- I got called a full frame snob. So today I ditched the full frame cameras and took out a (loaned to me) Canon G10 compact camera. Initially sceptical about this little camera I was very quickly won over by just how capable this little compact camera is.

I love my G10. I have sensor dust in exactly the same spot as your example which is interesting but I still love throwing in a jacket or hoody pocket to capture moments when out and about. Raw files, Canon colours and very good battery life, a hidden gem for sure.
The person who called you a snob is the snob. Your preference in cameras is nobody else's business. You have nothing to prove to anyone. Great channel.
Thank you. This video was a little tongue in cheek. Honestly, sensor size isn’t really that much of a big deal to me. Thanks for watching and I appreciate the comment.
Had my G10 for over a decade now, bought a couple higher end full frame camera’s over the years. I honestly sold off everything but this camera. It does all I need as a non professional. Solid build, great features, long battery life, and enough functions to handle all my abilities. I actually bought this from a professional who used it as his “candid” camera when doing shoots or day to day stuff. He actually wanted to buy it back from me, had to decline.
Any experience how the g12 compares to the g10 in terms CCD Colors and image quality under normal circumstances?
Thanks for this. I have a Canon G12 and did not realize it has that ND capability. I bought a front end adapter for a polarizer which adds another ND full stop making it an ND16 - I hope to try that out soon. BTW the G10 & 12 are small sensor cameras but not the smallest. In fact it was about 70% larger in area than most other "small sensor" cameras. The crop factor for the 1/1.7" sensor it used is 4.6 vs. 5.6 for most other P&S compact P&S cameras. I am convinced that this larger size results in measurable improvement in IQ. It also uses a beautiful (now extinct) CCD sensor (you get cult points for that) - the last of this breed to do that. Yes, it is P&S but you can use it fully manually with nice hard dials & controls. You can also add wide or telephoto lenses using the same adapter. With the adapter it has a good 36-140mm (film equivalent) reach (the 28-36mm range is obscured by the adapter lens barrel). It shoots RAW and has image stabilization. It's built tough. Well designed and thoughtful camera - nothing cheap in its design or function. There is even a hard left-thumb dial to adjust IC two stops either way. Jewel of a camera, really - and the end of an era for that sensor size and type.
I’m an amateur photographer, love taking pics of scenery & wildlife. I have a Panasonic LUMIX TZ80 & it’s a fab point & shoot. I wouldn’t know where to start with a full frame camera. Plus it’s light weight & easy to carry around. I’m glad you’ve given these type of cameras an airing. More please lol 🤓👍
The camera you use should never really be a factor in the images you take. This video was a little tongue in cheek - probably the wrong day and the wrong place to use the G10. I actually had a lot of fun with it and I’m going to look at getting something similar for myself.
I have a G12 that had sensor dust (actually a fibre in my case), which was visible when shooting high apertures (well as high as the camera can go so f/8). As you've probably realised the camera has no inbuilt sensor cleaning function 😔, however I did pick up a tip that with some vibration it might be possible to dislodge the dust. So I stuck the camera on top of the washing machine (on a cloth to stop it sliding off) the next time I ran a load of washing, not really expecting much, but to my surprise the offending fibre is now gone from my photos! 😀 Might be worth a try for anyone with the same issue. My only minor problem with the camera now is hot pixels, but they're easy enough to edit out if the show up.
Happy to hear that, would you share how to store the camera?
1. I have no idea what happened to that example during its life, but it is extremely unlikely to get any dust on the sensor. I bought my G10 in 2008, and have no such issue with it.
2. At the time this was the go-to second camera for most photojournalists, and other professionals. It still holds up today, especially when shooting in RAW.
I don't think you can say it's "unlikely" to get dust on the sensor of these fixed lens cameras. Actually quite the opposite.
I have a G7X with several dust particles on the sensor, and if you look it up you will find that it is very common in cameras like these. The gaps in the telescoping barrels of the lens is where the dust gets in -- probably the same place it get into interchangeable lens cameras with zoom lenses.
As for cleaning the sensor, it has to be done professionally, and I have been quoted $250 just to open the camera. Might or might not be worth it -- depends on the individual.
Back in the days I had the G12 and I loved the camera. The ccd colors were ooc just great. After that I tried the S100, which was ok but not as good and not as fun as the little black brick. Maybe I buy one again just for fun. Bye the way, I bought an original 5d some months ago, which I use with a 85mm 1.8 as portrait machine. Phenomenal.
I think the CCD sensor here threw me. Everything look different when I was editing and turned out way too OTT.
Cheers to the G12. I bought a G12 new & it’s been a favorite ever since.
@@ChrisBaitsonPhoto What is "OTT"? (And "ooc"?)
@@Fergutor OTT is over the top. CCD is the type of sensor in the camera.
@@ChrisBaitsonPhoto Ah thanks. No, I knew what's CCD (and CMOS), the op said "ooc".
I love the CCD sensor in my old FZ35, sure it struggles with reds, yellows and white in certain conditions but still look precise to a fault.
I have a G9 since 2008. Many trips with it. Is it worthy to upgrade to a G16?
Hi Chris. I just want to say that I enjoy your channel and I hope you will continue it for many years to come. There are a lot of snobs in photography circles who focus too much on equipment, you don’t fit that description. What particularly comes through in your videos is your enjoyment of the environment and the photographic process. I used to enjoy the great David Thorpe’s channel, now yours fills that void.
Thank you Wayne I appreciate that. To me the gear doesn’t really matter all that much which is why I try and avoid making content around specific cameras or lenses too much. This video was a little tongue in cheek in all honesty.
Great video! I love my G11, had it since release. What sold me was the quality of the noise at high ISO. Very monochromatic; almost film-like grain. And of all the different camera brands I’ve owned I found the Canon OOC jpeg colors were my favorites. Until Fujifilm and their film simulations.
All that said, what L Bracket is on the G10?!?!?!
All that sai
I own Canon (and many other breands) compacts, DSLRs, rangefinders... film and digital.
The Sureshot G range is fantastic for a daily carry, and I've owned a G16 (no need for an ND on this one) since new, and it's always been a great experience when out and about with it.
At a time where most people rely on Iphone/Smartphone photos, this is a treat. These have larger sensors and more fun as you can be more creative. I've never had one, but these would be nice for travel.
I do wonder where these will be in a year or so though. 1" sensors and good optical zoom on phones are becoming more commonplace, so it will be harder to recommend these other than for the shooting experience.
When they get such long zoom lenses, I'll consider it
I had a friend that bought one just before a trip to England. When he got back he had me print all of the shots he took, it's been a long time ago, but I think they were 9x12. They turned out great. I've shot with one for a couple of weeks also and enjoyed shooting it very much.
You can print much bigger than you think from these small sensors, esp. if you are not pushing the limits of ISO. A few years ago I shot several pics of the grand kids in the swimming pool using the Canon SX740 which has the 1/2.3 sensor (which is even smaller than the 1/1.7). I have some beautiful 10"x15" prints from these pics hanging on the wall. Even viewed up close, they are sharp and detailed.
Nice video.
You can create great photos with any camera, I think the marketing has got the better of many people.
I have and still use my Nikon D700 and love it.
i've heard by photographers that the d700 might be one of Nikon's best cameras ever. I want one but have a few Canons to buy first!
What a fantastic video, im totally new to camera's and came across your channel which ive subscribed to while looking for a good compact camera,i will look through your videos to see if you do anything for beginners
Thank you
Thanks man I appreciate that!
I've just bought a Canon G3 for £15 delivered, honestly the jpegs are amazing & I haven't tried RAW yet. As a daytime camera it will be fine. Like yourself I'm a bit of a collector. I urge to try an original 5D (The classic). They are fantastic. So good I bought 2 😊
You know the 5D Classic does look tempting now and again. Sample images I’ve seen from it are gorgeous. See for me it’s never mattered what I’m using. As long as I’m having fun. Googling the G3 now 😂
How many camera’s do you have Chris ? Which is your favourite and why ? I’ve got a Canon RP but I’m considering going back to a 6D or a 5D iii
Hi Joy,
I use the RP for video.
I have a 1D3, a 5D3 and a 7D.
There’s a 400D floating around somewhere as well as a few old film cameras.
My favourite is the 1D3 despite being the oldest. I like the look of the images that come out of it. Despite the relatively low resolution by todays standards. Megapixels have never really been a factor for me.
Thanks for that @@ChrisBaitsonPhoto , Great videos by the way 👍🏻
I have a G10. Its been dropped on concrete, and kicked. Soaked in vape liquid and more. Still works perfectly fine.
Greetings from Brazil! Thanks for the video, totally agree. I'm a Canon G16 user. Nice L-Plate, where can I get one?
I just bought a G16, and I am very pleased. I have big cameras, but I love shooting with the point and shoots. I use my G7X more than all my other cameras combined.
Funny enough, I both got a secondhand G12 and a new Nikon Z50. In most days, I found myself taking the G12 more than the Z50 when I shoot.
Again Chris another great video to sit back and relax too. Keep up the good work mate
Thank you Ryan 🤘🏻
Good Morning , I like To know what model l bracket do you uesd on a canon g10 i'm Looking For One I can't Find It Any where , thank you
Without any knowledge of your video i baught a G10 a few days ago. Feels like a brick. Worked not one day. Lens error and focus problems. The lens now ist stuck and camera does not close any more. I don't think it's worse bying... ☺️
Sorry to hear that. Sounds like you got a bad one. Return it?
Got the money back. And i can keep it. Maybe i'll open the camera to look at... 😁
@@osowie9368 give the lens a gentle squeeze...
really if you get these cameras today, i have a canon sx510hs. which is better?
I’d grab the G10. They’re relatively inexpensive.
thanks for answering
I won't say snob lol...digicams are coming 🔙 I love em but I ended picking up a s95..also glad to see a canon user..will be here for more landscape photography
I was surprised by the camera. Location and conditions probably didn’t help this one. Something I’m going to look at picking up next year is a camera like this.
S95 such a wicked camera
@@liekosdawn much tanx fam
does the g10 have a flip out screen?
No G9 G10 doesnt have flip out screen
g10 or better g12?
Grab at G12
Not full frame but is great even g2 take amazing picture
Have you used the G15?
I haven’t used one, no.
these days it's not about the photos or the camera, it's about the reach and community you gather around you
It’s all about the photos and having fun.
Excellent.
I used a canon G10 it was my first camera it was fantastic
📸 bold move to downgrade in image quality & robustness but if your happy, Bingo!!
Ergonomy is better than any phone and it lighter than a DSLM.
Yeah I was quite surprised by how much I liked it tbh. You’re right it’s easier to use than a phone.
G15/16 is better I believe. F1. 8 to F2.
YOU WHAT😂
Just find what works for your purposes. Have a few bodies and lenses for different scenarios, street, macro, landscapes etc. Who gives a fuck. Its about the images overall.
And you dont even need to spend a lot of money.
