6:55 A perfect balance has occurred. You ever play Classic DOOM? I make maps for DOOM constantly and I have a lot of fun doing it. Especially since it is so easy to get into and you may make an entirely new game using the modding tools to the point, that the mod would be unrecognizable as DOOM. Build engine mods have a neat perfect balance as well. The fan made mappack “Death Wish” for Blood (1997) is considered to be as good as the main levels and are surreal in design and outlook. Perfect balance has been achieved just in older games not commonly seen by the general populace. Edit: PS Thanks Funke for another video and may I say that those transitions were astounding. You could make similarities in editing to mapping as both require effort and tricks that the player/viewer doesn’t see or think about. :)
Late reply, but from somebody who's had EXTENSIVE history in modding Doom for the last few years: it's a bad example in the sense that the majority of those tools came FAR after DOOM itself released - GZDoom Builder didn't exactly exist back in the 90s (then again neither did GZDoom itself). And also, as someone who's used GZDoom Builder: eh, your mileage may vary on how easy it is to use. Touhou Doom (my personal big project) was made from a beginner stand point, and, man, I'm not gonna exactly say I found it very easy (though certainly easier to use than any DOOM mapping tool that came before it). EDIT: Also, due to just the nature of how modern programming works, you basically almost certainly can't get anyone to make something similar to ACS/DECORATE/ZScript in a modern engine because of a lot of programming reasons that basically boil down to a lot of pain. The only reason we have them is basically _because_ of the era Doom was made in; something like that would be much harder to make fly nowadays.
i love it when games go as far as to giving full customisability on the older maps/assets i order for the creators to edit or even recreate a map also the transitions are so beautiful
I honestly don't know how fucking brain dead you have to be to buy loot boxes in overwatch. There's like one good skin for each character and you can just buy them all with coins you'll accumulate after a couple seasons of comp.
Overwatch is making almost no money with Lootboxes. The money maker is Overwatch League and that was their focus for the last 1,5 years. Dont shit on Overwatch for being the black sheep in the current game industry. The skins you get are actually really well made and not as crapy as greedy overprice cosmetics in other games. You know, you can sell a hat for 5$ or you can sell skins that took you way way longer to make at the same price. And another thing is that they try hard to balance the game. The smart part of the community that suggests balances changes know that balancing a game like Overwatch is impossible to some extend.
Portal 2 had a great system, where anyone could make relatively complex puzzles in the in-game editor easily, or venture into Hammer to have full control.
I did not read all the comments and, from what I read, I have not seen Trackmania pop out. So I guess I should explain why it's a game which has a fantastic mapping editor. And there's one reason to that, the devs used the exact same tool to build the official solo mode. It might not be the most in-game powerful tool ever but you can create really great maps. You just need to see the number of created maps on that game over the years. The devs even added features that let the players change textures / physics / gamemode / models and more. (Though the tools are not within the game). I might be late to the party but I think it's still worth mentionning it.
3:39 This is why I keep coming back to this video. The amazing little Animation of FUNKE pressing the icon to translation. It so well animated, and just the perfect length!
I know this video is 3 years old but I just wanted to say that in my eyes, the thing that brings video games I play from "a niche thing I can spend a bit of time on" to "something I'm gonna play until I get burned out of it" is if it has a level editor/map tool. There's just something amazing to me about being able to make my own levels for a game I've already enjoyed.
I remember that shit from back in the day. I was good friends with one of the most popular disaster map creators at the time and I tried effortlessly to make something that was just as good or even better than what he made. It didn't work obviously. But I spent hours upon hours trying to get those maps and scripts to work.
@@guitarmaniac004 "I tried effortlessly" means that you didn't need any effort, that it was easy. I think you meant "I tried tirelessly" meaning you put in a lot of effort.
I feel the best representation of giving the tool to player to extend your game was perfectly by bethesda with the creation engine. Skyrim has been out for 8 years now yet the modding scene is so still really active today and even after thousands of hours there is always new things to download or discover
You suggest that more games are introducing these sorts of tools, which feels weird to me because so many games in my childhood *had* mapping tools and that's one of the things that made me fall in love with gaming.

Perfect balance has been achieved just in older games not commonly seen by the general populace.
Edit: PS Thanks Funke for another video and may I say that those transitions were astounding. You could make similarities in editing to mapping as both require effort and tricks that the player/viewer doesn’t see or think about. :)
death wish promises to be fun!
The only reason we have them is basically _because_ of the era Doom was made in; something like that would be much harder to make fly nowadays.
i love it when games go as far as to giving full customisability on the older maps/assets i order for the creators to edit or even recreate a map
also the transitions are so beautiful
No joke, the editing is lit!!!
The bioshock infinite soundtrack made this video 1000x better.
Great vid and content! I’ve never found your channel before you were mentioned by Paden’s Pixels today. Keep up the good work!
This is 2019 overwatch, which cares more about selling lootboxes than balancing the game. Even the bare bones map creator we got was super generous
The smart part of the community that suggests balances changes know that balancing a game like Overwatch is impossible to some extend.
overwatch: look, i have custom maps!
me: oooooh
overwatch: but you can't change or make the maps.
me: .....
It isn't custom maps though? They quite obviously advertised it as custom gamemodes. Nothing about it said custom maps.
@@jaagle ah :(

Portal 2 had a great system, where anyone could make relatively complex puzzles in the in-game editor easily, or venture into Hammer to have full control.
Top notch editing. Really loved the creative transitions.

Smash’s Stage Builder is cursed. Both in a good and bad way.

Wow that's some amazing editing *honk*
Ow, we need the FUNKe
We gotta have that FUNKe
Theres a whole lot of rhythm goin round.
I think you mean level building tools. Mapping has many different meanings in game dev! But I really agree with your points!
Bruh i love your style of editing, its so fluid and quick. Its so good too :o
Little big planet has the most friendly and complex stage builder
Never stop with the awesome transitions
Why is FUNKe such a god at editing
XD take a high school class on video editing and you are better
I highly doubt that, sir. Have you paid any attention to his transition work?
oh my god, funke brought back the hllywood challenges

The amazing little Animation of FUNKE pressing the icon to translation.
It so well animated, and just the perfect length!
I know this video is 3 years old but I just wanted to say that in my eyes, the thing that brings video games I play from "a niche thing I can spend a bit of time on" to "something I'm gonna play until I get burned out of it" is if it has a level editor/map tool. There's just something amazing to me about being able to make my own levels for a game I've already enjoyed.
You never even mentioned Far Cry's map editor.
just met your channel.
GREAT content, editing and script.

Weird you didn't talked about the Trials editor. It's far more versatile than it has any right to be.
THE PAINTED WORLD, THAT'S MY HAT MOD!
Great vid!

Trails Rising’s Map Maker. Literally the most complex but best map editor I’ve seen. Custom maps are insane

@@LynxFTG I tried to use Radiant... but I got bored and started to get 2000 Hours in TF2 instead :(
I remember that shit from back in the day. I was good friends with one of the most popular disaster map creators at the time and I tried effortlessly to make something that was just as good or even better than what he made. It didn't work obviously. But I spent hours upon hours trying to get those maps and scripts to work.

I feel the best representation of giving the tool to player to extend your game was perfectly by bethesda with the creation engine. Skyrim has been out for 8 years now yet the modding scene is so still really active today and even after thousands of hours there is always new things to download or discover
I actually cried when you mentioned the minecraft zelda videos
You forgot Happy wheels a game mainly for making maps
Actually it's called levels but it's just called it maps
Did you mean 'called' rather than 'cold'?

@@Hussain_144 Google translate is doing a good job.
You suggest that more games are introducing these sorts of tools, which feels weird to me because so many games in my childhood *had* mapping tools and that's one of the things that made me fall in love with gaming.
