaking and released at the same time as OW which was much smoother to play and was fun the moment you picked it up. Paragon was a tedious Smite, it came much later than Smite too without adding enough to make it worthwhile. Games die because they deserve to die most of the time.
@@Wolfsschamane Very true; there's also sunk cost for learning the game, a large population requirement, and good balancing is HARD. So you wait until you find another one, but it turns out he’s selling bargain bin dollar store crack, so you impolitely refuse. Then your previous dealer gets out so you get some and love it, then the cycle repeats. It goes from a 3/10 to a 9/10 so frequently that no one can recommend it for sure.
I totally forgot about gigantic, that one really was a gem
Hi-rez's games ARE fun
The problem is the management of the company

Ok
For me, it's the rotation of the original dev team out of Paladins that hurts my soul. I've been playing that game since OB38 (A long time) and at that time the game was majority projectile, high ttk, high mobility, huge skill/prediction ceiling, etc.
Since then, they've doubled the speed of most projectiles, and the new dev team doesn't seem to understand how to make characters that really feel like the original Paladins cast-- And by this I mean that nearly every new character is either a rifler or a rapid fire hitscan of some variety.
Damage wasn't meant to be hitscan originally because dodging and predicting and outplaying was a huge focus and strength of the game. But with everything being rapid fire hitscan, and with the TTK being massively lowered, they'd really destroyed a lot of the identity of the game that made it so good originally.
/rant
I just can't get over the shameful unoriginality of their work. They do literally nothing original. Companies like Ubisoft, Activision and EA get rightly told off for being unoriginal and that criticism is non-existent to Hi-Rez which I find to be even more unoriginal than those three.

I personally think original Paragon is often remembered with rose-tinted glasses. The game was great, but it also had a lot of flaws. Despite bringing a lot of innovation and a fresh look to the genre, it was unnecessarily inaccessible and - in my eyes - not as fun as it had the potential to be. Coming from Smite and having given both Gigantic and Paragon a fair amount of play, Gigantic felt significantly more fluid, polished and accessible while also having more unique characters.
I hope Predecessor will learn from this and especially put a strong focus on the new player experience to build a solid fan base.
I hope that day comes for you. I never got to play Gigantic but have heard great things about it from you, been watching you since season 3 smite. Keep up the great content

@Mokeysniper I'm pretty sure it's actually the kill (or maybe the mid-air direct hit sound/ I don't remember) sound from Tribes Ascend, which Hi-Rez also developed back in the day, or maybe I'm just imagining things. The thing is that, competitive and complex games like mobas, imo need a clean HUD and simple graphics, for example csgo, Lol, overwatch? Valorant, because if apart of thinking about the macro game(here im talking about high elo), you have to focus and watch carefully watch you see because there are many different elements in the graphics that confuse you, you burn ur mind very quick, reaching a unfun point, and maybe casuals and normal players dont care, even could enjoy more the good and outstanding graphics, if there isnt a hardcore comunitty, that support the game, spread the knowledgr to newcomers player, and create a pro community, is very hard to sustain a competetive game.
Something thqt happened for example with HOTS, where there were many casual players, but because blizzard didnt supp competitive, there wasnt a hardcore community, and the game slowed died.

I also played a game with nothing but long-range casters (Beckett, Imani, Voden, Mozu, and Charnogg) into an actually well-balanced 5-man comp. Our Voden DC'd immediately, then Imani wen 0/12 in like 5 minutes and ragequit, leaving me (Beckett), with the Charnogg and Mozu, and we actually manged to win the match. I had my jaw on the floor the entire time, I felt like a god, it was one of the greatest experiences I've ever had in a video game.
And the fact that I was able to remember all of the hero names and the exact comp of that specific match without looking a single thing up after not playing Gigantic for over 5 years should speak to just how much of an impact it had on me. There has seriously never been another game like it.
@@bakuhakudraws5603 You could not be more correct, Gigantic is one of the best games i have ever played, even tho its not around anymore, i do not think i have ever enjoyed a MOBA style game this much, i have over 2,3k hours on LoL and i havent even come close to the level of fun i had while playing Gigantic, maan do i miss my boy Ramsay..
Project Stamina is gone now too. Saddest thing I've read in a while, it died last year after issues with the producer.
@@empicamper I have too many hours on LoL too, and I hate every single bloody second!
Okay hear me out
Titanfall Attrition but it’s a MOBA. Squads of Grunts/Jackals drop in at each end of the map and fight each other - replace cannons with Reapers, Super Minions with Titans. Players initially act as riflemen but steadily purchase the features of a full blow pilot - starting with basic wall running and working towards abilities like grapple. Games would have to be much shorter than normal MOBAs but I think it would be fun to give it a shot at least.
I didnt uninstall Gigantic from my Xbox after like a year of its shutdown. I really missed that game:(
Lets hope it can pull a revival:)
Anyone else remember Dead Island Epidemic?
Me neither.
I'll be the lone champion for Solstice Arena as well
I admit, I played that from launch to closure.
Does anyone remember when you last made a video? 😭
aaaah the characters had sick designs - but took so long to save up for one. I had just unlocked Roy Becker and got to play like 20 games as the fat tourist before the game died.
Mutated Bryce main here. What up?
I also mained Tank and Cheston in Super Monday Night Combat, not that anyone cares
Just wanted to say I physically jumped for joy after seeing a new funke vid
was literally amazed to see him being alive
What I think is missing in MOBAS is to disassociate from certain clunky mechanics and try new things.
Damn Funke it sounds like you are exactly the audience for deadlock. You very excited?
I've never been hit by nostalgia so hard as when I heard the "You Rock, Cancel That."
"Bye!""thats too bad"
I remember when I heard thesse voices in paladins using the default voice over I just kept laughing my ass off becuse of how out of touch the voice was
"Shazbot!"

really well done game, I spent most of my middle school experience on that game.
I swear riot litteraly stole the idea for Kayn from Idris in Vainglory , a dude that can go inside you and going blue or red depending on your choice late game and he was in game a year before Kayn
Rip Vainglory, best Mobile MOBA ever
Man I swear there’s been so many games I’ve played and loved that have all died. Evolve, Battleborn, Block n Load, Awesomenauts, Vain Glory, Bleeding edge, Paragon, Gigantic.
@@TuriGamer hahahaha dude vain was the least like league MOBA in mobile, it seems like you never played it, at the start the main mode was 3v3, nothing like league at all.
Came to see what he said about HotS, and was kind of disappointed. I understand the reason why he doesn't pay the game much mind, but it's a shame.
It's a MOBA very closer to League, but with a heavier focus on team coordination. You get smaller maps and many incentives to group up, on top of all players of each team sharing XP. It also scraps the item shop and runes in favour of talents, whoch are hero-specific choices you make through the match.
It's a shame that Blizzard managed the game so poorly. It went into maintenance mode (aka, no more updates) a little over a year ago, and while the game is far from dead we're no longer getting cool characters and events
Idk man, after playing dota no game has ever felt as competitive and deep as dota 2 with the huge aspect of teamwork and coordination which i have always been a fan of. League Of Legends is also fine with heavier focus on micro instead of dota's macro approach which is fun at short bursts. While HOTS is unique and teamfight focused in a different way, it helped many of my friends into get into mobas due to the constant teamwork and skirmishes in it which a person from other genre always loves(except strategy game fans). All 3 mobas are unique and have their own place in the gaming and esports community, and the other ones like smite and others also have their own beauty. Strategy games has always been my thing since childhood and mobas have been like a boon to the genre in my opinion. And i have beautiful memories with this genre.
Finally, Smite gets mentioned. Love that game, it's fun.
Indeed
Kind of in an awkward state at the moment, though. Balance and mechanics wise. Not bad by any means, just makes it more of a chore to play now than it was two years ago.
@@spectrumaevum7476 tell me

@@nekorisakirisame1323 My complaint (as a dude who mained Sona back when I was learning the game) is that Seraphine is what Sona WOULD be if you updated her to the modern standard of the game. Seraphine stole the rework that Sona rightfully deserves and for that reason alone I think she shouldn't exist - and that's before we even get into all the creepy and fake social media influencer bullshit Riot pulled to promote her K-Pop stuff.

Love it when yt randomly recommends actually good channels like urs
I do agree a lot of Smite characters are quite interchangeable but the newer gods lately are actually pretty unique.
Being a MOBA player is like being in an extremely toxic relationship where both parties still have hope that the relationship can work. Both of you are terrible to each other, but every time you two split up to date other people, you can't help but go back to that awful relationship. Also you drop like a grand on gifts and shit, you know you shouldn't but you do anyway.
I think using hard drugs would be more healthier than playing MOBA games.
I have never, and never will understand this point of view. Why do you play the game if you are not having fun? I have been playing Dota 2 for the last 10 years on and off, having 5 thousand hours in it, and I have always loved the game, if I did not have fun at any point I just took a small break. I legitimately think the game is absolutely fantastic, and is being made better each update. The only thing that can ruin it is other people, but that can just be ignored.
Damn dude thats the most on point description of ANYTHING ive ever seen, cheers
@@hatechm Yeah, that's kinda true. Honestly, the only thing that making LoL even compete with Dota is that Valve just ruined the atmosphere of the game by adding these glowy immortal items and not adding anything to the lore of the world and heroes (though i still think that Dota have the best skins in history of videogames and DK with Mirana are getting 2nd season of anime). Macro games are just better than micro games, but i can't really think of why League is a thing in a world, where Dota exists
As a Dota fan I'm happy it even got mention with more than just a yeah it exists.
yeah, people are too scared of dota. And some people still push the narrative that dota is too toxic when it's actually about as toxic as league is

When you said "Hawken" so many memories flooded back into my head. That was so long ago.
I've played every moba you talked about, Dota 2 is my favourite still, but that probably comes from it being the game I started with. Every other game just feels too easy for me to enjoy now.
"I like this game because I can actually tell what the hell is going on"
This is my go-to explanation as to why I like Smite and I hate DOTA and LoL, thank you.

@@AntUTAU Absolutely concurred. Their one-lane system was unique and magnificent, and they threw it all away to become DOTA Lite...
This, I was looking forward for him to mention VG but I guess this game is just that unheard of
In my place, Vainglory was somewhat popular and I used to play it. Now, everyone plays Mobile Legends.
And now Valve's just dropped the new big MOBA game: Deadlock
No mention of Dawngate. Damn. That was a MOBA that had something cool going on: LORE
Thank you! The lore went DEEP, too. Basko's in particular, where he's talking to his dead son, still fucks me up. There were also longer stories on the forums - Kindra's whole tragic backstory, Zalgus planning to off himself right before getting his spirit, Salous receiving some major emotional damage on one of his usual jobs... don't even get me started on the lore primer.
