'Lost in Space' is the episode that took me from a being a very casual fan to realizing just what American Dad was capable of. Something like the ending of 'Gold Top Nuts' continues to prove that.
I think but am not certain that that was a Discworld reference. Rincewind's father AND mother ran away before he was born (much to Ridcully's confusion).
Any episode with Jeff even before he was sent to space was always a highlight for me. Something about him just made the show more interesting. He was never the funniest character but just something about him brought out some of the best moments in others. Then once he got sent to space he proved he can hold an episode as the main character, and honestly I'm just impressed at how well they've used Jeff. Most shows would have treated him as what his role was initially. American Dad did something special with Jeff and I think other shows like it can learn from that. While the status quo has to be reset for the main cast, do something with your secondary characters and it'll allow for creative ideas that save you from seasonal rot. Stuff like this is what has kept American Dad from becoming a husk of it's former self.
This arc also did a lot to transform the nature of how the audience viewed him and his relationship with Hailey. Hailey loving Jeff since his inception was always this "get a rise out of Stan" and "make a potential mistake with him" kind of deal. Usually, Stan had to accept Hailey loved Jeff or that it was her mistake to make, or Jeff had to try to prove himself worthy of Hailey. From being married to Hailey and moving into the house, these plot lines were beginning to dry up. It was getting to the point where either they reinvent the character or write him out like they did Jillian on Family Guy. (Jillian does still appear sometimes, but her relevance is long over.) So they decide to instead test the waters and do the one thing they can't go back on with him, tell him Roger's secret. They write Jeff out for a while and send him into space. This opens a lot of new possibilities for Hailey grieving Jeff's loss and focus exclusively on her feelings for Jeff. What this did is strengthen their relationship, and show Hailey truly loves Jeff. He wasn't some jab at Stan or her seeking out a mistake. Hailey was willing to wait her entire life for him. On top of proving he can hold his own in storylines that weren't about Hailey disappointing Stan, it reinvented his image in terms of his relationship with Hailey and the family. While by marriage he had been, by the end of this arc he was officially a Smith. He was a member of the family, not just Hailey's husband.
I didn't follow this story but Jeff telling her to move on is heart breaking and the best adult cartoon example of true love. I would've balled my eyes out if I watched that episode normally. I always knew that American Dad was considered the best Seth Rogen show and understood why, but this really takes it home for me.
Once again another great American Dad video. Jeff is just honestly the best "stoner" tv character because hes more than just a one note joke. Also the actual Jeff Fischer pops into the subreddit from time to time & answers all kinds on questions & theorys. Dude is hilarious & a really chill guy. Its no wonder his tv character is literally just him 😂
Yes, you absolutely should make an hour long (or longer) video for each character in American Dad. This platform is devoid of good AD content, and your channel is a bright becon in the darkness. Keep up the great work. I have no specific comment I want to make about the video's content. You covered everything well, I very much enjoy Jeff as a character and I love his arc, and I very much enjoyed this video.
25:11 The fact that Jeff need to take a breath here has always been to me him trying to not cry while telling the one person he loves most that he will never be able to see her again, and to live her life without him in it. When i saw this episode i actually cried for Jeff because thinking about yourself in that scenario is...terrifying
Jeff is my favorite character. I’ve been rewatching the series, so I’m glad to see some videos on American Dad. There are so many videos you could make from this show. Like the Turd Saga, I love when the show pauses to unrelated storylines that are great on their own. Like the squirrels living in Steve’s treehouse, the rabbit and the frog, and the bird couple killed by a shoddy birdhouse. A video focusing on those side stories would be interesting.
Totally unrelated to the video, but I just gotta say, love your presentation and editing. I know as the channel grows it'll inevitably evolve, but as of now it already hits perfectly for me. Props to the artists involved as well! As for the video, I've always had a soft spot for Jeff; of all things, I actually connect with him on the "mom abandoned him before he was born", ridiculous as that sounds 😂
Two things, I think Jeff in Space could hace been an excellent spin-off even if it was a mini-series, and second, I have a conspiracy theory that the AD episodes are in "disorder" and one can judge the order by seeing how Francine treats Claus and how Roger treats the family.
I have never seen or understood American Dad before and only clicked for the evangelion meme, but I'm glad I did because the background music is the most based selection I've ever seen. Quality is great too, you deserve more subs.
In the Episode where Roger pushes Jeff into the Alien ship, I always wonder why Stan did not take Jeff to the CIA to have his memory erased, perhaps that would have been boring.
Jeff is like butters from South Park who started out as nearly background characters only to evolve into the most important characters in the show and both are innocent characters with bad dads. I loved the world building and emotion the Jeff in space arc gave. Especially all the cool new alien species in the shopping mall which I still wanna know more about. Funny story my uncle thought I was watching Rick and Morty when watching the lost in space episode
And I enjoy South Park just as much as American Dad. Both these shows and Futurama are often being crapped on most days. I like how their characters have grown over time.
Yes! I'm glad someone mentioned it. It just felt like a true WTF moment, especially for the character since the opposite happened to him and he's pretty close with his mom. Maybe too close
Lost In Space was such a good episode, that ties into the main series but stands out as its own thing. You could show it to someone who's never seen the show and it'd still work. And even though it's primarily comedic, for a McFarlane project, it's surprisingly heartfelt and the worldbuilding is fun to watch. Also I love the Wax Fang song.
You forgot the biggest thing about all of this. Everything that happens in American Dad is all in Stan’s personal heaven after he died post rapture. The real Jeff is either raptured or dead
I think Jeff was the best thing to happen to the Smith family. After Hayley married him they became a lot closer as a family, with Jeff serving a punching bag and support for any of them.

It seems that Roger is able to do more than just disguise himself. he takes on the traits of whomever or whatever he disguises himself as. When he disguises as a female, he's able to make love to people as a female and vice versa, but i dunno, maybe that's just his alien physiology. We never see his genitals, maybe it's just an orifice that open up on his body or a orehensile limb that can fashion itself into whatever tool is needed at the moment, or maybe he just has a cloaca or something. his personas are not just limited to human disguises. He wore a cat costume and became able to lick himself clean like a cat. he wore a greyhound costume and was able to run on all fours, faster than the other greyhounds. He wore a shark costume and was able to bite Steve's arm off..
