I'm still partially sighted with my RP and I have just about as many awkward situations. I can't tell you how many times I've had the awkwardness with handing cards, cash, etc. to cashiers, papers to my students, getting things handed back to me (since my visual field below a certain point cuts off), and whatnot. For folks that know me it's not a big deal, but ofr randos it's really vexing.
The photo thing is similar for me. If my family is with me, they'll coach me (mostly), but otherwise it's like "guess I'll just be looking in the wrong spot!"

Your awkward moments are so incredibly relatable to me! My trainer sometimes moves, when we are in a work out session and I’m talking to air. I often talk to walls, pillars and machines in the gym. Usually, excusing myself for running into them. Thank for sharing your unique awkwardness around family. Can’t wait for part 2!

I’m glad the time I tried to show you my tattoo didn’t make the list. Lol. I think about that a lot.

Haha I completely forgot about that. People try to show me things so often it doesn’t even register as an awkward moment. Plus we had literally just met so I don’t fault you for that at all

You are adorable - I'm old enough to be your Mom (or grandmother) and have had RP for many years. My husband of 52 years will still leave the room without telling me and I will be carrying on a conversation with him. Finally, I'll realize that he's either asleep or not present any longer. I've grown to laugh more and more at situations that are awkward...even wrote a book on RP - The Lighter Side with anecdotes from the RP community. Looking forward to your next video

My husband is so stealthy and will come into the room without me realizing he is there and will speak and it makes me jump!

I can definitely relate to this, particularly the customer service desk and running into people when you’re not sure where they are I also haven’t been able to come up with a way to non-awkwardly ask who they are when they clearly know me and find that the people who remember to tell me their name are the ones I recognize anyway where is the ones I don’t recognize don’t remember to.

I feel for you. I have had a lot of awkward moments too mostly because no one say a thing to me so I have no idea that they are there. You’re not alone in it. Hope all is well. Much love ❤

lol your stories made me laugh and cringe at the same time as all of these are things i have also had to go through. It’s so true about the either look stupid or look rude thing.
I have been legally blind for over a decade. I have not met another blind person or seen any blind related videos. I just started looking through them no as i have started my own RUclips channel and I’m binge watching videos from so many blind RUclipsrs. It’s like i found my people. lol.

Oh this all sounds so familiar , i do notice when i wear dark glasses where people cannot see my eyes this is some way they sooner understand you cannot see. Here isa silly moment i laughed at myself, i am waiting for the mailman expecting a heavy package so i put my white cain under my arm pushing it on my body so i can hold both hands out and even bend my knees a bit for the package .... well... he just put an envelope in my hand. Hmm.. yeh the package was still in the truck. When i first lost complete sight i had trouble a lot just stating to stranger i am blind, but doing this more often i believe it helps telling them giving them heads up .. still there will be moments like you said i dont think that will ever go away. But you are right specially in a storre or reception they could say something like 'can i help you' i think that is just part of the job , greets Mak from alaska

I think the best way to approach someone who says hey Stephen, I knew you from high school. How’s it going buddy! Here’s to always get into the habit of asking. I’m sorry, but I don’t remember who you are. Can you remind me. Sometimes I have even said to people I am legally blind and I can’t see the faces very well, can you tell me who you are.

I miss a lot of handshakes. In jujitsu class, people think that I’m either a jerk or a real bad ass. Lol that is, when they don’t realize I am blind.

Hahahahaha. Ok, you just won the cookie with that story. It’s hard to top.
I am blind and worked in an office where there was a deaf worker in another department. She was lovely and we used to speak over emails all the time, but it used to get really awkward when we bumped into each other.. i could not see her and she could not hear me … she could lip read but could not with me as apparently my beard obstructed the lips movement. I always felt so bad, as i really liked her and wished we could find a way to get past this.

So I'm not visually impaired (beyond what glasses can correct), however, my mum & I are both somewhat face-blind (her more strongly than me), & rely heavily on context to place people. Totally feel you on the "how do I ask who you are, when you clearly know me, without seeming rude" when people randomly approach us! (I usually just go the overly-polite British route, have the conversation, & try & figure out who they are during/after! My mum usually says something like:
"I'm sorry, but I'm really bad with names/faces, can you remind me". Most people are happy to do so, but it doesn't really stop it feeling embarassing, awkward & frustrating.)
I have an awkward-funny story of one time I thought I was the one being face-blind, but it was actually the other person's mistake:
So one time at church a lady came up to me & started talking. I didn't have a clue who she was - worse than usual - but she seemed so certain she knew me, that I just talked to her. I realised afterwards (thanks to a comment she made about my glasses) that I'm 99% sure she mistook me for my sister (we look fairly similar, & at the time people kept mistaking us for twins). I never saw her again after, so I've no idea how she felt about it, but I felt incredibly awkward the whole time for "not recognising her"!

    • @CaylawithaC
      @CaylawithaC  3 месяца назад

That’s funny because I have experienced a similar situation a lot. Me and my sister look similar in often times people have approached me thinking they knew me when actually it turned out they thought I was my sister

I definitely relate to all of this. Especially about taking photos. Not only just being blind. My eyes also face different directions. So I hear what are you looking at quite a bit. But the part about conversations is so true and sometimes I just kind of feel like why even bother. Especially at like family get togethers. They all love to move the conversations to different rooms or outside. So I'm just like guess I'll just quietly sit here.

Hi see a YLA. It is so wonderful to see you again here on RUclips. You look fabulous! How is your husband doing?
After listening to this video, I have to relate to the majority of these embarrassing moments as I have had so many of myself similar to what you have gone through.
Thanks again for another wonderful video! How have you been doing?

I can relate with the counter thing for sure. I get bullied alot. People think I'm faking.. I say I have limited vision. One eye blind, other a small tunnel. So One time I had a retail job. A girl was saying she lost her name tag. No one said anything. (There were six of us) I was shocked no one offered help. So I offered to help. Just to be nice. I looked everywhere. Another girl came over and tapped me on the shoulder. She explained it was a joke and about six girls were at the counter laughing. The girl said let's say Emily didn't lose her name tag. It was funny the blind girl trying to find something. It's sad how people are.
    Do you use a cane?

Sometimes a person with vision can create a 30 second laugh that they think is hysterical which can cause you pain for an hour a day a month or a year or never being able to get over the situation. I don’t know why people do this but they do. Also people out there are simply ignorant of the fact that there are blind people among us There’s not as many as you might think or many of them don’t leave the house. Many of them travel with somebody like yourself, which sometimes can help you. Others are more free range and they travel by themselves. I pray for the people who think it’s nice to make fun of me, or to ridicule me or to embarrass me. I hope someday that they see, and that’s upon the heirs of their ways But I doubt it :-) again, thank you for the video I laughed. I cried I got angry. it that much worse. People just don’t understand. I could say more, but everybody knows the story :-)

I wonder if the people who were taking your picture felt shy about using verbal directions for you to know where the camera was? So far, i always heard people who would take my picture say things such as look up a little bit, or sometimes, take 2 steps forward depending on if i wasn't in frame 30:57

I am brazilian and here in Brazil people are extremely helpful and offer help with everything when I'm out using a cane. They just assume I'm totally blind and I get a bit embarrassed of telling them I can see enough to do this or that.
