We are so excited about this latest news!! There are still a few things we have to finish up before they can jump in with the wood interior so we'll be tackling that as well. We need to finish up the coating systems on the inside, and lay down wire and pipe for electrical and plumbing. And we'll be coordinating everything to work with the Mobili Mare team.
As you know, we've been though a lot of tough hurdles with this project and had some really hard moments. This news is the best thing that has happened to us since we started!! Just proving that the most amazing things happen when you least expect it!

i want to be positive like all the other comments, but that single chine steel hull is a shocker, my ocd would have me cutting off the entire bottom and starting again, Hope it all works out well in the end good luck guys

Thanks for the tour of the fab factory and explanation of the process. I noticed you have dark tinted windows, and lots of em. When we bought our Islander 38 we had the same mindset. Lots of light and ability to see our surroundings. Ours has 4 huge windows port and starboard and 2 small ones forward for the salon. What we actually found is that it gets so hot that we have them covered on the inside to keep light out. The dark color on the windows also absorbs heat and they get really hot which dissipates into the boat. We ended up putting a chrome mirror film on the outside. It is a one way mirror, it reflects the light and keeps the window cooler to the touch. Looks great too. Easy to apply later. Keep rolling! Happy Easter.
Thanks for sharing this with us! We haven't put windows on yet. Whatever you see is probably just blackness in the boat. We were thinking of creative ways we can make curtains but that was more for privacy than heat. But now that you mention this, we will keep this in mind when we buy the windows. The reflective surfaces really do work wonders when it comes to heat, as long as it doesn't effect your vision while sailing then thats a great solution! Cheers!!

Dang. As a cabinetmaker of 40 years, 12 of those making cruise ship cabinets, this is so interesting for me. You did a great presentation of his shop, which is impressive. Looking fwd to see their work on your interior fit out.
Ah you have a wealth of knowledge about this then! We are excited to learn from them and if you have any design tip, do let us know. We know basic wood working but they are next level! We are going to be prepping the interior for them to come in and do their thing (ask you know) wiring and plumbing, then we'll be going through the design process and build! Exciting stuff!!!

O casco, sobretudo os cordões de solda ainda parecem muito "brutos", ou seja, pouco ou nada hidrodinâmicos e isso poderá ser tornar um problema seríssimo à navegação e aos custos de manutenção.
Essas quinas podem comprometer a vida útil da tinta abaixo da linha d'água e o tempo e custo de uma nova pintura é alto e exige tirar o casco da água.
Em náutica diz-se que quando um linha não está harmoniosa é porque está errada ou pouco funcional.
O acréscimo da popa tem ângulos muiito estranhos. Às chapas de aço na popa a estibordo estão amassadas. Tenham muito cuidado!
Talvez isso esteja sendo considerado para a etapa da pintura, mas não deixem para a última hora, quando o orçamento diminui.
Não levem a mal minhas observações.

I wonder if the welding "scars" are going to be protruding in the hull as we see here. Or there is more grinding to smooth it out before painting?
I wonder if the aft starboard dorsal section would be best consolidated of those patches.

You have a great point and we are looking into this. The tarp covers well but with lots of rain there is still some drips. We like your thinking.
@@lahakai Thanks wasn’t trying to tell you how run your business, but I thought maybe you forgot to mention it.
But this is like building a house, you dry it in first before you start the inside work. Or you will be fighting the weather all the way. Hope you guys have picked out some opening hatches remember air circulation is important also. Insulation is another thing you may not think about. Lots of people don’t. But steel absorbs heat and UV rays.. Also the cold. And old boats that wasn’t insulated they sweat in cool weather on the inside, even if it is cooler inside than out, insulation can stop that. Sweating causes mildew witch can be harmful to you health. And maybe part of the reason it rusted so much from the inside out. I don’t know what kind to use on a boat but maybe you could look into it. Just a few thoughts and maybe a reminder here. Good luck with this big project.
Maybe foam insulation sheets with a foil backing that could be glued to the inside hull walls, like down to the waterline. IDK! Just something that don’t absorb water.
Newer yachts even fiber glass hulls, have insulation these days. So there is something you can use.
I lived in a old house years ago, that wasn’t insulated and in the winter mostly the inside walls would sweat and water would run down the wall. And mildew was a big problem.
Funny you say that, we are looking at insulation options right this moment! We spoke to the manufacturer to find one that is water resistant - as you said, the boat can sweat. We do have a couple large hatches that came with the boat. One in the main cabin and one in the forward cabin. But we'd love a couple of small portholes on the side of the superstructure if we can swing as well.

Pretty cool.. especially when you guys don't seem to have the craftsmanship to build a quality interior. Are you guys completely done with the steel work on Lahakai?? There was several places where the steel plating didn't look nice. It looked like someone welded a temporary patch.
I am impressed, 1st rebuild I have seen hiring interior pros. Don't forget to sound proof generator room. Saw a 2 diesel engine cat fire up their generator today to catch up on power, they have mega solar but had cloud days so fell low on lithium power.
After the design and build all the parts of your new interior will they be installing it as well? What an opportunity. Looking forward to seeing how this all comes together. I am most wanting to see the systems install. All that wiring has got to be a bit scary to think about. I like that you are going full electric. Something I would like If I manage to get a boat some day. Being able to stay out as long as I have spares and food would be nice.
Yes! They will be installing it and we'll show that whole process as we learn along side them. We will first lay down wire and then they will come in with the wood structure. After that we'll start working on the systems install. If you have any questions during the process, let us know! After we'll try to organize everything, what worked, what didn't and try to write it all down so maybe it can help you when you get your boat! Cheers!

Tendo o barco dentro do estaleiro do fabricante de móveis em Itália, diríamos "que asno" ...🤣🤣🤣. Dito isto, não gosto de dar conselhos, peço-lhe que preste atenção ao pano que colocou sobre o barco, que me parece ser feito de ráfia de polipropileno, um produto que conheço há quase 60 anos porque o meu pai foi o primeiro no mundo a compreender como deve ser embalado (cortado e cosido), um produto inventado por uma grande empresa italiana (Montefibra).
A ráfia de polipropileno, se não tiver sido aditivada com estabilizadores, pulveriza ao sol, sem aditivos pode durar algumas semanas, com aditivos durante alguns meses.

The finish work and interior is certainly an exciting part of the build and the area's you'll have the most contact with for sure. I do have to ask if there's other plans for the hull, I can't help but notice the tin canning (from sand blasting or poor patching?), the plates, welds, and blends, the body lines, etc. - Maybe this deserves some more attention before the finishing? I admire your bravery and wish you the best outcome on this project!
We are very excited about the interior as well! We are going to try to tour some other boats they have worked on to get a good idea of the possibilities too. The shadows from the sun on the hull exaggerated the welds on the back. There is no canning, just a couple repairs. Since this is a restored boat and not a new one there are some areas that have salvaged steel still, though we changed practically everything below the waterline. And this will be covered while fairing the boat. Cheers!!
@@lahakai I think that's a great idea to look at other boats for ideas, always nice to pick the best features any try to incorporate them into the build. I re-watched the video a few times to see what you said about the shadows, that is certainly one way to look at it. Looks like an interesting challenge to fair- hopefully it goes well for you both. Looking forward to seeing how things turn out.
We had some bad luck with welders in our previous location. Not sure if you saw our earlier videos but some of the welds end up rather large because of this. And in retrospect we would have changed the whole panel and not patched if we had known. We knocked down most of them and found some pros here at the new shipyard to fix any issues and we had a marine engineer look at the entire boat and give his ok. It’s not her best side but we will fix it up! Thanks for following along and your feedback!! Lots of good stuff to come!

Going back to the previous one, making the boat fully electric is fantastic, but I was wondering, does the prop function as a dynamo while sailing.
And don't be blinded by the numbers of the panels and the windmill, which are theoretical, the practice is always different, as far as the inverter is concerned, take a look at Victron, they have a good combination product, in terms of charging / conversion / backup / shore power , and all in one unit.

Victron is number one on our list as well! An all in one unit would be amazing. We need to see what is available in Brazil for their products and the price range. So this is still in the works. Cheers friend!
I wouldn't even make an aquarium for my fish from this cage covered with thin and curved plates, I would be afraid that it would get a hole and the fish would swim away.🤔😱
Generally speaking, boats are curved. The thickness, glad you asked, is 4mm-5mm which is standard and the structure is reenforced from when this boat (already) sailed across the Atlantic Ocean. This will do just find on keeping the fish - on the outside. And if you have doubts, you can watch the episode where we had a Marine Engineer certified by the Brazilian Military to evaluate our boat. Are the guys at Mare Marine going to work on the outside of the hull as well because it certainly looks like it needs a lot of work to get it smooth and fair. Love the new design of the davits.

What is the background of the collaboration? How did it come about?
Mobili Mare is located right here in Navegantes, Brazil, in the same town we are doing our construction, and provides wood furniture worldwide. They currently do motor boats and are looking to expand into sailboats and become a more familiar brand. Our boat in Brazil is a big project. There are not always the same accessibility to resources especially when it comes to electric boats, which is a fairly new thing here. So it's the perfect collaboration where we together try to showcase a boat that is not just utilizing the latest technologies but also beautiful. This appeal can start to have an impact on how people feel about electrical boats. Especially here were the sun shines bright and people do mostly coastal sailing.
MDF ? On a boat ?
Sorry, where did you get MDF? Where on the boat? This company also makes furniture for regular interiors if you are referring to something in the video. We haven't mentioned materials that we will use yet, but we will be using marine-grade plywood. Cheers!
I don't like wood in a boat. I prefer fibre glass plate furniture instead of wood. Moisture soakes into wood soon and wood starts to rotten.
I wonder if anyone has tried to turn a boat upside down to work on the hull.
Especially when it's in the same condition/stage of development as Lahakai.

This is actually quite common for new boats. For our build, we had no idea we were going to replace practically the whole bottom. If you check out episode 3, you'll see we suffered from a bad sale which started this madness. And then we were in a club at the time, not a shipyard. So it wasn't an option. But its definitely a thing! Tell your friend they've on to something! 😉

WHY IS YOUR BOAT LOOKS LOTS OF WELDING LINE? THE SURFACE ISNT SMOOTH FLAT.
Sorry but it seems like a waste of money putting a new interior in that hull . I don't believe ive ever seen a hull made of a metal patchwork , the poor craftsmanship of the original metal work cannot be unnoticed .
I sense some degree of ignorance as to how metal boats are constructed. (But there is lots of opportunity to educate found within…)
I have never built a boat but I have faired a lot and the amount of irregularities are going to really suck to get fair and looking nice. I have to wonder if by the time this project gets completed they will have more invested than a good complete core would have cost. That much said you got to do you, if this project makes sense to you and you are having a good time.
You haven't see may boats then. The fit and finish in the stern leaves something to be desired, that will hardly be visible. And few dimples never hurt anyone, doesn't directly correlate to the integrity condition of the hull. Not a plastic boat it has some character.
