    As a revolver fan, I am frequently asked what I think the best revolver is. Whether it is for concealed carry or self defense, people want to know my top revolvers. Well, after years of shooting Smith and Wesson Performance Center, Ruger, Colt, and Kimber... This Spohr is truly one of the best magnum revolvers out there! This Spohr revolver made in Germany is chambered in .357 Magnum and it built to extremely high quality control standards and is all forged: no MIM parts. (I even tested a 9mm cylinder, which is an amazing option! I quality revolver chambered in 9mm? Yes please!) When it comes to quality revolvers, the Spohr is better than all of those (yes even the 686 +, Python, King Cobra, and GP100) and at its price point it should be! But in this honest review I will go over what problems or issues I experienced as well as how it stacks up to a premium brand like Korth. So enjoy this full review of the Sphor 283 Carry revolver newly imported from Germany to the U.S. courtesy of Nightwood Guns!

    For those who are willing to spend the money for best quality firearms, we are living in an age of fantastic revolvers. Korth, Manurhin MR73, or SPOHR, pick your favorite and buy a gun to own and shoot for life and then pass it down to your child. I went with the MR73, but at these quality levels, it boils down to personal taste.

    • @NightwoodGuns
      @NightwoodGuns  4 месяца назад +3

      You hit the nail on the head! How’s your MR73 holding up? I’ve heard less than stellar things about the Beretta imported Manurhins.

    • @brianmoore1164
      @brianmoore1164 4 месяца назад +12

      @NightwoodGuns I have a little over a thousand rounds through it so far and it has been perfect. 80% of shooting has been 357 magnum and 20% 38spl. I further split the shooting up 70% double action and 30% single action. I think the "new ones aren't as good " arguments have been made by people who own old ones and don't want their resale value to decrease. In every comparison I can make to my 1965 Colt Python, the MR73 is better. Okay, so I would probably give the nod to the Python for looks. 😉

    I own one .38 and two .357’s. The .38 is a 1975 S&W 10-5 snub and one of my .357’s is a 1985 S&W 66-2 snub. The other .357 is a Ruger 1990 Blackhawk. All are quality made and function flawlessly.

    I was looking forward to this review! You did a great job pointing out small details that make a big difference like the sharp edges and holster fit. The ability to shoot .357, .38, and 9mm makes this a really versatile gun.
    I didn't realize this will be cheaper than Korth; that does make it more appealing. I think the rail on the barrel is a poor choice: it's probably too short to mount anything onto it, mounting a big, pic rail sized dot seems antithetical to a carry revolver anyway, it looks bad, and it interferes with holsters.

    I hear the same thing is happening with US automakers; in the last few years quality has plummeted. It's like they know the end is coming so they're squeezing value out of their brands while they can.

      When the value of the US currency is plummeting a lot faster than factories and supply chains can re-configure, manufacturers stand to lose money. The problem isn't corporate greed in this space, the problem is:
      Congress wants money.
      Fed lends currency to the US treasury, WITH INTEREST
      Treasury prints and prints and prints and prints and prints
      Congress gets the cash, spends it on bureaucratic crap, launders the rest around the world
      Congress hands the debt over to the taxpayers and wealth-generators.
      Repeat repeat repeat.
      The USA doesn't have its own currency, believe it or not. Every dollar is borrowed from the Fed with interest owed. This is the reason for the dying towns, dying factories, dying workforce, inability to pay for anything these days. Inflation is theft by borrowing currency.
      Oh, and the Fed is NOT elected, is not Federal (of the people), and has no oversight.

    You're exactly right on QC nowadays. I turned down S&W as my carry option because of the horror stories I've been hearing lately from S&W QC. But even still, I got a 3" Colt Python as my CCW and I love it. However once again QC comes into play because first thing you have to do after dropping $1500 on a Python is go spend another $100 on a Wilson Combat sight to fix their issues too. QC issues are running rampant in everything it seems.

  • @thebenior

    Brett, S&W has been using soft metal parts for internals for over 60 years. They switched from forged bits in the 1950s, replacing them with parts that were punched out of relatively soft flat stock, machined, then case hardened. Only a thin surface layer was hardened; the rest remained soft metal. Tolerances with the punched flat stock parts were less repeatable than MIM. If a gunsmith had to fit a part, that reduced the thickness of the case hardening; subsequently reducing the lifespan of the part. The current MIM parts aren't through hardened, but they are harder than those old punched parts were. Forging isn't the be all, end all either. A retired police armorer told me that the Colts had more issues with broken hammer spurs than the S&Ws did.
    The pinned barrels were better in most ways than the crush fit barrels. Canted barrels weren't a thing, and cylinder gaps were more repeatable. The crush fit barrels also impart more force to the frame when they're installed. The barrel pins could, however, walk in some circumstances.
    I've looked at a couple of pinned barrel S&Ws recently. One is a 10-6 that's a retired service weapon. Plenty of holster wear, but a super clean bore. However, the sear on the hammer is weirdly worn out of spec. The SA trigger is great, but something was clearly wrong with the DA pull. It could be a case where the officer who carried it dry fired it like a maniac but barely shot it outside of his annual qualification (those two things tend to be at odds with each other), or it could be that sear just wasn't that well made from the factory. The other is a narrow front sight, Model 60 no dash. The frame on that one came out less than ideal when initially manufactured; I can see where a gunsmith had to file away some material on the frame by the back of the cylinder, and the part of the frame where the yoke closes. It's very obvious, as the affect areas got minimal (if any) polishing afterwards.

    • @thebenior
      @thebenior 7 дней назад

      @@BezmenovDisciple Not really. Things were still made to less repeatable tolerances and stress relieving methods weren't as good back then. Speculating, but S&W may have also done better QC with more expensive revolvers like Registered Magnums/Model 27s than M&Ps made in much larger quantities.

    Speaking of Smith and Wesson, I was a huge SW fan but I think I'm done with them. I purchased a brand-new S&W firearm recently that they were touting a rebate for. The website showed a rebate for that model and my local store had a card showing the model was eligible for the rebate. I filled out the rebate form, attached my pictures, made sure the model was covered as listed in their rebate legal document and S&W's response was that my rebate was denied as "it was not a valid serial number for the rebate." I have gone back and forth with their rebate department (which has no control over anything, they literally just forward reports to S&W) and my model's UPC/SKU are covered by the rebate but S&W has decided my serial number just isn't eligible. It's incredibly crazy, they don't even list elligble serial numbers only SKUS/UPCs which mine is listed! I told them I was pretty sure that was illegal, their rebate department won't put me in touch with anyone, they are only forwarding my comments to some nebulous group for another round of review. If they aren't putting that stupid lock on their firearms they are totally changing the classic line's fabrication methods and refusing to honor their rebate terms. I'm so mad that if they give me another run around I'm selling all my SW products, filing a grievance with the BBB, and I will never recommend another SW product ever. I own a 686+, MP 5.7, K22 and that's just the start, what buffoons to throw away the goodwill of their fans over a cheap rebate!
    Noone wants to buy American any more because of this race to the bottom so companies can milk their customers rather than provide good products and service.

    My next order is 99% sure to be one of the upcoming spohr .44 magnums, with DLC coating and hopefully a secondary cylinder in .44 russian (for target loads, since it's extremely similar to .45 ACP bullseye loads, even has pmuch identical case volume)
    i already have a korth (1981-ish ratzeburg sport model) and a manurhin MR-73 (currently got 6000 rounds on mine, had it since last summer), but i might just sell the korth since the double action just isn't my thing

The GP100 is built like a brick shithouse and is known to withstand these Olde .357 Magnum loads from a bygone era, when men ate red meat and it was widely reguarded as near impossible to load .357 "too hot." Great video! You answered all the questions. The trigger didn't sound that great though & the price sounds out of sight.
    Plus, the handle is wood? Sounds a bit hard for 357 but you said something about the recoil not being that bad? How does the gun reduce the recoil, especially on a 3"?
    What is the rail on top for? Any thing you would put on top would block your sights unless you can put a red dot or something like that on it?
    Looks very bulky. Definitely a man's gun or outdoor gun can't see a woman using this cc.
    I like the S&W ported 3" 357 but yeah heard there's alot of send backs. What a shame! They used to be the go to pretty much.

    • @NightwoodGuns
      @NightwoodGuns  4 месяца назад +1

      You are right about this being more outdoor or “manly man” oriented for carry 😅 The weight of the gun and the ergonomics of the grip make it easy to shoot even with the 3” barrel. And yes, a dot would go on the top rail but obviously it would be quite cumbersome. They don’t have any less bulky options yet, but I have a feeling they are just getting started. I am not saying you should not pay 1,300 or 2,000 or even 10,000 dollars on a revolver. But you do not have to. Excellent reliable wheel guns can be had for as little as 500. Less if you find a decent used gun. Maybe this gun can fire fifteen thousand rounds after being run over by a Humvee. That is not required of most guns. If you have the money, buy what you want, but if your criteria is a solid reliable gun, you could have that for much less.

      Thanks for your answer. I like OWB holsters, although open carry is ilegal in my country. We can legally open carry only at the shooting range. We can use OWB holsters, but the gun must be cover by clothing. This is quite difficult with a long barreled gun. So a snub-nose revolver is perfect. In a leather holster that folds better on the belt, it is quite easy to cover the gun with a shirt or a jacket.
