This is my orchestral arrangement of "Steiner's Theme" from Final Fantasy 9. The original FF9 soundtrack was composed by Nobuo Uematsu. I tried to create the sense of ambivalence, conflicted duty, stubbornness and deliberation. The song should sound as though it is combative, with vigilant military instincts kicking in reflexively. I wanted to capture the feeling of a morally confused individual who frequently sees the world in black-and-white. On some level, we are all Adelbert Steiner. Very often, the more righteously committed we are to our beliefs and allegiances, the more susceptible we are to manipulation and deception. This track was nominated and voted for by my patrons on Subscribestar. Yay Steiner! He is such an underrated FF character. It's so awesome that you gave him some love! 😊
🍪
You're so good at this ❤️👏👏
Thank you so much! :D
I have the sudden urge to say something after hearing this song...
PRIIIINCEEEEEESSSSSSS
Lol 😂
Come for the delightful music.
Stay for the psychological deep-dive in the description.
That's Rebecca!
There's our stoic, aloof, but kind at heart Steiner 🥰 Great work!
Thanks again!

knights of pluto... assemble!!!
You've always made good things but since a few covers I clearly see an increase in quality of sounds and mixing. I have the feeling you're back at your great creative energy
Hey, thanks for noticing. I also kind of feel like I've levelled up recently. ^_^
Aaah, I really missed your FF9 arrangements Becky! This one sounds like it's from an FF9 anime, in a Steiner-centered episode !😄
I appreciate that! Glad you liked it. ^^
Two things that Square needs to do when they remake FF9! Hire Project Mamoria and get you to work with Nobuo Uematsu on the soundtrack! 👍
Great time to share this beautiful piece! Final Fantasy IX was released July 7, 2000 in Japan, so it is FFIX's 23rd Birthday. Happy Birthday, FFIX! Looking forward to the Remake!
The timing was pure serendipity. I was really happy about that!
"PRINCESS!!!"
*Dramatic armor clashing noises*
I love him so much. I love him so much. I love him so much. I LOVE STEINER SO MUCH!!!!!!!! I wish he was real so I could tell him how much I loved him :
God this brings back so many memories! IMMA GUARD 😂
🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪
"Princess wait!" a banger as usual. :)
Incredible work, as always. I love how faithful it is but still has your own spin added.
Thanks, Blake! It's always nice to hear from you. I just went through The Stanley Parable again recently, hehe!
very nice! here to hoping i live to see a remake one day
This is an often overlooked game in the FF series, but I feel like it's one of the best. In my opinion, not as good as 7, 6 (3 US), and 4 (2 US), but it definitely comes in near the top. I hope you end up uploading a sweet version of the other character themes from FF9. There were so many great characters from this game. It really is all kinds of awesome. Thank ya for al the sweet music you've done over the years, Rebecca! You rock!
It's my own favourite game in the series! :D
This music is so cool, happy but calm at same time.
Epic (with trumpet) and relaxing (with low bpm).
Thanks for this song too !
Thank you so much! 🍪
I feel happy for youtube to start indicating videos like this, I love ff but nothing arrived... then I got the impression that the community is gone... but no, it's still alive and producing! Thank you very much : D
This is fantastic! With each transition and change of instrumentation, you can hear the arrangement swaying back and forth between Steiner's outward appearance of unwavering duty and his inner thoughts and moral turmoil. At certain points, these seemingly conflicting elements meet and we see a clearer picture of who he might really be, and how the unusual circumstances he's been thrown into help him grow as a person. Awesome arrangement!
I really appreciate that. I was definitely trying to do exactly is you described. Thanks!
Imagine you're stealing your sibling's snacks and this is the background music❤
🍪🍪
Been a bit out of touch with OCRemix and whatnot, but very glad to see Rebecca still doin' her thing.
Perfect
When this theme plays in the Ice Cave in FF9 randomizer... you know he's definitely one cold dude! LOL
Love this arrangement
Yes, that's such a hilarious place for that song to come in!
HELL YES! I love Steiner and his theme suits him so well!!
Are you going to do the song that is Beatrix and Steiners theme mixed together? I always thought it was so cool how they mixed the two together and made it sound epic!
Either way, I'm glad to see Steiner not being left out 🥰🥰
Thank you so much. I probably will eventually do Protecting My Devotion, yes!
@@RebeccaETripp I am super excited to see it! Though tbf I'm excited to see whatever you post next.
I am SO very happy about this arrangement.
I was worried when I put it up that the regularness (some might say monotonousness) of the original song would be limiting, but you did exactly what I had hoped you'd do: you played with it, and took it around the world. Early on (0:19), it sounded so much like a Banzo Kazooie track - is that oboe or bassoon heavy?, I know the instrumentation changes for each "world" in that game, but the early levels seem based around a lower-pitched woodwind sound since you start at the bottom of the witch's castle. Then it went back to martial, like the intro. It's a perfect fit for this guy: oh so very serious man with serious duties being serious. But he's incredibly goofy. By 2:01, there's practically a duck quacking. EDIT: Fitting, given the feather.
This IS Steiner. This is even more Steiner than OG Steiner's Theme. Bravissima, Rebecca!!
This makes me so happy! I really wanted you to like it. The duck quacking is muted trumpets, hehe! Any other songs you want to suggest?
One of my favourite video game characters, and my favourite game of all time!
Thank you as always for a lovely rendition! The percussion just fits perfectly with Steiner's personality. Everything you've done with this suits him so well. I may revisit this one very often ☺️
Thank you very much. ^_^
I've never played FF9 but this song evokes a cinema-like vision of a burly but bumbling character, which I'm guessing is reflective of Steiner? It's charming, similar to a track you'd expect in the last 2D films of the 1990s. Still put a smile on my face!
Oh absolutely. Steiner is a knightly doofus and I always thought it was perfect for him
I love the beginning, good reference to his first scene with the pluto knights
Nice work Rebecca! Those sound like fun clarinet lines to play :)
I thought the same thing. Thank you!
Another excellent arrangement! I really like the way you interpreted the synthetic sounds of the original and added some depth while keeping the same emotional qualities. The way you let the different parts of the orchestra add their unique voices really makes the piece feel like a journey. If you don't mind saying, I would be interested to know how you approach the creation of an arrangement like this. How do you select the instruments? How do you decide which parts to assign, and control for dynamics?
On another note, it seems to me like the FF9 soundtrack is the most integrated and motif-heavy of all of Uematsu's soundtracks. I feel like you could play any tune from the soundtrack and I would instantly know it was from this game specifically, even if I didn't recognize the tune at all.
Thank you so much! That means a lot that you took the time to really think about the instrumentation in depth.
To be honest, I often just do it all "intuitively", selecting whatever "feels" right. It's really stream of consciousness for me. That being said, there are a lot of times when I'll choose certain instruments based on some kind of aesthetic or synesthesia related consideration. In my Flower Walzes album, for instance, most of the instruments/melodies/harmonies/patterns were chosen based on the textures/colours/temperatures/consistency of the sound. I tried to recreate the shapes, scents, growing conditions and personalities of the plants. For this track, I was less conscious and just "felt" where the orchestra logically needed to go. There's sort of a mathematical balance to it, I suppose! Sometimes, I'll get a sense like "this is too high, wet and metallic, so it needs to be grounded with a dry, earthy bassoon", or "this feels unbalanced, but if I add this trumpet, then there's a bright, red fire to draw the ear/eye into that empty corner". I hope that makes a certain amount of sense!
@@RebeccaETripp It does make a certain amount of sense, now that you explain it. I think it's wonderful that you intuitively perceive qualities in the sounds of instruments like dryness, earthiness, brightness, and fire. I understand the texture and consistency of sounds, how they can be smooth or crunchy, methodical or choppy, but I've never thought of sound as having color or temperature. I might call a high trumpet "bright", but never before "red" or "fiery". Now that you've said it however, I can "see" those things in the orchestra in ways I didn't before. It's very exciting to learn a new way of thinking about music! I am going to go listen to Ravel's Bolero now and think about the color and temperature of the orchestra's sections. Thank you for sharing your unique vision of music! I look forward to your next creation.
@@courtjester7778 Hope you enjoyed your session! ^_^
Wonderful recreation.
Thanks a lot!
LOVED this: you're a GENIUS! Also I really like the wallpapers/backgrounds of your videos. Have you got downloadable versions?
Thanks! No, I don't upload them anywhere, though I do link to the original art sources I use to make the backgrounds.
