I've been looking for this exact information for years as a singer and never could really find the right info on how to do it properly without hurting yourself, now I've finally found it. You are a gift from god. lol thank you man.
Thank you SO much for this video. I've always wanted to pull off Kurt's kind of raw scream but thought it was impossible. I don't have a clue about algorithms either, man. Subscribed!
Watching nirvana perform meat puppet songs with the meat puppets was actually the thing that made me want to start finding out how to sing those kind of “folk” style but but watching Kurt it also made me think about incorporating that clean mixed voice sound into it. It makes it sound like your pouring so much heart into it I love it
The point about Kurt being so playful with his voice is such a key part of what made his sound so great. What's amazing is he was so playful and even goofy sounding sometimes but it still hits with a severe and serious impact like nothing else
Well said! The passion, and courage for him to be so playful and vulnerable with his performances made him such a special treasure... one of a kind! Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment!!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
For me what's got me closer to Kurt's vocal tone is doing impressions. I nailed a Macho Man Randy Savage impression dead on, and from there was able to turn it into hyper compressed voices like James Hetfield, Dave Mustaine, and M Shadows. Kurt's tone is not as hypercompressed as theirs, so it takes a little more to dial it in properly.
Indeed! Great points! I've done impressions all my life since I was a child, so that's why I still like to manipulate my voice to get different sounds like other singers... so much fun! Glad to hear you have had success doing the same - enjoy!
Yup! After I heard that, I thought - WOW, there must be something too that! Hurt like HELL for the first few times, until I learned to control it... once you dial in the "sound to pain ratio" it's ALL GOOD! 😂💗 🤘😎🤘

Hey Jim, the last couple weeks I've been finding Kurts technique!!!! I was finding it for awhile once I started learning head voice ( I've been using 99% chest voice for 20 years lol) so learning head and mixed voice recently and there's another higher placement to add grit, so I've leaned into that higher grit or distortion along with the yodel flip and I finally stumbled upon part of his technique ❤ I know I have a long way to go but obviously I don't wanna sound exactly like him. But adding some of his ways of using my voice has opened up new ideas for my own voice. Thank you for doing this video🤘

true he smoked, but many singers smoke and don't fry their voice... Kurt actually had naturally good technique for rock and his voice was not fried (you can tell when you hear him speak)... that said, he died at 27yrs old, so maybe prolonged singing like that would have destroyed his voice. Sadly we'll never know

Put it this way, I would love to be able to sing like this but . Let’s get real he is singing like this because he has so so much pain behind him and behind him again like you wouldn’t believe. So what I’m trying to say is the pain he feels and buries deeper and deeper brings out the pain vocals we are hearing now. It will never be matched ever. Just like Jimi Hendrix and his mind blowing guitar solos. It will never be matched ever haha
I just want to be half a percent of the amazing Kurt was, I’m sure he would say something like be yourself or I’m already amazing because he was a kind dude but he seriously has the coolest voice ever.
I can pretty much (almost) guarantee you that is what Kurt would say, and I would say that too! BE YOURSELF, because there is only ONE YOU and that makes you SPECIAL and AMAZING in your own right... Yes, I smoked too... as do many singers. The problem comes with longevity. Many of the singers you see that smoke are not able to sing with a clean tone after some time, and for myself being a professional singer there are many cover songs I need to sing with a clean tone that would not be possible with the permanent rasp that often comes with smoking.

Great tips, thanks. I guess Daniel Johns from silverchair sang like Kurt if Kurt had been trained (in the songs which sounded more like Kurt) as D J had singing lessens as a kid. And a higher speaking voice would have helped too, especially since I don’t think mixed voice training was around until more recently.
Hi there. I just recently started studying grit and distortion vocals. Where I'm at with it right now is I can get some grit sometimes, but only really in the head voice. Also, I know it's key to keep it out of the throat and to have the distortion going on mostly in the upper area of your voice. But I do find that's it's still a little uncomfortable and even hurts a bit at times. Of course I always stop right when that happens and usually have to cough to reset everything. I appreciate you showing us these tips. Because a lot of instructors will just say you naturally have rasp/grit or you don't. I guess I'm one of those that doesn't naturally have it in my voice. But I do want to figure out how to utilize this into my singing in a way that's comfortable and safe. Because it's a vocal texture that I feel like I'm really missing out on.
Hi Scott, it can take some time to learn how to do it properly WITHOUT pain (and if you are coughing, it's a clear indication that your technique is doing damage - so your vocal folds are yelling at you to STOP!) Keep going at it, and you will eventually get it... if you want to speed up the process we can work 1 on 1 in private ZOOM sessions to get you there, but only if you are at a certain level because I don't suggest 1:1 sessions for beginners (sometimes they lack appropriate level of dedication - understandably)
Hi Denki, no shame in that - EVERYTHING takes practice... simply KNOW and BELIEVE that you will get there and you will keep trying UNTIL you get there... Rome wasn't built in a day, nor was Kurt's voice (or ANYONE's for that matter!) Keep rocking out and you will get it... I'm available for online lessons if you want to hit me up! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!!! 🤘😎🤘
That's amazing - I never heard that! It's entirely possible that Kurt read that and may be where he got the idea! that's awesome, thank you for sharing that! Appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment! 🤘😎🤘

Kurt's weakness was the low end. If you watch his Top of the Pops appearance, when he sings SLTS an octave down, you'll see how he struggles, even though it's not that low at all.
Hi J, Good point on the low end, but that performance of SLTS was an "F you" TOTPs because they were forced to 'mime' the song (which is why Kurt intentionally butchered it and sounded as bad as he possibly could. This video explains that: ruclips.net/video/DzRAZ1uS-Ao/видео.html I think maybe a better example is this live performance of "In Bloom" where on the lines "sell the kids for food" is barely audible at the end, and "weather changes moods" he goes up at the end so you can hear him: ruclips.net/video/D742dNm1f8Q/видео.html What do you think? 🤘😎🤘
Your video is really helping, cause I already know how to do the fry but when I start adding voice I always go to the wrong place I think. And now I'm starting to find the placement. If you have any other suggestion on how not to go to the wrong place... Thanks a lot!
Hi Andre, it's really just down to practice... I would start with the voice, and SLOWLY bring in the Fry... play with the placement of the fry in your throat (make sure it FRY's but DOESN'T hurt)... when you find the right spot (where it doesn't hurt), you can increase the amount of FRY and the volume to suit the song. Take your time doing this, AND take time doing this... if you put the time (work) into it YOU WILL get it right... just takes time and effort... no way around that! ;)
@@RockYourBestVocals Thanks, watched it and I think I got it but I don't think I've gotten as much rasp out of it as you, but maybe with practice I will get even better!

Wow, small world! (small country too - haha!) ;)
I’ve been practicing this voice for awhile and I see little improvements happening!!!! Definitely subscribing❤️!
BRILLIANT!! Thank you Rygan for taking the time to watch and comment! Yes, you have the key.... practicing! It's the only way you will improve... you have to put some work/effort in! WELL DONE so far!!! :)
Hey how long did it take you to start seeing improvements, thank you :)
Hi Gabriel, I practiced A LOT when I started learning this (I would sing *at least* an album of Nirvana every day, sometimes 2-3 times, so it didn't take very long in days - but you see, I was putting several hours a day... Individual results will vary on your practice time, natural ability, etc so it depends... the ONLY "magic key" is correct practice (correct practice means taking in enough breath to support the notes!). Anyone telling you anything else is bullship :). Check out my video on the top 5 mistakes, which may help: ruclips.net/video/P8IkhwAa84A/видео.html Let me know how you are progressing! Much Love and Rock, Jim
Thank you

6:01 bro this is THE SAME as in an album version of Lithium
Thank you Sasa, appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment - much love!!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
Watching nirvana perform meat puppet songs with the meat puppets was actually the thing that made me want to start finding out how to sing those kind of “folk” style but but watching Kurt it also made me think about incorporating that clean mixed voice sound into it. It makes it sound like your pouring so much heart into it I love it
amazing how human vocal can be tweaked just like Kurt did..and still be legit as an art
@@RockYourBestVocals It was the best video on Kurt's voice I've seen yet! Thank you!!
You are the best vocal Coach for Rock I've ever met, thanks for your advise!!
Wow, thanks! That is so nice of you to say, and I really appreciate the positive feedback!
Awesome. This was very helpful. I think it's wholesome when artists share their knowledge. Thank you sir.
Glad it was helpful! Thank you too! 🙏🏽😊👍🏼
He would go to a lake and scream?? We need to talk about this more !!
Yup! After I heard that, I thought - WOW, there must be something too that! Hurt like HELL for the first few times, until I learned to control it... once you dial in the "sound to pain ratio" it's ALL GOOD! 😂💗 🤘😎🤘

This video is awesome, informative, and hilarious at the same time!
5:35 Can we just appreciate this man’s Jar Jar Binks accent?
Nirvana is my favorite band, and in my own band I really want to sing the same way as him thank you!!
I laughed so hard that I literally tooted when the jar jar binks came out of nowhere. Wasn’t expecting that

That’s awesome to hear! Really appreciate it and I’m so happy to hear it’s working for you! Congratulations! I commend you for putting the work in! Well done 👍🏼😎🤘🏼
Although we can try to imitate him the thing is, that he smoked cigs a lot and thats why he had that fried voice
true he smoked, but many singers smoke and don't fry their voice... Kurt actually had naturally good technique for rock and his voice was not fried (you can tell when you hear him speak)... that said, he died at 27yrs old, so maybe prolonged singing like that would have destroyed his voice. Sadly we'll never know
"He would go to the lake" *cries in California"

I find that imitating Bobcat Goldthwait helps me access some of these vocal sounds.

Pretty cool. If anything I'll take from it, it'll be the encouragement to experiment with my voice and find new techniques. Will have to do that!
Exactly! When you start to play around with sounds, you find things that you didn't realize you were even capable of! It's fun and amazing to experiment with that open mind!

Hey there man! I'm a bit late to the party, but I wanna thank you a bit here. The tip with the breathing helped for rasp, so I'm gonna practice that with everything and try to put it into singing. I'm 14 and I only recently found out about Nirvana (Like what 7 months now) but I'm absolutely in love with their music. This made me also want to start music myself so I decided to pick up my dads old guitar. I really want to be like Kurt, because I think he was just completely rad. This was perfect. Went from 0 to 100 instantly (of course will take more practice to do consistently)
i love how you sound exactly like kurtXD
Put it this way, I would love to be able to sing like this but . Let’s get real he is singing like this because he has so so much pain behind him and behind him again like you wouldn’t believe. So what I’m trying to say is the pain he feels and buries deeper and deeper brings out the pain vocals we are hearing now. It will never be matched ever. Just like Jimi Hendrix and his mind blowing guitar solos.
It will never be matched ever haha
I fucking lost it when he did jar jar
😂 Ya gotsta love some Jar-Jar 😬
I just want to be half a percent of the amazing Kurt was, I’m sure he would say something like be yourself or I’m already amazing because he was a kind dude but he seriously has the coolest voice ever.
I can pretty much (almost) guarantee you that is what Kurt would say, and I would say that too! BE YOURSELF, because there is only ONE YOU and that makes you SPECIAL and AMAZING in your own right... Kurt did start (as most do) by emulating his influences, but eventually found his own voice (I have a video called 'how to find your voice' which touches on that more)... i smoke cigarettes and it destroys my vocals but in a beautiful way, my vocals has now a distortion effects
Thanks man this helped a lot. Keep it up!

Great tips, thanks. I guess Daniel Johns from silverchair sang like Kurt if Kurt had been trained (in the songs which sounded more like Kurt) as D J had singing lessens as a kid. You're welcome - Glad you liked it!

Korean singers in their classical tradition spend a lot of time 'breaking' their voice to create rasp, by screaming in the mountains.

@@RockYourBestVocals WTF 🤣!..
It was a pleasure to look the video ✌
Kurt's weakness was the low end. If you watch his Top of the Pops appearance, when he sings SLTS an octave down, you'll see how he struggles, even though it's not that low at all.
Hi J, Good point on the low end, but that performance of SLTS was an "F you" TOTPs because they were forced to 'mime' the song (which is why Kurt intentionally butchered it and sounded as bad as he possibly could. This video explains that: ruclips.net/video/DzRAZ1uS-Ao/видео.html
I think maybe a better example is this live performance of "In Bloom" where on the lines "sell the kids for food" is barely audible at the end, and "weather changes moods" he goes up at the end so you can hear him: ruclips.net/video/D742dNm1f8Q/видео.html What do you think? 🤘😎🤘
Haha his octave down slts is my comfortable range but he like trolled it, so i can sing it normally just different key

Some of this was helpful and other parts I would pause it, wait a few seconds and then play it cus it just sounds like a raspy keyboard smash
Thanks for the feedback! Much appreciated... it was a few years ago when I did that, but your feedback is valuable, so thanks!
Take your time doing this, AND take time doing this... if you put the time (work) into it YOU WILL get it right... just takes time and effort... no way around that! ;)
Man, great video but i can't seem to get the second step done😢
You can do it! Refer to my other comment about my video on 'safe rasp' which I think will help you...
@@RockYourBestVocals Thanks, watched it and I think I got it but I don't think I've gotten as much rasp out of it as you, but maybe with practice I will get even better!
If someone wants to sing : rock/alternative rock/grunge :
Will he need a (vocal talent) or he will need (skills and practicing) ???
Hi Vladamir, vocal talent will often come from skills and practicing, so I guess it's both/all... MOST importantly is the BELIEF that you can do it - start from there, and then just START SINGING! the only way to get to be a singer is to START!
