As the show has gone on, Lois became more and more the character who hated her life choices. Bullying Meg to make herself feel better, cheating on Peter and regretting her marriage, and doing anything to make her “happier”

The extreme cleaning episode highlighted this in a big way. By the end, she had thrown every member of her family out of the house only to discover that she felt truly empty, she needs all the distractions and craziness in her life in order to forget how little she actually has going for her in her own life.
When she said a mother has nothing if she no longer has groceries, she literally meant it.

@@spicybeantofu I'd say he's pretty happy lol. He's kind of an egomaniac and a pessimist which shows through Brian. But he does a looooot more than family guy. You'd be blown away how many projects he's been a part of. He gets to choose to do whatever interests him because of the acclaim family guy got him. But he's kind of obligated to keep the show running at this point and I think that sense of obligation shows in the tone of the show now. Especially with how much more mean spirited it gets the farther in you go.

@@spicybeantofu Seth mostly has walked away from those shows; Family Guy and American Dad, he makes like almost no input on them except he does a bunch of the voices. American Dad is all left now to Matt Weitzman, one of the 3 original creators for it. As for Family Guy, he's admitted on record he hasn't like helped write an episode since I think at the latest 2010.

if that's what you like then you should watch "for better or for worse". it's a (rather short lived) TV version of the comic strip series of the same name about the patterson family who go about their daily lives with their family and friends in toronto. the comedy is very subtle and very down to earth (unlike shows like family guy where everything is outlandish and in your face) and it's just overall a wholesome as fuck series for people that want a adult show that actually feels like it was made for adults.
careful if you move onto the comics, though because i guess they get a bit darker with more series topic such as one girl cutting her hair short for the soul reason that she had a step-dad (or just her mom's boyfriend. i can't remember that exact detail) that was basically molesting/sexually harassing her and would do so while talking about how pretty her hair is. so ya,if you go past the show you'll find more serious topics so just kind of be ready for that.

I think Lois hates Meg the most because she is jealous of her. Meg has proven herself to be extremely capable in many circumstances and most likely has an extremely bright future, whereas Lois married a pool boy and became a housewife despite once having the same outlook. It would explain why Peter is a lot nicer without her there, he appears to be happy and content with the majority of his life so it wouldn't bother him.
Basically she is bitter about how her life turned out and wants to bring Meg down to such a level so as to feel superior. This along with her complete inability to take blame, and general superiority complex most likely fuelled by her extremely privileged upbringing, makes her character one of the worst narcissists I've ever seen on TV.

I think you're completely spot on! Also, she might be jealous of how much better of a mother Meg will possibly be in the future. In the episode where Chris, Meg, Peter and Lois swap roles, Meg is shown to easily handle the housework and childcare better than Lois, showing that the way Lois frets and complains is pathetic and how held together Meg is throughout her role as a housewife and mother.

you guys have to start looking at Marge and Barts relationship as an apt comparison and not marge and lisa's as he's also the family's dysfunctional lightning rod . i admit the chunky think is on point because the last time lisa developed an eating disorder marge ignored it in favor of nelson, but blatant favortism shown by marge and homer is a huge problem. remember when lisa crippled bart marge's response was to get upset at him not only did she blame because it wouldn't have happened if he wasn't better then her, but she and the episode treated bart as a sociopath for not thinking about lisa's feelings. the sad thing i'm inclined to see homer as the better parent of the two.

@@asherose9149 Compared to Family Guy, the Simpsons are wholesome but far from being a perfect family. I've seen in the old episodes that Lisa is the favorite child. She's intelligent, gifted in music, level headed, and everyone accepts her. Bart on the other hand isn't so lucky. He's wild, dangerous, and a trouble maker, the school hates him, the town pretty much hates him, and both his parents barely tolerate him. The only thing that separates them is that Bart has friends, while Lisa is socially awkward with no friends. Bart is such a troublemaker that Marge would yell, "Bart! NO!" on instinct, because he's known to cause many problems, and when Lisa would be the one who did something bad, like ruining a BBQ that Homer does to one up Flanders because she chose to go vegetarian and tried to force her whole family into doing it too, then she would say that line, and when they scolded her for this, they would react to Bart instead, not knowing how to handle this coming from the "perfect child".

Something that a lot of people seem to forget about Lois is that she used to the popular rich party girl who bullied the unpopular kids at her school, and it's very clear what the writers want to state: How could a person like that grow into a meek submissive housewife figure without any resting behavior. Lois never really grew out of her toxic behavior and it shows, most notably with Meg the type of "geeky" unpopular girl that she treats exactly like she would've have her victims in her teenhood.
Also i really didn't like the aspect of Lois character where she's never portrayed is being in the wrong and always always with an excuse to fall back on. Though some newer episodes are pushing her away from that, notably "Customer of the Week" and that was great.

What I find ironic about lois is that she grew up rich but doesn't want to be rich herself, she's happier being upper middle class and is happy with her family being upper middle class. In fact what's even weirder is in the earlier seasons Consuela was their housekeeper for a while but eventually Consuela was fazed out and Lois does most of the housework now. I don't know where I was going with this, I guess the point i'm trying to make is that her past doesn't match up with her present.

Although she started positive, Family Guys's writers wanted Lois to be less boring, but in doing so make her very unlikable. Through stories of her past sex life, child upbringing and unhinged temperament, we got to see other sides of Lois that made her 'interesting' , but left a bad taste in our mouth of how low she would go. In short, Lois has gone downhill from responsible housewife to responsible for everyone's misery.

i agree. i think the writers thought it’d be funny to have a running joke about everyone hating meg but they probably should’ve just kept that to peter. it’s overkill at this point and the joke stopped being funny a long time ago. she used to be the scapegoat and now she’s just a victim lol. this goes to show that family guy has lost the heart of its show and solely relies on gags over their characters. people say that it’s supposed to be a comedy and not taken seriously, but i’ve seen way funnier adult cartoons that also touch on real subjects. bojack horseman always comes to mind. family guy started out as a satirical raunchy comedy and turned into something far worse

@@crab2195 I've never agreed with a reply so much in my life. You perfectly explained how I feel. Not only that but family guy still has the family adore each other and come together no matter what the circumstances. Even though Peter would rag on meg, he was also ready to give Meg money for a purse in the episode where meg pretends to be a teen mom in the first few seasons. He pulled out his wallet happily when Meg asked for a new purse, unfortunately he couldn't afford the Prada bag she wanted, but he also still loved his daughter. The close moments they had in the beginning made it very obvious Peter was just joking, in the show he is "mentally retarded" which is from the writers not me saying it, so his jokes were always weird and messed up but not hateful like now. He loved his daughter and adored her and would do anything for her. Now he just completely hates meg practically. The whole family. I remember when Lois took Meg to get a makeover. Even though she said a lil rude comment at the end when Meg said it's work being pretty "not for me it is" she was still willing to help out her daughter and make her daughter feel beautiful but also did try to tell Meg she was beautiful the way she was at the beginning of the episode. I don't think the comment was geared towards Meg being ugly. More so Lois just trying to make herself look good. The one thing I will say is they brought Chris back into Meg's inner circle. They had him hating on her for awhile but now they stick together and anytime he does rag on her it's more brotherly than pure hate.

@@nevaehonrefni exactly! i’m so glad we both see the show for what it’s becoming. my favorite word comes to mind: flanderization. not sure if you heard of it but it comes from the simpsons, where a characters personality is over exaggerated throughout the show and relegates them to one trait. i find that so interesting because that’s exactly what happened to family guy. peter started off as “mentally retarded” but crossed the line into plain idiotic and nonsensical. lois started out as a mother with a wild side, and turned into a terrible mom with no redeeming qualities. i know people say the same of all other characters but those were the two you mentioned and i agree! the show has fallen victim to poor writing and lazy character design. i find it so hard to enjoy the show at this point because there’s so many adult cartoons that do what they’re trying to do, but actually succeed. the fact that i cried watching cartoon characters die in bojack horseman shows how powerful this form of art can be. but no. the writers seem to think their cutaways were what made people love the show. they’re wrong. they kept us entertained, but the heart of its show was in its characters. they mention at the end of this video that lois stands out from the rest of the tv moms and i have to disagree. like you said, she could’ve been the “mom you don’t anger”. she could’ve been a character with nuance and flaws (which isn’t very common for mothers on tv), while still having some sort of empathy. i hate to see what the show has become, but seeing that there is much better out there… perhaps family guy has had its time.

Lois almost sees her daughter as competition for male attention. She knows that she’s probably the most attractive woman in quohog, and also resents her daughter for her youthfulness.
I’m fully aware that this isn’t what the creators wanted to showcase, BUT it all comes together surprisingly cleanly.

I think the reason why she hates Meg is because Meg is the results of an affair she had with a guy named Stan. Peter knows that Meg isn't his real daughter. Lois wishes that Meg will unalive herself so that way the affair that she had will be forever gone. Lois is trying to get Meg to do it by bullying her and making her life a living hell.
You're right about Peter being an okay dad to Meg when Lois isn't around. I've seen episodes where he does try to be a good dad to Meg. When Meg was getting bullied at school in the mid-early episodes, he did almost killed Meg's bully because Meg told him about it. When Meg was tricked into having sex with a celebrity on live TV, Peter attacked the host celebrity but didn't know that the celebrity was the one who tricked Meg into having sex with him. Peter even forced a med doctor into marrying Meg when she thought she was pregnant, but it was her period being late.

I'm not sure that Meg is the product of an affair, she could likely just be the child of a previous relationship. Remember, Lois lived a pretty wild life before marrying Peter, including having a drug addiction and doing porn. When she became pregnant, Peter, realizing that Lois is way out of his league, uses the pregnancy to reverse baby trap her into marriage. Unfortunately, Peter resents Meg for not being his child, and Lois resents Meg because she married Peter to give her a father, but misses the rich girl, party lifestyle she used to enjoy.

Marge Simpson remains to be one of the best animated female characters ever.
Her and Homer's marriage isn't perfect; but you can tell they love each other, and would move Heaven and Earth for one another.
There have been so many times their marriage has come close to breaking point, but the two of them are in tears begging for forgiveness. One of the best Episodes ever (if I could remember it's name) is when Homer is photographed dancing with a Stripper; and publicly apologizes to the entire auditorium with Marge there just to prove how sorry he is. It's absolutely soul crushing. For as flawed as the newer seasons are, the Simpsons Marriage is incredible.
Lois and Peter? Yeah, no. Sure, Peter is a total dumbass but the way Lois is written makes you think he's one of the most evil people on Earth. I'm not overly fond of abusive male characters in anything, and the same goes for females.

I'm going to be honest, I've come to really sympathize with Meg over the years as I realize that I have a mother similar to Lois (manipulative, uncaring, sociopathic, incapable of accepting personal faults, abusive, alcoholic, cheating, greedy, etc.) Thinking about it, I guess it's lead to me seeing Family Guy as a more _"realistic"_ depiction of familial relationships as opposed to the Simpsions which seems like an idealized, unattainable fantasy.
'Course that's my own life experience painting that view, and it's not the same for everyone, but I suppose I appreciate the depiction of parents who are out and out horrible pieces of shit that treat their children and everyone around them like garbage, because that's what has defined the word "parents" to me and many other people. Sometimes, your mother is a garbage human who squanders every single chance they get to be better, and they don't deserve a shred of care, love, nor empathy from their children. _That_ is what Lois represents.
*Edit: Actually, on further reflection, my mother is _extremely_ similar to Lois, down to the fake posturing to convince other people that she's a good person.

I think one of the reasons Lois abuses Meg so much is because, she blames Meg, or rather her birth, for why she is ‘stuck’ with Peter. There was even an episode where Lois immediately regretted marrying Peter, but she was already pregnant with Meg, so she felt like she couldn’t back out of her doomed marriage.
Sadly, some families in real life have this, where a parent hates or heavily resents the 1st born child more than the other children, because they would rather blame a child rather than themselves for why their marriage is awful.

My honest views on Lois are a toss-up at this point.
On one hand, I miss her in the earlier seasons when she was always a great wife and even better mother. She would help prop up the family whenever they were down or in trouble and has proven to be both patient and intelligent. On the other hand, her antics in the later seasons make her a little bit crazy and obsessive, but it also proves that she's a human who makes human mistakes. Lois' recent episodes show that she's definitely not perfect, which is good and realistic if you can see your own limits.

There is literally no excuse for her. This is not "Human mistakes" A mistake would be accidentally hurting your family in some way with an innocently intended act or statement but she does this intentionally.

I think Lois enjoys playing the martyr. That's the only reason she hasn't left Peter; if she leaves this awful marriage, she wouldn't be able to whine and complain, and thus garner anything from sympathy for her endless suffering to admiration over what a saint she must be to still be with a buffoon like Peter. Lois is from a rich family, so money is no issue, and she doesn't give a rat's tail about her kids, meaning they aren't an obstacle, either. Honestly, it's looking more and more like Lois is essentially playing house, with Peter as her charity case and all three kids being accidents.
Actually, I wonder if they'd actually do that for like, the finale or something; it'd be the best twist ever. All three Griffin kids learn that they're just unwanted side-effects of the game their mother's been playing with some hapless moron for decades. Meg is hated for being the firstborn and thus the reason Lois couldn't just dip out anytime she wanted, thus ruining her fun because now she has actual responsibility. Chris is an affair baby (explaining his randomly blond hair) who is treated a little better because Lois wanted to see how long it would take Peter to notice Chris wasn't his, which he has yet to do and this amuses Lois. Stewie's former drive to kill Lois was an instinct that she wasn't right in the head, which only faded because he grew used to the feeling until it went away.

Brian and Lois who were once they best characters, are now easily the worst!!! Sad to see, but that’s modern Family Guy for you.

I still think when she bought that can of Whoopass as seen in a cutaway, she did it on purpose, knowing Peter will open it.
    Also, there was a sale.

Pretty much as any character in FG, she got flanderized. Can never get into the show since then.
Say what you will about Marge Simpson, but she as always been a consistently caring mother.

I never realized until watching your videos how after a certain episode of Family guy you will see how the character (For example Lois, Brian, and Stewie) slowly change. You dont really think about it until you go back or someone points it out.

Lois is probably my most hated character on the the show aside from Bryan. She kinda became more annoying over the years and now looking back I really sympathize for Meg more so that she became my favorite character on the show.

I think Lois is sad with her life and chooses to go after her family because they drive her insane. But I think she’s the worst to Meg because: A: Meg make her feel insecure, B: Meg is the easiest to push around. Honestly she should get her kids taken away from her

Remember when Lois kidnapped a kid because his parents didnt vaccinate him, and then she didn't want want her own child to be vaccinated in an other episode. She is a hypocrite.

People love to hate "old" family guy because it's dated now, but I like them because they're the FEW times Lois actually was a mother. By season 4, she was a parody of a parody of what she once was.

  • @Sly88Frye
    @Sly88Frye 2 года назад +3

I didn't think about that. You're right. She was rather forgetable in the first two seasons. Perhaps seasons 3 and 4 were her best. Maybe some seasons later as well.

I actually like the development of Lois, you see how the family dynamic is ever changing how the family view each other, kinda like reality . Also I feel they had to make Lois more outrageous because of how outrageous the family itself is , I mean a evil baby and a level 4 adult husband would make any nice person crazy lol, and I think because she is starting to dislike her life she develops a addictive personality either things she takes interest with

Lois was on a decline ever since Meg made her cry, only reason she went back to assaulting Meg was because Meg made it so(also when she was trying to become customer of the week, does anyone know the song that played)

Something that makes me laugh is in season 4 when Brian becomes a taxi driver. Peter takes a rude with him and Lois is in front of them; Peter just starts shooting the wheels out on louis’ car and says “but I got you right” and then lois says “yeah you got me 🤣” Peter and Lois just start belly laughing at the violence. This is what made Lois such a funny character to me 🤣
