First thing to do: DARK MODE!!!!!
I prefer auto theme
its not even true dark mode, its grey mode
Auto
yessss
NonsensicalVids It is dark it’s just not black. Gray has different shades idiot.
Enabling Three-Finger Dragging. I can't live without that feature. It's buried deep inside the accessibilities section.
Preach 😇
What’s the benefit of it
My goodness you sir are right
Youssouf da Silva thanks I’ll turn it on when I get my pro next week
where do you activate it exactly?
Most overlooked in my opinion is turning on hot corners and adding mission control (system preferences > desktop and screensaver). Then you can add multiple desktops at the top of the window as if you had additional monitors. You can then 3 finger swipe back and forth between them.... Keeps me from having to minimize every screen when I need to find a particular window.
These are the first things I set up also.
Amazing, I just bought my 2021 MacBook Pro and am currently setting it up as I type this reply. Thanks dude!
You can also use CMD-Tab to switch between apps
hot corners for sure, tpL desktop, btL display to sleep, tpR launch pad. btR Mission Control. Dark mode, 3 finger drag, reverse scroll, turn on scroll lines always, shut off the auto sync for doc n desktop, I do not like stacks can not get use to it, mine seems more messed up, if I stack my desk top I can't find crap.
One of the first things I install on a clean Mac install is Magnet. Snapping windows is part of my everyday workflow. I cannot live without it.
I've tried it because I hear its great, but just couldn't make it part of my workflow
Tyler Stalman also if you don’t wanna pay there are free alternatives like spectacle or Tiles app
It’s not as robust, but this functionality is built into Catalina now by default. Drag to left or right side will split the app to half the window. Drag to top will full screen it
Rectangle is another option
Mac OS is nice apart from this dumb Finder..
An area where Windows Explorer is so much more powerful and clever
Bettersnaptool, dark mode, all the trackpad options, including 3 finger drag, which is now in accessibility
Thanks for the tip on 3 finger drag! Activated and now part of my flow. Appreciate it.
Cole Mowery that’s the thing which is known to old mac users only. Hello brother.
I turned off basically all of the trackpad options except for 3 finger drag. It’s better to set up hot corners.
Some of the best content on this topic; excellent production quality, time-efficient (no waffling) and highly relevant to the description. Liked & Subbed!
I get to go pick up my Mac from the Apple store in a few hours so I’m watching all sorts of these videos and this is a good one! Thanks
Great list! I love starting fresh. When I setup a new computer I rarely add everything I had on the old computer. I only add or install it when I actually need it. That way I don't bog it up! One thing I always add immediately is Size Up.
2 things are a must for me:
a) Dark Mode
b) Use 3 fingers to drag (can be changed in accessibility) It basically replaces all 3 finger gestures with 4 fingers but let’s you drag without clicking which I find really convenient.
Thanks man
three fingers to drag sounds like a game changer!
I always enable drag with three fingers on the trackpad. It used to be in the Trackpad Settings but a few years ago it switched to the Accessibility Settings. It's so much more convenient to move windows and other things around with three fingers on the trackpad than clicking with one finger and dragging with another finger.
This video was a HUGE help as I set up my new MacBook Pro! So many details I didn’t consider on previous Apple products that will make my user experience easier and more enjoyable. THANK YOU for taking the time to organize all this!
THIS WAS SO USEFUL! I learned a lot and I've been using mac since 2015 lol
Just bought a new Macbook Pro two days ago. This is extremely useful, thanks!
Lucky how is it now
Just got a new 16" Macbook Pro yesterday after using a 2011 Mac Mini for the past decade!! This video has been super helpful and I can't believe it was actually uploaded today!! THANK YOU!!
This is a great video. Just updated my 2013 MacBook Pro to the new MacBook Pro 16 today. I usually do a lot of things showed in this video, but a few tips were unknown to me. Thanks 🙏.
My 16 inch MacBook arrived today, and you just had to make this video! Thank you!
Just Rocco Same 🙏
I switched my MacBook 2012 with it and it‘s really a good piece of hardware.
when did you order? mines taking forever!
@@martykimp7751 4 days before I got it. I do live in the UK and the eta is 3-4 days.
Ive got mine like 4 days ago lol
Stacks was a revelation to me! Thank you!
Thanks for that. Picked up a couple useful tips there. Myself I definitely always turn in the 3 finger window drag option.
First thing’s first: the wallpaper ☝🏽
Nah dark mode
Just bought my first Mac, Ive had PC my entire life and this video is helping me a lot.
Tell me about your experience with mac.. Do you prefer it above windows ?
@@iMaram. yes. Specially cuz I have other apple products and they work perfectly together. So much easier, so much portable. I don’t think I’m going back to PC.
I like to turn on the option that shows file extensions in Finder. Magnification for the dock is crucial, can't work without it.
I'm a mac user for only 4 years, I was on widows before, and today I listen to your video and I found sum pretty cool goodies. Thanks for that!
More of these videos Tyler. These are awesome. Just cleaned up my Mac and looks so much better.
I always set up my dock with folders! Learned that a long time ago and It is just how Im used to it now. Especially drag the applications folder to the dock, make sure to use list as the setting. Easy access to all applications!
Im big into folder management, making hierarchies in the file system. I like to keep things organised and never got into the habit of searching for stuff… Even though it might be quicker I feel more in control when I have stuff visually organised.
Putting folders in the dock might also be a good tip for recent windows converts since it resembles the windows start menu (or what its called).
Great tip for dj’s! I’m always making playlists and it’s so much easier to browse my songs when my music folders are in the dock separated by genre
Tyler, thank you, thank you-for this helpful video. Priceless stuff! 💛😎
Setapp is amazing. Paste is a personal favourite. Couldn’t live without it!
...your video setup is flawless. Best video quality I’ve seen on RUclips. Had to revamp my entire setup after seeing this.🤘📸👌
Alfred, it’s a beefed up spotlight and you can have a lot of custom actions setup there. Dropbox for my cloud storage. For web development Atom (been buggy lately, might swing to VS Code), Local (Wordpress dev environment), and iTerm2 which i customize and theme put with Oh My Zsh. I do all my writing as Markdown files, and I use Typora for that.
This video was really helpful. plus, I must say that your video quality and the overall presentation made this video 10 times beautiful. Subscribed.
This was great Tyler, thanks for putting this all together. I get my new MacBook Pro today and will definitely be using these tips 👍🏻
I have used Mac for years and most of these tips were new to me and very useful. Thanks!
About to get my first Mac so this was really helpful!
Right off the bat first thing in this video - the behavior you’re describing of macos intelligently moving files to the cloud is a SEPARATE setting that can be independently toggled off in the iCloud Drive settings without disabling the document sync feature. So if that’s bugging you just switch off optimize storage and keep it syncing! It’s super useful!
Exactly! I love iCloud Drive and use it instead of Dropbox now.
writing this on my new MacBook Pro 16 inch and I am so pumped! Thank you for helping set this up.
Lots of info very quickly. Thanks for valuing my time. Already changed some settings on my MacBook Pro based on your recommendations.
It's not just tap to click that is essential for an awesome experience with simple dragging... You also have to go into Accessibility and check off these two things (it's night and day with dragging and making the trackpad super awesome). Check Enable Dragging "without drag lock" and also choose Scrolling "with inertia" under Accessibility. These things make a world of difference and I'm not sure why they are buried in Accessibility. It makes dragging windows effortlessly and pleasant. I can't stand it any other way.
This literally just saved my life. lmao I can highlight without clicking and using two hands!
thanks for pointing this out, it helps me as ex-windows user
@@oxidstudios
Sorry, a correction, check Enable Dragging "with Drag lock".
Sorry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would advise against this if you use tap to click, because it introduces a very noticeable delay to the click. Your MacBook waits for a split-second to see if you'll tap again, thus delaying the click. Instead you could use three finger dragging which doesn't have the same issue.
Yes, exactly! I'm always using a trackpad and I do this on all my macs.
Great tips!
Very helpful tips, even for someone who has owned their Mac for about a year. Thank you!
Thank you for the scroll bar tip. I've just updated from my 2011 Macbook Pro (so used to a very old Mac!) and the missing scrollbars were driving me nuts! And the trackpad click tip - also so useful!
One of the first things I change is adding 3 finger drag in the accessibility options. I also move all the apps that I don't use in launchpad into one folder :)
Shift is my first mac app install. I can have all my emails, Google apps, Dropbox, Slack and Trello all in one place without ever having to open up another app. It’s life changing.
Great tips, agree with all and thanks for the show scroll bars, didn’t know that one. Other things I change is mouse/trackpad speed to max and screen resolution to more space
Incredibly useful, thank you for making this video!
I just got my first MacBook Pro today! Thank you SO much for this!
Quarantine RUclips recommended this to me even though I’m using Asus, but now I’m saving for the new MacBook next year, and I’ll come back to watch this video once again.
Perfect time for my new Macbook Air. Thank you!
Just had to buy new Mac as my only computer bought since 2008, the first generation on Macbook Aluminium case with DVD-Writer! It's still running well.. let's see how long this Macbook Air will lasts..
Great video! Just bought a new mac and all set up.
That was a very useful video! I’ve just received my first ever Mac, the late 2020 MacBook Pro M1. It’s great! But I only now realise that I have to much to learn, having come from Windows. One of the first things I wanted to download was Final Cut Pro - until I saw the price tag!! I also couldn’t find Adobe Photoshop on the Mac AppStore which I thought was odd.
Just got my first mac. Did almost all of these within the first minutes. Then watched this video. ^^
One of the first things I enable is three finger drag to move windows with a trackpad. The three-finger drag option is hidden in System Preferences > Accessibility. Click the Trackpad Options button at the bottom of the Accessibility window on Pointer Control. In the pop-up window, check the box for Enable dragging and choose three finger drag from the pull-down menu.
This is really useful. I've pretty much done most of the tips you've suggested. I like iCloud desktop disabling and scrollbar and file paths .
Ask to keep changes when closing documents. It is in the same screen as the scroll bar settings.
Its crazy, you Mac is pretty much set up exactly like mines lol except for the dock placement, I put mines on the left
I don’t even use a Mac but always enjoy watching your videos man. Good stuff!
thank you for this video! just got my new 13 inch macbook with the touch bar and your tips are helping me set it up!
As a first-time Mac owner, THANK YOU so much for your tips! I've implemented most of your suggestions!
Thanks for this video! I want to acknowledge some people’s first Macs may not be from Apple and are purchased secondhand. I don’t recommend the first thing they do is download updates. Some older Macs-which will work great for some users-may have a recommendation to update to the next OS and the computer works better sticking with the previous. In those instances, it’s helpful to do a little internet research on what users are saying before updating.
can lose access to apps such as numbers updated and lost it from my 2012
The macOS app TextSniper has been added to my list of must-have apps. So far this is my top app of the year. Now I can instantly copy any text from my Mac's screen and it is super useful. I recommend to try it.
A very good video. Thanks for giving me ideas about the Dock. I have put it in Hide mode, but this was new to me, even though I have been using MacOS for years now.
Thanks Tyler, great tips. I have done 95% of your tips already and you gave me comfort of other like minded and organised mac users :-) One other thing I tend to do is set the views of all the folders on my drives (cloud & local). View > CMD+J > Always open in List View & Browse in list view, Arrange by : Modified, Sort by : Added, Then tick all the check boxes, Click Use as default. Reason i do this is that when you see your files, these are always shown by date accessed and you never loose the file and stop thinking "when did i make this file" or "Where did i store this file". :-)
New mac user here so.. thank you for the video! Also at 04:05, I see that you have CaptureOne, Luminar and other other non-adobe software. Can you made a video on what you would recommend from these? Thanks!
The exact video I was hoping to find thank you for creating this!
Just got my first Mac and this was SO useful. THANK YOU!
This is (a) gold and (b) perfect timing as I've just ordered a new MacBook Pro :-) Thanks Tyler!!
I have been using Windows since 3.1 for my work as a CPA, and I have decided to finally move entirely to the Apple ecosystem. I am finding the transition to be really stressful, because the Mac “desktop” experience has been utterly different....I have used my Windows desktop as a temporary holding place for decades, and I couldn’t figure the Mac out...until I realised from your video this morning the iCloud WAS the desktop......just want to say that you for your video Tyler, the young new world just assumes everyone understands how to drive these machines, and there are so many nuances to Apple that making the transition for a older professional guy like me is really nerve-racking trying to cover every issue which crops up in a professional’s filing system (and old habits)
Great info for a new Mac owner. I just got the $1800, 2020 "13 pro. I had the 2019 Pro for less than a week before the new one was announced, so I returned it and ordered the new one. For you Vets there is a 10% discount. I only paid $1619.00 for mine. After close to 30 years using a PC, its great finding these tips. They are really helpful.
This video gave A LOT more AMAZING info than I expected! Well-done, hooman!
Sitting here and watching videos of macbboks in anticipation of mine finally arriving. Thanks to Corona that´ll take a wile.
This is gonna sound so sad, but one of my childhood dreams was to own a mac! 12 years later and I have just bought one!!!! I am so exciteddddddddd
Great tips. Straight to the point, not same tips that are on every other video, no BS. Nice video! Thanks.
Getting my first and new 2020 mac air on wednesday. Your info is great.
One thing I like about macos is Hot Corners. The lower right corner reveals the desktop (Windows' only feature I really miss, hence the placement), the upper left activates Application Windows.
I used to LOVE hot corners before Control Center, now gestures have replaced it for me
Very useful trackpad feature: Three finger drag
Till Yosemite: preferences > trackpad
Sierra to mojave: preferences > accessibility > trackpad and mouse
Catalina: Preferences > accessibility > cursor options
Whoa. This will make my fingers feel a heck of a lot better.
Also:
Catalina: Preferences > Accessibility > Pounrer Control > Trackpad Options > Enable dragging > three finger drag
Folarin Osibodu Whats the benefit of 3 finger dragging
Super helpful video. Got my first macbook yesterday and it’s more different than windows than i thought.
Very helpful and quick to the points, thanks!
Drag with 3 fingers! Can’t live without it!! It is under the accessibility settings
Oh I thought that one was on by default. Very useful!
Tyler Stalman Resolve is shit. It crashed like 5 times when I tried to edit my latest video on my 13” 2018 MBP. Won’t recommend to anyone. And yes my machine doesn’t have descreate graphics but cmon FCP X would have been butter....it just costs a fortune.
@@stalman It used to be default. They moved it to accessibility a few OS's ago.
Literally the first thing I do after disabling iCloud sync is installing iTerm and homebrew :)
One thing I do beside (most) of these things you showed is activating right bottom hot corner for screen standby. I use this very often to turn off the screen with a swipe.
Just bought a Mac air. Looking to set it up in a convenient manner. This video is very helpful. Thank you
OMG...!!!!!!!!!!!! For years I've been wondering about how to permanently show the "slider bars", I've even call apple care about it... Thank you so much..!!!
first things first, speed up the trackpad/mouse
Yes please
oh god yes, like so fast and I am ENRAGED for the entire 30 seconds before I get it fixed
Definitely my friends say it’s too fast when they use my Mac !
Yesssssss pleeeeezzzeee😂👍
fukkkk yes and the keyboard repetition speed
Thanks guy, you help me so much. Some things is hard to understend for mac new user
I found this video immensely helpful right now. Thank you so much for making this video!
There's an app that increases my magic mouse sensitivity. The iMac screen is too big for the max sensitivity that apple has set. It also lets you make custom gestures for different apps (and custom universal gestures). Really can't remember what it's called (my iMac has been sent back as it was faulty)
Comments about safari were interesting, I might look into using it more often
Since I setup a "new Mac" every 7 to 8 years, I don't remember what I actually do.
Mine was 10 years ago. Learning
SAME! 😆
Haha! Same here! I'm receiving my new 16' macbook pro today!....time for a change after 8 years !
@@MB-pi3ep you should have waited for m1x macbook
@@ddc171 hm.....13 inch, not sure! The 16 inch does a really great job.
Your video is great and really helped me understand more. I purchased my first MacBook today, it’s being delivered tomorrow, I’m super excited!! 😁
I like this video, thanks for the tips!
I have a 14" Macbook, so having the doc on the bottom makes sense now as it is less 'widescreen'. Having it on either side will just make my entire screen square. On my older Macbook, I did what you did too!
The first thing I always change is to show Macintosh HD on the desktop along with any external drives and servers
Oh yeah that’s a good one, like the olden days. I don’t think they should have hidden them
I hate the trackpad clicks. I’d turn it off. I hate that. Also I’d turn on three finger moving windows
ok i do get you but why?
Same for me!
@@jaylascookies558 using three finger drag is much much faster, almost like using a mouse
Thank you for this VALUABLE information
No one asked
Hey Tyler, Tried some of the hack you demonstrated to setup a Mac... Found it really helpful.. Thank a ton.
I have been copying and evolving my .bashrc file for over 25 years now, along with a small bag of useful shell scripts. It's in the top 5 things I copy over to any new computer. Blender, VLC, and XCode are the first few apps I will install. Lately Darkroom and Affinity share my attention for raw image processing.
I like the tip about cleaning out your dock to just stuff you use often. They can always be found in the launchpad if you need them. One thing that bugs me (as I only got a Mac this year) is not having a quick calendar preview like Windows does where the date and time is.
You can edit widgets panel and add calender widget. Get widget panel by swiping with two fingers from right of trackpad.
@@ankita3081 I did not know that. THANK YOU! Just added it. :D
This was very interesting, I've been using Macs exclusively since 2005 and was amazed to see that we set up the computer almost identically. Just curious why you don't want to use the Mail app and what do you use in place of it?
I also don’t use the mail app. I just go to my email on the web browser.
Hey, thanks so much for the great advice. I just bought my first Mac Book today. Your advice should really help me out.
Good video, very nice edition, I liked the structure and order that you have in your mac, a second part would be incredible 🦾💻🖱
Last time i was this early the macbook air didnt even exisit
