    He briefly mentioned the rules of a shield are a little different as a left handed fighter. Being left handed myself, I have always wondered exactly what advantages and challenges it would present, as usually you are blocking heavier blows coming in from the shield side, but a lefty vs righty match up has those main attacks hitting from the sword side from both fighters. Would have loved to have seen him touch on that a little more.

    Very neat summary, but I disagree with some points, like preferring the small mace instead of a sword in a period where large shields were so common.
    People tend to overlook the fact that sword thrusts also pack blunt impact and can be aimed at head to toe from the same position, compared to the angle limited and telegraphed swings of a mace.

    I do a bit later period, but some things should aply to this too. 1) Accordingto my knowledge, his helmet is wrong. This type should be well fitted, and you wouldn't throw it away- you'd do that with a great helm, which is, obviously, bigger, to fit the skull helmet underneath, and a bit differently constructed. 2) there's currently a lot of experimentation with fitting chainmail more closely to the body. Pictoral evidence sugests that it was the case back in medieval, and those who already did it (two guys from germany, I can't remember their names) reported great increas in comfort and agility. This aplies especially to the coif- on most pictures, we can quite clearly see, that it's well fitted to the head, not loose like a hood. 3) more and more people here in bohemia is experimenting with not wearing a padded armor underneath their mail/plates. They substitute it with rough tunik or two, or a rough civilian coat for plates. This goes hand in hand with no. 2- reenactors often look like Mischelin mascote, thanks to our overdone padding, yet every piece of pictoral evidence sugests this wasn't the case at all. By pointing out these things, I don't wanna tear down this guy, his gear looks pretty decent, my intention is just to share most recent knowledge with a fellow reenactor.

    • @Locahaskatexu
      @Locahaskatexu 4 месяца назад

      The point about padding may just be more to do with modern Health and Safety standards for re-enactment fights though. Guys engaged in Buhurt certainly look like oversized man-tanks with all they've got on underneath. I would however conjecture that it may be that such padding existed at the time, and the choice of more or less padding is more about the trade-off between better protection but being unable to move very quickly or go with less protection and have better range of motion, and simply depended on the wearer's preference. Then again, conjecture.

    • @jankopransky2551
      @jankopransky2551 4 месяца назад

      @@Locahaskatexu I was refering to reenactors, not HMB. There certainly are trade offs given by the nature of us being modern people not actually wanting to kill each other, and buhurt is extremely full of them, but reenactment doesn't have to be. Because again - evidence we have strongly suggests they were overall willing to trade less protection for more mobility. And our experiments suggest this was enough and is enough even for us today. Even the weapons we have tend to be bigger and tougher than the originals.

    • @eldorados_lost_searcher
      @eldorados_lost_searcher 5 лет назад +1

      That's the idea, shifting the weight of the lower half of the armor to the hips. However, everything else is concentrated on the shoulders.

This has enlighten my understanding of many pieces of the clothing worn. Good grief, the knights must have been extremely well conditioned and in excellent form. When I first tried making a long-sleeved mail shirt (commissioned by a friend) I added three expansion rings on either side of the elbows, I think set every-other row, to create a pocket that the elbow fit into when bending the arm. I also set the pocket a little further down the arm from where the elbow was (I think just made the sleeve a couple of inches longer above and below the elbow), so when the wearer brings his whole arm forward, the elbow still fits into the pocket and the sleeve doesn't slip too far from the wrist, exposing it (I also added a lace to cinch up the wrist).

      It was common among most knight to wear a surcoat. Apart from the shield and a standard, the coat was an important item to display the colours of your house and you sigil. Moreover, while modern uniforms did not exist during the medieval times, surcoats were used to signify the company you belong to. If the colours of the captain of your company or group on the battlefield had lots of red and blue, you surcoat had to have it to - it made organization easier. (Not all armies did this, though. Also, this was something that was done towards the end of the high middle ages until the rennaisance and later. The english and french definitely, otherwise I don't know))

    Early-mid 13th century*. Ventail needs work, the coif is too high on the brow and perhaps some minor tailoring is needed on the hauberk. Not sure about the vented gambeson, perhaps done in warmer climates such as the Holy Land. The armpit/shoulder generally being a very good spot for a lance. Aside from that, nice stuff.
    Also if you're struggling with removing your hands from maille mittens, try a horizontal slit on the bend of your fingers.

    Very nice armour, the armour in the video would have been given to a lowly castle or town guard, they could not afford a suit of armour, only nobles could. In, battle legions of men would wear this basic protecton and have been lead by one or two fully armoured knights perhaps. Important to know is that a knight would have an extremely muscled and toned body under the armour, a nobleman would undertake excessive exercise and body training regularly, wearing the suit over time as well as frequent movement adds extra weight and exhaustion so a body needed to be at peak fitness. In these sense, many movies and so on depict a knights body accurately. Modern military and excessive workout training take inspiration from the ancient workout routines

    Not an expert on armour but pretty good engineer, why wouldn’t a knight use a rounded helm to avoid a blade catching the edge and lodging into the bucket?

    • @antivalidisme5669

      Very good question and indeed helms like "Bascinets" or even before some kinds of rounded great helms appeared soon after this period and were way more efficient at letting blows glancing and not doing too much damage to your brain, specially concussion one and trust me you should NEVER underestimate concussion damage as Ed underlined! But in the early XIIth century things were different and they hadn't embrace the concept though they quickly learned!

      Honestly, from what I've heard, the flat top helmet was from the German school of thinking at the time which was make the helmet as thick as possible and cover as much as possible rather than other schools of thought like Mediterranean which preferred more open and rounded helms. It died out very quickly because a rounded helm as you stated is far better as opposed to a flat top where all the energy of a hit is absorbed into your neck.

      If you're on a horse, there isn't much that can hit you from above that you can't block.
      So at the time they developed this helmet it most likely made sense for them.
      Although later on most if not all knightly helms were domed/rounded.
      Engineering back then had to start somewhere too haha
      Good question though.

    • @solblumia2108
      @solblumia2108 5 лет назад +1

      The Knights did have rounded helmets before this (Nasal helmet) and the bucket/pot helm that would eventually evolve into the great helm would then be rounded later on. In the late 12th Century both the new pot and older nasal helms would still have been in use. Regardless even if the blade caught the edge I doubt it could defeat the helmet but probably break the wearer's neck.

    Your shield. When worn on the back .... you have it upside down. The long strap or 'guige' should still be strung over the shoulder and neck in the frontal combat position to take its weight, whilst the other two straps for elbow and hand are being used. I suspect your hauberk needs higher slits at front and back if you want to either ride or run!

      @dikkeroege 5 лет назад

      You need the padding to deal with blunt damage. Even under plate armor light padding (Aketon) was still used. A mace (or any type of heavy weapon really) could disable you in one blow without it.

      @@dikkeroege btw, under plste armour you don't use padding. Perhaps a little but during tge XIV century but during the XV and XVI century you use a doublet. It has a few cm of y thiccness to make it more comfortable but it's not padding, and definetly not an aketon.
      Otherwise it would get extremely hot, and unnecessarily heavy. Also, take a look at museum extants, you'll see the armours are too thin and close fitted as to allow any padding underneath it.
