You should use Vaseline only to prime oil pumps because it has a melting temp of about 115 degrees F. Some high temperature greases may never melt at engine temperatures and can clog an oil passage. As bad as Permatex silicone in your engine if it's high temperature wheel bearing grease or something. Nice work on this engine!

Two questions: if you loosen the block bolts do you still need a special puller tool to get the pump out or will it just slip out? And if new nuts are not available can you re use them with sealer around them?

Brother Slade I would just like to bring to your attention what might be called "a discrepancy of information" on the final assembly of the gasket installation. The outer most gasket should be mounted dry...and here is the reason for that.
You will notice the pump body has an annular groove machined into it, This is a weep passage to carry oil back into the pump should the gasket fail. You will also notice that there are 2 holes in the paper gasket, they are to allow the wept oil to travel from behind the gasket.." in the weep passage" back into the pump.
By using gasket goo you block the weep passage and the weep holes.
    Lawrence

    • @SladesVWBeetle
