That episode was so relatable for me 😅Just like Richard I hate time questions...because I am in the zone when I paint, I don't care about time, it's fun. Ever since I am focused on painting I have no idea what things are called in Warhammer either 😅 I also enjoyed the behind the scenes glimpse for Everchosen. Placing third in Everchosen in 2019 I can say that the online aspect was definitely part of planning out the entry, not so much the painting itself, but I spent A LOT of time planning the camera angle, the background, the lighting and so on. I can say that none of the top 3 did any photoshop touchups. I remember I ended up picking a photo that was perfect as far as all the other aspects go that I mentioned, but it had a bit of a contrast issue due to a camera setting so I increased the contrast by like 2 steps in photoshop, but that's nothing you can't do with a camera while taking the pictures. Online competitions definitely are a different beast and if you are not proficient with camera settings and light you are at a disadvantage, even if you are a god painter for sure. I still think it was a great competition and definitely something I'd like to see repeated.
Thanks for editing the video to show photos of the subject matter in conversation as it makes us feel more involved in what you are talking about if we are unfamiliar with the model ect. I know it will take longer editing but I appreciate it. 😊
An especially amazing show guys! And in my defense, at the time of the encounter, I had been mid thought... "*sigh* 😩 it's the last day of my trip and I still haven't even caught a glimpse of Ri- *Rich magically appears at a table within 3 feet of me* - RICHARD GRAY! What else does one yell when Richard Gray manifests spontaneously in front of you!?
I’m a lot like Peachy in that it’s extremely hard for me to focus on a single model for a long time. I have to have zero distractions and I have to have taken my Adderall lol So I really truly admire a guy like Richard Gray, who exudes calm, and patience, and expertise and professionalism. What a great artist!
Rich is one of the best painters in the world and properly inspiring, and he's also one of the nicest people in the hobby to sit and have a chat to. Great episode as always fellas!
Painting rewards- I do the exact same thing! 5 infantry, vehicle, 5 infantry, character etc. Reminds me of the Peep Show scene 'the white toast is the pudding'.
I have "Painting Glasses" too. I took a miniature with me to the opticians, explained what I wanted them for, showed them where I'm typically holding it. They added the correct magnification to my prescription
You guys have been ripping out these round tables so often. It makes my day when I see a notification of a new upload from you guys. My favorite youtube vids.
Great interview. So, I'm an artist (paintings, murals) in everyday life. Finally relented during lockdown, buying and painting my first miniature.... Mortarion. Had so much fun painting him, followed up with Horus, Dorn and then a full Grey Knight army. The technique (taking pictures) we actually use on big walls, when you're too close to them to see the large shapes. Fun talk! PS: about the colors - great question by Jeff - there's a difference between 'local color' versus 'relative color'. Which is quite easily explained: in your mind, a tomato is red. But when painting one, the colors used can vary all across the spectrum, as long as the final values are working together. With metal, there is a lot of leeway, because metal reflects it's environment and you can actually get away with a lot, as long as you understand the pattern of how metal reflects (which is much harsher in a way).
Lovely interview. I was thinking that what struck me about those Imperial Fists was that despite the totally different techniques used on each they still sat very coherently together in the group images/as an army.
I absolutely love the Side Tracked Chats ! And these Interviews are amazing, you have got in some of my favourite Artists or Content Creators! Bring on Emperor of Two Thin Coats!
The living legend Richard Grey and Game Workshop’s/ Painting phase’s Peachy! The worlds of display painting and speed painting collide. Great stuff lads.
Such a fantastic guest, guys. Love Rich, always great to hear from him. Still haven't nailed nmm, but my ability to read and paint volumes was largely improved with his indirect tutelage. One of the modern masters. Always look forward to Rich's videos
The Changeling was such a great movie. The part where he's listening to the recording of the seance, my dog jumped up and started watching the door all of a sudden and it was perfect horror timing. Also rest of the episode was great, but I've had so few people know about The Changeling that it stood out to me. :)
I love watching Richard Gray videos n the background when I'm painting lol It's a lot like, oooh splotchy splotchy splotchy, look down, paint some, look up - oh my god wtf? How's he done that?!
Peak content. The knowledge shared in this episode is primal. It is hind-brain, base-line, legendary information. Like, proper ur-craft. Simply, to me, one of the most useful episodes of instruction I have ever seen for someone painting an ARMY. Many, many thanks!
1 hour in and I just want to say how much I agree with you when you say that today's and recent sculpts are sometimes overdetailed. I used to love 5th ed Bretonnian knights because of the freedom they gave you and the push to become a better painter to make them look good. I also like a lot the current MkVI HH space marines for the same reason. My 2 cents aside, great video and super guest, thank you so much guys!
Warmth and kindness exudes from his soothing and informative videos...and now we can see that matches up perfectly with the face! 😂 Great video and thanks for your continued inspiration Rich
This episode is so valuable. I feel like I've hit a ceiling for painting (selfless plug warpedworldminis), and getting personal perspective from successful painters in very energizing.
Loved this episode another great one, thank you, gents, and for such an incredible painter who loves textures, he can apply that comeback about the nmm. It was too smooth 😂
51:30 you said exactly why already: works better with contrasts. Most new people paint with contrasts anymore, and those look way better on some highly detailed bag or super wrinkly clothes compared to big blank space marine shoulder pads
About 20 years ago a bunch of us were watching Jaws with a mate who was the only one who hadn't seen it before, it was coming up to the part with the upturned small boat, when the face popped up in the hole in the hull, he jumped so much he threw hot chocolate all over himself. We all laughed so hard our ribs were hurting
Wow, weird hearing someone introduce themselves with a name we share. Worried to find out what middle name(s) this Nick Peachey has, just in case it get more uncanny 😅. So happy to find out I'm another Nick Peachey who enjoys 40k 😊 love the discussion!
Mini painting is so much like Golf, there are thousands of videos on how to do it, unlike other sports (one rarely sees videos on football techniques) innumerable techniques, famous painters/golfers have each stroke analyzed. And it’s a skill where every new member is welcomed with open arms.
I think newer models are possibly designed with a little more intention for contrast paints? lots of detail picked up a lot better than big open areas with that range (for the average joe!)
Thr details thing on models looks amazing. But my god, am I fed up painting rosary beads on my Sisters of Battle. Great vid as always guys, love these guests you guys are having and Rich seems like a top chap too, very nice 2hrs to spend listening to you all. Also, on "stealing ideas' my boss says about stealing ideas to use is better thought of as S.W.I.P.E. Steal With Integrity. Practically Everything.
I did the same thing with my optomitrist. When i asked him about it he stated he had a couple of professional billiards players that had to focal point changed to 9ft just beyond the end of the table. He then asked me to act like i was painting a miniature and then decided on a 1.5ft focal point. We also chose the largest lense we could find so that the rims are not in my view. If you have insurance and your prescription doesn't change you can typically get a normal pair of glasses one year and figure painting glasses the next and then rotate to get them for free.
The only movie that's truly scared me is Johnny got his gun, idk if it can be classed as horror but the concept is scarier than most other proper horror movies. Really stays with you, the book is just as disturbing but very difficult to read
Richard's stuff is amazing, and somehow even better in the flesh from the few I have seen on display. I am suprised Peachy let him have coffee and not a cup of Earl Grey though
Great video lads. Very interesting info from Richard and ruddy nora! there's some ace painting there! Got a follower right here! I'm like Richard, i much prefer to do one model, rather than batch. The only game I get to play is blood bowl (as my friend refuses to play anything besides that and 90's epic), but I find painting up teams very frustraiting as i get bored of the same scheme.. and no guns! In my case I have to paint in pairs, do one then paint a single mini, then another pair. Just to keep my mind occupied. However, this leads to slight variations in colour as I forget what my original mix was 😂. Keep on entertaining us like you do. A really great set up this is. Oh and Richard's models, either inspire me to be better or to banish my split ended brushes and take up needle work 😂😂
HVM Workbench has actually been comissioned to make pictures for Warhammer Community by the Middle Earth team at soem point (some Ent stuff). Don't know if there's any other stuff like that done by GW
it was 1996 i remember that incident with the 12 year old and the dad being great and it winning Gold i remember hearing a lot of people talking about it going around the event

Ok i should point out the custodes when entering the flagship of horus they immediately turned on the emperor so yeah they can be turned to chaos. Even though they tried stopping themselves they couldn't an the Emperor had to kill his right hand man an body guards
why is GW making heavily detailed models you ask? to sell more paints of course! it feels like every single mini has a skull, a leather bag, gems, jewelry, parchment and a bunch more other stuff - only so you need to buy paints to paint all of those details. i absolutely hate how much crap there is on the GW models, and i found myself having so much more fun painting star wars legion minis because they aren't crammed with a dozen little details. if GW stopped selling paints i think their models would be WAY less cluttered.
Geoff: I wonder if gw sculptors feel the same way you do, about your haircuts, when they see a kitbash? Sculptor: why you putting that on there!? If I wanted that on there I would have put it on there!😆
My 13 year old is likely a better painter than I am, and it's not because he had a lot of tutelage from me (though he's had some), it's because of people like Richard posting tutorials for him to follow! Where was that when I was a kid?!
I had a lot of fun, thanks guys! Although hopefully you can get the right tasty treats next time ;)

Richard's NMM is good to the point where I can watch him paint it, and in spite of the evidence I've just seen, my brain goes - "Nah, that's gold"
Great video. I watch Peachy because his work is achievable. I watch Richard because his work is aspirational. Both equally valid and useful
Beautifully and perfectly put 👌👏
