Canon G12 still relevant in 2020? (G12 vs Sony RX100)

  • My opinion on this 10 year old camera. Can the Canon G12 still compete with all the new point and shoot cameras in 2020?

It has a CCD sensor hence the amazing colors: they actually nailed it at the beginning of digital photography with ccd but the screens were tinier and cameras had less bells and wishes like 4K and 5 axis stabilization. And then screwed it by throwing away the CCD sensors just because CMOS sensors were just less expensive to produce and didn’t overheat as much...CCD sensors have global shutter too, this means that every pixel is recorded at once, cmos sensors use rolling shutter to record the pictures which still produces some jello effect in video and banding if used with the electronic shutter...I just wished Nikon or any camera maker could implement a nice modern apsc or 35mm CCD sensor with 4k video. This would be heaven !

I shoot with a full frame DSLR and when I dont feel like lugging it, but I want something more than a cell phone, I carry a G12.
A year later, I wind up uploading my images and I'm stunned. It's the equivalent of having an old film camera... I take pictures with this camera that I simply dont take with my dslr. The compositions and exposures are special somehow.
This is a great camera for someone who wants to learn photography... and for people who appreciate the Artless Art.

G12 performance is amazing for its time. A compact camera with a tiny sensor but high-resolution raw image, HD video with the articulate screen is insane. I have both G10 and G12, both of the still perform great. I recommend finding an underwater housing for more underwater shooting fun. They are also cheap now.

I really agree with you. My first Canon was the A620, which gave me excellent stills around the Canyon Lands, back in 2008, Tack-sharp images @ 50 ISO. The swivel screen was a must. The video wasn't anything to write home about. Then I bought the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V, and boy, this little guy was sharp in video & stills, right off the camera, but working with a fixed screen was a drag at times. I bought the Sony RX100-II, and the RX10. Both were great for video, but the sharpness of the 9V was far superior to the softness of even the SONY's extreme-overpriced Alpha Series. Recently I've acquired the Canon Powershot G15, and it really brings home the bacon, since I'm never going to expose at the museum...
    Love your video!
    Keep on sharing those reviews.

I have a G12 that was a Christmas gift in 2011, new. I have used it on and off but recently I have wanted to use it more and more for travel due to its size. It is simply a wonderful camera! I wanted to take it to The Masters this year on the day of the Par 3 Contest, but wanted to get an additional battery. They are impossible to find. I’d leave my Nikon DSLR behind a lot more if I could find an additional battery or two. Many batteries that fit this camera have less than stellar reviews. Any advice, please reply. Thanks!! 📷📸

I bought one of these about a year ago and I agree with all you said about it except sharpness, I wish it was sharper than the results I’m getting, if you guys have any tips, I’d appreciate it.
Other than that, the image quality is really nice, well controlled noise levels and the color science has that classic canon character, I love the positive film profile.
It’s a great companion camera for a dslr or for those trying to learn to shoot on a proper manual camera with all the dials and settings without the hassle of a bulky and expensive dslr.

After using Nikon DSLR D7000 for some years, I bought this Canon PowerShot G12 (for only 6o euros) and I have to agree that it is an awesome piece of hardware although it has its limitations in use. Being so small and having such small and sensitive buttons, if you have large hands/fingers you can easily accidentally activate backside buttons.

We have the G12, the A650 and the A640 as well as the Sony R100 in our household ... and while the Sony IS a beautifully crafted piece of kit, it simply doesn't get used much. Basically, we often forget that we even have it. Main problem is the user interface. It's the old "it's hard to use because it's trying to be simple"... the Sony is the definition of bad interface design: everything is "logic" when you are a Sony engineer (or a masochist) - *however, the Canon is a camera for photographers = intuitive to use.*

G12 was a nice camera but it's showing its age. I wouldn't give more than 30$ for it nowadays. It might be interesting for someone who wants to learn basics of photography and can't afford much. You have a complete control over the process and dials are amazing. Build quality is amazing. Yes, it has nice color rendition. Jpeg's are not that great by today's standards, I would say they are easily beaten by modern smartphones. Only way to get the wanted image quality is by using RAW format, manual modes and post-processing. For daylight photos it will be fine, but you can do the same with a good quality smartphone camera under favorable light conditions.
