Hey! In the video I mention that Seth said in an interview that the writers room didn't know how to write a teenage girl. I found this well known info on several sites, but I can't find the original interview he said this. So take that with a pinch of salt.
Just wanted to clear that up, thanks ✌️

    • @HereIAm247
      @HereIAm247 2 года назад +1663

I think it is actually intentional. Both as a joke, but also as a hint, that maybe she can become more attractive if she made the effort. Some unused potential. They actually hinted at it in the multiverse episode as well, where we see super hot Meg walking down the sidewalk. Her face is the same, but she have a clearly well maintained body, which she shows off in tight clothing, high heels, and longer hair. All with a confident, sensual walk. In my eyes, this is a hint to what she could become, if she polished herself a bit.

    • @HereIAm247
      @HereIAm247 2 года назад +464

@ferret Well, most people are somewhat unpolished, due to out culture. :) Regular Meg wears jeans and t-shirts that are baggy, and not showing off her feminine assets. She have kind of a bad posture, and a bored/unintrested look on her face (not that I really blame her). She is somewhat insecure, have low self worth, don't set boundaries, and a bit socailly awkward, which shows in her body language. (I love Meg, so this is not critique, it is just the way she is written). When we see hot multiverse Meg, she has excellent posture, obviously takes good care of her body, shows of her feminine attributes, and have a more relaxed and confident body language and facial expression. Same with every other female 'hot' character on the show.
So I would say Meg is unpolished, and many people in the modern world is. Because it is in the culture to not really take pride in your appearance, but our biology is still hardwired to be attracted to people who do, and on some level respect them more. Multiverse Meg is a hint at what she could become, if she did take more pride in her appearance, and developed herself inside and out, the 'optimal' version of her, so to speak. Wether or not she will reach that depends on the effort she is willing to put in, and her confidence that she can get there. (and of course, wether or not she wants to get there)

By doing this comment with so much projection you are also proving that you cannot relate at all with men. Because if you looked at this logically you would see how her mother was writtern as the boss of the house. If they didn't relate to female characters at all how would they write a mom? Adult women also don't relate to teenage boys at all. I don't see any media being written to teenage boys made by adult women.

Also, while in some ways someone could interpret her character as making fun of misogyny (maybe because obviously Meg looks better than Peter and Chris- who knows), it’s interesting that I don’t see many significantly complex female characters from him in any of his writing.
And I believe he has openly admitted that he struggles to write female characters, which really explains his writing style to me ngl. To me it seems he is mostly female avoidant when creating characters (he mostly makes male characters), and on other occasions uses a female character to address stereotypical femininity/misogyny/feminism, which means using a female character when “female” is what’s being addressed (and relying on “male” as the default for all other issues and traits).

I'm aware of the excuse he made about how he and his team who were all males didn't know how to write a teenage female character but instead of doing the sensiible thing by hiring on a female write to help, they just put every hateful thing they could towards Meg where it as practically hate for her just existing. I mean name a male character in the show who got just as, if not more hate and violence targeted at him compared to Meg. You can't lol.
And keep in mind, I don't hate Family Guy, I have fondness for it, it was a part of my childhood and I still watch it today even if the newer episodes are bland and going the way of the Simpsons IMO. But I think it's fine to point out things in he show.

The hurricane episode was really cool and sad at the same time. It was incredible to see the whole family crumbling, the second Meg stood up for herself.
It took her 10 minutes to paint a mental portrait of her relatives and point out everything wrong with them, I was watching the episode like "OMG finally, I've been thinking that for years".

The fact that the Meg hate from the writers stemmed from the fact that they were all male, and couldn’t relate to her. boggles my freaking mind.
You know what they could’ve done with her character at that point?
Drop the stereotypical teen girl drama.
Make her the clever one of the group.
In fact show her as the person that always seems to know what to do to fix the mess the rest of the family causes.
You could even throw in a few moments in which she does something to ensure the status quo returns.
You could even have that as part of her character, Where she tries to keep the family the same as much as possible because it makes it easier for her to figure out the stuff they’ll get into and moreover what to do to fix it.
Have her be the successful member of the family.
That she’s the reason the family has the money for all the crazy shit they get into.
If you don’t know how to write teen girl drama storylines, then don’t write teen girl drama storylines. But also then don’t turn around and take out your aggression at being unable to do that on the character they would normally be for.

The writers couldn’t relate to a young woman so they decided the only thing to do was abuse the character? Did no one actually realize how bad that sounds? Sure it’s a funny edgy show with just as edgy jokes, but there is a line where you just takes things a bit too far. People are supposed to actually find it funny. What was so funny about it? I never understood it. Low-key says a lot about the writers if they can’t come up with good edgy jokes that doesn’t always end it “abuse the woman/young woman”. Yikes.

Yeah I honestly really enjoy some edgy jokes, but they are hard to do well.
For example, I like Squidbillies, which has a similar dynamic with the main father character being abusive to his son. I think the jokes work better there because the main character is much more obviously shown to be a bad person in the show. You are supposed to be on his son's side, not his. Also, the son gets along with other characters, so he isn't completely defined by negativity.
Meanwhile, basically everyone in the show bullied Meg for seasons. So, she was only ever allowed to be a punching bag, and the audience is supposed to side with the bullies. Sure it's edgy, but it's boring.

Mila Kunis was literally a teenager when she first started doing the voice of Meg. I know a lot of girls with parents that like to bully them and then try to pass it off as harmless actions, they get called dramatic. This is literally something that happens in real life. It’s the most accurate thing and it’s honestly scary how the writers did this without knowing what they were actually doing. Making abusive parents.

What’s amazing about the whole “writers didn’t know how to write a teenage girl” dilemma is that there were so many ways around this that didn’t include making the teenage girl character a punching bag for no reason. Here are a few much better directions they could’ve taken:
    - Turn Meg into a little girl instead of a teenager. It’s much easier to write a stereotypical kid instead of a teenager who will express more complex problems in the show. They already have Chris to fulfil the angsty teenager role anyway, making Meg 9 years old would’ve created a balance between her, Chris and Stewie anyway and would’ve created so much potential for the three of them since they’re all in different age ranges.
    - get actual input from teenage girls or adult women who were once teenagers too on what their adolescence was like. It’s what real writers do when they can’t relate to a character’s experience. That’s what makes a talented writer, the ability to empathise and learn about other people’s situations on a personal level to the point where you can write through their lens. This just shows how lazy and incompetent the writing of family guy was from day 1.
    - turn Meg into a stereotype of teenage girls like the writers did for the rest of the characters. They have the ability to get away with not doing that much research since they’re making a parody of the average American family. Stewie doesn’t act like a real baby, real babies don’t talk or try to kill their parents. Honestly, turning Meg into an “overdramatic” teenage girl who freaks out at the smallest things or a dumb cheerleader would’ve fit in with the rest of the family because the characters of family guy are not supposed to be realistic.
Honestly, so many options. And the only thing the writers could think of was to take the laziest, most unoriginal idea imaginable and are now confused on why fans are starting to get annoyed with it.

It's sad. When "Seahorse Seashell Party" aired, Meg stood up for herself but it started a quick freefall for her, since now she just seems numb to the debasing and seems like she sometimes has psychotic episodes. Granted, those have lessened over time and now she seems to be... I'd say cool, but others would say numb. Whenever adversity pops up she deals with it to get through the 22 minutes of the show.
How would they go back? Back on Peter's rampant idiocy, Lois' violently psychotic state/incredibly narcissistic, Chris seeming to have become a pessimistic douche, Stewie being effeminate and harmless, and Brian becoming a hypocritical douche. And that's with the rest of the cast, too. Joe was a noble handicapped man and now he's waiting to die and taking digs to him every scene he's in. Quagmire went from a classy nymphomaniac to a mean guy that sometimes has sex and is a little depressing. "And Then There Were Fewer" parts 1 and 2, "American Dad!", and "The Cleveland Show" depreciated the involved characters. "The Cleveland Show" torpedoed it's own characters. Cleveland went from being semi-intelligent and practicing restraint to an attempt at a "black" Peter. I wonder if Cleveland Jr. went from being energetic and happy to slightly sociopathic and filling every hole with food.
Then there's "American Dad!". Stan went from a close-minded, Conservative dude to a character I don't expect to act stupid (which I know is a theme of Seth's shows, idiotic fathers). Francine went from dim-witted but combat-capable social butterfly to a dumb but combat capable sociopath. Steve went from idolizing his father to being genuinely creepy and a perv. Haley was a proud liberal who fought for her beliefs to a character that is just lazy. Roger was seemingly all-knowing though weak to desires such as being liked and his appetite to food. He's... shallow, that's all I can describe it as.
Sadly, I think after a while, Seth MacFarlane stops being keenly interested in the stories of his shows and moves on. This is unfortunate because Seth is a good writer and multi-talented voice actor. He should write something for Hulu since it would be free from censors, ect..

@@mysteriiis And I feel like it's a bit of sexism, too. I know Chris wasn't really bullied early on, but Meg gets it everywhere she goes (at school, at home) and I think that's why they removed Neil. I think she would have eventually said yes to him and with the changing social climate, he would have been good to her. What was a little funny at first (just because her voice actresses are gorgeous women and seem personable so it was a juxtaposition) just has seemed mean since like... 2010.
That makes me mad these characters never age. Stewie would be 23-24 now, Meg and Chris would have been at college already and be entering into the world of searching for a job (which I think would have been a funny commentary on finding a job). And I think it would have been fun to see Lois and Peter get old. As I liked in the movie, Lois is harmlessly perceptive and Peter would have gone from a genuinely hazardous person to a funny old man who backstepped (just because Lois would have made him out of worry).
I would like if it ended and a new series called "Another Timeline" could have aired. Where Peter is sensible and employable (but jobless, a commentary on how employers want an employer who is smart but dumb) but still "stupid" in the way all sitcom dads are (ignorant of the changing times), Lois has no reasons for psychotic breaks because she has a job to keep her mind trained (a desk job at a school), Meg is entering the job market but nothing good is hiring so she has a job at a dollar store managing (she's worked there for a few years and started mid-way through college), Chris would be married and a stay-at-home dad minding two children mid-way through elementary with visits from Lois and Peter who "help" but are just there to see the grandkids, Stewie would be doing stellar at college but tries repeatedly to approach his sexuality intelligently while a greatly aged Brian offers advice; not wanting his learning to suffer because he was distracted with figuring himself out.

I really wish they would bring back Karen (Peter’s sister) or even Micky (Peter’s bio dad) Lois’ parents are still around but Peter has no extended family to regularly interact with like Carter or Babs.
Plus Karan obviously looks like Peter meaning Micky is probably her dad too. Theres plenty of episode stories that could come out of that.

Honestly having a sibling/loved one gaining all the attention is like being a background character in your story, as if you're just a placeholder just to get replaced.

Meg is a product of writers having no idea how to make a fleshed out teenage female character. They probably found her character incredibly difficult to write and just restored to making cruel jokes after a while. People won’t read this far so fair waring because it’s a long comment.
Personally, my views on family guy are mixed. On one hand, i still enjoy the cruel and dark jokes. In another, i really wished the show ended a while back. Meg has been through hell throughout the show. Think of the worst thing that’s happen to a person in existence, and that’s Meg. The writers held no punches. They went after her so brutally and viciously with no remorse on sight. I believe they over did it because in between does moments of cruelty, their was heart in one particular episode. It’s called “Seahorse Seashell Party" and i hate it. Not because it’s bad, but because of how much they developed the character of Meg, just to tear it apart.
Meg goes off on the hole family. Her mom, her brother, and her father. She expresses her years of abuse, torture, and torment, from a family that honestly did not love her. In this episode which was taken so serious for most of the time, develops Meg into a very self aware woman who chooses to leave this self destructive family. But just as Meg made her points on all her family, the episode ends with Meg going back on her word, and forgiving a family that cause so much pain into her life. I hate when the show takes itself serious, because it forces the audience to acknowledge that all the horrible actions the people have taken to others, did happen. It wasn’t just a gag, or a cutaway, no, they really did hurt Meg.
“Why show the audience serious episodes full of dark and real writing if their not gonna follow through on that?”
That’s why i always come back to Bojack, because that show does take itself serious and follows through on that.
