What really sucks is that Klaus was never always a devious, Francine loving fish, if he had won the race he would've went on to do so much more, but instead he was kept inside a bowl, and basically was forced to care for his literal kidnappers, sure he has times where he's an ass, but that is all forgotten when you remember that he is just a man, a man who swims in his own feces!

Unlike Meg or Zoidberg there have been many times where the Smiths are shown to actually care about Klaus. He is Stan's valet and it shown that these two share a bond. Also Jeff, often calls him Mr. Klaus. If not for Roger I think Klaus would have been well integrated into the family.

Yea, Klaus can't be compared to Meg because even in his punchingbag episodes he gets very strong character moments and he's actually usually going toe-to-toe, and is often cast as a sympathetic character. For example, his denied manhood is a constant point made and rarely as a joke.
For a Setup McFarlane show, it's surprisingly uncruel.

I feel like Klaus works much better than Meg as a punching bag, because we have been shown many ways he genuinely sucks. Every time he shares an opinion, it’s meant to be the worst possible thing and every occasion he gets to have even the smallest amount of power, he immediately abuses it.

    • @InsanityVirus
      @InsanityVirus Год назад +64

Yeah, they've made jokes about him being antisemitic, shitty opinions, and shown multiple times in the ways he sucks ass. Plus, they've had a few times where Klaus was able to get his own revenge and reverse the punches. _(And I feel like everyone is made fun of a bit more equally, whereas in Family Guy, most of it goes to Meg while occasionally others get it)._ There are still moments where you obviously feel bad and wonder maybe if they should've toned it down a bit, but it's way more funnier and well-executed with Klaus.
I think they've started to try to do this with Meg by turning her into a psychopath/crazy person with some of her later episodes, but that feels like it's the result of years of abuse, and doesn't hit the same. Meg turned into that, Klaus started as a dick

Klaus is definitely a fascinating and creative character. It does suck that oftentimes he has been used as a joke but admittedly early on in the series he was kind of a douche. The honest truth is Klaus does not deserve what the Smith family does to him. He never got his body back which granted I know if he did get his body back That would be an extreme transformation in the series, but the fact is he did not get his body back and there was a chance he could have but the Smith family just didn't care. Or at least Stan just didn't care. Haley and Francine laughed saying that Stan deserved it when Klaus switched bodies with him

I find klaus pretty unlikeable, but also very entertaining in small doses. I feel like the writers on american dad really understand how to write a punching bag character without it getting Too extreme and hard to watch. It might be because hes in a fish body, or it might be because he’s a bit of a scummy adult, but it feels way less meanspitited than Meg in family guy, for example.

    • @supaskiltz9877

I think for me it’s in the character but more importantly the people around them. Klaus in his human form is a shitty person and in his fish form is a pretty shit as well and that’s excluding the Nazi stuff. Everyone else in the house is either kinda bad or good. Francine and Stan are alright and Steve and Hayley are pretty good overall with some flaws. Roger gets a pass because his stuff is so exaggerated that it’s hard to take it seriously which is the point of him.
Meg on the other hand isn’t even the worst character in the house, in fact she’s probably the best one in the house. Chris isn’t bad but they make fun of Meg for being a “loser” when Chris is even worse in that regard. Stewie, Brian, Lois and Peter are all way worse people then Meg so it’s a lot easier to feel bad for her when the people around her are actively bad people. I’d say Stewie gets the same pass for being extremely exaggerated tho like Roger.

Yet those very same traits are what makes him weirdly endearing and so damn entertaining to watch. And in spite of those negative traits, he still has some redeeming qualities that allows us to root for him from time to time.
But unlike Shake. Klaus's more positive traits surfaces more often. Which is why we feel sorry for him whenever he gets clowned by the rest of the family... But whenever Klaus's negative traits does show, we get to understand why the family treats him the way they do.

Then again, Klaus IS pretty evil. If left to his own design, he can accomplish some very devious things. He once vowed revenge on Steve and Roger so severe, it turned them into complete, paranoid wrecks. And remember when he was surprised that Snot came back from Jewish Camp, and when Francine put that label on his fishbowl (to help Steve in a Spellathon) that said "antisemite" he responded "HEY! So that's how you spell it?" Oh, and he doesn't like to share because his favorite puppets (that he accidentally murdered) never taught him how? Seriously though, I love how the writers evolved the character to be somehow a trashy dudebro. I love how he has this weird Florida based crew, and they returned for a couple episodes, and he wants all these Pickle Ricks on his fishbowl. It's fun to see how much he gets treated like crap, but it's even more fun to see why he kind of deserves it. That's what makes it much funnier and much better than what they do to Meg. It doesn't feel so much like punching down as it does keeping him down so he doesn't do something evil or worse...make another hip hop video.

I think all the awful moments with the Smiths are justified. After all if the Smiths were nice to him maybe he would be a better person?

I do like how they have been validating him more in the newer seasons. You don't have boys, quit lying = he actually has boys. I would love an episode where many of his "lies" are proven to be true, even little lies like kicking a football over an arbys(burger King?) And then he does it with a tiny football(Klaus: I'm a goldfish it's not my fault you assumed a full size football 10 times my size)
Episode could end with the family saying that "maybe he's always told the truth. Maybe Germans have always told the truth" as the family slowly looks toward the screen.😂 Fade to black

Actually he never had a chance at a new life Stan made it clear that after Klaus cooked breakfast Klaua was going to get forced back into a fish body. Besides his thirst for Francine is relatable with the audience, she triggers that Dexter's Mom and Peg Pete energy.

Allow me to impress upon you the severe mistake you have made. For years, my conduct has been largely benign. And yet, without provocation, you have severed our detante, and forced me to unleash upon you the vengeful flames of a thousand suns. You shall curse your mother's for the day of your birth! So go now, GO! And begin your life of fear, knowing that when you least expect it, the looming sword of Damocles will crash down upon you, cleaving you in twain! And as you gaze upon the smoking wreckage that was once your life, you will regret the day you crossed...the wrong FISH!
    Klaus's best moment by far

Im not the biggest Klaus fan but im glad hes got more to do lately even if he is mostly a lightning rod for the Smiths. The thing about Klaus being a punching bag is at least hes not an actual family member. He didn't deserve to be put in a fish, but at least the CIA was the reason behind it. Meg on the other hand is the Griffin's daughter. And that feels so much worse to me if shes the punching bag in their family. One more way i like American Dad over Family Guy i guess lol

I've actually noticed that since the episode No Weddings And A Funeral, the relationship with the Smiths and Klaus has changed a lot. He has integrated offically into the family in a lot of ways. His alcove is considered his officially. He's still a douche but he's a douche whose a part of the family.

10:16 Weddings and a funeral is better than Seahorse Seashell Party. That episode is dull because they are just stuck in the house the whole time. Meg calling out her family was played straight and there was no irony to it. In 3 Weddings and a Funeral, the whole episode was an over the top farce. It's like a dark version of Looney Tunes.

Also they really don’t care if Klaus actually dies
In 1 episode they are partying together and Francine accidentally drinks Klaus from a hose and swallows him whole and they just cheered and partied on
No one even cared that he was trapped in Francine’s stomach and would eventually either suffocate or digest inside her
Shows what little care they have

I do think that any cruel joke in an animated sitcom is shameful to me and my home country in Canada at least Chilly Beach had it a little better because it takes place in Canada because as Canadians we don’t put targets on anyone no matter the reason.
