I’ve shot the 1851 Richard-Mason conversions for years. That’s my favorite revolver for the sport of Cowboy Action Shooting. By the way, that open shot, off-hand, with that revolver was pretty darn impressive!

Great video. The Texas Ranger museum in San Antonio has a vintage photo of two cowboys packing Colt Open Tops. I had the Uberti replica and it was a tack driver.
It was chambered in 44 Henry and i believe the first gun to use an existing cartridge instead of inventing a new one for it. Great video!!! Thanks for posting!!!

I love this episode Santee. I love my 1872 Open Top. It's in 38 Special. I'd love one in 44-40, but I can't find one. I really like the uniqueness of these revolvers. Like the Red Headed Step Child they are, they are great shooters. I take mine out with a few conversion cylinder revolvers that I have. Thanks for all the great info too.
Nice synopsis of the metallic cartridge evolution. Smith & Wesson’s licensing of the Rollin White through bore patent was a huge leap forward for S&W. Colt had to rely on conversions until the patent ran out.

I still like the paper cartridge with a top strap. You can load heavy if you wanted to, but I normally load standard. But I do like the idea of stripping the grips and putting a walnut stain and Lynn seed oil. It gives it more of an old look.

My first cartridge Old West gun is a Uberti 1872 open top. Charcoal blue barrel, cylinder and grip frame. She's a beautiful thing, haven't had a chance to shoot it yet.
I bought an open top revolver chambered in 38 caliber about 5 months ago at a gun show and I love it, it’s made by Taylor and Company and the action on the gun is so smooth. Now I just need to find a good pistol belt for it.
I have an Open Top! One of these days I'm actually going to take it out to the range and see how it shoots! I probably won't be doing any 350yd shots though! NICE!!!

Open tops just have more character because they have an even longer story than the famous 1873 Single Action. I like the latter, but I always turn more to my open tops when I’m in a 19th Century mood. Awesome scene with an open top conversion was Tom Cruise in a shoulder holster in The Last Samuri when he demonstrates that the trainee Japanese army “is not ready”

Now that I am moving to Mohave Valley Arizona from California, I've offloaded a few rifles in trade for lighter pistols, one of which is an Interarms Virginian Dragoon 44 Mag. May have to bring it by for y'all to gander at

I got a lot more inspiration for my old west frontier, and zelda inspired re-written and re-edited new writing projects. Great job,well done and keep up the great work. The interconnected narrative lore based story Im working on writing today starts of with some of my characters playing a RomFile-FlashCart on a console known as The MagnaVox XPlay GameStation PCVideo-FlashSystem Mobile on a old flatscreen television within a room of a building, that I havent named yet. In the story, the console isvpart of a line of devices called TimeTraversal-Tech and is made out of ancient mineral stones known as Luminance TechStones and Luminance TimeStones.

I saw an old publicity pic of Little Joe from Bonanza with an open top. Also don't forget the open tops in Outlaw Josie Wales and the Good the Bad and the Ugly. (Historically inaccurate, I konow.) A very heavily aged open top, in hands of character in the Quick and the Dead (interesting gun shop scene there).
@@ArizonaGhostriders A question always comes up with TV & movies of that era: Were those actual original R-M conversions, were they original Colts converted by prop houses, or were the reproductions, that were starting to enter gun markets? Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Val Fogett, involved w/ Navy Arms Co., originally have reproductions made in Belgium, later in Italy that entered US gun market late 1950's. Old timers split on this some saying gun magazines discussed movie guns originals were used since still affordably available, while other claim the entry of reproductions provided modern materieled bases for these props. Truth is probably a combination of all three, but just curious trivia. And speaking of trivia: Did you know that on The Rifleman 3 different rifles used (common in film & TV to have so production doesn't stop if gun breaks just use one of the back ups). Two were actual M92 Winchesters, but third was a Spanish copy made in qualtities called El Tigre, surplused and imported in 1950's. The El Tigre has a slightly different front site that sharp eyed viewer can look for.
@@doraran2138 Stembridge Arms was a major outfitter for Hollywood at that time. They acquired the real pieces and no doubt fabricated some as well. There were also the Thuer conversions out there. I'm pretty sure Uberti didn't produce the covnersions back in the day. I hope those actors realized they were shooting some great historical pieces.
Ok, let's see if I can sort this out ...... We've got Dirty Dan and now you have added Dead Eye Dan. If those two were to team up, we would have Dirty Dead Eye Dan 🤔 I can see this quickly devolving into something simply similar to Stink Eye Dan 😵💫 Much like you & Garret, that '71/'72 Open Top is my favorite. I went for the Hollywood Series version in hopes that I could get 15-20 shots before reloading (Open Range) but was sadly mistaken 🤨
After the Civil War gunsmiths stared to convert cap&ball revolvers to cartridges and Colt decided that if some tinker on the frontier could do it so could they.
Do you use a Cowboy Action load or will it also fire a full power .45 Colt load that can be fired in the Ruger Vaquero? I ask because I like these Old West revolvers and would like to have one someday when I get too old to rack a slide. Since I have a Vaquero in .45 Colt I don’t see a need to get another calibre.
@@ArizonaGhostriders Thanks. I was curious if they could handle a standard load. My Vaquero has a color case hardened frame and a sturdy cylinder so it handles standard .45. I wouldn’t think about using anything hotter.

Those were Richard-Mason conversions (before the Open Top).
@@ArizonaGhostriders A question always comes up with TV & movies of that era: Were those actual original R-M conversions, were they original Colts converted by prop houses, or were the reproductions, that were starting to enter gun markets? Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Val Fogett, involved w/ Navy Arms Co., originally have reproductions made in Belgium, later in Italy that entered US gun market late 1950's. Old timers split on this some saying gun magazines discussed movie guns originals were used since still affordably available, while other claim the entry of reproductions provided modern materieled bases for these props. Truth is probably a combination of all three, but just curious trivia. And speaking of trivia: Did you know that on The Rifleman 3 different rifles used (common in film & TV to have so production doesn't stop if gun breaks just use one of the back ups). Two were actual M92 Winchesters, but third was a Spanish copy made in qualtities called El Tigre, surplused and imported in 1950's. The El Tigre has a slightly different front site that sharp eyed viewer can look for.
@@doraran2138 Stembridge Arms was a major outfitter for Hollywood at that time. They acquired the real pieces and no doubt fabricated some as well. There were also the Thuer conversions out there. I'm pretty sure Uberti didn't produce the covnersions back in the day. I hope those actors realized they were shooting some great historical pieces.

Much like you & Garret, that '71/'72 Open Top is my favorite. I went for the Hollywood Series version in hopes that I could get 15-20 shots before reloading (Open Range) but was sadly mistaken 🤨

After the Civil War gunsmiths stared to convert cap&ball revolvers to cartridges and Colt decided that if some tinker on the frontier could do it so could they.
Some did in the states for sure. With the Theur Conversions over in Europe, it appeared Colt did all of those.
Do you use a Cowboy Action load or will it also fire a full power .45 Colt load that can be fired in the Ruger Vaquero? I ask because I like these Old West revolvers and would like to have one someday when I get too old to rack a slide. Since I have a Vaquero in .45 Colt I don’t see a need to get another calibre.
I use a cowboy load, but there are a lot out there. Like the repros, the New Vaquero should not shoot overly "hot" loads.
@@ArizonaGhostriders Thanks. I was curious if they could handle a standard load. My Vaquero has a color case hardened frame and a sturdy cylinder so it handles standard .45. I wouldn’t think about using anything hotter.
