I have to apologize to you. I had a preconceived opinion that anybody who drives a sweet animal to a butcher is cold hearted. Yet after watching your videos, you and your family have the utmost respect and kindness for your animals. I tip my hat for what you do and wish you and your family nothing but the best 👍
Ending your last few videos while eating with your wife and kids is a nice touch. Thank you for giving us an insight into the details of butchering your cattle.
City slicker my entire life, but I cant get enough of these videos. I now buy Dexter meat from a small family farm similar to yours outside of the city. I buy a lot of ground beef each time, usually 25 lbs., and get a discount. It costs more than supermarket, but it definitely tastes better because it is grass fed only.
Another great video! Thanks. Just one comment..... that trailer..... I have two suggestions. A. Buy a couple of gallons of Rustoleum paint, some paint brushes and rollers and have your kids paint it over the winter or B. Go down to the local High School and see the Art Teacher. Propose a contest for the art students to come up with a mural to paint on the trailer along with a "Just a Few Acres Farm" logo. Pick the best one then have students paint the trailer. Buy them a couple of Pizzas and let them have at it!!
My daughter and I were just talking about that. She is a good painter and I'm hoping she gets the time to do it. That trailer looks like WW2 surplus right now.
Recent subscriber and love how you break down and explain everything. The why, how’s and how-not’s! Always looking forward to your next video. But watching your previous ones in the meantime.
Im a pretty tough dude, I'm a philosopher, writer, machinist, woodworker and grumpy old bastard, and I totally love (in a manly way) you and your whole family. its whats wholesome about people like you and America, but Jesus H I could not send that cow top the butchers, Id be weeping even tough I eat tons of beef - you are a special guy with guts.
Its a good feeling knowing where your food comes from. Being home grown and farm raised, in my book is way better. That quick attach was a nice fix, you done good. My John Deere has quick attach but i like the Skid Steer style much better.
Your family is so fun to watch. Ever think about allowing one or two people to come work on your farm for free? I'm thinking like a week visit and they might even have to pay you for the experience. Having these farm helpers would give you more content for your channel too. I'm out here in Oregon, grew up on a cane berry farm spending hours on both the International Model B along with Massey Fergusons and Ford tractors. I love watching your channel because I've lived this life and do miss it now that I'm retired and living in the city. Any-who just an idea that people would love spending time on your farm and if they came with skills to that would be huge plus!
I twist the tail of cattle to get them moving if they are stubborn, as long as I have their heads in the right direction. It has been 20 years, but I never had problems with loading pigs. I just walk everyday with the bucket of their food and walk different paths to leave their food in different spots at different heights but where they easily get to it. If you leave their food on the same spot, they expect it there everyday and will not go through non familiar spaces. When I load them in the trailer, I walk the bucket of some food into front of the trailer and they get on, while I exit by the small front door and then close the back door behind them.
Hi Pete! Always great to see life on a working farm. You might not want to caption a video with "she's going to the butcher" and have a pic of your daughter at the same time. Lol
If you mounted the bucket to the lower pin hole, assuming the hydraulic cylinders have some extra range left, wouldn't you have a greater arc of travel, and a steeper down angle?
My husband and I love watching everything you and your family does. I would like to suggest a pallet chicken roost for the chicken house. Something like that might work well for your setup.
If you go the upper hole on the loader, you will get a greater dump angle with the same length of stroke on the dump cylinders. You will not have the same load over height - it will be less but you don't load high sided trucks/trailers that I know of. I would check with your dealer but I think there was a higher flow pump for the 656 - you might also have them verify the relief valve pressure is where it should be. Some were marked on the end hex. I enjoy your videos - glad to see the old red iron still being used - takes me back to my early career.
Nice to have a good butcher close by I wish I had one closer, but I razed goats boar goats so me and brother did our on close to deer season so we could mixed some of the meat. Goat is very dry meat so we would mix it with deer and use pork belly in the mix too bring a better taste of it.
I believe you might be wrong about the position of the bucket attachment. I think that if you change the position of the bolt you will gain some more “dumping angel”. It should help based of what I could see from the video. Best of luck from Sweden!
ok look at it this way then, the other option is the let it grow old and die, that means suffering for a lot longer than they do at the butcher, and news flash evry thing dies. But as he seaid in a previous video the animals have at most 2 bad days on the farm, they are well taken care of.
Genesis 9:3 does quote God as saying, “Every creature that lives shall be yours to eat.” I would say a prayer for the animal. This animal may have fed over 400 meals at 1lb
There is an island in Alaska that was seeded with cattle long ago. The intent was to let them roam and then harvest. Island in heavy in fog and the cattle have become wild and not harvested. From the stories I have heard they have become lean, protective and die of old age. Assume meat would be like moose.
I have been looking at the same quick hitch conversion for my 2250 loader. Let us know how you like it. I think you bucket will work better in the lower set of holes, if I remember from when I ran a 656 loader as a kid.
Pete I'm so glad your wife didn't have to get in that virus nightmare as a nurse. She is a blessing to be strong enough to be your partner. Your dad looks like a true gentleman also. I think what You have is such a blessing that was earned by you. What kind of tractors did your grandfather have? Did they make a living on just the farm? I've watched your videos on how you built the farmhouse. I've watched at least 3 times and used your advice on a few fixes on my house. I think you daughter will became a VET, she and your son are so caring and giving working with the animals. The work ethic is what is missing today, but I think this will change. Have you heard of the veggie boys ? They have mentioned your name before. 14 family members work on 400 acre farm they do silage in the huge bags, are you sure those are not biodegradable? If you did something with Andrew I bet both of you could grow quicker. Just an idea. All the best, keep up the great job , America needs more positive thinking and growth that you provide. Neal
I was surprised to see you with that hot shot. In our ten years raising Dexters we’ve never needed one. Usually a strong tail grab works for all but the most cantankerous.
@@JustaFewAcresFarm I took the message from Don Covay better than Huey Lewis's more popular in America version: ruclips.net/video/TCnPxGuqbiM/видео.html Reading through the RUclips comments on the song. The cylinder pivot and arm pivot holes need to be closer together for more range of motion on the bucket. Measure the old bucket brackets and I'll bet they're closer together than the forklift. The holes are farther apart on the forklift brackets for more leverage.
Trying to visualize by pointing my index finger (hydraulic arm) horizontally on the edge of a ruler and sliding my thump (main arm) downwards the ruler (bucket) seems to tip down, I would give it a try anyways. Given enough clearance it would also seem convenient to add a hole for the pin further to the bucket side to get it tip even further. Greetings and keep going.
I love this format. You are an excellent instructor but I know you must, at times struggle for content. You, sharing a day on the farm, then cooking a meal and sitting at the table, I will watch this over and over again. Great episode!
I have a pin on my round baler that I put a nail in when it broke in the field. When I had time I put the correct pin in it. Next time I got to the field it broke again. So I field fixed it with another nail. This happened to me twice. So finally I just said I am going to leave the nail in there. That was probably 5 or 6 years ago. Still going strong. Not sure why the pin breaks but the nail doesn't. But not going to change it anymore
Lol the pin is probably designed to break faster so you have to keep buying them! It's like how dishwashers, fridges, and printers are just garbage nowadays XD
The nail trick has spread off the farm. You'd be suprised how often i find cars with nails in place of cotter pins, even in the city. Always sketches me out, but i suppose ive never seen a broken one.
I wonder if you could move your lower pin hole closer to the bucket I think that it would have been better for dumping if the IH frame that you built off of had been turned over That girl frame was probably designed to keep the forks closer to level at higher levels.

Pete have you changed your hydraulic filter lately? That could account for the slow reaction to the new loader.
