Awesome look man… my question is on a external cooler like how does the oil work as far as how much more oil do you put in the motor with the cooler and if it sits for awhile does all the extra oil drain into motor and puts to much in motor at start-up…. Can you make a video or something explaining how this all works
I’ll do my best to explain it. Video wise it’ll be a bit before I can get to it. Additional oil will depend on line length, oil cooler size and other factors. However you’re looking on average of an additional quart of oil. You still fill it to the same mark as before. With the oil thermostat the oil doesn’t drain back into the case when the car is off. They also make an oil check valve if need be to prevent oil from flowing back into the case. When the cooler was on the other bug, it was under the package tray and I never had an issue. Never had a drain back issue and always had instant oil pressure at start up. Hope that helps.
I am really enjoying this build thanks for sharing the progress. I am curious about what you said in the video, are you switching the ground from the relay through the temp switch, or the ground of the fan?
Glad you’re enjoying it and I appreciate you being here! The fan will receive power from the main switch panel which the power is supplied through the main box which every circuit has a fuse and ready. Therefore I can run the power straight to the fan, the temp switch will provide the ground to the fan when it goes over 180 degrees then the fan will come on.
I'm hip to the heat down here (gulf coast) did you think about two diagonal cuts and folding the metal down and back against it self for more strength with maybe enough left over to act as tubing support
Oh yeah, you’re very familiar then! Seems like a lot of people have had a rough, hot summer. Sure hope it breaks soon! No, I didn’t think of that and honestly if I would have needed to add shorts that would have been a great idea!
Looks sweet! Always dug the volksrod look, Just mounted a oil cooler for my turbo 2110, need to replace the lines feeding and returning from the cooler and was curious what kind of rubber hose your using? Nice job👍🏼
I'm not experienced with these approaches but any chance you might need a sun shield on that black oil cooler so it doesn't cook the oil from the Florida sun?
Good thinking but it’s not necessary at all. The oil only flows through the cooler once it reaches 180 degrees and you’re usually driving so air is going through it or the fan is on. I don’t expect it to be an issue at all but time will tell.
So, no regrets after a year except for the edge did get a little crack in the wing due to ever so slight flexing. I’m sure beating it off road didn’t help lol I put a piece of aluminum bar from left to right to stiffen it up and it’s been great since. That’s a 72 plate cooler that came with a fan.
@@VWJawbreaker Ok Thank you for the quick response, and I do both on and off roading so ill be bracing it up when I put cooler in wing. and maybe go with a little smaller cooler. only running and 1904cc.
@@ethanhaas1100 absolutely! I try to reply within a timely manner. You could go with a smaller cooler but I wouldn’t go bigger than a 72 plate in that wing. Personally I’d rather have a larger oil cooler with an oil thermostat vs too small of a cooler. The fan doesn’t come on unless it’s needed.
Does your fan come on ever? My motor has a 72 pass cooler and fan but only once on a super hot day I was lugging it and then in a drive through it came on for 30 seconds then off. I test it from time to time and it does work just seldom gets over 180 degrees
I am I am in the process of beginning to install the same oil cooler in my car. I need help determining the size of the feeding the goes into the radiator because I want to use my.8A feedings could you text me the size of the fitting goals in the radiator also the two fitting that you use in the block and in the pump I need to know where can I purchase them great job on your car really like what you did. Thank you Chuck from Chicago. How are you? Send you pictures of my project so
I ran 1/2” hose from the engine to the oil thermostat to the oil cooler and back to the engine. I do have a fittings on the hose and it’s 8an fittings. You just need to determine if you need 3/8 to 8an and or 1/2 to 8an. My oil cooler and thermostat used 1/2 to 8an and the engine I believe used 3/8 to 8an.
The oil thermostat keeps 90% of the oil in the main loop and out of the external oil cooler and opens at 180 degrees. The external oil cooler fan doesn’t turn in till 200 degrees. Normal running around the temps stay 180 or below. Long highway runs at 65-70, temps stay around 210 max when it’s 95 degrees outside. When I’m driving I keep the external fan off on my dash switch panel. I don’t think I’ve had to turn the fan on once. This is the same engine and external cooler setup I ran in jawbreaker, my other bug for 3 years before I pulled it out to put in this bug.
It’s solid enough that I don’t need to brace it. If I feel it needs bracing down the road I’ll add some suppers to the rear bumper that will eventually go on.
Oh absolutely! It would be overkill to be completely honest. This 1/2” line is rated for like 200-250 psi which is way more than this VW engine produces.
Question, anyone use the "Hot Dip Stick" oil temp monitor that flashes your oil pressure light at 225 deg +? Just ordered one, do not have a temp gauge, hoping it's a cheap easy way to know if it gets hot?
I used one years back, they are a good tool to use to keep an eye on things. Just keep your stock dip stick to check the oil and go off of those marks and not the ones on the temp dip stick.
I have and use one on my car. You can calibrate them to come in sooner than 225. Mine will flicker at 190°F but my fan comes on before that. I like a clean dash, so I have no gauges except a tach the oil pressure warning light, connected that sensor, and my gen light.

Nice job👍🏼
Thanks man, I appreciate that.
I used the Derale 1/2” oil hose. Been using that for about 4 years without an issue. Holds up very well.
Blue Popsicle 😉 Tommie
Thanks Tommie, I appreciate ya sir!
Love the build graet car build
Thank you, I appreciate that!
What are your thoughts on the Empi oil cooler kit that returnes oil into oil relief on pulley side?
I’m not a fan of that style return. Imo, you’d be better off with an in and out oil pump from CB.
Hey that's a great idea. would you still recommend putting it in the wing now that's it been awhile? And what size fan and cooler size is that?
So, no regrets after a year except for the edge did get a little crack in the wing due to ever so slight flexing. I’m sure beating it off road didn’t help lol
I put a piece of aluminum bar from left to right to stiffen it up and it’s been great since.
Blue popsicle !!!!
I appreciate you being here!
If you still read these or anything, what all did you use for this set up i have a wing aswell and it gets toasty in the bay
@@nixbar6546 I’m not sure what you’re asking, I covered everything I used in the video.
Does your fan come on ever? My motor has a 72 pass cooler and fan but only once on a super hot day I was lugging it and then in a drive through it came on for 30 seconds then off. I test it from time to time and it does work just seldom gets over 180 degrees
When the setup was in jawbreaker the fan would come on when it was super hot in the middle of the summer. Other than that, it rarely came on.
Nice, I like it 👍
Thank you sir, I appreciate you being here.
So what is the temperature now with you oil thermostatic cooler ?
The oil thermostat keeps 90% of the oil in the main loop and out of the external oil cooler and opens at 180 degrees.
The external oil cooler fan doesn’t turn in till 200 degrees.
Normal running around the temps stay 180 or below. Long highway runs at 65-70, temps stay around 210 max when it’s 95 degrees outside. When I’m driving I keep the external fan off on my dash switch panel. I don’t think I’ve had to turn the fan on once.
This is the same engine and external cooler setup I ran in jawbreaker, my other bug for 3 years before I pulled it out to put in this bug.
run a brace top and bottom tig weld it,front and back
It’s solid enough that I don’t need to brace it.
If I feel it needs bracing down the road I’ll add some suppers to the rear bumper that will eventually go on.
Think high pressure hydrolc lines would be fine for oil lines?
Oh absolutely! It would be overkill to be completely honest. This 1/2” line is rated for like 200-250 psi which is way more than this VW engine produces.
@VWJawbreaker got a 96 plate cooler for mine, now I'm nervous about placement 😬 I'll make room
@@campervanbug7658 you’ll get it sorted out, just don’t over think it too much.

Thank you Annie!!
@@VWJawbreaker Great info, ty
@@MAGAisacult absolutely sir!
I have and use one on my car. You can calibrate them to come in sooner than 225. Mine will flicker at 190°F but my fan comes on before that. I like a clean dash, so I have no gauges except a tach the oil pressure warning light, connected that sensor, and my gen light.
Ooops, I try and keep politics out of my VW family....forgot the name and photo.
hahaha @@VWJawbreaker
Blue Popsicle don’t stay Ice Ice Baby when it’s hot out.
Lol, maybe the ice would help cool everyone down for 13 seconds 😂
Appreciate you being here.
I don't know if this car can get any cooler. Also it's 68 degrees today in N.H. Darn I don't have any blue popsicles in the freezer. LOL
I really appreciate that man, I’m happy with how the vision is coming together.
Enjoy that weather, a lot of people everywhere are having hot spells!
