Congrats on the baby! As a VI person, I was thinking as a gift opening game, maybe everyone in attendance can be blindfolded. Then you open each gift and describe it. Once you describe the gift, others can shout out what they think it is. Then you can choose someone you agree with if that's what you think the gift is. Attendees are not allowed to guess their own gift they brought.

Congratulations Cayla! I’m on the other side of the blind spectrum with some usable vision. I am a mom of a 3 year old boy. I can’t read but I am learning braille for this. I have to have people cut his nails and I don’t see if his face is dirty. On the plus side he is super independent and helps me a lot.

At the baby shower in lieu of cards you could ask guests to bring a small Disney Plushy from your registry (this way they don’t all bring the same one.) Or ask them to bring a small plushy of their favorite Disney Character. You would be able to feel the characters and know which one they are because of your love of Disney. Your daughter could hold/play with the plushy as she grows. It could be a way to share your love of Disney with her.

I would love to have a very long conversation with you, Cayla. I would like to tell you the story about how the personnel at the hospital after I gave birth the first time were thinking that I was not going to be able to take care of my baby. And I still had a good amount of vision at the time. One of the nurses aides came into give me a chance to spend time with my baby and told me they implicitly told her not to leave him alone with me.

Congratulations! We have more or less the same due date, and I’m a first-time parent, too! My partner and I lost our first pregnancy very early on during the spring/summer of last year. After 6 or so weeks of recovery after my D&C, we kept trying to conceive, and spent months waiting for something to “click” again. I did not have issues with infertility, but I most definitely think that saying it was traumatic for you is in no way an overstatement of how painful the experience can be. You and I have now made it through to the other side, and I can’t wait to meet our beautiful babies in due course.

I'm so excited for the future blind mom series. I unfortunately can't really give any suggestions regarding accessible baby things but I do have a general suggestion. You could probably get some great tips from taking VRT sessions. Pretty sure parenthood is something they can cover. So you'd learn how to take care of your kid safely and they'd also suggest accessible items as well.
Regarding gift opening, you could either skip that all together or maybe just have the guests describe their gifts to you? I saw some better suggestions in the comments but I too find gift opening pretty boring. And regarding cards I'd just write in the invitation something like: Hey guys just a reminder I'm blind.... please no greeting cards it's such a waste of paper and money. In all honesty I think most people throw out cards anyway lol so they might pretty much always be a waste.

Congratulations! How exciting! 20 weeks! Halfway! Woot woot!!! Also when I felt those butterfly kicks for the first time! So incredibly special! ✨ I am totally blind and my little girl just turned 15 months. I am also a first time mom. I am 35 and a Christian mental health counselor. Although, I have not been working since baby girl came along. Actually going to be going back to work next month which will be hard on this momma! I have a cited husband, but I am home with baby girl all day while hubby is at work. Having this little one has been the greatest blessing in my life! And this is coming from a girl who really struggled to take the step to have a baby in the first place. With everything I have been through in my life, losing my sight suddenly as well as master school, and all that, bringing this baby into the world was the hardest thing I have ever done by a long margin. Lol! But I had a very tough pregnancy and delivery… Praying that your pregnancy goes so well and that you have a blessed and smooth delivery! And even with all of the difficulty, I would do it over again! There is nothing like having that little one in your life. It is truly a miracle! Love your channel and love the idea you have to share your experiences as a blind bomb! Is also some thing I’ve kicked around doing, but I will be so happy to share with you! Not sure how long comments can be on here, so I will continue with another comment. So excited for you! You are going to be such an incredible mom! Love and hugs on your blind momma journey! 23:45

For our baby shower, we requested braille books instead of greeting cards. Individuals were able to write personal messages in the books, which was awesome! We thought it would be special for baby girl to read herself when she grows up… All of the love, and well wishes for her and her life. it also got us a really good start on a collection of books for baby girl. There are a couple of really great places you can order braille books online, and they are not any more expensive than buying them in print at target or whatever. My family got into it, and purchased lots of touchy-feely books and sound books as well. It is truly incredible What is available these days! 🙌🥰❤️ 23:45

Congratulations, Kayla I am so so happy for you and your husband! I’ve been praying and hoping that this day would come that I would see a video of you spreading the good news!
I like the name of your channel to be maybe the baby girl Chronicles.
No a couple of ideas here I can throw out. I like the idea of turning the opening of gifts at the baby shower as a game. Maybe what you could do is open up the gifts and. Maybe have you try to guess what the gift is and your guest have to say whether it’s hot or cold. Hot meaning you’re very very close to what the gift is. And cold you’re not close.
No, I totally understand about getting greeting cards. Like you I would prefer not to get a greeting card because I can’t read them either. And usually they end up either sitting in my filing cabinet for years on end or eventually they end up in the trash. So I would suggest as an idea is instead of a card, maybe people can donate money to help with Baby expenses, Harriet.
I hope that some of the suggestions will help. Again, Kayla I am so so excited for you and your husband! And I am definitely looking forward following you and your husband on your journey through your babies life!
I also was just thinking, I was wondering if maybe one of the videos that you add to your baby journey videos, is your thoughts and research that you probably did on whether or not you had a concern if you’re newborn be blind or sided. I think that has always been one of my biggest concern is whether or not, my retinitis pigmentosa could be inherited to the baby wired by the baby.
Sending you and your husband lots of love and big hugs

@@CaylawithaC That's great to hear (not that she wouldn't be awesome nonetheless).
BTW I did not have any issues conceiving, but I still had a hard time connecting to my baby even after she was born: she was what we thought colicy (as it turns out she was confused because of her blindness), I had issues with breastfeeding and our families all threw their ideas at me how to be able to 'put her down'. Now I finally have a good and meaningful relationship with her, I needed 6 months for this. All I wanted to say is that it's normal what you are feeling and you are not alone (I'm also a psychologist).
So, to the list... I was taking notes during the day for you, I only have a few items though. Some are generally good for all mums, but I can see why it's especially useful for you.
      - Clothes with zippers are much easier to handle, or if you can get your hands on magnetic ones, those are the absolute best! I prefer pants over onsies during the day, it's easier to manage.
      - Bibs that are the full upper-body/sleeved type (raincoat material). We are doing baby lead weaning, I can save most clothes of hers from needing to be changed constantly. :D
      - The best item for bathing I found is the Anglecare Soft Touch Baby Bath Support, it has a protruding part between the legs so the baby won't slide downwards at all.
      - If you want to breastfeed exclusively: tiable nursing pillow (but in this case do not use a pacifier). The none-tiable ones are hard to manage, they slide everywhere all the time, so it's harder to keep them in place.
      - Portable changing mat: I think having a changing station is not necessary, it's even more hazardous as time goes by and babies become more mobile (especially if you can't easily track their movement). I'm using the Hauck Change Me, but we are going on early intervention programs 3 times a week too, so it's always in my backpack.
      - 3in1 strollers are pretty good with the newborn carrier car seats for the first while, but I'd invest in a good 360° swivel carseat with isofix if you have it in your car (not sure of the best brands over there). You can use isofix with the newborn carrier too.
      - We use a JBL Go 3 for music and bedtime stories (there are a lot of great Hungarian bands for children), but I heard there are really good Braille children books out there too. Or you can buy picture/board books which have tactile parts and no words written in them - you get to create the story. :D ie. with only a few words per page:
      - What Does Bunny Like (Touch&Feel) by Igloo Books www.amazon.com/What-Does-Bunny-Like-Touch/dp/178810367X
      - Little Frog (Touch&Explore) by Katie Saunders (might not be avaible on Amazon, but you can show this to relatives as an example) www.ebay.com/itm/304725123973
      - Crinckly pants for when they can crawl :D

Speaking of incredible, I am going to tell you 23:45 the #1 thing that we could have never lived without when becoming parents! Well, we could have, but it would have been miserable. Baby Brezza! Baby Brezza! Baby Brezza! And I will say it one more time… Baby Brezza!!!! 😂 It is a formula machine that mixes a perfectly warmed bottle at the touch of a button. A.k.a.. Pure magic! Lol! When you are so sleep deprived and can barely manage to find the kitchen, let alone a bottle, this thing is a lifesaver! It also works with your smart phone, so you can open up the app to change settings and adjust bottle size if you lose track of what the bottle machine is set to. You can also put a bottle in place to start a bottle with your phone via Wi-Fi while you are changing a diaper or what not. Baby starts crying, momma grabs phone and starts the bottle, momma gets baby and changes, her diaper, and bottle is waiting and ready. Never had any luck with the standard bottle warmers. It was difficult to know when bottle was finished as most the displays are visual. I ended up timing out how long it would take to warm breastmilk and setting my echo timer. We had every good intention to breast-feed and provide breastmilk, but I had a lot of difficulty and delivery, and was not able to produce as I should have given the stress of the event. However, I did pump for about six months and gave her one bottle of breastmilk daily. Every person and every baby is different. Never forget that, and never feel guilty for using formula or making choices that are best for you and baby! Accessibility wise, I do feel that pumping is challenging. Doable, but challenging. Especially when you are so tired. It just depends on your circumstances and the supports you have around to help with baby while you take care of pumping, cleaning pump parts, storing breastmilk, etc. We quickly went to strictly bottlefeeding rather than breast and bottle. Our baby took to bottles well, and it made things easier on me for sure. When you pump and breast-feed, it is almost like having to feed twice every time you feed. If you plan to breast-feed, I do have some suggestions regarding brands of breast pumps that I found to work better with blindness. ❤️🍼👩🏼‍🍼

Essential: Zip up sleepers instead of snap up sleepers.
Essential: baby play mat. You will place the baby on the floor for her to practice rolling over and sitting. A play mat is tactile. You will know where she is. You will place the baby on the mat and you will keep track of where she is.

100% agree on the zip up sleepers! And now, they make two way zip sleepers, so you don’t have to expose their upper body during changing. It just zips up from the feet for the diaper change. So, so nice! Highly recommend as well!

You are a boat at the stage where I first started feeling movement from the baby. Caleb actually stuck his foot out far enough for me to kind of see the outline of his little foot sticking out under my skin. When I showed my husband he said yuck how can you stand it. I told him like I have a choice. Haha 😆

Lol yeah I’m not going to lie I am a little bit nervous for when those movements get pretty pronounced

Hi Cayla, first of all, many congratulations…! As a legally blind man I was lucky to have experienced the first years of both my son and daughter. For me that is handling babies with only light and dark but one is amazed what just the touch can tell…! I could tell you many stories of how I did the all day routines and what kind of aids I used and what kind of inventions I created myself with just logical thinking…
The present-opening got me thinking… Here, in the Netherlands, there is this aid for the blind called penfriend. A label-reader that speaks out an recorded message when the penfriend touches the little label… What if… if your guests would put a label on their present and use the penfriend to record their own baby-shower-present… then, at the day of the baby-shower, you get the penfriend labelreader everybody was using all along, and with every present you get, you hold the penfriend on the label and you hear their wishes and what it is they are giving…??
To think about this, smile, this is also great for Christmas and birthdays…!
And so, there are always new ways to create and discover…!
Take care and best wishes for the both of you now and three of you later…!
    Fred

Cayla, have you ever heard of a 3D ultrasound. Just a thought. I don’t know if your insurance would cover it but I have heard of blind women having it done.

Hi Cayla!! Congratulations I am so happy for you! I am an 18-year-old visually impaired girl, so I don’t have any parenting experience but I have an idea for maybe the gift opening at your baby shower if it’s possible for your family to make braille labels and put them on the gift and then you can read them yourself and have your period reaction. That might be a good idea for Christmas my sister put A braille label on her gift for me and I really appreciated it and I thought it was really cool. I’m not sure if your family would have access to making labels but it’s just an idea. 🩷🩷
