My fave band. thanks for the reaction guys and the selections Chris. Big shout out to George Ellis - the conductor in the Tantalised track. He scored all the orchestra parts for The Church tracks played at that gig, but has also scored and performed many other artist tribute gigs including, but not limited to: The Beatles, ABBA, Bee Gees, Queen, Bowie and Roy Orbison. And YES - that version of Tantalised is EPIC.
Wow guys, this was a treat. I know both songs but have never seen these versions. So, I was super impressed with the audio quality of Under the Milky Way, that must have been reengineered to get the sound and video quality to that level, magnificent. However, Tantalized, ... Alex said it: "that was a masterpiece", it's certainly a bit of a step from the original but I have never seen that performance before, and I am gobsmacked at how good it is. Just the way the orchestra carried the frenzied riff throughout the song was impressive. Chris, you have outdone yourself this time, thank you for giving that performance to the boys. Just awesome.
Always loved The Church but I was totally blown away by the bbbbbbbbonus track. What synchrony with the orchestra! They were almost feeding off each other in that frenzied incredible performance.
Hello. . Thanks, guys, for the reactions, love you both. This is my fav Aussie band!!! Chris, I love you heaps, you are the greatest.!!!! You went above and beyond expectations, just WOW!!
Growing up in Australia and listening to all these great Aussie bands/artists was a fantastic time, and that would have to be one of the best live performances ever. That’s saying something when you think of INXS, MIDNIGHT OIL, AC/DC, COLD CHISEL and don’t forget JOHN FARNHAM with some of their epic performances.
Got to see the Church at the Gov in Adelaide back in the 80's they are incredible live as you have just witnessed, they weren't appreciated enough here in Aus back then as they are so talented. Great reaction once again.
This was my jam growing up - We even dressed like Kilby. In some ways they are our Cure -- an alternative group who managed to sell a lot of records and get mainstream success.
The first time I saw The Church they were playing at Sylvania Hotel in Sydney in 1981. They were the support band for the Flowers (later Icehouse). Steve Kilby has great tone.
Hi guys TY for doing The Church, one of my fun exciting bands to see in the 80's for sure. Great songwriting and performances are what I recall of their shows. Love The Church and both tracks are winners! The Milky Way song reminds me of watching the Melbourne Arts Centre spire dazzle in bright colours at White Night about 7 years ago as this song was played into the summer night. This group, even though they sing about Australia, reminds me of the United States. The random mention of Memphis; on you tube there is a performance of their song Reptile in Minneapolis; so this song reminds me of Minnesota.🤷♂🤷♂ Great reaction guys!!
My favourite band of all time - Tantalized is from their 1985 album Heyday which was released while I was in high school and was the album that made me a convert. Depending on how they count them they have about 27 albums or so (the band considers some of their '80's EP's to be album status) and the output is consistently good - they only have 2-3 lesser quality releases in the catalogue. Steve Kilbey (singer, songwriter and bassist) is Australia's most prolific songwriter, with over a thousand published songs over a 40+ year career. Kilbey has a prolific solo career as well as multi-album collaborations that are full discographies in themselves - check out his Kilbey Kennedy collabs in particular. He's the sole remaining member of the original and 'classic' lineups (first drummer only lasted about a year and only appears on the first two singles and the first album). The classic lineup of Kilbey, guitarists Peter Koppes & Marty Willson-Piper and drummer Richard Ploog lasted about a decade from the 'Too Fast For You' double single/EP through their most popular period from The Blurred Crusade through to Starfish (Under The Milky Way) and the follow up Gold Afternoon Fix (although Ploog barely played on that, being replaced by samples of his own playing on a drum machine on most tracks). Jay Dee Daughety replaced him for the next two tours and album (magnum opus Priest = Aura - check out this album it will blow your mind! The band ran out of money and success by the end of 1992 and Koppes left and the band was officially a duo of Kilbey and Willson-Piper for the next two albums (Sometime Anywhere and Magician among the Spirits) although Koppes returned as a guest player on some tracks. Session drummer Tim Powles played on both albums and Koppes rejoined for the MATS and Powles was made an official member. This lineup lasted for another 14 or so years and was the lineup for the performance of Tantalized on the video. They released seven full 'official' albums (with some level of promotion and touring) and another five or so outtake/remix/soundtrack/jam albums (some of which are more interesting than the 'main' albums of that period - Check out Back With Two Beasts in particular). Willson-Piper left in about 2010/11 and was replaced by Ian Haug of Powderfinger and this lineup released a further two albums, before Koppes retired from the band at age 64 about five years ago, leaving Kilbey the sole owner of the name 'The Church'. He recruited Ashley Naylor from Australian band Even (also played for Paul Kelly's band and is a noted Australian session guitarist), and Jeffrey Cain - from American group 'Remy Zero', who Kilbey had made two previous collaboration albums with under the name Isidore went from touring instrumentalist to full member. This current lineup has released two concept albums around the theme of a washed up musician using a strange device called the 'Hypnogogue' to draw music directly from his subconscious, which has taken their music to another level - check out the video for the title track of the first album in the series 'The Hypnogogue' - it's a mind-bender and the visuals are great too!
Love this. You probably know Under the Milky Way from when you did your gap year here. It's played regularly to this day. It's also been featured in a few ads in the US since it was released. It was featured in a famous car ad there. It was also featured in the Opening Ceremonies for the last Melbourne Commonwealth Games (that is quite a magical version as it was with the MSO). It's also been in quite a few movies - the most famous of which is Donnie Darko (it's played in full across the party scene). It's a great song. They really are a fab band. They really do that post punk jangly guitar thing beautifully. Unguarded moment, I'm almost with you and Metropolis are also worth checking out. Metropolis has a similar feel to this one.
You mentioned Icehouse - would love it if you did some of their previous incarnation, "Flowers". Every track from their debut album is supreme new wave/ alt rock. "We Can Get Together," and "Can't Help Myself" were the ones that captured the early attention.
Those songs are on the icehouse album, before they adopted the name for the band and yep, they were a few of my favourites, as well as sister, fatman and walls.

Great to get back to Chris’s copious notes, the Thamesmen would not be the Thamesmen without their antipodean muse. Another Aussie band I have never heard of but yet more evidence that global distribution of music failed dismally until the invention of the internet. Having a couple of tracks also helped make a good introduction to the band and gave a smidgeon of the feel of those great focus weeks that you used to do. Great to see the whole team back working together and the channel picking up speed again. Keep pedalling chaps!
They really did have a rotten time with distribution. They had no UK label for most of the '80's and unlike most of their contemporary Antipodean artists, decided to remain in Australia instead of decamping to London. They got dropped by their US label after their first album (the label wanted them to release music similar to the Little River Band and they refused!) and dropped by their second US label after their fourth album - so it wasn't until they got dropped by their Australian Label - also after their fourth album 'Heyday' another masterpiece in their collection that they got a proper global contract with Arista that they got some momentum, but that only lasted a couple of years and then back into the indie wilderness they went...
The Church are still going, with Steve Kilbey as the only original member. They still have great players, though. I’m seeing them again in November. I think the version of UTMW here is from the gig I saw at the Enmore about 11 years ago where they played the whole of the Starfish album, then the whole of Priest = Aura, then the whole of Untitled #23. Great night. I recommend the versions from that gig of Aura, Chaos and Dome if you can find them.
I saw The Church Llive in a club in Montreal, late 80's or early 90's, I can't quite remember, but they were opening up for Echo and the Bunnymen. A classic roster mismatch as The Chruch absolutely blew away Echo! They actually had to come out for an encore, which is rare for an opening band. The crowd quickly thinned out once Echo and the Bunnymen took the stage. This is a great band, brings back memories for me.
One of my favorite bands and albums. There are only a few albums I’ve bought a couple copies on vinyl to have a backup of and this is one of them. Agree with George re: Icehouse
Came back to add that if you like The Church, you may very well like The The who are touring right now. Recommended songs “This is The Day” or “Uncertain Smile”
If you want to hear a great Aussie band that most Australians haven't even heard of, try Railroad Gin...A Matter of Time. Folky with lots of flute like Jethro Tull. They also did interesting covers of the Rolling Stones and Beatles. Do yourselves a favour.
Guys Guys Guys !!!! You have to revue Flash and the Pan " Hey St Peter" George Young [ Angus Young's older brother] and Harry Vander, music producer of legend.
the Thamesman with the long hair nailed it..when he was talking about how the song conjures the open road and open Australian skies and feeling of Austraya. Milky Way was a hit.
Like most of Church's output but the first six LPs are the best for me and Blurred Crusade means the most - still have my first press Aussie version (which I based the Discog entry on)
Two awesome picks. Thanks so much guys. Takes me back to my first year of uni. The Blurred Crusade was basically my life's background noise. Dare I suggest a reaction to another brilliant alt Aussie band from this era -- Died Pretty. "Desperate Hours" is one of their best and "Stops'n'Starts" is just a banger. Be a great double.
Alex, I can’t believe you hadn’t heard of The Church! The live version of Under the Milky Way is a bit lacking for me. It’s such a beautiful song and I wish the vocals had been a bit more prominent. That version of Tantalized was 🔥
Great covers of Under the milky way tonight, by Katie Noonan and also the late great Uncle Jimmy Little. classic song, something ethereal about it, which ties in with “the Milky Way” (star constellation)
Can you guys do a reaction to the black sorrows never let me go official video Can’t wait to see you reaction to Vika bulls voice Or gimme shelter with Tim Roger’s on the Aussie show Rockwiz
Gotta checkout, you took, priest = aura ( the album’s 2 opening tracks are awesome, reptile, unguarded moment was the early hit in oz,so so many great songs.
Under the Milky Way is on my playlist, so I hear it whenever I'm driving, which unfortunately meant that I was disappointed with the first performance. The lead singer has such a distinctive voice and I love the feeling and atmosphere it invokes, especially on the words where he's whispering. The second performance was amazing ❤
If you saw Donnie Darko, that might explain why Under the Milky Way sounds familiar. It was part of the soundtrack, playing when Donnie was wandering around the party at his house. Kilbey wrote it slightly off his neck after sneaking a doobie at his girlfriend's house and that it probably the best way to listen to it, esp the studio version with the insane E-Bow bagpipe effects. REM used the tech to different but equally arresting effect on E-Bow the Letter.
@@maryburke5423 Oh, I dunno. Marty's not an Australian citizen and Steve said 'I feel no allegiance. I don't feel like an Australian and I don't feel like an Englishman.'

Since I know that you guys had not migrated to the USA yet back in 1988, I can understand how "Under the Milky Way" might've escaped your attention, but it was an enormous hit here in the States, and big in Aus as well. I'm not super familiar with the band's other output, but "Tantalized" was good too.
Guys, please check out Ball Park Music. A great Aussie 5 piece rock band, still recording performing. Such a huge catalogue of beautiful & amazing works.!!
Can’t believe you did all those Aussie tunes and didn’t do this one too it was an eighties anthem in Oz and the bonus track is incredible You could do a whole week of Aussie ska bands or punk bands there’s been plenty of both
Hi George and Alex, further to your comments following this great reaction, Us Aussies have many Great Folk songs; you guys just do not realize! If you would like to react to them. We have songs like 'Up their Cazally", Slim Dusty with the song "Kokoda". But our greatest folk song groups I reckon is "hunters & Collectors" and Midnight Oil". You have to listen to "What's a Few Men" and "Under the Sun (Where I come from)" by H&C, of course Midnight oil you know about already.
I think we're lucky to have you guys! Keep up the great comedy. :) I can't see why Alex would stress Chris or anyone else out... I did know Under the Milky Way, I just can't tell you where from. Great song. The second one made me think a little bit of the Trans Siberian Orchestra. Both very good tunes!
Ok. Firstly, UTMY replaced The Killing Moon, which was the original opening track. Second….Depp is not in, nor does he have anything to do with the film. It’s Jake Gyllenhaal.
My sister-in-law’s big claim to fame is that she was in the same class as Steve Kilbey at Lyneham High. The Church are the best thing to come out of Canberra. Not an enormously high bar, to be fair. To be frank, this live version sounds a bit like the batteries on the cassette player have been left to go flat. Too many drugs in the 80’s, I think.
Yeah, live is great, but it's not always better, especially with iconic songs, was a little disappointed with this version tbh. The other one that always sticks in my memory was the version of Throw Your Arms Around Me that they watched, which was a very uninspiring rendition of that song, lol. There's a reason the original version of the song didn't really make an impact, so I didn't quite get the choice to showcase it.
try listening 2 milkyway recording, modern au classic. hvnt heard of tant, reminded me of v edges guitar style. independant band, did ver own ting, wldnt do comercial stuff vey were directed to do. got scruples, ungarded moment is worth a listen, ul prob recognise it.
To be honest, Church pretty much puts me to sleep, but at least I don't wanna turn them off. 😅 Never heard that tantalized, but I actually like that one and it woke me up again. That's a pretty mean guitar. 💖
I don’t remember what the vibey thing is called but I did like it…. It wasn’t better than the original solo though. I think the original guitar solo is where the song really takes off and it’s a shame that it was missing…
@@christhecurator Do the guys always want live? I generally prefer live, but some bands honestly just don't pull it off well, and it seems a shame to miss out on hearing great songs at their best. I must admit, I found this performance pretty uninspiring, and I love this song!
Its a pity Marty Wilson-Piper totally dismisses the Church these days. He wont even mention or acknowledge them on his blog. He and Peter Koppes are fantastic guitarists and worked brilliantly together. Saying that, The Church is still ongoing and producing fantastic music. Their latest album is excellent.
That was a bit shit! Why not send them the clip of when 'under the milky way ' actually came out. This version just doesn't have the 'kick' the studio/early version has. Disappointed
When will you be back to your schedule check every day but don’t miss plus but disappointed Looks like asking for new music Lightfoot. Janis Linda Uriah heap KD Lang singing crying at the Roy obisine sp tribute concert Ps do enjoy todays song.

The Church were a great band, but the one time I saw them live (at a one-day festival in 1984) was the worst live performance I've ever been to. The sound guys had the bass turned up to 11 and the drums and vocals down to 1 and their songs were pretty much unrecognisable. Split Enz, Hoodoo Gurus and Sandii and the Sunsetz were on the same bill and brilliant, so it was still a great day out.
The ‘88 Album ‘Starfish’ from ‘The Church’ is as Classic as any Australian Album, a must listen to.

The second track is how a rock band gains the respect of professional orchestral players.
Great choice, Chris.
He nailed it with that one
strings were rockn out- sweet!
Still love Unguarded Moment and Under A Milky Way
Reptile is another great tune (one of many) from them
If you want to hear a great Aussie band that most Australians haven't even heard of, try Railroad Gin...A Matter of Time. Folky with lots of flute like Jethro Tull. They also did interesting covers of the Rolling Stones and Beatles. Do yourselves a favour.
This is just the tip of the iceberg for their amazing catalague!
Guys Guys Guys !!!!
You have to revue Flash and the Pan " Hey St Peter"
George Young [ Angus Young's older brother] and Harry Vander, music producer of legend.
Internationally their sound is kind of thrown in with Echo & the Bunnymen and The Psychedelic Furs.
Do you mean that some American think that?
The second song was amazing - they must have carpal tunnel after that.
the Thamesman with the long hair nailed it..when he was talking about how the song conjures the open road and open Australian skies and feeling of Austraya. Milky Way was a hit.
That’s George who loves Australia
Like most of Church's output but the first six LPs are the best for me and Blurred Crusade means the most - still have my first press Aussie version (which I based the Discog entry on)
You're back! My favourite music reaction channel.
Wow, thanks!
@@TheThamesmen no worries mates. I mean it too.
That double dose was a real beauty!
And the music. Did you like that?
@@TheThamesmen The Church are very underrated,, so much talent! Take this new subs word for it you boys always bring the goods!!
That version of Tantalized was 🔥
I love it now!!!!!
Great covers of Under the milky way tonight, by Katie Noonan and also the late great Uncle Jimmy Little. classic song, something ethereal about it, which ties in with “the Milky Way” (star constellation)
Can you guys do a reaction to the black sorrows never let me go official video
Can’t wait to see you reaction to Vika bulls voice
Or gimme shelter with Tim Roger’s on the Aussie show Rockwiz
Gotta checkout, you took, priest = aura ( the album’s 2 opening tracks are awesome, reptile, unguarded moment was the early hit in oz,so so many great songs.
Under the Milky Way is on my playlist, so I hear it whenever I'm driving, which unfortunately meant that I was disappointed with the first performance. The lead singer has such a distinctive voice and I love the feeling and atmosphere it invokes, especially on the words where he's whispering. The second performance was amazing ❤
The studio version from back when is much better when they were young.
Tantalized should be a Bond Film Theme!
100%
Kilbey (singer) and Wilson-Piper ( guitar) were both born in England
And..?
@@maryburke5423 And that mean they're not Australians.
@@LukeDempsey-l3j pretty sure they are both Australian citizens and call themselves Australians. So, yes they are Australians.
@@maryburke5423 Oh, I dunno. Marty's not an Australian citizen and Steve said 'I feel no allegiance. I don't feel like an Australian and I don't feel like an Englishman.'
@@maryburke5423 Nah, Marty's never been an Australian citizen and Steve says 'I have no allegiance. I don’t feel like an Australian and I don’t feel like an Englishman.'
Try listening to a group called the waifs two songs 1gravey train 2 lighthouse they are brilliant you will enjoy them
It's an electric bow in the guitarists right hand.
Thanks you - Alex
M8, we need updates on Sonny & Skippy - what they up to?
Since I know that you guys had not migrated to the USA yet back in 1988, I can understand how "Under the Milky Way" might've escaped your attention, but it was an enormous hit here in the States, and big in Aus as well. I'm not super familiar with the band's other output, but "Tantalized" was good too.
Guys, please check out Ball Park Music.
A great Aussie 5 piece rock band, still recording performing.
Such a huge catalogue of beautiful & amazing works.!!
The guitarist was using an Ebow. As you say, it vibrates :)
Many thanks. Alex.
Can’t believe you did all those Aussie tunes and didn’t do this one too it was an eighties anthem in Oz and the bonus track is incredible
You could do a whole week of Aussie ska bands or punk bands there’s been plenty of both
Hi George and Alex, further to your comments following this great reaction,
Us Aussies have many Great Folk songs; you guys just do not realize!
Other great Aussie songs with great meanings are the band, "Moving Pictures" with their songs, "Bustin Loose", "Sisters of Mercy" and "Nothing to do".
Love a bit of Trans Siberian, hopefully get them on this Christmas!
this song was on the donnie darko movie with johnny depp
Ok. Firstly, UTMY replaced The Killing Moon, which was the original opening track.
Second….Depp is not in, nor does he have anything to do with the film. It’s Jake Gyllenhaal.
Nice hair George
Thanks! I think
These Cats played the Astra Hotel in South Bondi on a Monday night in 1979/80 and it was free entry. Fuck, get better!
Second best after the Falling Joys. 😀
@@Leftfield71 third best after Doug Anthony All Stars.
Or fourth best after Eric Bogle.
Surely I can’t be the only one who thinks this is Simon Pegg and Nick Frost
:)
Great song but I think their other hit The Unguarded Moment is even better
try listening 2 milkyway recording, modern au classic. hvnt heard of tant, reminded me of v edges guitar style. independant band, did ver own ting, wldnt do comercial stuff vey were directed to do. got scruples, ungarded moment is worth a listen, ul prob recognise it.
To be honest, Church pretty much puts me to sleep, but at least I don't wanna turn them off. 😅
Never heard that tantalized, but I actually like that one and it woke me up again. That's a pretty mean guitar. 💖
That second track was mind blowing. So good
@@TheThamesmen Sure was, loved it.
I don’t remember what the vibey thing is called but I did like it…. It wasn’t better than the original solo though.
I think the original guitar solo is where the song really takes off and it’s a shame that it was missing…
I think the sound guy didn't understand the song. It lost quite a bit from the subtleness of the studio version.
That's because the studio guitar solo was actually on a Synclavier, and I agree, it was very cool, but they sadly don't have one available live.
@@christhecurator yeah I just went back listened..nothing like a guitar DOH!
@@christhecurator Do the guys always want live? I generally prefer live, but some bands honestly just don't pull it off well, and it seems a shame to miss out on hearing great songs at their best. I must admit, I found this performance pretty uninspiring, and I love this song!
We do otherwise you'd have tto watch two middle aged me..... Sometimes we do do studio but its great to have something to Watch
Enjoyed the first song almost had a Pink Floyd sound at the beginning
Find the second tune was not to my music.
Great musician in their own right
Its a pity Marty Wilson-Piper totally dismisses the Church these days.
Hi Paige... We enjoyed it. We can't please all the people all the time but we try. Be well
@@paigeturner4765 Yes, both songs are a lot better on the studio albums.
@TheThamesmen oh no ! 🙊 I absolutely, wasn't having a dig at you. I just wish you could have seen the better version of UTMW. ❤
When will you be back to your schedule check every day but don’t miss plus but disappointed
Looks like asking for new music
Lightfoot. Janis Linda Uriah heap KD Lang singing crying at the Roy obisine sp tribute concert
Ps do enjoy todays song.
Glad you liked it. We are holding at one video a week to avoid burnout plus we both have a lot of other things going on currently. With more time we would do more!
@ no problem.
I’m guessing me sitting around
Enjoying the music. Not all of them but most
Funny I came in early back when there were more time for the two of you. The question are more about getting to listen to good music and your presentation
One for you
KDLang singing crying at the Roy Robinson appreciaron night
It will blow you away
Look up The Church “reptile” live
Will do. Thanks
Shoulda done the original studio version. This is a bit out of tune and flat...Bit of trivia...Was used in the soundtrack of Donny Darko...
Ha ha ha, those Russians! 😂
Such a fun group!
better version on youtube not best sound.
Hmm. Don't make comments that insult people from their countries. Might make you more friends that way...if that's what you want...
We did learn that lesson!
Should have listened to a version from the 80's the vocals would have been better.... this version of under the milky way is a bit meh
