The only time Nirvana played this live was at the Aragon Ballroom, Chicago, IL 10/23/93. Dave announces "this is our last song, it's called All Apologies" and then Kurt thinks otherwise and launches into this. It's so much more powerful, lyrically, sonically and knowing it was being heard for the first time is absolutely stunning. The acoustic version is also beautifully haunting.
P.S. Courtney "had no right" playing that song

@@ikemreacts Well, if he could have kicked heroin or dumped the toxic moocher Courtney, he would have given us more songs. OP is right that he was a better and better songwriter as the albums progressed. Thing is, he did heroin primarily because of his excruciating stomach pain from ulcers. So that would have had to have been treated first. And it's hard to leave someone after years of looking for "love." So, kind of a moot point, but still.

Obviously nobody can claim to know entirely what happened ( I have my own take on all this but opinions are like arseholes, everybody has got one) but given both versions allude to wanting and needing to move on, and in the acoustic version he even sings that he will ‘love again’ etc I think it’s pretty clear he wanted out of the marriage and the band but I don’t think there’s lyrical references to suicide in either of these versions, although there are plenty of them in In Utero, sadly.

From all the footage of seeing if Kurt and Courtney together before his demise, Courtney was very abusive towards him, and it was obviously shown, especially in the 1993 MTV video music awards, if you look closely at how she treats him and some of the pictures he’s not happy with her she’s just taking a spotlight for herself, and when he wrote the song, you know you’re right, the lyrics are plainly obvious he was going to divorce her and leave her and then probably afterwards Nirvana would’ve been no more basically in his own words he was at the end of his ropes

i truly feel with all my heart ♥️ that EVERYONE somehow just knows that she was completely behind his demise… and she is also just AGONIZING over that to this day (just as she should be)

Love was trying to say he was murdered. She rang around trying to contact Layne to see if he'd seen Kurt in his last days coz she wanted answers. She said to Layne's dad (after not being able to talk to Layne) that she knows he didn't commit suicide. Layne was adamant Kurt wouldn't have killed himself but didn't want to point fingers. He obviously had his opinions on who did it. They weren't close but he knew Kurt enough to have an inside POV on what happened

I'll never forget the day YKYR released. Rob, the DJ said they had it and wouldn't hold it back any longer. He played it, I screamed, fell to the floor, cried,...then he played it again. I called my friend down the street, and we were both screaming. I listened as the DJ played it a third time, then ran to my friend's house where we listened together as the radio continued to play the song 10 times in a row.
It was beautiful. Kurt is beautiful.

In what i understand of years of being a fan and listener of nirvana and Kurt's music "Who cares?" would be probably be something that he would say about the meaning of any of his songs. Some of me is glad he didn't have to go through the aftermath of separating with love. It's kinda a sad and poetic moment in time when Kurt wanted nothing but love but had to walk away from it. Both her and the feeling. RIP the voice that makes most party and many cry.

At the start its the sound of a kicked over ladder, which means hanging and suicide, of which we all know he was suicidal, and the words he wrote and sang were about pain, sadness, suicide, of which people relate, and of which the song is about. If they write lyrics about their life and pain you better take it as the truth, Chris Cornell, Chester Bennington, Lil Peep, Amy winehouse, Layne staley, Juice WRLD, Mac Miller, etc they may cover up the way they died, but its basically the same for all.

    • @michealriseley6261
      @michealriseley6261 7 месяцев назад

"We all knew he was suicidal"
Nonsense, the suicidal story came from Courtney, everyone else said that Kurt upbeat and positive, he had even made plans to try and reconcile with Donald, by going fishing.
One thing suicidal people do not do....is make plans, it just doesn't happen, and it's one of the many major flaws in the "suicide" theory.

U can actually hear that song in the bootleg cd outcesticide.. and in the show they introduced it as "on a mountain" or mountain top. Something like that. When the quiet goes to loud the sound just explodes. Sounds amazing. I 1xt heard this song wayyyyyy before it was ever released like 2001. Before any boxset came out. There's also the home recording. Very haunting

I remember the day the mp3 leaked on file sharing. We had the live one for a few years, then 10 seconds of the studio appeared during the legal disputes. The full studio version leaked the day Courtney Love actually was hosting MTV for 24 hours. Its suspected that Grohl leaked it. Its theorized he wanted to throw her off on live TV, but she probably didnt realize it was leaked, or she wasnt trying to wig about it.

Love all this information. I just wish you would've used something more appropriate for the portion of video that plays during the live recording of the song from the Aragon Ballroom (1:23 > 1:55). Looks like the footage you used is from the Nevermind-era/tour (no angels on stage, and he's playing his sunburst Jaguar instead of one of his Jagstangs, which is what he was using during the In Utero tours in '93). Plus the video isn't anywhere close to being in sync (musically) with the audio we hear. Even if there isn't any video from the Aragon show, I think some still shots from the performance would've been better than older, out of sync footage. Just my two cents.

Nirvana was my discovery into how music touches that special part of the soul. I was a teenager when I discovered Nirvana’s music. Kurt Cobain’s raw and passionate and beautiful vocals touch the part of me that was confused, angry and lost. I felt seen by his music, I felt like I belonged somewhere, even though I didn’t know where specifically where. I just knew that this man’s real and vicious screams and their beautiful melodies made me really feel alive and understood ( somehow.) It wasn’t because he was depressed drug addicted or dark . It was that Nirvanas music was extremely honest! The main style of music during the 90’s and previously the 80’s was very fake, painted up and plastic( in my opinion.) For a band like Nirvana to hit it big exposed people, who were “ asleep” to an art the pointed directly at them saying “ LISTEN, I see you!” I wish to God Kurt was still alive because damn, what a painful moment. Music, the way it was making me feel, died with him. Of course new bands come out every day and wow they rock! However, nothing and no one will ever hit me in the heart the way Nirvana did!❤

I tend to think Courtney was downplaying but also responding. A lot of people grieve differently. In her lyrics she touches on an anger of him leaving as he did. I reserve judgement of her. This song was a song about her after all. It hit hard the first time I heard it. Both versions.

From what listening and watching different things Courtney was trying to break them up because wanted Kurt to believe he was the only talented one. If she truly felt that way she would either not want the rest of band to have any say or want what Kurt wanted. Holding a song hostage to find the most profitable way to get it out in my opinion goes against what Kurt was about. I mean he turned down 1 million bucks to head lollapalooza so I don’t think he’d nitpick over which box set his song was in so they could sell more. But I don’t know that’s only what I think.
