It sounds like his lungs are coming out of his throat when he screams, you can hear the passion. Also am I the only one who likes his “voice cracks” Thanks for the likes✌🏽👍🏽
when you hear the verses of Something in the Way . . . without effects . . . if you close your eyes . . . you can hear his breath and his natural voice and it seems Kurt is in the room with you
that's actually probably because he recorded this in the control room after getting frustrated with it not sounded the way he liked.. it's just him playing it on guitar on a couch with some mics set up around him. to me it just shows how talented of a singer he was as well as well prepared.. he could sound great whispering the lyrics.
Gives me goosebumps. His voice is unlike any other vocalist I’ve ever heard. It’s so rugged and melodic and raspy and pretty all at the same time. Just his voice (without any instrumental backings) is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard.
Kurt Cobian was absolutely a fucking amazing vocalist - The perfect example of a true rock vocalist. Perfect power control, hits every note, messes with the rhythmic delivery in a way that adds character, and makes it all sound perfectly natural.

Listen to the Something in the Way track. Imagine Kurt laying down in the studio and singing. Butch Vig, the producer got a mic and put it up to Kurt's mouth and recorded the song.
The power and the pain in his accapello voice is so STRONG God I miss Kurt .What if,think about the music he would be making.RIP Kurt missed but NEVER forgotten
There has been enhanced vocals etc since a long long time ago.. even 50's music I can hear some early chamber reverb on vocals etc. The only thing you can hear on Kurt's voice is compression, eq, reverb, and delay. Standard on most vocals in different amounts at different times. It's not a rule of thumb but it's widely used on most vocals. You can hear multiple tracking also which helps to thicken the vocal track. It's very common.. But no auto-tune here, which is widely used today and leaves music sounding less musical and too perfect.
Danny Mecanovic Cool! You can really hear the different effects on his voice when you only have one earbud in. I personally don't like the effects all that much. Why do they include them?
When you sing in a studio vocal booth the room is very dry. There is usually no natural reverb, the walls are padded right up. When the drums are recorded they generally get recorded in a larger room with many microphones so natural reverb is captured. When you don't have any reverb on a record it can tend to sound stale and clinical. If you were to watch nirvana or any band you would experience natural reverb from the place they were playing in and you would receive a different amount depending on where you were standing. Adding reverb after recording helps gel all the sounds together. They might send the guitars, vocals and drums to a reverb effect to give the illusion of them being recorded next to each other or in the same room. But it's a matter of personal taste with the mix engineer and maybe the band and producer. You hear some tracks are very dry compared to others like 'Something in the way'. The vocal is very dry compared to many of the others. They wanted the effect that Cobain was right next to you. The more dry a sound is the more forward it seems, the more reverb used and you get the perception the sound is coming from further away. The 80's were a time when we used a ton of reverb and delay and when the 90's rolled around you notice the absence of the same amount of reverb and delay. Today we tend to use more reverb again and sadly also auto-tune. Today the average band can cut up their song on the computer and edit it to perfection which is not really a real performance anymore. ;)
why have you clipped/ saturated the audio? I've got these multi-tracks as well in good quality and these sounds like they've been bit-crushed in comparison
I wrote the same comment before I saw yours. You're right, it's a shame that the tracks were clipped. I wish I could hear them without being clipped! You wrote this 3 months ago, it says. If you see this, do you still have the tracks? Can you post them somewhere, where I could hear them?
@@andrewoid4711 dude Kurt barely had a bad live performance vocally. His vocals remained consistent until his death. Laynes voice started giving in near the end. Had some pretty rough live performances.

How can such an artistic and innocent looking guy like kurt have such a powerful voice.... I get mad just reminding myself that he's gone and couldn't expand all of his talent!
its because its technically still part or something in the way but because of the way its tracked you wouldnt be able to get a master original to single the vocals =/
Lol ik he was using a effect on his vocals lol..... Ik he has Dave doing backup, but when he screams he's definetly got a chorus type effect going on..... It'd be impossible to match that voice anyway but it's cool to hear the effects lol.
I don't think that there's an effect on his vocals (except delay and reverb). There's a video that you can find here on RUclips where Butch Vig (who recorded Nevermind) talks about recording the songs. At some point, he talks about asking Kurt to add a second vocal track but Kurt didn't like the idea. So, to convince him, he told him "You know, John Lennon did this sometimes" and that made him change his mind! Sometimes, he would just say "Let's do it again, just to have a 2nd track, just in case" but he kept both tracks on the mix. When he's saying all this, at the same time, he's playing the tracks and you can hear one track with vocals, then a 2nd track and it's the mix of these tracks together that makes it sound like a chorus effect.
