Hell, yeah! Chrissie Amphlett and the boys. It’s a belter.
RIP Chrissie. She was so badass on stage.
Thanks for being here and have a great weekend. Cheers G&A
This song was so,far ahead of its time and still can hold its own as a great rock song, even after all of this time. Loved it then and still love it now. R.I.P. Chrissy Amphlett, what a voice and presence you had.
Thanks so much for being here and supporting us. Be well and have a fab day. G&A
Agreed. Losing her was a major loss to music. If I could go back in time and see only 1 band, The Divinyls--with her out front--would probably be my choice. And I'd want it to be in one of the more modest clubs before they hit big where her presence would be up close and raw.
You're right, Aus pub rock in the 80's was it's own breed of music, and so accessible. All these great bands (and there are still so many you haven't heard of ) played regularly at the big pubs and clubs in the city and inner city suburbs, we got up close and personal with them all the time. The venues were all dark and smoky, with beer soaked carpets, but they all had a stage and a dancefloor and live bands every bloody night. What a time to be alive ay? Loving this, thanks so much guys.
What a wonderful time alright. I loved the grungy uni pubs, we’d have live acts every lunchtime and Friday nights.
Yep what he said.
I love Chrissy's powerful, husky, slightly sultry voice and how it almost breaks into a yodel. My favourite from the Divinyls is 'Pleasure and Pain'. Chrissy came across as a 'bad girl'. Ironically she had a cousin, also in the music business, who had a softer voice and a squeaky clean image. She looked a bit like the actress, Sandra Dee. Chrissy's cousin was 'Little Pattie' who began by singing surf culture sugary- sweet songs as a very young teenager.
Thanks for being here and have a great weekend. Cheers G&A
Barney, up early and in fine voice again. I have to admit, as a spotty teenager, I might have had a bit of a crush on Little Pattie which I later transferred (like Monkey Pox) to Chrissy. I was going to say Bird Flu but MP is more topical. Anyway, keep it up, you're doing us proud.
@@mrmockatoo6786 I was never an admirer of LP as I didn't think she had much talent. She's not my kind of bird. It was pleasing to hear Stevie Wright compliment we birds in his audience before singing, 'Friday On My Mind,' on the Thamesmen reaction/s which I'm enjoying. However I was aghast that John Farnham was not included in the first week and hooted loudly about that! Have you heard The Teskey Brothers? I'm flying off to the bush tomorrow. Looking forward to hearing lots of different birdsong.
@@barnowl5774 i did mention I was very young...and you're right, but it wasn't her singing I was hoping to pluck. Yeah Teskeys are the real deal. Safe journey and good luck with the hunting.
I had no idea Chrissy was related to Little Patty #mind blown 😄
It’s so good watching all these blasts from the past! I’m 68.
Australia punching above its weight for so many years…
I'm so glad to have grown up in Australia in the '80s and '90s. The funny thing is we kind of took our music for granted. We loved and supported it, but it never occurred to me that it was anything different from what was happening in other countries. Now, 30-40 years later, it's amazing to realise how great and punk-y a lot of our "mainstream" hits were.
The Divinyls did a live cover version of the Easybeats song, I'll make you happy. It's a absolute classic
Thanks for being here and have a great weekend. Cheers G&A
You were spot on, the Aussies rocked the 80s!
I was lucky enough to see many of these acts live as a teenager including the Divinyls , who absolutely killed it live!
Keep digging into that Aussie rabbit hole.......its long!
👌❤🇦🇺
Thanks for being here and checking our channel out. More soon!! Thanks G&A
The world needs to discover Aussie Pub bands from the 80s.
The Sydney and Melbourne inner city pub scene was thriving in the 70s & 80s for bands. But, the audiences were brutally honest. So bands like the Divinyls came up through the pubs and only survived as an act by becoming very tight bands and really honing their craft before recording anything.
was the same in brissie, as i told my kids ( which the do ignore, for a big part) i was spoil t for choice
Divinyals Pleasure and Pain absolutely brilliant. Saw them many times Christie was a rock goddess.
Thanks for being here and have a great weekend. Cheers G&A
Think you guys would be blown away by their song "Pleasure & Pain"
Thanks for being here and have a great weekend. Cheers G&A
To see Chrissie live in a small tightly packed venue she was menacing.
Chrissie was a power house! Magnetic describes her perfectly Alex. She commanded attention all right! So many hits still to hear from the Divinyls. She also had the most bueatiful speaking voice as l recall. Her passing was a shock l can tell you! RIP Chrissie...
Thankyou gentlemen.
Thanks Chris...great list! 🤘🤗🇦🇺🎸
YESSSS!!!!
Thanks for being here and have a great weekend. Cheers G&A
I am British, moved to Australia in 2008 and discovered all this old Aussie music and I know how it feels to discover it all! Bloody fantastic - if we'd been a more connected world back then this awesome music would have been huge in the UK and US I'm quite sure. I know you've finished your Aussie week now but maybe you'd like to check out Australian Crawl - my favourite is "Reckless" ❤️ xx
Thanks Green!! Many thanks for being here and have a fab weekend G&A
"In My Life" shows Chrissie at full force, spitting out her words with her full on Aussie accent.
Thanks for being here and have a great weekend. Cheers G&A
Divinyls were the BOMB!! That was my era - born in 1962, so 19 when Divynals debuted this song. It is SO SO weird watching you guys "discover" all of our music that was such an absolute integral part of our lives. I find it hard to imagine that there are people in the world who have never heard the songs you have heard in Aussie Weeks 1 & 2.
Thanks for being here and checking our channel out. More soon!! Thanks G&A
I lived in Australia from 1981 to 1986, still listen to all those oz classics here in the uk, 🎸🇦🇺
I do hope at some point you circle back and take a deeper dive into Cold Chisel. There are so many great tracks to check out - Bow River, When the War is Over, Cheap Wine, You Got Nothing I Want, Saturday Night, Choir Girl, Flame Trees, My Baby.... the list goes on. There is enough quality there for you to dedicate a week.
I'd suggest checking out either Bow River (Live) or When the War is Over (Live) to wet your appetite.
Bow River should be on their list. I don’t feel they got a good taste of Cold Chisel either.
shhhhh wait
Shhhhh ...wait

She chucked a bottle of water over me back in 83.
The best live performance I’ve ever seen❤️
That is Holy water!

I was a teenager in Australia in the 80s
It was fabulous
I saw this band so many times & they never disappointed- such a powerhouse band with of course Chrissie dynamic on vocals & iconic schoolgirl uniform. Sadly missed
Thanks for being here and have a great weekend. Cheers G&A
I was teenager in the 80s. I'm always amused when people slagged the music from that decade. I remember that we had a great time rocking out to Aussie rock.
Thanks for being here and have a great weekend. Cheers G&A
I only ever saw Divinyls once (same venue I saw the Angels one time only) but they absolutely rocked. Supported by Joan Jett, as well, who was doing a little tour.
Week three? Yes please! The 90s was a magic decade for Aussie music so maybe we could take a peek at some of that. No idea what’s coming last on this week though. Could be almost anything.
And, it amazes me how much music can go with that cheesy aerobics clip.
Thanks for being here and have a great weekend. Cheers G&A
I remember doing an 18 hour shift and then instead of going to bed our neighbours said that the Divinyls were on in Brissie, so we got dressed up, went pub crawling and topped it off in the moshpit rocking out to Chrissie and the boys...then went back to work for another long shift. Those were the days. A week 3 Aussie week would be sooo easy, so a few suggestions - The Screaming Jets 'Better' or 'Helping Hand', Dragon "Rain", Noiseworks 'No Lies' or "Take Me Back', Divinyls again with "I Touch Myself" or 'Pleasure and Pain', Australian Crawl 'Boys Light Up', Mondo Rock 'Come Said The Boy'. Great critique again boys.
Thanks for being here and have a great weekend. Cheers G&A
I saw the divinyls live In the early 1980's & she had such a strong amazing presence on stage she was so awesome 👌
Next Divynls: Pleasure and Pain. More Aus 80's you should get into: Hoodoo Gurus, the Models, Painters and Dockers (Nude School or Die Yuppie Die)
Will check. Thanks for being here and have a great weekend. Cheers G&A
You are right about the quality of music in Australia during the 80s. I think their “toughness” is emblematic of how the Bands cut their teeth. All made their mark on the Pub scene where they learnt both their musicianship and showmanship. Not too many females broke through the glass ceiling back then but Chrissy Amphlett was something special.
The Divinyls!! Yes! Classic Aussie rock at its best right there!
Thanks for being here and have a great weekend. Cheers G&A
Only Lonely, Siren, Good Die Young, Love School, etc etc etc
They were great to see in the 80s in Australia. I was lucky enough to live in Sydney during the 80s and I got to see Divinyls many times from free on Manly Beach and Kings Cross to the State Theatre. Always a treat. Chrissie was key.
Chrissie and Mark had a love for early rock acts, so they released a few covers over the years, including The Troggs’ Wild Thing, The Easybeats’ I’ll Make You Happy, and Syndicate Of Sound’s Little Girl (Changed to Hey, Little Boy).
They were a rock act, for sure, but Boys In Town is the pumpingest one of the lot. I’d recommend pretty much any of their early releases, especially watching the videos to see Chrissie performing. Only Lonely, Science Fiction, Pleasure And Pain are all staples of rock radio here. I also like their version of Young Rascals’ I Ain’t Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore that they did for the Buffy The Vampire Slayer movie soundtrack, and once you’ve gotten through that then check out I Touch Myself if you haven’t already heard it.
As for the last Aussie Week song, I’m guessing Stevie Wright’s Evie Parts 1, 2, & 3. although there could be a ridiculous number of contenders.
Definitely recommend an Aussie Week 3. I’m happy to put a list together but I’m sure you’d have a bunch of suggestions anyhow.
Glad you liked it.
One thing I’d also recommend if you want to get an insight into how music developed here in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, a great documentary is one you’ll find on RUclips called Blood + Thunder: The Sound Of Alberts, which is really the genesis of acts like The Easybeats, AC/DC, The Angels (aka Angel City), Rose Tattoo, John Paul Young, and more. It definitely helped create and promote a raw, visceral rock sound and attitude in bands and pubs that helped define our Aussie rock sound.
Have a great weekend. Cheers G&A
I have recording of this, it was broadcast in two parts- part 1 Blood & part 2 Thunder
It must have been a Re-broadcast I got , My file dates are 2017 but the copyright in the video
is 2015. Yeah, a great bit of history.

Same, I managed to get a copy of it. Top stuff, a really good analysis of why a lot of that rock sounded like it did.
She was amazing in every way. I met her at a rock festival on the central coast. She started off as a little catholic choir singer. She was also the cousin of little patti who was an early 60s surf rock legend, so chrissy was ozrock royalty, and always will have a peice of my heart RIP
Chrissie, best female rock lead ever... no one was better.. gotta watch Elsie... the raw one
Thanks for being here and have a great weekend. Cheers G&A
Oh this was great. Yes for Aussie week 3 please 🙂
You got it! Thanks for being here and have a great weekend. Cheers G&A
Excellent choice Chris I’m sooo glad Chrissy rates a mention, hard driven bass lines and tight rhythm was our bread and butter.
And it gives me great joy to see you guys reacting and genuinely enjoying for the first time what we already knew and took for granted, we had the best Rock n Rollers!
The Divinyls had an essentials album if you’d like to delve down that rabbit hole.Cheers
Many thanks and yes, thanks Chris. Many thanks for being here and have a fab weekend G&A
I knew of the song, "I Touch Myself." Beyond that, nothing. So again, thank you for exposing me to new music. I really enjoyed this one. Thanks G & A!!
Glad you enjoyed it G! We loved it.
Sydney: Rock 'n' Roll city! This song was autobiographical for Chrissy, about her experiences growing up in Geelong. She inspired a lot of rock musicians such as Courtney Love. The '80s was a great time for rock 'n' roll in Australia. So many good bands, like you named. A large part of that was because of the TV show 'Countdown' that promoted a lot of Australian bands. Since then, we still have a great alternative rock scene, thanks to Triple J, the national public radio broadcaster that also promotes a lot of Australian bands. Since around 2008, the Northern Beaches, Sydney scene has produced some great bands: Sticky Fingers, Lime Cordiale, Ocean Alley, Dope Lemon. Also other Sydney bands like DMA's...We are definitely lucky that rock 'n' roll is still very much alive and well here! :)
Crissie Amphlett! God, she was so good... One day I'll write a story about her live on stage with a set of markers. My life hasn't been the same since. Great, and I mean, great choice! Although the live version of Elsie wouldn't be too shabby either.
Hi Capser!! Hope you're well
@@TheThamesmen I am! Thanks... About to send you lot a link 😎
Awesome seeing them live at local Sydney pubs. Must have seen them 20 plus times. Fantastic band. Rip Chrissie.
Divinyls are awesome. Rest in peace Chrissy

Can we take a moment and remember Vangelis? Died yesterday, or let's say heard of his death on the news yesterday. Chariots of fire still is probably the best film score written.
Thank-you. I saw a snippet on TV but it didn't register. I love his music. It was sooo unique.
Oh that's sad I didn't know that! Probably another victim of the covid vaccines...
I did - Look at the comments section and an early video we did featuring him..... I loved the Greek dude.
Pub rock rules!
Thanks for being here and have a great weekend. Cheers G&A
Sydney & Melbourne had a rock band culture and the cities rocked every Thurs, Fri & Sat nights in the 80s
Their whole list is worth listening to. Chrissy is much loved is Australia. Most red blooded boy had a 'thing' for her. Chrissy said her on stage persona was a different person to herself. But when in 'the zone' she owned it. I love Divinyls and more so, Chrissy,
Chrissy was also 1st cousin of another great Aussie female vocalist, "Little Patty". Both learnt to sing in the same church choir and both had gorgeous voices.
Chrissy Amphlett was also wonderful as Judy Garland in the Boy from Oz stage show. She unfortunately died from Breast Cancer - RIP Chrissy.
Thanks so much for being here and supporting us. Be well and have a fab day. G&A
I saw Divinyls live in the 80's. Chrissie was wild. What a voice, what a stage presence. What a loss. RIP Chrissie🕊️
She must have been something to behold live
You hit on the secret of Aussie pub bands, a driving rhythm section. The kick drum had to punch you in the stomach at the gig.
I worked in live rock production late 70's to early 90's. Worked on a lot of shows with Divinyls, they were awesome live, tight and crisp, so professional and a great show!
Cheers and thanks fellas.
P.S. Oh yes, Aussie Week three please! 😁
Rock on! Thanks so much for being here and supporting us. Be well and have a fab day. G&A
her fluro mic was her trademark
A week three of Aussie 80's pub rock
Why most overseas hasn’t heard of all the great music we had down here was the record companies at the time were more interested in promoting the talent they had - even getting the rights to some Australian songs and using them to promote their own talent. A classic example is John Farnham’s Your the Voice. The American head office of Johns record company felt the song would be a hit sung by some female band in the US ( no idea who they were but obviously it failed miserably) The UK did the same .Artists had to actually move to the US and the UK . It wasn’t till there was a bloke that came on the scene called Michael Gudinski that bands like INXS actually charted overseas without someone else singing their songs. It happens a little less now but at the time most of our artists in the 80’s and 90’s were stymied by the parent company they were signed with in both the UK and the US.
Absolutely 100% truth
Michael Gudinski founded Mushroom Records and promoted Aussie musical artists.
Thanks for being here and have a great weekend. Cheers G&A
A great choice of song again. Classic Aussie Rock at its best. 'Science Fiction' is another great track by them. You say what I've been saying for years the Aussies have created world class rock music much of which has never been heard outside Australia. Week 3 is a must for you guys!
Thanks for being here and have a great weekend. Cheers G&A
Such a natural talent, nothing fake about Chrissie or the band.
Haha some of us are still stuck in the 80's. All the 80's anthems come out every Australia Day and at most back yard BBQs
Not a bad place to be stuck. Thanks for being here and have a great weekend. Cheers G&A
That song came from an EP and the EP music was used as sound track on a film called Monkey Grip. That had about 4 singles taken from it as it was so good.I saw them live and they were pretty good. Blondies guitarist Jimmy Destri played with them after Blondie went in recess after Chris Steins illness.
Thanks for being here and have a great weekend. Cheers G&A
The 80s were the high watermark for Aussie music
You MUST watch the live performance of this song from the 1983 US Festival…bloody brilliant!
I knew the Guitarist, Mark McEntee - he used to be in a family members band - in the 70's he studied Jazz guitar at the Sydney Con - I never heard any of it in their music. I recall meeting him at the park one day where he was flying his remote controlled Aircraft. Chrissie used to freak out the young Teenage audience girls when she'd squat down on stage in her St Trinians School Girl dress and take a piss ... yes literally ... hahahaha hahaha all while the band was playing during a song. When ya got to go ... she was rough and ready.
Wow! So good! That track always leaves me wanting more…. It seems like it’s just taken off and it’s over… what a tease ;)

I use to sit on the steps at the front of my house with my radio and listen to this and more lol i think you should do a week three Plesae

You have only been scratching the surface. Try the Go-Between's "Head Full of Steam" or "Spring Rain", the absolute classic that is the Screaming Tribesmen's "Igloo", Mental As Anything's "The Nips Are Getting Bigger" or "live it up", the Dagoes "I do it for Mama", Skyhook's "Everybody Can Go Get Fucked", the Hitmen's "No Clue", the Radiators "No Tragedy" Ed Kuepper's "A Trick Or Two" or "Nothing Changes In My House", Ratcat's "The Killing Joke" or " That Ain't Bad", Radio Birdman's "Aloha Steve and Danno" and that's just scratching the surface too.
Chrissie's cousin was Little Pattie a 1960's surfie chick singing star - known for "He's My Blonde-Headed Stompie Wompie Real Gone Surfer Boy" and "Stompin' at Maroubra" [Mar- oo- bra] a Sydney beach, was a hit when she was 14. She was one of the singers who went to entertain the troops in Vietnam. Most people didn't know the connection between the two until after the Divinyls were big. And yes the whole world mourned Chrissie - their "I Touch Myself" was used in breast examination and breast cancer awareness campaigns all over. Have checked in an you two quite a bit but now my sub list is that much longer - have just added you because of your music knowledge and intelligent breakdown of artists and careers. Cheers from Oz gents!
Kool info. Thanks for being here and have a great weekend. Cheers G&A
Love your channel. The 80s was a golden era for Australian music - I was in the UK 89-93 and missed that 3rd sound after Brithish and US music. Hunters & Collectors, Icehouse, Hoodoo Gurus, Gang Gajang among others you have yet to discover and perhaps my favorite The Go-Betweens 'Finding You' from 2005 among my favorites or 'Bye Bye Pride' from the 80s
Thanks for being here and have a great weekend. Cheers G&A
Seriously growing up in the 80’s In Australia was the best ever. You could watch all these great bands at the local pubs.
If we'd had the world-wide connections we have today, a lot of Australian artists would have made a huge impact on the world.
I agree
Later on in life she worked in an antique shop came up n spoke to me I didn’t recognize her but I recognized bon Scott following me around like he did with others like the comment of his wife said he wasn’t interested in anyone else.
You must do The Angels, 'Take A Long Line" Huuuge Aussie band in the "80s. Your faces will melt.

I always thought that Chrissie Amplett was Australia's version of Suzi Quatro, both rockers. Suzi Quatro was in Australia so many many many times, it would have been great if they performed together - maybe they did.
Alex reference to Cell Block H was called Prisoner in Australia, in case you did not know. Why was the Title changed for the UK?
I think they changed it over there to avoid confusing it with the Patrick McGoohan series The Prisoner.
Yes Dal
Chrissie was the queen and Doc Neeson was the king RIP

I worked at Australia's biggest outdoor pub arena at the time Fishermans Wharf & saw so many Aussie & international bands live rehearsal then the concert Chrissie was flippin awesome yet collapsed on stage, did get to see her at Bombay Rock in their hey day & man she was so kool, her live version at Aussie made concerts we phenomenal dress was so short lol

Michigan J Frog I don't like the compilation discs. They always leave out too many gems.
This was the era I was in my late teens and early twenties. I watched Divinyls play at the arts factory in Byron Bay ( before Byron was ruined) Chrissy was awesome . I also saw Midnight oil and a band called the models play the same venue . Good times ! Definitely the best era for live music in Australia. I’m now 58 and still loving our bands from back then .

Glad i found your youtube page tonight, here in South Australia.. I do remember the Drummer " Richard Harvey " also played in the massive Super Group, The Party Boys... His Snare drum solo at 6:32 - 6:35 was a major part of the song for me, and even more so since i started to learn the Drums in 1985 a few years later.. Sad to just find out Richard passed away 19th June 2022.. The Chrissy Amphlett Biography is worth the read..

There is something strangely compelling about her performance. Absolutely want to see more
As a 17 yo boy who snuck into my local pub to watch the Divinyls sitting next to the stage imagine chrissy singing this song sitting on my lap. It happened and blew my mind.
Chrisy grew up in Geelong. Her first gig was when she was 17. She didn't have a costume to perform in, so she took to the stage in her school uniform. it went down a treat with the audience but not so much with the school. A true Aussie ledged.
Incredible, loved you Chrissie! A real hero to other girls who weren't perfect either! Real pleasure and real pain! 🥰👍
Damn the Divinyls are epic!
Week 3 is definitely a must. Too many to list & you’ll get plenty of suggestions in the comments I’m sure✌🏼
Their whole catalogue is first class
a truly hypnotic talent - this is one of my faves along with "human on the inside", "make out alright", and "I'm on your side" and "sleeping beauty".........they also did a superb cover of "ain't gonna eat out my heart"
And Science Fiction, and Back to the Wall ❤️
Chrissy grew up in ‘70s Geelong, and allegedly this song was inspired by the boys she pashed at the beach when she’d wag school & hitchhike to Torquay 😅
I’m happy to say I had the pleasure to see this incredible band many times Chrissy always put in 100% every time. The truth about Britain and America didn’t get to discover Aussie bands was mainly due to government control of media where local content was implemented So Australia missed out.
Divinyls: “Pleasure and Pain”, “I Touch Myself”.
“My Island Home” by Christine Anu is well worth a listen.
I Touch Myself (well yeah) but also another great Divinyls song.

Yes - please do a week 3! My list: Everlovin' Man by the Loved ones (they only had one album, but super super super influential), Because I love you by Masters Apprentices (hugely iconic Australian song); I hear motion by Models; Flame Trees by Cold Chisel; Baby Please don't go by AC/DC (the version played lived on Countdown - it made them overnight stars, you'll see why when you watch it); Black and Blue by Chain; Beds are burning by Midnight Oil; Sweet sweet love by Russell Morris; LIttle Ray of Sunlight by Axiom. But if you only do one of these, Everlovin' Man. Just ask Chris about Everlovin' Man (also ask him about ACDC's performance on Countdown).. There is not one other single song that sounds anything like it. It is the perfect intersection of pop / rock / blues. And THANK YOU for doing the Divynals. Chrissy was amazing. Hey Little Girl is a great fun.
Thank you for your support and thank you for the suggestions. We really appreciate this

We did own the 80s! We had these amazing bands and singers and most of them we could go to the local to catch their gigs. This is why Australia is the happiest place on Earth… and the beaches… we have THE beaches!
Listen to all of their stuff. Some great tunes
RIP Chrissie Amphlett. Saw them quite a few times in the Cross’ Piccadilly Hotel. Hands down the best frontperson of any band I have ever seen. Chrissie was the most intimidating person fronting a band, with her dark eyes under that fringe, you did not want her to look your way.
Just another song on the radio back then, but bloody good. Look at it now, awesome. Saw them at the pub, they were good. Yeh, I'm an Aussie. Like you said, a lot of great Aussie music back then. Just subbed, you guys seem alright, give ya a shot
