    Onix is actually a masterpiece of design. It has dex entries stating it can circle the globe in 16 hours (timezone changes aside to be assumed) and has multiple instances referencing this (like the mail dragonite zipping around in the first movie) yet it has a base speed of 80. • @Draeckon
      @Draeckon 5 месяцев назад +5

      This means nothing when it comes to the stats. Tons of Pokemon had high Physical or Special they couldn't use due to types being hard-locked to physical or special. The Gengar line also has high special, but all the ghost moves are physical so it never gets to take full advantage of its main stat. Etc, etc.

    • @14akamaru
      @14akamaru Год назад +42

      That's a good theory. I just figured it was based on reaction time, meaning Pokemon that can move fast lore-wise yet have low Speed stats are either slow at processing the command, or are trying to not disobey immediately, causing a pause.

    • @Lockz1111
      @Lockz1111 Год назад +24

      Attack and special attack are some of the least defensible ones, speed is one I think is the easiest to defend because these are combat stats being show not stats for how they move at traveling speed. A lot of super fast things are handicapped by smaller arenas and the like where turning is required more frequently

    • @TheBT
      @TheBT Год назад +22

      Yeah, it has always felt more like reflexes than top speed. A featherweight boxer would have a higher 'speed' stat than a sprinter because they would beat them to the punch.
      The one that I also feel is misrepresented is defence, HP is the stat that determines how much damage something can take and defence is how difficult it is to land a good blow. Whether that be an evasion tank or in a full set of armour. Kartana, very tricky to hit properly but can't take much damage

    I feel like it is worth noting that speed doesn’t mean how fast you can move, it’s more how long it takes to “charge up” an attack. That’s why electrode and regieleki are so fast despite being just spheres, one is a primed bomb, and the other is just made of electricity, no “charging up” necessary, just touch ‘em and it’s used Thunderbolt.

    • @bidoof6458
      @bidoof6458 Год назад +7

      Just want to point out that the examples you gave aren't great. In Pokeathlon, Electrode is one of the fastest pokémon (like, he can roll fast).
      You've also got Pokémon like Accelgore, where it's clear that they're just able to move quickly (as shown in Pokepark 2), which is why they have such speed.

    • @windstar120025
      @windstar120025 Год назад +11

      its not about attack charge its about attack response. A fast pokemon is one that can navigate and respond well to commands efficiently, HENCE electrode and Regieleki, one is litteral lightning and the other is a Sphere is an extreme ease to maneuver and orient itself as needed on a dime. meanwhile a pokemon can fly as fast as a jet plane sure, but that doesn't mean it can stop, orient itself for attack and then start moving again efficiently in a combat scenario.

    • @dariusdrake7515
      @dariusdrake7515 Год назад +7

      My head-cannon on the "Speed" Stat, is that it's more accurate to consider it the "Mobility" or "Recovery to Attack Again" Stat. It's not actually about how fast the Pokemon's maximum distance-over-time is, but how well the Pokemon can react to things around it.
      - Rhyhorn has low speed because if it attacks something, say by tackling it, it takes comparatively forever, say 10~20 seconds, to get back into a position where it can do so again.
      - Vikavolt can move around quickly, but it's special attacks take time to charge up, and it's physical attacks rely on it opening and then shutting it's pincer's.
      - Escavalier is in a similar position to Rhyhorn, requiring time to remove it's arm-lances from whatever they get lodged into, and, with a pair of long sticks stuck to itself, it's kind of hard to maneuverer around obstacles, such as enemies (or trees), to get into a position to properly attack your foes.
      - Varoom has the issues of motor vehicles do, they're great for causing destruction via speed-based impacts, but they need a minute to reposition themselves so that they have a chance to hit you a second time.
      - Veluza, same issue as with Varoom. Great vertical acceleration, poor turning capabilities.
      - Wiglett & Dugtrio may live half-underground, but they are able to move around anywhere, change direction on a dime, and could theoretically, in a game with a completely unrelated set of combat mechanics, attack near constantly in combat.
      This does seem to fit with your explanation, KelKav, it's just more detailed and gives more detailed descriptions.

    Well that was very interesting.
    Just to clarify and redeem some - in pokemon, Speed stat seems to reflect not tthe movement speed of a species, but more of a reaction speed. Whitch means, pokemon with low spd could be really fast movers, just not too keen on correcting their move. Like then chargers charge you in the overworld, whey do it in the straight line, and if you move even a little - whey will just miss.
    Its more reinforced in the battle. Its not that slow pokemon move slover and cause of that use their atack second. Its because both trainers give their command at the same time, but faster pokemon react to the command faster, and executes its move first. So, fast pokemons are basically quick thinkers.
    This theory of mine are quite beaten by the existance of priority moves, so i decided to see speed stat as a combination of the pokemons actual speed and its reaction speed. Now this makes full sese, since, for example, Regieleki couldnt be as fast as lightning - it is not electricity itself, its a golem. Its still a phisical object. But cause of that its "Soul" is made of lightning, its not only fast mover but also has incredibly fast reaction. Same goes for pretty much all pokemon. Speed = is not JUST move speed. Its a combination of all of the pokemons speed qualities, such as quick thinking, strike speed, move speed, and reaction speed. So there are pokemon who are ridiculously fast movers, but cause of them having 3 other qualities very low, whey have their overall speed stat low.

    Also, Nincada's and Ninjask's weird defense stats seem to be references to the life cycle of the cicada in real life. Cicada's spend like 90% of their lives as nymphs that live underground and have harder exoskeletons to protect them from predators. As adults, they only live for a few weeks (compared to years as nymphs). Ninjask's frailness seems to reference how brief an adult cicada's lifespan is, while Nincada's endurance does so for the relatively long time spent as a nymph. And then Shedinja is the leftover shell that looks alive but isn't, hence the Ghost typing and 1 HP.

      Wow. Initiative. That reminds of Dungeons and Dragons. Characters get the stat called dexterity. Then at the beginning of each battle, players figure out initiative. That is the order characters go in while taking turns. Each character rolls a twenty sided dice and adds their dexterity. Then the turn order goes from the highest number to lowest number. It is like speed in Pokemon except more elaborate. Dexterity is used for a lot of stuff in Dungeons and Dragons, as do the other stats. However boosting initiative stands out as the most prominent use. It can benefit all players regardless of class. Some classes do have high dexterity though, such as rogue and ranger.

      Than it makes sense for genesect for example that in plane mode can only go fast in long distances. But other seem to have low speed but by lore high reflexes so it’s still seem random numbers sometimes

    Ninjask is the fastest lore-wise, as its Pokédex entry in Black/White and B2W2 states that “Because it moves so quickly, it sometimes becomes unseeable.” This means that Ninjask needs to be able to travel 38146 mph (fast enough to become invisible), equating to just over Mach 50.

    Maybe it does them in slow motion idk

    to be fair, the speed doesn't have to do with how fast they move, it's more like initiative in dnd than speed. Still though, some of those sped stats were EGREGIOUS for no reason

    I like to think of speed more as reaction time. Like, you can react faster that’s why you attack first, instead of literally being fast.

    An explanation that I came up with to explain the oddity of speed compared to dex entry is that it isn't straight speed but instead agility. Rhyhorn can move pretty fast in a straight line, but it can't turn quickly. Glarian Zapdos can run very fast but as seen in the chase with it it doesn't take turns easily and it must slow down to turn. Dedenne on the other hand can easily turn without losing speed.

    • @MouldMadeMind

      That's just straight up the case, all most all other translations of pokemon call it something like that instead of speed.

    I think that the Pokemon Speed Stat is actually referring to it’s reaction time rather than how fast it can move from point A to point B. Because Speed doesn’t effect if you can avoid - *outrun* - an attack, that’s dependent on Evasion. But speed DOES affect turn order, and in PLA, having a higher speed stat also effects how easily you can get off multiple turns in a row. To compare it to TTRPGs, that’s not movement speed, that’s initiative.

    The Rhyhorn stat is most likely ridiculous since the main character's mom in X/Y, a retired Rhyhorn racer mentions that she she couldn't stop in time and ran into the main character's dad during a Rhyhorn race
