    Gents. Sprinbok supporter here. I'm not one to comment often, but I feel I have to just say that you guys are not only the best rugby podcast in NZ, but possibly the world. No hyperbole.
    Always measured, thoughtful and insightful.
    Thank you very much.
    While I'm at it, a couple of random notes regarding the ABs from a South African perspective:
    1. PSDT, Kwagga and Cheslin are three of our best players. They play in Japan. Letting your players play overseas not only exposes them to different ways of playing, but forces your local clubs to improve player development. Take our locks, if Eben, Lood, Mostert, Snyman played in South Africa these past 4 years, we would not have Ruan Nortje now. The big argument for keeping the best players in your country is that it strengthens the local league, this might be true, but not to the extent administrators in England and NZ believe. The sooner you let your top players play international club rugby, the sooner your team will get back to nr 1.
    2. There are a few players you need to re-evaluate. Sevu Reece just isn't good. Sam Cane is incredible, stop doubting him and just write his name in pen on the team sheet until he can't play anymore. Richie Mo'unga is the best 10 in the world. You need to get him back and have your next 10 be his understudy, otherwise you lose the 'generational handover'.
    3. This is a special Springbok group. I think it's inaccurate to say 'the ABs are building' and playing against a 'settled Springboks team'. This is not the case. The Springboks are also rebuilding, they're blooding young talent, missing some key players, kicking for the corners instead of taking points and making more errors than we've seen them make in 8 years - because they're changing their game plan.
    The difference between the teams is not that one is building and the other is not, it's that one has a brand new coach and the other has Rassie. Back Razor 100%. He's your best option, he just needs time.
    4. This is good for the AB's. The thought of an AB group that knows how it feels to lose, that understands pressure and knows how to handle it is a scary thought. In fact, if you manage these next 18 months well and don't panic, I think we're in trouble.
    Much respect!

    I'm a Saffa now living in NZ. When I first visited NZ in the 90s, the place was on fire for rugby in a huge way. It was like the whole country was rugby-mad. In SA, rugby was still seen as a sport for some, but not everyone. I went back to SA for a project just before the RWC after living in NZ for a year and the change in atmosphere was telling. The whole of SA has now embraced rugby. There were big screens and beer absolutely everywhere - in all of the cities and small towns and townships.
    Somehow the situation had reversed. The whole country of SA is now eating and sleeping rugby and because few South Africans can afford expensive sports channels, watching the Springboks at big-screen TV venues or shebeens (traditionally illicit taverns) has become a community event. In SA, many fans don't just watch rugby at home in front of the TV. You braai with friends or go to the pub or join a whole community to share the cost of the screening.
    SA is likely to be massive over the next 10 years as over 60-million people now grow in passion for rugby and the Springboks. To say nothing of how winning on a global stage will encourage Africans as a whole. I suspect that from Kenya south, rugby could easily take off in a big way. Of course, that's great for the game in general. But it's only really good if steel sharpens steel - so we in NZ will need to match that kind of passion for the game.

    • @powerbite92
      @powerbite92 3 месяца назад +6

      Theres a few issues there. The old Apartheid regime during the 1980s pushed rugby hard for the NP voting white and cape coloured populations. So ZA Rugby was a very state led and propagandised product in the 1980s, when arguably the Bokke would have been the best in the world. In 1994 the rugby authorities saw a huge potential to grow the game but ironically it was the ANC who held the development back as they just wanted the funds, the Madiba magic and didnt care so much about grass roots rugby. The untapped potential has always been there but the issue I see is that the African bantu players are not coming through in the numbers expected. Many say that, like Indians, theyre not massively suited culturally to a full contact sport. Then theres learning the rules from a young age. Also notice that the successful african players, like Siya and Sacha went to some of the best schools in the world from a young age. The crowds at the beer drinks and on social media often reveal they know very little about rugby and my guess is that the support will drain the moment SA stops winning. Rassie is doing a good job bringing through some players but in the back row and second row he hasnt done a good job at bringing on the youth. My feeling is that, if the results go away from ZA, then this newfound support - most of whom dont play the game or understand it that well - will evaporate.

It's the tenacity of the Boks as well as, once again African wild dog mentality that pulls them through...not really the game play itself as bok these teams plays phenomenal rugby, albeit missed goals and opportunities here and there..I think tje latter is due to the fact that they are bok so good at what they do, that it is sometimes just the nerves or eagerness to win

      Agree - NZ way to technical, as Andy Farrel said after the pool game at WC , you know what you up against when playing SA, and you need to be ready for it, and need to ensure you stay in front on the score board.
      There is a blue print on Rassie's coaching - You play tight and tick the score board over with threes, then when you ahead with 12 to 15 points, then only you start the open up the game. So many examples over the past 20 years where he coached.

I believe the AB fans feel the same, so that is why when there is a loss on either side, it is deeply felt. The Boks were already good when SA had a limited population to field, due to an oppressive political ideology. Enters legend president Mandela 30 years ago, and we add 20 million men to the pool, in 1994. Just like that.
    These changes have now seen two new generations of young players emerge, talented, eager and hungry for the green jersey.
    We’ve only just gotten started, the depth of talent is incredible. There are unbelievably skilled players in schools rugby right now, all frothing for a spot on the international stage.

What puzzle me is how the AB do not recognize or select their oversea based players, it is the professional era, and the oversea based players will bring an extra dynamic to the team. Rassie understands this very well, Rugby is a professional sport, and this means players will move around.

      Most of our overseas players are past it. The few that are still under 35 either were never seriously in the frame for national selection, didn´t measure up when they were, or now play for other countries. This is a non-issue for NZ actually, and it´s only delusional, contrarian casual fans who like to claim that hauling Brodie Retallick (who was never the same player after his shoulder injury in 2019) or Ritchie Mo´unga (who played more then 50 tests and yet never mastered the art of the clearing kick) back from their cushy retirement gigs in Japan would make all the difference to this current All Black team. It´s a childish, short-termist fantasy that would inevitably destroy the domestic game and would barely benefit the national squad.

The results didn’t go our way but the Rugby was great, we saw young players take their chance and shine, we saw great spectacles at both venues. The Boks have a generational team with a generational coach and the ABs have them a blimmen good go. The NZRU are scared of losing 'intellectual property' to players based overseas that's why they refuse to pick New Zealand players based overseas. Losing South African teams and the Jaguares from Super Rugby has weakened the NZ players. They need to get with the times and pick the best players available, the game in this Country is already suffering with low attendance and low participation and we can't sustain players in this Country with the money offered overseas. I say open the selection criteria to the best players available not just NZ based players. Aaron Smith, Richie Mo'unga, Brodie Retallick, Leicester Fainga'anuku, Shannon Frizell as well as the injured Samisoni Taukei'aho and Cam Roigard would make a massive difference with this current side. South Africa have won two World Cups in a row and now dominate the All Blacks on a regular basis because they choose the best players available to them, meanwhile NZ remains stuck in the past with old way thinking.

      I disagree. The NZL system actually has a higher success rate almost at same level as France of junior players making it into ABs. As a school boy how does seeing playing overseas players keep being selected feel for you aspiring to become an AB. They would never get the opportunity to play. If you watched Super Rugby you’d see NZL is flush with talent. They need experience that is all that is lacking.

      So much misinformation in this comment. Super Rugby had good average attendance numbers this year that are actually on par with European club competitions, and a significant rise in viewership from home. Losing the Jaguares has only weakened Argentina, no one else. If you looked into overseas NZ players, you'd find that 99.9% of them are Super Rugby "rejects" (3rd-4th+ string players) who couldn't become season regulars. Aaron Smith and Retallick retired, they're not returning even if you changed eligibility. So what? We change the rules to get a centre/ wing we don't need, a hard hitting (woman-beating) loosie who we have replacement candidates for already, and a 10 we actually would benefit from? You'd change the rules all for one player? Ludicrous.

Confidence in the systems implemented by a coach who's trust has been earned. The all blacks have just started with a new coaching team, new systems and new players. The coaches still need to earn the players trust and buy in into the game plan and strategies. These things take time. As a bok fan I have no doubt that by 2026 tour we'll have close the the polished all blacks of old and by the world cup we'll see the all blacks at their peak again.

      @SamWashkansky There is a difference. The Boks in 2015 lost to Japan and Argentina for the first time ever. They lost again to Argentina in 2016 and then added losing to Italy for the first time ever, got hammered 57/15 by ABs in Durban that same year and got hammered again 57/0 in 2017 in NZ. They hit rock bottom, so any improvement from there would be noticeable. 2017 They smashed Italy 35/6 in a revenge match. 2018, they beat NZ at Wellington and then World Champions in 2019. Under Foster, ABS were a little shaky at best. They weren't in the same state as the Boks were at their lowest. An argument can be made that they have slipped further losing 3 from the last 4 under Scott Roberston. In saying that, sometimes you have to take a step back before you move 5 steps forward. So I agree in a little bit more time we will know which way the ABs are going, forward/backward.

    Boks are a long way into the Rassie regime. Good players who have transformed into Legends all retained from 2019, 2023 campaigns.
    They have the right and the luxury of seamlessly introducing exciting new talent…
    The AB’s on the other side are in full rebuild mode. Brand new coaching system, DMac only has just been given the keys, the young talent are becoming true starters.. with all that, the AB’s are still really REALLY close.

      Of the 23 players in both teams, Boks had 10 players, and ABs had 10 players who were involved in that 57-0 loss to the ABs. Boks missing a few first choice guys as well in this series. We had quite a few less experienced guys playing: Moodie, Nortje, Grant, Jayden, Steenekamp, Sacha, Elrigh. We've also got new coaches, new systems, and new players. The one constant for us vs NZ though is that the core coaching group has remained the same

      @@kristian762 Are you agreeing or disagreeing? Yes the Springboks had relatively new caps; however their coaching group is the same since 2021 after that defeat. Rassie was appointed the head coach shortly afterwards; even though Jacques Nienaber was head coach in 2020 - 2023, Rassie never left.
      On the whole the ABs had the fewer caps for one, a whole new coaching group that wasn't there in that defeat. Jason Ryan only came in 2022 (if my memory serves me correct). The ABs coaching group is a whole new group. We are not comparing the same situations. ABs also lost a large number of their core group. As mentioned Beauden Barrett is the most capped player in the squad of 33 with 129 caps. EVERY other AB player is below 100.

    • @kristian762
      @kristian762 3 месяца назад

      @Kittz1301 ja im sort of agreeing, we are in different phases but there are still some similarities. I'm saying the ABs coaching group is completely different, but we're also in a transitional phase in terms of our players and our systems, and there were a lot of guys not available for us. We have 2 new coaches in critical areas, attack and defense, bringing their own take on it and trying to implement their own outlook.
      I think a more accurate comparison would be to look at the total caps of all 23 players for both teams, instead of just starting caps, even though NZ didn't use half their bench it's still a 23 man game. I haven't looked at that, and I'm sure we'd still have a bit more caps total, but the difference wouldn't be as vast once TJ, Beauden and Anton are on the field.

    • @Kittz1301
      @Kittz1301 3 месяца назад +2

      @@kristian762 Nope ABs would still be below. Springboks on the bench had 242 caps… Beauden Barrett was the most capped player out of both groups with 129. The only other player with 100+ was Eben with 125. Even adding the bench to both totals (408 on AB bench) the ABs were out-capped! Yes agreed the ABs are in a different phase entirely. Like I said the Springboks have had a solid group of players and coaching staff since 2018.
      ABs have basically hit reset button. The coaches are new but that is also because Razor is completely new and his game plan is different. He has the final say in how he sees the ABs style of play going forward. However, in light of both matches: the ABs will be a different bag of fruit next year. They played extremely well, for the mere fact that they were in the matches for 60-65minutes shows they have plenty of room to grow. They haven’t reached their potential yet. With more experience and more tight pressure games and the experience that comes with it. Only time will tell in 2025.

    It is frustrating to hear the one sided assessment of Gipper and Bryn on why the ABs ‘couldn’t get the job done’. There is absolutely no focus on the clear chances the Boks left on the table, eg Cheslin’s offload to PSDT 5-metres away; Sasha’s skewed grubber kick after his break; Cheslin’s drop kick in last 5 minutes when Boks needed to keep the ball with ABs under the pump; Sasha’s miss out front. What the AB pundits fail to acknowledge is how poor this ABs team is compared to any of the AB teams of last 30 years and the Boks experimental approach in this series which led to many unforced errors. The losses could’ve been massive but for the Boks high risk and expansive approach, which to be fair will pay off in time. We are probably witnessing a shift in world rugby which may leave the ABs behind even more. The Autumn / November game versus Ireland will be massive to see if the ABs have turned the corner. Hope they compete better then.

    I think that even though the ABs played both matches with intensity and created real pressure on the Boks, that the Boks did not play at all well in either match. In the second test Pollard was pedestrian (and Sacha extremely nervy when he came on) and our back line attack was toothless. Our lineouts throughout were very poor and our scrum was well matched by the ABs. Our breakdown contest in the second test was well below that of the ABs. In that sense we were lucky to win and did it merely by older heads keeping calm and the ABs opening the door for us trough ill-timed penalties. We need to play a lot better going forward, and actually click as a team, if we want to boast with being "best in the world".

    the best dent the boks confidence is if abs could have kicked the goals when they were 14 points up already 2weeks ago, thats how crucially wrong they got it. scott barrett may want to be captain, but it was the wrong option when u have the boks pinned down with 17 points on them. so actually this week the abs after a win could be in a better state if they won 2 weeks ago. but the abs let the boks score so easily and ontop of that the boks didnt play that well but still won. this week the boks played better, the abs didnt take their chances again and it was game over. this is like Ireland v abs all over again because the boks defense is better than abs attack, the attack of the boks just like Ireland pounces on their chances easily, the abs continue not to.

    Its an improvement for NZ, you won the Breakdown battle, the lineouts battle and matched Boks in scrum mostly. The problem is RSA likes to finish with their best team and the starters are handy enough too. As a Saffa I'd say Sattiti had a great game & Codie, we expect BB would be a better 10.
    But Dmac seems a project. RSA's Tony Ball is not sticking, the whole structure isn't happening with the backs, DDA threw a lot of ball behind the Boks backline.
    As a Bok supporter it feels like the most disappointing 2 wins with really average disrupted performances, with no full FH to winger backline unleash. NZ needs to be prepared to lose more playing new blood in the NH tours and low value comp's. By trying to win every game, you exhaust your frontline and dont develop a squad. Chill and blood some depth, get more Blues players on. Good Luck, well timed losses are the breakfast of Tournament World cup Champions.
    Supporters need to see a long term project before a short term expectation.

In both tests it feels like the Boks are experimenting with an expanded attack, but that they can go to their DNA in a the last 20-minutes. The Boks have so much more power to come back from injury that they will be better in the last 20-minutes going forward. The other worry is it looks like the Boks have found their Dan Carter. They lost to Ireland in their backyard this year and in the group stage in the World Cup. They struggled to beat a poorly coached All Black team twice in their backyard. Their young players are flashy but make poor decisions. Their experienced players like Marx, PSDT, Etzebeth, Kolisi, Pollard are their key men that have bailed them out.

    A few months ago I had an email read out saying these rule changes and obsession with speeding up the game by super rugby was going to cost Aus/NZ again. As it did before. It is not a proving ground for test rugby. Rather a format to engrain anything but test rugby with ruck and run rugby. SA played badly and won. Because they’re experts at test rugby. Aussie physicality needs to be taught in a training ground that’s how bad it is. Only the Blues plays a format remotely similar to what test rugby is and the powers that be don’t want to change that.
    Nz fronted up due to legacy and history but they fade badly in the last 20 time after time. Even they need more of it, but now they’re off to play touch rugby with Aus.

      Theyre not "trying" out a new way of playing. The rules have changed so the boks cant abuse slowing the ball down as they did when they won both their world cups. Theyre apdating to the new rules as are all teams. Boks are not that far ahead and should be worried they arent winning these games by more against a rebuilding team espcially at home. Sure the ABs made silly decisions and kicked poorly ultimatley losing them both games however the positives are huge for them. I've watched interviews, debates, videos etc when i realized: these guys aren't just a group of men coming together to play a sport they all enjoy, but they are a whole brotherhood, and when they wear that black jersey it was like that brotherhood just exploded into full on war and enjoyment coz it's not just a game they play with guys they know, but a game they play with their brothers. And i can tell you now that the Boks have adopted that philosophy. Previously we were a bunch of guy who came together to play a sport we love, but we never really had what the all blacks had. The all blacks brotherhood have fallen apart, they not playing the game for each other anymore, they not really appreciating running out with that black jersey on, and they not as willing to put it all on the line for the man beside them.
