Maserati GranTurismo Folgore review - Maserati's 751bhp first EV! Autocar

  • This is the new Maserati GranTurismo Folgore, and it's a Maserati grand tourer like no other, because it's fully electric.
    Yup, the GranTurismo coupe is back, and it looks as glorious as ever it did. It'll be available with a V6 in two states of tune or, intriguingly, as here, with three electric motors. And between them they make quite a lot of power.
    The GranTurismo Folgore's peak power output is some 751bhp, which is enough to take this 2260kg kerbweight Maserati from 0-62mph in 2.7sec and give it a 199mph top speed.
    The battery is big: the Folgore has an 83kWh usable battery, which can charge at up to 270kW. Range is predicted to be 280 miles or thereabouts when the car goes on sale late summer 2023. In the UK, the Folgore will cost close to £200,000.
    Join Matt Prior as he tests this prototype on a race track in Italy, in some dismal conditions. And stay tuned for more updates on the GranTurismo, including reviews of the finished article - with electric or internal combusted power.

      Evolution of design not revolution of design, its a common concept in car manufacturing, bmw stuck at it for a while, the 911 has almost not changed, aston design language only evolves, the golf evolves, audi do it. Ferrari also. Its not a bad thing if the design language is timeless.

    Wait... So you CAN'T turn off the noise?! A GT that forces the owner - after spending how much - to listen to FAKE noise? FYI, the noise that is "so central to the character" is practically unavoidable, and so has been the focus of a personality feature. In EVs, that is NOT the case, nor should it ever be. The only time ANY drivetrain noise should be present is when it is AUTHENTIC!! Outside of that - which would be a deal-killer for me (how annoying would that be over time?!! - this looks like a really nice, exciting car. Given they have a few months to work on things, how about spending a few minutes to decide on an on/off switch for the stupid noises?

    Use the front unit only, just put it in the back.
    400 horsepower and plenty of electric torque, with reduced weight, will be enough for many, not everyone wants to do drag racing in their luxury GT.

    Did Maserati say whose high current charging network they will be accessing. Are they going to join Ionity (BMW, Mercedes, Porsche at present)? Other than Ionity and Tesla, the rest of the high current networks, seem to be a total mess of different connectors and payment systems. Each national government should mandate a single national payment network and pricing for each country and the EU should mandate a single payment network and pricing structure for EV charging across the whole of the EU. Having to have various apps on one's phone to access different payment systems is a complete nonsense.

    • @gigabyte2248
      @gigabyte2248 Год назад +1

      The EU mandated a single connector years ago, and every new EV except the ageing Nissan Leaf uses CCS2. In the UK, it is now law that new charge points need to accept credit/debit card contactless payments. Since Gridserve took over the motorway service station network, all their chargers now accept contactless (and there's more of them, with more uptime, than ever before). EV makers don't need to sell their cars with a charging network package - public infrastructure is good enough now.

    I wonder who would buy an EV that looks that good, and that ‘normal’. EVs are absolutely not environmentally friendly, the CO2 break-even point versus ICE being at a mileage much higher than most owners will reach before replacing. Accordingly, most EV purchases have been exercises in virtue signalling - aided by the weirdest possible design.

    • @jonathantaylor1998
      @jonathantaylor1998 Год назад +1

      Yes, purely in manufacturing terms, a BEV (currently) produces more CO2 to build than an equivalent-sized ICE vehicle - down to sourcing of the chemicals required to manufacture the batteries.
      However, just reading up on 2 independent reports widely available on the web - from Bloomberg and Reuters - it's interesting though that, whilst their 'CO2 modelling' takes account of the CO2 generated from battery resource mining and the CO2 as a result of electricity production, neither report refers to the CO2 produced in the extraction, refining, shipping and dispensing of petrol and diesel fuel... only to the CO2 generated as tailpipe emissions over the life of an ICE vehicle.
      In addition, whilst, at the moment, there are very few BEV batteries that are at a point in their 'life' where they would be suitable for recycling - once they can't power a car for what would be deemed an acceptable range, they then get a second life as home / business battery storage units etc - once batteries do become recyclable, over 90% of all battery chemicals can be extracted and reused in the manufacture of new battery packs, thereby reducing the battery manufacturing CO2 of future BEVs.
      Having said all of that, even the Reuters report suggested that the breakeven mileage could be as low as only 8,400 miles, depending on whether or not how much clean electricity is being generated.

    Do you honestly think people are going to buy these electric milk floats !!!! They do absolutely nothing for me

    I don't understand these reviews showing this car half hidden in regards to the interior! The exterior is old and boring, looks like the old car. They might as well show inside because this is putting me to sleep.

    I can't really see the market for a two tonnes, two hundred thousand pounds Maserati that sounds like an air-conditioning unit; you might as well buy a Tesla and save yourself a ton of money.

    I don't know how they can justify the price of the ICE version let alone the EV

      Maybe cool it with the blatant lies. I don't know of any Chinese EV Power Train suppliers to European Automakers who can provide a 751hp capable battery.
      Soo far Stellantis has signed deals to hoard supply capacity from Samsung SDI and LG Chem. Only Samsung SDI has a history of supplying high powered battery packs.
