"Simon & Simon" is a show I've heard of but had completely forgotten until you mentioned it here. Please cover that show! I suspect a lot of people associate McRaney more with "Major Dad."
Do The Fall Guy ! I Said a hey hey a yey yey ! I might fall from a tall building, I might roll a brand-new car, 'Cause I'm the unknown stuntman that made Redford such a star.
Hell To The Yeah ! “Remember I told you I didn't like getting egg on my face? Well, right now, I'm wearing a whole omelet.” - Thomas Magnum, Magnum, P.I., Season 2.
No one seems to mention that Magnum was one of the only shows to break the 4th wall with Thomas looking directly into the camera (at the audience) and smiling or rolling his eyes. Talk about a balancing act. Dark and gritty one week, a wink and a nudge the next. Not many shows could successfully walk that line!
I love that part and like they say here, the whole noir detective voice over type thing. Not because you need it as an explanation, but imo it anchors the audience in the narrative. Makes you feel like you're there with thomas. BTW, I actually like the theatrical cut of Bladerunner, because it also has a noir style VO. People hate it, but I never considered it condescending. Guess I understood what they were going for.
No one seems to mention that magnum also had a 6th sense where he sometimes simply "knew" stuff for no reason, probably a "plot device" used by lazy script writers, and in general, I am allergic to "magic" but it worked very well in magnum pi I think
@@MonkeyspankO Exactly, without the narration Blade Runner loses that film noir feel, and I don't care what Ridley Scott said down the road, that's exactly what he was going for when he made the movie, a modern film noir, not only is the cinematography film noir style but he also said in interviews back then that's what he was doing. I've been slowly re-watching Magnum, PI for the past three months (currently season on 3) and I love it. Nobody. I mean nobody breaks the 4th wall better than Tom Selleck! It's just great television!!
He did TWO EPISODES like that actually. And in the second one, he comments about getting himself into a similar predictiment. That second episode was when Thomas was investigating an old WW2 airplane. He finds it crashed, on a cliff in the jungle and gets stuck inside when the hull flips over. Once again, he prays for his friends to find him and hopes TC get another bad feeling like the last time. This episode isn't as clever as the first with young Thomas and old Thomas using dad's watch to time themselves, but it does find humor in the odd situations Magnum can sometimes finds himself in!
One of the best 80s series for sure! And from what I have heard, Tom Selleck is a really decent guy! Never watched the remake, 'cause Selleck is Magnum.
Because they are all stars... today, even in sports, they don't allow more than one star... look at the new show, the charisma and star power and chemistry is lacking, Selleck was such a stud, they all were in their own ways... to be a great TV show or movie all the roles need to be filled by stars.
Saw this as a kid in the early 2000s as it was on rerun ok UK tv. To me it’s the best 80s show of all time. Great acting, great chemistry , great stories and it being in Hawaii was the icing on the cake.
I always thought this was an underrated TV show. It still holds up today for me. I was born in 1980 and this is one of the shows I remember watching with my dad when he would get off work about 10 years ago I got the entire DVD set and re-watched all of them still a fantastic show
The way this show could switch from near slapstick to dead serious in the blink of an eye, and the cast could actually MAKE IT WORK. My dad's favorite episode was "Death and Taxes" and to this day I can immitate the killer ("rub a dub dub!") and my wife knows it instantly.
That moment in the Ivan two-parter when Magnum delivers that eerie line then turns and shoots him has stayed with me ever since the first time I saw it. It was proper jaw dropping stuff and extremely impactful.
What I loved about Thomas Magnum as a character was that when he got out of the Navy at the age of 30, he suddenly realized that he was never 20. He completely bypassed all those irresponsible, lazy days that young people experience before they grow up into adults. Living with his friends in paradise and becoming a PI felt like the childhood Thomas never had.
I just finished watching the entire series about a month ago. It’s great, holds up just fine. Great cast, great stories…it’s just good fun. Definitely recommend it. Im 46 so I recall my parents watching it when I was a kid. Top 3 theme songs of all time. That’s the jam right there
My Dad's all-time favorite show (tied with MASH and SPENCER FOR HIRE), it was a real treat for me to narrate this one. Brought back a lot of memories. Thanks again Joblo.
What a nice tribute to an absolute masterpiece of TV. It has been many years since l have watched an episode of Magnum, but all these decades later, l can still remember specific episodes, and also the massive emotional range of the show. There was plenty of light, slapstick comedy, but some episodes went to extremely dark places which have rarely been equaled on network television. And some were just quite meditative and focused on the interior lives of the characters.
That's a very nice summary of exactly why the show really sticks with me after all these years. Every episode had the possibility of showing you something completely unexpected, from farce to romance, buddy drama to dark tragedy; all with strong characters and emotional impact. Unique and iconic.
I bought the complete series on dvd a few years ago. I had caught an episode on cable one afternoon and I was hooked. I was a kid when the show started, but I watched it each and every week with my dad. I was probably 9 or 10 years old when it started so watching it now as an adult really helped me appreciate it more. Plus the 308 GTS was all I could think about when I was a kid.
I was 16 this was back in the 80s shopping at Pollo on Beverly Hills Dr. and I look over a straight ahead of me is Tom Selleck nobody else is in the store or at least on the floor and I just did my shopping and left but I felt like one of the greatest moments ever
I loved watching this show with my grandmother as a kid. Man what i wouldn't have done for a vcr back then. The stakes were so high for watching television back then. If you were lucky you could catch the replay during the off season. The murder she wrote crossover nearly broke me because we never missed that show either and we had a 15 or so minute outage during the broadcast. It was years before i ever got to see it in its entirety. I dont think my grandmother ever did see the whole episode.
I always felt that the show Burn Notice was essentially a reboot of Magnum PI with a sprinkling of MacGyver. Same narration, "job" of the week, help from his friends, etc.
It was such a great series with a great cast! When it come to the 80's, there were so many great series and movies! The 80's were the best time to be a teen!
The episode "Have you seen the sunrise" ending was absolutely amazing. I remember my 12 year old brain nearly exploded watching it! Miami Vice would later have a knock off version of it... but they lacked the balls for outright murder and Sonny's "victim" is seen hiding a gun behind is book. What a total cop out!
It is mentioned on the show a couple of times that Higgins is a former British Army Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) who served in the West Yorkshire Regiment (West Yorkshire being a county in Northern England). As a boy watching the show in the 80s, this really grabbed my attention as that is where I lived. Years later I discovered that Tom Selleck's family on his mother's side all came from West and South Yorkshire, leading me to believe that detail of Higgins' background was created at the request of Tom to recognise and/or honor his family's heritage.
Magnum PI is a genre defining show that spanned an entire decade from 1980 - 1988. It is absolutely must see television that is one of the earliest examples of shared Universes and also included Pop culture references before they became popular in the landscape. Sure he missed out on Indiana Jones, but he did get to play one of the most iconic roles in TV history. Since Tom Selleck played PI Lance White in 2 episodes of The Rockford Files that led to the Magnum PI role, you should cover that or the Fred Dryer starring Hunter from Stephen Cannell (a very different kind of cop show).
I was a kid when this show came out but loved it, it was probably my first intro into serious drama. Thomas finding out his dead wife is still alive, the russian episodes, etc, were so fantastic.
After watching many videos on this channel, I have to say, this one is my absolute favorite! It is so well done and well-written I immediately want to stop everything I'm doing and binge-watch his much Magnum P.I. as I can find. Thank you!
I took the "Magnum" helicopter tour about 9 years ago. It seemed unless you knew of the Magnum Series in detail the pilot pretty much ignored you. We were not that much of a TV watching couple so, yeah, we didn't exist in the pilot's eyes. It was a pretty cool tour, never the less.
This was the GREATEST Tv show of the 80s. The writing was so ahead of its times. I can't believe that with all the sequels around they couldn't make at least a new season of Magnum PI (How the hell did we get a Willow seuquel and not a Magnum PI?!). Years ago I wrote an outline for a crossover episode of Tom Selleck's "Magnum P.I." and "NCIS". Given Mark Harmon's departure, I've an idea of how to incorporate Gibbs, where he could make a guest return if not a complete return to the series.
Magnum P.I. is my second favorite show of all time, behind only IASIP, and it still holds up today. I went back and watched every episode earlier this year, and it was still great all these years later!
Jessica! Bravo! Excellent documentary on the greatest show ever!……props to the editor and narrator too! And yes I been blasting the theme song since Napster was conceived! I have a new red Corvette convertible and drive here on PCH! Lol….what a tool! I know! But it makes me so happy! And that’s what counts! Thank you Tom!
Thanks for the wrap-up! 8:51 Laura is a classic film noir from 1944 directed by Otto Preminger 11:13 That's Angela Lansbury. She played the character of Jessica Fletcher on Murder She Wrote
Magnum was one of my favorites and premiered the year I moved out into my own apartment. I remember my mother would always call during the show. Finally asked her not to call at that hour and she asked why. I told her what I was watching, and she changed the channel to see for herself... And she never rang up during the show again.
The one thing missing from this video was a mention of the episodes of The Rockford Files featuring Tom Selleck as Lance White, a rival private investigator that was kind of an anit-Rockford that drove nice cars and got all the girls, "White On White and Nearly Perfect" (1978) and "Nice Guys Finish Dead" (1979), which also features Larry Manetti as Larry St. Cloud. In the opening moments of the Magnum PI episode "Tigers Fan" (1987), two bad guys were discussing last night's episode of The Rockford Files and the Lance White character, as well as featuring Joe Santos in his recurring role as police lieutenant Nolan Page, along with Rockford guest stars James Karen and Carlos Romero.
Cheers, you've reminded me of how good was while I was grown up. Anything from Mission Impossible, M*A*S*H, Quantum Leap, Happy Days, The Prisoner, To The Manor Bourne, Man About The House - then American's Three's Company, Hogan's Here's to name a few. There was a genuine cultshift in television, life under the Cold War, dictatorship and Apartheid before and after. My brother and I loved shows like Quantum leap and this one. Watching Magnum P.I. reminds me of some the great times we together. Cheers. 🙂
Fantastic review. One of my all time favorite shows as a teenager. As a classic TV nerd I have this and Simon & Simon on DVD. Love re-watching both series.
During my junior year in college, a couple of friends and I would spend every Thursday night eating Top Ramen while watching the two-hour block of "Magnum PI" followed by "Simon and Simon." It helped keep us sane. One moment that has stuck with me was Magnum suddenly realizing that the ocean was filled with "big fish."
One of my all time favorites. I was on Oahu when they were filming the “original” last episode. I was able to see the set up, and took photos of Robin 1 (the Audi 5000) and TC’s VW van. Alas when I got to the commotion, Tom was called back on the set and I didn’t capture him. Others there said he was wonderful and, if I recall, was sitting on the wall eating a bowl of Cheerios! Love it have have the full DVD set.
I did a lot of Navy work at Peal Harbor between 1981 and 1985, traveling from the San Francisco area. One time, possibly in 1983, I was wandering around Honolulu and parked in a grassy area was a Ferrari used in filming. It was really beat up, had holes in the left front fender where a camera mount had been, and the paint was scratched. The interior was in poor shape, carpet was ragged, and there was a lot of sand on the floor. I was disappointed in the condition of the car. The Targa top normally stows behind the seats but it was missing completely. I had my own Ferrari 308GTS at the time, a silver one with black/blue interior which I drove all over NorCal and kept in great shape. It got pretty annoying when I cruised Walnut Creek and people hanging around the bars outside would yell ''HEY MAGNUM''.
I always knew about Magnum PI over the years but didn’t really fully immerse myself into it until about 5 years ago. It’s such a great show that’s fun and serious all at the same time where the main actors are not invincible which makes it more interesting. 🤙
Great piece on an iconic show. Major piece of my youth. Couple of other notes of interest. There was an episode with a young Ian McShane as a former british soldier who thinks he is being hunted by a Zulu. Also loved "Beauty has no Pain" where Magnum does the Ironman. Only they got the distance as well as the order of events wrong.
Much as I say Christopher Reeve was THE Superman, Tom Selleck is THE Magnum PI. I never tried watching the "new" series. I do own the Original on on DVD and re-watch it every once and a while. A 55 year old GenX has spoken.
i dont remember much of Magnum P.I.'s episodes. i just remember this is one of my must watched detective series in the 80s as a kid, along with The A-Team, Hunter, Riptide.
I wasn't inspired by the Magnum series but I did end up living on an island in a small estate and I drive a rare exotic roadster when I leave the place. This is the life for me.
Excellent video. My brother and I spent 4 months in Australia August through November 1985. There was an episode of Magnum P. I. played in which there was a loose theme to the show and a few odd things like a brick popping out of a wall. My brother said I don’t remember seeing this episode back in the US.
Thank you for mentioning the Archer reference to "Did You See the Sunrise". Before this video, I didn't know that scene was a reference to this show. I'm afraid I never saw the two part episode.
I just watched this again a few years ago. It holds up very well. I mean sure, its got the 80's look with the clothes, etc. But the stories, and some of the episodes got very dark, are amazing. I recommend anyone watching it
Just finished Selleck's autobiography. Your video is great 👍 homage to series. 1/2 of book is all about show which he only referred to as 'Magnum' dropping PI.
I remember the first episode, he was driving the Ferrari, a lady - a member of the public asked him about the car and as she was walking away, she said “I’m sure whoever who owns it must be very pleased” (or similar words). I think it was a running gag where people just know he doesn’t own the car or house, boat or whatever.
One episode that haunted me is when at the end he asks TC about whether he still thinks about Vietnam. TC has a flashback, and he then responds; nah. Magnum responds neither did he, even though he does. Heartbreaking,
Do you guys love Magnum P.I? Let us know in the comments and suggest the show we should do next?

I've been doing the same . The storyline remains consistent, the new series jumps around far too much .
Just finished it for the second time. Classic 80s TV and just the right amount of cheese.

Also Hill Street Blues...same era. The HSB theme is so perfectly melancholic/sweet/sad, especially for a gritty cop show.

Towards the end of the series I told my friends, "You know you're getting old, when instead of identifying with Magnum, you identify with Higgins."

The best series in the 80er ❤
Every year when summer begins,i watch all episodes.Wunderful🎉
I had a husband that looked just like Thomas! And I love Magman was my favorite show ever!!!❤
I watched this when it aired back in the day. Still remember how speechless I was. It was shocking to see.
I'm watching season 4 missed some back in the days now I can watch it all over again....
Jessica!
8:51 Laura is a classic film noir from 1944 directed by Otto Preminger
11:13 That's Angela Lansbury. She played the character of Jessica Fletcher on Murder She Wrote
Just bought the series. Thoroughly entertaining!
Great. Thoroughly enjoyed that I'm going to watch Magnum P.I tonight. Original of course
Such a marvellous show
I don't remember much about this series -- except that I loved it.
Cheers. 🙂
One of the GREATEST series oon TV..., EVER.
One of the greatest!!! Love Magnum!
Fantastic review. One of my all time favorite shows as a teenager. As a classic TV nerd I have this and Simon & Simon on DVD. Love re-watching both series.
You would've loved the Simon & Simon crossover episode
@@SnoopReddogg Seen it. Higgins shows up. Love how instead of giving them grief like he does Magnum..he is all in and supports them.
Goddamn. I'm about to go binge Magnum PI right f**king now!
Shared universe baby!
The cool thing about MPI is I always forget it and re-watch it the first time.
I remember getting on the school bus every Monday and talking about what happened in Magnum that episode.
😂I was one of them 50mil ppl to watch that final eps. Loved it!😂
One of my all-time favorite shows
Great piece on an iconic show.
All For One 2 part episode was pure awesome aldo when Simon and Simon did the cross over was great.
i dont remember much of Magnum P.I.'s episodes. i just remember this is one of my must watched detective series in the 80s as a kid, along with The A-Team, Hunter, Riptide.
Well done! Thanks for bringing this one up! ❤️ still one of the best theme songs of the 80s.
I have never heard of 'The Chinese Typewriter' pilot before. Thank you for that gem of info.
I recommend anyone watching it
That's not Annie Potts at the 8:16 mark, that's Kathleen Lloyd, who played Assistant District Attorney Carol Baldwin.
Thank you! At least someone else saw the mistake!
Was coming here to post the same thing.
