Its awesome that Jason knows about the history and has the personal insight of actually being practiced in the fighting style of the knight. Such a great mix of knowledge and personal understanding. All historians should try and learn the skills from the cultures that they are knowledgable about.
Great video, thanks. Many years ago in the 1970/1980s as a police officer we did 'riot training'. One of the exercises was with the Mounted Branch (police horses). We, the officers on foot, were lined up with linked arms and we had to practice opening up in the middle to let a row of mounted officers through to charge at the 'rioters'. I can tell you that was scary! The two officers in the middle had to un-link arms and then each side of the line had to move quickly aside to get out of the way and let the charging horses through. I can imagine how frightening it must have been to have them charging at you!
Men-at-arms absolutely did use lances two-handed in certain situations. The treatises describe and depict the use of lances in this way. Gripping with two-hands allows you to overpower your opponent's lance using superior leverage. There was actually a lot of feinting and parrying going on with lances. Similar to a swordfight, only at a combined closure speed of 40+ mph. Matrix-level shit.
MrChyort fighter pilots are the knights of modern times. Highly educated, extremely expensive to equip, joust using advanced weapons technology, and are dominant over most single targets on the battlefield

You just winned me for your channel! Seeing you doing training like this I come to think about how immensely accurate the horse fight scenes in my favorite films of LOFTR really were. Impressive!!! Thanks for the video and showing and explaining to us how it's done! 🙏😍
I believe it was William the Marshal who wrote that the best possible lance hit was to lower and lock the lance the *instant* before impact. Since he beat so many other knights, that probably meant few people did such a thing (especially since, as Jason points out, you can keep the lance fairly level at the horizontal while charging). Also, the longbow wasn't really a threat to the armored *knights.* It was a threat to their barded horses.

It got so ridiculous that if I wanted to turn to the side where I had the lance, I'd have to wheel him around all the way to the other side. Funniest part was when I had to "charge" between two female warriors for a photo, without actually hitting them but close enough that it would look like I was. Our pleasure, it's nice to get interesting comments like yours. I've worked with some well known actors who have not realised how hard riding actually is, especially trying to hit set positions for a shot.
What's cool about this is he talks as if we are still using these weapons and tactics. I feel like i could watch his videos and be the best medieval soldier
I always prepare for the battlefield with a great big pot of coffee, orange juice and an American style Breakfast. That gets me going. And of course just because I may die, I also tend take a bottle of champagne with that, so I am pretty buzzy in that nice old Winston Churchill way when I go to polish my armour. That on the other hand tends to rather wear me out and so far I have missed the actual battles, due the inevitable and overwhelming need to suddenly have a bit of a kip, what with all the commotion and sweaty work. So I guess am more of a veteran of many great breakfasts really. A knight of the brunch table.
Thank you for making these videos! I haven't seen most of them yet, but I am reminded of a quote from Leo Frankowski-- that weapons (especially a lance) are energy- concentrating devices, while armor is an energy- distributing device. A thousand pounds plus of horse, two hundred or so for rider and tack and armor, at maybe 20 mph? at impact, concentrated into less than a square inch of lance tip... makes me happy not to be a foot soldier
Thank you so much for these videos! I like how you let the viewer "behind the curtain" so to speak. For a future vid, is there a way you could show a group of knights in a full cavalry charge? The logistics may not make that feasible, but it's a logical next step from showing the training of an individual knight to how knights fought together. The liability insurance costs alone may not let you do it, but I think it would make a great video!
I really can't wait to be able to watch this with my Grandson, (he is only 3) I loved Medieval history at school and this series is amazing, thank you so much for posting
wow thank you for this insight. the missile comparison really helped me understand the role of knights. it reminds me of how iv head of fully equipped and trained knights on foot being compared to the tanks of that age.
Very nice analysis of training both knight and horse. I do wonder though if armour (especially barding on the horse as well) would actually slow the charge down from its weight, even despite the articulation still allowing full movement.
Amazing Channel, I just binge watched an unhealthy amount of your videos and already looking forward to seeing more. Thank you and Keep up the great work!
I think this is my favourite medieval channel right now. There are many, but this one has very good production quality and also I have never seen horses ont the other channels.
Back in the day when I did my military service they taught the drivers to hold the thumbs along the edge of the hands so they only gripped the steering wheel with the fingers, not with the thumb. The reason being that if they are driving in the terrain and drive over a big obstacle the shock would be enough to break the thumbs if they had the thumbs over the steering wheel. Might knights have done the same with the lance to avoid broken thumbs when holding the shaped handle? That edge would probably smack your hand regardless, but not as bad as breaking the thumb at least.

They also do a fair bit of mythbusting, which is always nice. So, yeah, thanks for the videos :)
Nice
@@kylereece1735 Yeah it's not a bad life ...
whynottalklikeapirat yeah
Well said
@@isaiahkoufos3573 Someone had to say it.
I just found this in 2020 this dude is amazing!
"I've TRIED to be hit on the back of the head"
Yes or maybe good reenactment, full battle or just a part of it, even if u showing us a good one that u know or had seen
Interesting concept, maybe sca people would be interested if given mention in the credits.
I really can't wait to be able to watch this with my Grandson, (he is only 3) I loved Medieval history at school and this series is amazing, thank you so much for posting
glad you like it, hello to your grandson.
Googled "how to deliver couched lance damage in mount and blade"
This came up. Im not complaining
Göktuğ Manas looked up mount and blade too 😂
As a lover of history and a writer, thank you. These are the most helpful and interesting videos available.
Glad I found this channel! The explanation is really detailed!
wow thank you for this insight. the missile comparison really helped me understand the role of knights. it reminds me of how iv head of fully equipped and trained knights on foot being compared to the tanks of that age.
well, very informative as many yt channels there but also you show practical skills and that is AWESOME. Great great job!
How come I only find this channel now? This is the best channel on RUclips period
That is one beautiful horse.......also admire the grey Spanish in one of your videos
Fascinating stuff. Going to watch more of this fellow.
thanks!
Very nice analysis of training both knight and horse. I do wonder though if armour (especially barding on the horse as well) would actually slow the charge down from its weight, even despite the articulation still allowing full movement.
This is going to come in handy at work on Monday
I can't come here without learning something I didn't know
Amazing Channel, I just binge watched an unhealthy amount of your videos and already looking forward to seeing more. Thank you and Keep up the great work!
Imagine if there were a TV channel that went over various aspects of history?
Just got a letter from the King. Thank God for your channel!
You need a patreon or something, your content is amazing!!
I'm thinking about that.
Im in love. The medieval period is my field of study. Fascinating.
1950: "in 2020 we're going to have flying cars!
2020: Guy on a horse in full knight armor...
Can we just take a moment to appreciate Mr. Kingsley for travelling back in time, so that we don't have to. 👑
Hey, did someone notice this knight is wearing jeans and there is a cellphone inside his pocket !
Haha
Liked and subscribed !!!! 🛡⚔️
I think this is my favourite medieval channel right now. There are many, but this one has very good production quality and also I have never seen horses ont the other channels.
Jason: "The most deadly thing a knight could face was ranged weapons."
Pikemen: "Am I a joke to you?"
In truth, the least deadly thing a knight could face was ranged weapons.
@The Hoplite Yes, they could charge.
The Hoplite archers mate, archers.
The Hoplite yeah
Crossbows? I heard those meant the end of the knight era?
Back in the day when I did my military service they taught the drivers to hold the thumbs along the edge of the hands so they only gripped the steering wheel with the fingers, not with the thumb. The reason being that if they are driving in the terrain and drive over a big obstacle the shock would be enough to break the thumbs if they had the thumbs over the steering wheel. Might knights have done the same with the lance to avoid broken thumbs when holding the shaped handle? That edge would probably smack your hand regardless, but not as bad as breaking the thumb at least.
"A knight in armor is like a missile."
