As someone who was given the 40k starter set in the mid 90s.... The Space Marines were always my favourite.
I remember visiting a store for the first time and learning the rules and buying The paints and slowing working on my first gray pile of shame.
I still have my original ones and the books, which was great as it explained all the different chapters and factions.
They do need to make more video games to grab the younger generations and as we've seen with the Space Marine 2 game.
They'll always be the draw for GW.

TSR were a great content creator in the 80's and early 90's pumping out a lot of good videogames (particularly in partnership with SSI) as well as the best D&D supplements and settings that players still wish were revived today (none of WOTC settings has been as memorable), quality definitely declined after they were acquired by Wizards of the Coast who had a similar corporate greed and lawyer fetish as Disney.

I find it interesting that you mention the video game crash, everything I've read suggests it had little to no effect on the UK, which had a pretty thriving home computer industry well into the early to mid 90s. Obviously you've done your research and the man's book itself seems to acknowledge it but I would suggest that they survived the crash because most a British gaming companies did.

We didn't have a video game crash in the UK and I am sure there wasn't one in Mainland Europe either.

Only just started watching, but FML it's weird. I went to the same school many years later (started early 90's).
So, "Altrincham" is pronounced "Alltringam", maybe "Oltringam" depending on whether you're from Bowden or Sale (joke for the locals, there).
"Cheshire" would be "Cheshuh" (bit like the end syllable of Worcester).
Interestingly, one of their 1st FF novels (Island of the Lizard King) is dedicated to a guy who was deputy head when I was a student there who taught Geography: I believe he taught Ian Livingstone directly.
There's a few other famous (and infamous) students and teachers who were there too.
