I really really like the design of the Nurgle Marine. Don't get me wrong, GW's sculpts for the modern Death Guard are great, but I really like the simplicity in this design without the need for gore, mutations or huge horns. It's refreshing. Some of those points were very relatable. I first started the hobby, gaming and painting in about 93 (40K was soon switching up from 2nd to 3rd edition). The paint styles are really quite different now. They were brighter, cleaner, happier?*
Now, there's more emphasis on realism, the grime and wear and tear of battle; not brand new out of the forge.
    * remember the free GW "magazine" you'd sometimes get with a purchase (Red Imperator Titan Vs. Yellow Mega-Gargant on cover); bright Gretchin w/ bright red gun. Well enough painted but painted with a kind of child's mindset!

    The cat bit was good!
What did we learn... your bases were a bit crap, but they got better, and; maximum contrast is overrated. Some of these pieces are really really cool, my favourites are:
    1. Beastmen, highly unusual, brutal minis with a soft paint scheme, weird, very cool.
    2. Krieg, love the colours and composition, the banner is great, although there's something about it that doesn't sit right with me (I'm not sure what).
    3. Theoden, a great example of a LoTR mini (but Arwen's base is better).
Special mentions: The Bretonian Knight, he's awesome, but no shield... what were you thinking!? Also that guardsman facing up to the Khorne marine... he must be Sly Marbo incognito.

  • @docbun
    @docbun 3 года назад

Thanks Trov! just like hearing you talk about the pieces - I don't feel the need for more criticism per se; just walking us through what you perceive in the piece is very interesting. It would be fun to finish with one of your "more creative" pieces in contrast, to show what would probably not be "golden demon material" but you are yet totally proud of and happy to talk about. I don't recall if you have commented other pieces previously - would you mind pointing me to existing videos if you have?
Thanks again for the video and have a nice week-end!
EDIT: Oh, and for my favorite piece, I'd probably have to go with your Theoden (in part because I can't really care for W40K lore in general), though the Beastmen I also like a lot.

What I really like about your work is that it has none of those 'heavy metal 80's' white highlights that - unfortunately - seem to be ever-present in this game. You put a lot of effort in to making it a cohesive whole. Great!
If I'd have to pick a favorite, it'd be the Kroot-collector. Some models are just aesthetically much better suited to painting and being visually interesting in shapes and textures.
I'm a traditional painter myself (canvas etc.) and maybe I'd suggest adding a few 'harder' strokes with a brush here and there to prevent the surface from getting too smooth. It gives a lot of character with just a tiny bit of work.

I won a total of 5 Golden and Silver Demons in 1999/2000, then quit painting for 20 years. Looking back, my old miniatures don't hold up to current standards at all. 🙈

I'm Australian, I visited France in 2004 at the age of 16, every month white dwarf buyer. I was blown away at the the golden demon in the french white dwarf. I wish I kept those issues.

I like the last one the best. The pale horse looks better for contrast and I like the dry dusty look to it. You are an amazing painter. Thanks for doing this one.

As far as improvements, (this is a genuine question, not a criticism nor suggestion) how about the tail on the horse? (Regarding the Nurgle Knight.) Would it be possible to give the tail more depth/3-D? His mane appears to be more 3-d than the tail? I think?

watching this video certainly was a humbling experience. It's really funny having a look at a model and only thinking "wauw this is amazing". And then afterwards finding out about all these things you didn't see or understand beforehand. When you critiqued Arwen's face I was shocked. But then hearing the arguments I understood what could be changed.

They are obviously great, but if there is something missing from pretty much all models it's object lighting. I think it usually gets overboard, but your muted sense of aesthetics, and masterful blending, it'd be properly applied.
    Otherwise, very nice video.

I like your honesty, I mean you can't really be too critical as they litterally won awards from a competition which is the zenith of the art form

god that 2006 marine was baller as hell. I think the grungeyness of it really works well on that model and i know you really like to critique it and be objective, but i think it DUNKS on a lot of more recent paintjobs

Lovely models, indeed! But I think many of the award winning miniatures the last decade are getting to technical. And I really dislike competition when it comes to artwork. Every painted mini is a winner in my book. Keep up the good work, all of you!!!

Man, crazy to think I saw some of these in the White Dwarf I used to read in the school library as a kid

Nowadays they'd throw most of these in the trash bin and kick you out.
So, to win a GM you just have to paint their box art, got it.
