ME
The true game jam experience is _-the friends we made along the way-_ staying awake until 3 am for the jam results. Never gets old!
same lol, i just made smth by myself..
but am proud of it))
It's 3am for you? Where do you live?
@@_GhostMiner Australia, the "Sleep through everything that happens worldwide" capital lol
@@NoVIcE_Source Solo here too, awesome to hear that you're proud of what you made!
Only 3AM ? I stayed awake till 8 AM, only went to sleep when my mum walked in on me.
Wish I had a lifetime to play all these games. So many wonderful ideas!
I look forward to these vids every year, so much talent on display
Our game "Bready or not" is there! I'm so proud of my team! Good job everyone! Some lovely games were made this year!
I love the art style ❤
Well done, guys!
I like it
pls continue bready or not its so good
mid game
Congratulations! There was a lot of to games compete with.
The game where you play as the monster who scares the streamer was easily my favorite out of all of these lmao! 🤣
Stream Sniping: The Game 😂
@@GrainOfSalt1661Stream Supporting: the Game
@@menaatefadly Indeed lmao
Streamer Screamer is my son's game. This is the third year that he and 2 friends lived in my basement for a weekend to create a game for Game Jam. Did you download and play it? What did you like about it? I am very proud of these kids getting recognized for their creative talents! :)
Brilliant idea, would love to see it built upon. The FNAF game where I got to play as Freddy was incredibly satisfying, too 😈😅
"Pause to play" "One day better" and many other WONDERFUL ideas. Loved it!
Sneaker Doodle is the most creatively wholesome game idea I've ever heard of!
One Day Better melts my heart, what a clever and emotional concept with well polished and fitting aesthetics
I'd genuinely love to play it! It stood out to me the most :O
Same, this is by far my favorite concept. It literally tells the player to keep going, and the big heroic goal is to take a shower and get out of bed. So fucking real ;-;
Very cute game indeed.
It didn't follow the theme tho'
@@El_Andru Maybe not by your definition but:
Normal perspective: you're a depressed human trying to get through life but struggling, but you love your pet and it helps you get through your day
Reversed role: you're a pet trying to make your owner happy so that you both get to live in harmony
I'm told I have "treatment resistant depression" and I also have three cats. I can't wait to play this game.
The one about the cat helping their depressed human hits home SO HARD for me. My cat Maya actually basically saved me from myself, once, when I was in a really dark place. Whoever came up with the idea for that one, bless their heart.
You should get a hobby or stop taking pharmaceuticals.
That last one was amazing! This all was sooo good. I love it.
Man! This community looks really amazing!
thank you for featuring One Day Better, and thank you so much to everyone for your kind comments and for letting us know that it resonated with you! our team is beyond grateful that our little game was able to touch so many people, there are no words. 🥲💕
Absolutely wonderful game. We had essentially the same idea but decided against it for skill reasons - and I'm so happy someone not only did the idea but did it so incredibly well. I'm 100% sure that a lot of people would really enjoy a 30-60 minute game that expands on being a caring and helpful pet that helps a depressed owner through life, and your art style would fit very well, I think. Thanks for making it!
Readying my wallet!
Hey really dig the idea for the game. By chance, your team inspired by the song Plea From a Cat Named Virtute by the band Weakerthans? Made me think of that song immediately upon hearing the premise!
Just hearing the premise of One Day Better brought tears to my eyes, and when I finished it I was crying. I would love to play a long version of it
Also I really liked how colors changed from dark and gloomy bedroom to the bright and cozy living room
@@clcsqueejy04 you're the second person to ask that! It's a total coincidence, none of us have heard that song, haha.
Woah! It's an HONOUR to be in the top 100 again this year. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU to everyone to played and rated Beswitched! And congrats to everyone else in the video :)
Beswitched was my personal favorite of the Jam, its gameplay was fun and the cat sprite is the cutest thing I've ever seen. Thanks so much to your entire team for such a great game!
'One Day Better' almost had me crying. What a touching game that should become a fully released title.
It's the one game from these I'd pick if I were a publisher.
Yeah the polish looks really good too
Heard the concept/idea and immediately started tearing up. Such creative and thoughtful minds making awesome stuff in these game jams.
Damn it, I didn't even finish the video yet.
I started crying as he explained it. Can't believe it lmao, those guys are on to something
I'm still crying after the video
All of the ideas are mindblowing
Wow. Just wow.
Best GMTK so far!!
I am a game developer who missed GMTK this year, but to see so many interesting games made this year brings smile to my face!
Honor to all participants this year, and I hope a lot of this games will continue to grow, because there is a space for it!
My favourites:
Bready or not (goofy)
Sneakerdoodle (cute!)
Bricker breaks free (will def play it!!)
One day better (excelent idea!)
Stramer Screamer (Big brain time)
Yall fueled everyones inspiration to make even more games!
Wish yall good!
Untill next year,
Peace!
Man this was a blast, so glad I held my promise in participating. Hope everyone here enjoyed it as much as I did!
Great job! We did!
For real! I almost didn't participate myself. But I'm really glad I did, despite the fact I cursed myself all the way throughout for putting myself into such pressure 🤣
I was thinking about not doing it and my remote teammate lost interest when the theme was revealed - but I convinced them to still help out a bit and then do my very first jam. I ended #1897 but it was such a great experience and it blew my expectations. I'm so glad I entered. I was surprised to find that for the vast majority of the top 100 teams had very similar ideas to what we were brainstorming, and it was very encouraging that the primary differences between us and them seemed to only be skill, team size and preexisting code.
@@repentandbelieveinJesusChrist2sir, this is a gaming channel
so excited. this was my first game jam; so excited to see what others have come up with!
Same! My first and it was a great experience. Did you do it solo? What was your concept?
This is my first game jam where I have a game at the end))
Had three failed jams in the past.
What game did you create?
Failed Jam for me, couldn't even come up with an idea. Guess im not cut out for this
@@ahmed4363 don't be so hard on yourself, you're doing great, you're trying and that's more than enough, keep going! :)
@@ahmed4363 that's not how it works!
Failure is a stepping stone to succeed. You have done much more than those who considered but didn't join the jam.
Now you clearly know that you need to work on your idea skills. There are plenty of videos, and you could even go through the previous themes for game jams (take ludum dare or weekly game jam) and try developing an idea for every topic for about 15 minutes.
Try different methods - mind mapping or chain of associations.
As I've told in my comment, I've failed three game jams before successfully finishing a game
Chambered Fate and The Contrarian Press were both super fun
One day better is a master piece
I did three backflips when 0:25 showed up! ❤ Thank you so much for hosting the jam, Mark!
Omg those skeles are the CUTEST!!
Pictures, or it didn't happen.
i love your game. please make more
‘One Day Better’ had me immediately sobbing, such an emotional concept
Okay wasn't expecting to start tearing up from a gamejam video but that cat one got me 😭
WOW there are many really good games with cool and funny ideas, i like it!)
one of the devs of 'magnetism rally' here! it was my first time entering a big game jam that wasn't just for some school event so seeing that we managed to get top 100 is so insane!! thank you for playing our game and for your hard in rating these entries ! it was a wonderful experience and i'm so excited for next year : DD
Going from watching GMTK videos not knowing anything about game design to actually being featured, even for a few seconds at 1:15 is making my head spin. So glad to have taken part in the jam this year 🤩
:-D
congrats
Conratulations! Can I ask you how did you start developing games? Unity?
@@glebzaitsev6741 I used to play around with game maker when I was younger but within the last few years I learned C# through RUclips and participated in plenty of game jams to learn game design
Wow, incredibly creative ideas. Great video. Thank you.
I spent 48 hours working on an entry, pulled at least one all nighter to get about 100mb of pixel art sprites and an entire game coded in time, all for all my work to go to waste because the site crashed and I missed the deadline. Best game jam ever, and I’d do all of it again and not change a single thing. I don’t even want to play my game again, let alone finish everything I didn’t get done in the jam and upload an updated version to itch, but I’m proud of it, it’s the only game I’ve ever finished.
See you all next year
Edit: the game is Super Labyrinth for all of y’all who keep on asking, it’s not very good but I’ll finish it some day
did you upload the game? would be cool to try it out
^ If you uploaded it later id also like to try your game
you should finish it
Should've said something I'm sure Mark would've let it in.
@@capsey_it’s called super labyrinth, it’s on itch, it’s awful
Really impressive how creative all these games are, I think my favorite is the Princess reverse Vampire Survivors, I could see that expanded in so many ways.

Coming up on almost 50 game jams and this theme was hands down my favourite, it felt perfectly made for all the game dev youtubers 😂
Game designers have to be the most creative people on the planet jeez
incredibly creative wow.
Immediately this topic made me think of the Reddit post of a game idea where you play as the NPC whose stuff keeps being looted by main characters, so you build up a fortress with supportive industries in order to protect your stuff, and in the process getting more stuff, and then you realize you are becoming the final boss.
I'd play that in a heartbeat
😅
That sounds amazing
The cat helping their depressed owner legit made me cry 😭 it really hits me personally in so many ways
You should make a video about of game releases that started on one of your Jams. One friend came up with this ideia, and it really is great.
I think this Jam in particular has several candidates for future game releases and I hope they find some success.
I played through a bunch of the submissions with one of my friends and it's cool to get some perspective on the trends and such firsthand. Really makes me appreciate the extraordinarily clever ideas and level of polish that goes into some of the cream of the crop picks.
One Day Better made me cry for the first time in months. Not even playing it, just seeing it in this video. What an amazing concept that, from the looks of it, is extremely well executed
Such an amazing experience! I commented on the last one saying one of my goals for this year was to submit a game. Glad to have been able to accomplish that goal. Can't wait for next year!
Congrats! Keep it up!
So many good ideas, damn.
4:56 is pretty clever especially with the "I gotta get outta here!" 😂
Thank you to everyone who played and rated Descriptionary! We had a great time making it.
Super clever concept.
One Day Better is one of the cutest and most heartwarming concepts I've seen in a while. It's magnificent!!!
So cool!!!
that fact this guy is so popular he can single handedly bring down an entire website with a game jam is so fuckin crazy
This was my first game jam and I had a great time participating! I did not place very well (not even top 1000) but I am just glad I finished something and everyone else should be as well. Great job to everyone who got featured!
Ditto. My first game jam, and didn't finish top 1000 either but it was an original functioning game that I'm very proud to have made in 48 hours!
This top comment perfectly describes how i feel now
What was your game called?
@@Graphomite "Screw This Fish in Particular"
13:33 Another reason the game Streamer Screamer is great is because it makes stream sniping fun without having to deal with the consequences of doing it to an actual streamer such as getting reported or kicked from the game/match for stream sniping. 3:28 The audio breaking also happens in Plants vs Zombies 2 when you have too many zombies on screen. This is most often seen in the really high endless stage levels and when you have a lot of zoybean pods spawning helpful tofu zombies.
FYI, your comment can easily be interpreted as if you truly desire to harm people IRL, but only stop yourself from doing so because you'd be judged for it. I hope you also mean that you're not doing it IRL because of the harm that it inflicts on other people.
Streamer Screamer is my son's game. This is the third year that he and 2 friends lived in my basement for a weekend to create a game for Game Jam. Did you download and play it? What did you like about it? I am very proud of these kids getting recognized for their creative talents! :)
@@Muskar2 I don’t do any stream sniping IRL because I find it’s not worth my time just to be on bad terms with the streamer. I of did do any though I would be a friendly stream sniper because I’ve noticed that doesn’t upset the streamers as much because you’re not trying to ruin their game.
@@elenadunn5686 I didn’t personally play it but, from videos I’ve watched about it, including this one, the thing I liked the most about the game is, even though I don’t do it myself because I find it to be a waste of time, it’s all the fun of stream sniping with none of the negative consequences.
I just started game development like 2-3 months ago and i thought about making a game for this Jam. But after i saw all the final games I am pretty sure i will never be on a level near this people like, wtf that games... in just 48 hours. I dont know if there are people behind this that have many years of industry knowledge or whatever but ffrom my perspective, it's impossible for me to be this good in my life.
Huge respect to everyone who put his time and love into this.
MetalClaw!!! Let's Go! My first GameJam and Game! Is the start of a great journey! Thank you very much
The moment I heard the premise for One Day Better I almost sobbed. We need a full release of this ASAP; such a beautiful, wholesome concept, and impeccably visually designed. Hats off to Team SlimeHeart.
Yeah, it made me think about finally getting that cat, I've dreamt of for years now. Maybe not.
that was way too quick lol
I can only agree 😂
true
It always took 11 days from the start of the Jam
This is incredible. I can't believe how talented people can be!
UVSU reminds me of a mobile game called Does Not Commute. It's a similar concept: you drive across the screen as fast as possible, and you have to dodge more and more of your past selves each time. It kind of becomes a puzzle game, where you have to strategize about how to leave your future self room to drive.
(edit: I got # 211 in Creativity and # 414 overall!!! )I've been watching GMTK for years and this was my first game jam where I had the skill to finish a game! I had no idea the highs and lows would be so intense; the absolute high of finishing a *playable game*, and the crushing low of not being allowed to fix it lmao
My low was realizing 10 minutes before release that I completely forgot music and sfx. 😅
@@360dom360 One person realised - before the submissions actually ended but too late to fix it - that they had left a bullet using the Godot logo placeholder sprite.
I spent a like one or two hours implementing a leaderboard just to break it in the final build and not realizing it was broken until it was too late 🙃
I spent the whole time thinking of what i should even do
@@derfl007 oh I did something similar, I wrote and recorded an entire scene of dialog with multiple characters where the story required mechanics I didn't know I wasn't going to be able to figure out 💀
Congrats Mark!
How you people do this in 48 hours is completely beyond me; Bravo!
1. Have a team.
2. Focus on creating a smallest viable product.
3. Stay up til 3 am to get it turn in on time.

'One Day Better' concept it's too hard
Streamer screamer seems very cathartic xD
This was my first ever game jam and my first ever proper game! I'm so excited to see everyone else's games.
GOOD LUCK AND WELL DONE to all that participated this year and those that was unable to finish on time but still gave it a go!
I like this video!
omgh those game are so brilliant bro
One day better made me cry just from you describing it. My bunny does all the same stuff for me. Pets are so wonderful.
I was hoping for an honorable mention, but my jaw dropped when I saw Princess Paladin as the first game you talked about. Thank you so much for hosting it was so much fun and the first jam I did where I slept at least 6 hours 😂
gamedev here. mind fully blown. totes respect for all the games made for this jam. kudo's!
One Day Better stood out as the only 2d game I’ve ever seen that truly hits you emotionally. Probably the best game made in the Gmtk game jam ever.
Damn! Streamer Screamer is exactly the game I imagined after the slenderman craze died down. I called it "Being John Slender" as a reference to the movie "Being John Malkovich" and it was EXACTLY like the game jam game! Glad to see, that someone made that idea a reality :)

Are we sure some of those games weren't just games that were pulled out of their harddrive from sometime back and finished or at least polished enough for the contest?
Wow. UVsU seems like one of the best and smartest games in GMTK history. It has SO much potential.
Love how GMTK's game jams keep on breaking records. This is one of the videos I'm excited for the most every year.
Very interesting
The prompt this year made for some amazing games! Reversing classic tropes truly made for unforgettable experiences!
I was laughing so hard at the Walkies dog zooming around dragging its owner and then right after comes One Day Better with its beatiful premise making me sob. God, I have to go hug my cats now.
Yeah, the pet themed ones were my favorites. Not just Walkies and One Day Better, but the attention seeking zoomies of Sneakerdoodle too. "You're truly the goodest of boys" sold that one for me.
insane.
Wow... Awesome games! Congrats to the teams!
"One day better" just hit me right in the feels. Should've been number 1.
EDIT: I now know it indeed is! Among the others. Fantastic.
The nice this is that all games on the vudeo are considered winners, with no actuall order.
It was number 1, together with the 19 others
Oh nice! Thanks for the clarification guys!
i rly dont get it ngl, everyone is raving about this game but i doubt anyone has played it. with story games its impossible to really be a big fan unless you actually experience it. just comes off as classic "animals getting updooted cos we love them".
descriptionary and streamer screamer are the two games which stick out to me for being novel concepts.
@@homeyworkey depends on your perspective. It didn't vibe with you, and that's fine. Streamer screamer didn't interest me at all, but I get why other people might be interested in it. One Day Better wasn't top 1 to me, but it was to my partner. One Day Better is clearly a lot more than just something with animals - I think it's about mental struggles, being supportive in a playful way, reminding you of the love you have for your pet(s) while also having an art style that I think is very close to mental struggles. There's no objective measure for winning this jam
I’m not a game developer, and I know next to nothing about coding, but I look forward to these jams every single year. The creativity and skill on show is totally unreal
Absolutely love these contest, one day I hope to contend in one. Amazing content keep it up 😅
so many of these looked incredible. LOVED Walkies!
Ran out of time to submit unfortunately but I was making a game like "ricochet kills", where a bullet launches from one location and bounces at angles off the wall to hit the targets. The twist was that the player didn't aim the bullet, but got to place walls in the arena to form a path to the goal.
By far, favorite game is "One day better," that shit is beautiful
Had a great time taking part in this jam and there were loads of amazing entries. Great job everyone!
My god, the creativity is amazing! 🥰🤗
my pc broke right before the jam :\ been trying to participate for like 3 years now and circumstances always get the better of me
Can’t believe our game made it in the video this year! Was a blast participating, and congrats to everyone who finished games!
By far, the most interesting games in this jam are the ones where you play as a pet and must interact with the humans from the point of view of the animal. Developers, make more of these!
The concept of UVSU is insane! Got me the most excited!
wow it's very creative idea in them head's I Like the Better day is's make me have a Big Vision about Feature!
I'd like to see a game based on the old College Humor video, "Tetris God."
An AI plays Tetris with you deciding the order in which they get pieces. Your goal is to see how quickly you can make them lose.
I can't believe I was able to actually finish a game for this jam! It's such a grind and a rush but you feel really good after.
OOOOH so this is what that scam the scammer game was based on. SICK!!! I LOVE IT!
the amount of creativity in this game jam >>>>>>
That was quick :o
