- A tutorial filmed at home on Best Length Short Beard? Watch Me Trim and Compare Each Length.
Trimming styles - what different lengths look like in this comparison video starting from 12mm.
TIMELINE BELOW...
How i filmed this video was in steps of 1mm trims at a time so that you can see the difference of length at each millimetre and then you can decide what is the perfect length beard.
Beard shaver is Philips Multigroom with adjustable guard from none to 1mm - 18mm's.
Timeline for each beard length -
12 mm - 0:46
11 mm - 3:07
10 mm - 5:13
9 mm - 6:05
8 mm - 8:18
7 mm - 10:16
6 mm - 11:40
5 mm - 13:20
4 mm - 15:10
My choice for looks and easy management is 4mm, what is yours?

Hi Rob, great video. For what it is worth I use two lengths on my beard. My beard is not that dense on my cheeks so a 10 mm works best which makes it look thicker. The same length is used for moustache and chin but all under my chin I use 6 mm which gives definition to my chin and does prevent you from looking like you have a double chin.
yeh i have tried varying the sizes on the same place you are talking about. Especially when the hair is longer than the max clipper length then i can experiment different lengths with the scissors.
Thanks mate.
Please like and subscribe - i am buying a new trimmer and will do a review / demo cut soon.
@@Robroscob Thanks Rob, look forward to the update and your review of the new trimmer. BTW, your greying beard suits you.
@@Robroscob rob can you do 18 mm plz
Urs is the best video on beards i watched, many others just give tips, u show it practically and gives us a reference
Awesome mate thanks for watching and subscribing. More beard vids coming in the winter (summer here very hot and sweaty in QLD AU rite now).
Thank you i am just now growing out a beard first time in my life I'm 40 now and i like the look of it on myself however the last 2 times i trimmed it i went to short and your video is the only one i could find that visually shows each mm length i wasn't sure what to go with b4 but now i know my preference is between 6 and 8 mm again thank you this was very helpful
I've had a 12mm beard for years. I think it's the perfect length - not overly bushy to wear I look like a mountain man, but long enough to never be confused with stubble.
However, if you're looking to keep your face warmer in the winter, I highly advise growing your beard out longer. For that purpose, I would say a 25mm beard, which an inch and takes 2 months to grow, is a good starting point.
still summer here in Ausrtralia..as soon as winter approaches ill be growing what you suggested
When you say ow it doesn't look like you are in pain...my favorite part of the vids. Thanks for the reference vid.
sometimes the trimmer pulls out hairs instead of cutting them.. especially when it gets clogged
I used to love 5mm but this year I’ve gone to 10mm and over. Great vid
I usually do similar in winter...quite warm climate where i am at so winter here only lasts about 2 months so can get to about 20mm length just in winter.
In my experience as long as you have thick beard hair, you can go from 2.5mm to 4mm and look good. If you have blonde or thin hair you should keep the stubble a little bit longer. Anyway your beard looks good at any length. Cheers
thanks champ
Thanks dude. This vid is perfect, super helpful. Exactly what I needed
Most other videos waste our time and are full of other BS we don't want to know. But your vid is straight to the point 👍
For me it’s 11mm. I’m 34 and have a very young face. Without my beard, I’ve been told I look like I’m 22. So finally decided to let me beard grow and loving it.
Yeh... i was the same at your age i looked young when i blade shaved. Now i'm 49 i actually want to look a bit younger so when my beard shows white (mainly on the sides) i trim it back to stubble.
I searched so.much but only u gave a right video thankyou 😃🙂🍀
ok good..thanks
I trimm my own to 5 mm all the time,it's easy to maintain, stylish, and very noticeable but not too in your face, best length for me,I don't like how I look with a longer beard and I also hate shaving since it irritates my skin and I'm also a bit lazy to want to do it,but a 3 mm stubble is a bit too short for my preference so the 5 is the best alternative to all problems
yes..i like not having to shave all the time too.
For years I have maintained between a 0 - 4, maybe 5mm max, but I'm currently in the process of going longer, I think I'm about 10 or 11mm length at the moment.
I like the 6mm beard lenght on you man not too short or long.
yeh thanks... if only i could keep it that length and not have to maintain it so often
A number 4 looks good not to thick not to short and it grows out well.
Just need to clean up around the edges.
I use a number 4 when I do it myself and it does the job for me.
yeh i like to leave it natural but you say clean it up...Might try that next. Thanks for watching. Subscribed.
I usually go from about 7 mm down to 4 mm once a week. If I try to keep it longer, it becomes harder to manage because my strands get curly so my shave gets inconsistent. Based off your video, I’d prefer 9 to 12 mm, but mine looks bad on me when I do that.
theres always a 'messy' stage. You might have to keep growing a little longer to find out if it neatens up
Very nice video your beard looks good at 6mm...👍🏻
i'll take note of that...thanks mate!
Thanks for this video! I've been trying to figure out the best way tot rim my beard while maintaining the overall shape and size of it. I'm always too short and was using small scissors to trim my mustache but I might try my trimmer with a higher mm guard.
I may just be the only one who liked ALL the lengths! Great Vid!
thanks mate!
I keep mine at 3mm and I thought it was enough but on you I think 5mm is the minimum. But considering our beards about the same color I think I’m going to let mine go to 5. Thanks for the video - that was cool.
5 is also less maintenance than 3
Nice vid robbo...got a corona beard goin on atm time for a trim now so this vid as helped me decide what length to go...decided to start at 12mm and like you keep going until I'm happy..cheers mate 👍
Yeh thanks mate..i got myself a new trimmer so growing mine out and i will do another similar video (but clearer) with my new trimmer. stay tuned ok.
I find it difficult to go over the middle part of my moustache with these longer clipper guards as my nose is in the way.
I grew a full beard several years ago. It proved to me much more maintenance than just shaving every day. So, I prefer long stubble when I decide to grow facial hair.
you wouldn't have to touch a beard everyday not even every week. i like stubble also.
Thank You Uncle this video help me a lot😍.... love from India🇮🇳
awesome! thank you
I like 9mm. I kept it at that almost all summer like that and it's a good short beard length.
yes and it's a length that you can maintain with a trimmer because most have up to 9mm.
@@Robroscob
how do u maintain bald look, with no guard trimmer ?? I mean frequency of shaving/trimming head ??
I don't like to shave during winter, so wanted to know how to keep bald look with trimmer ?
@@ssheikh3598 i use a different shaver to this one.. After a few nasty cuts over the years using a blade i starting using the the Braun series 3 a few years ago. (see it at the end of this vid or my latest beard vid - ruclips.net/video/869BjaaEZI0/видео.html)
I use the Braun series 3 every 2-3 days, less if staying home and right before a nite out etc. It's easy, can use it without mirrors and while watching tv or whatever just by feel and never any nasty cuts.
i Robroscob, thanks for posting this video... I enjoyed your "punk rock" attitude to beard styling as a refreshing difference from the more usual RUclips presentation of meticulously crispy barber shop beard trimming. :-D
Frustratingly, it seems like your camera was more intent on focusing on the plants than you, so dunno what was going on there? Anyway, your showing the step-by-step reduction in grades is relatively uncommon and shows the difference a couple of millimetres can make when it comes to facial hair styling (size matters, I guess :-)
Seems like pretty much any length of beard works for you but 9mm and 4mm seem to be sweet spots...
yeh thanks Colin..i have a new camera now. I have a 'Movember' beard / moustache video with a better camera, in two parts first one is uploaded and the next at the end of Movember when the mustache has grow a bit more. Thanks again.
9mm/ Interesting. I dont think any other subscriber has said 9mm. Cheers mate!
Thank you Rob ! awesome video. First time I am trying to grow a beard in this quarantine and your video was so so helpful !
I personally think that number 7 ( 7mm) suited you. It was a tough choice between 7mm and 4mm. But I felt that if you have to keep a 4mm beard then might as well shave it off or darken it.
So well, my vote for you goes to 7mm :)
Thanks once again !
Great thanks mate!...i just bought a new trimmer and i'm waiting for a bit of length to do a demo video (stay tuned). Looked at your channel but you have no video? Would have liked to watch your progress. Ok anyway take it easy out there.
Thanks for very practical real-time video. In my opinión #6 looks good on you (stubble look) due to salt & pepper stage of your beard. #3-4 is more like the "5 o'click shadow"......Thanks again.
Great feedback brother. I just bought a new trimmer. Will do another video soon. Thanks mate!
Best video I seen on RUclips I might go with the 8 mm this summer.
great choice Randy.
This was very helpful my dude. Thanks a lot.
thanks mate!
Great reference video - thanks for sharing! Would you mind dropping the name of your trimmer? The one I have isn't as versatile when it comes to lengths and I've been looking for a new one for months. Thanks!
The trimmer i used in this vid was a Philips Multigroom. Each length just clicks out. I do have a new beard and stubble trimmer that i would recommend.
A Philips Beardtrimmer Series 3000 Beard & Stubble. My particular one has 2 attachments. From 0.5 mm's to 10mm's in 0.5 cuts and then the other attachment has 10-20mm in 1 mm steps.
I will do a demo / review on the new Philips soon.
I have a vid coming up soon where i dye my beard sliver so stay tuned more beard vids coming soon. Thanks for watching.
@@Robroscob Oh wow thanks! I'll check both out and keep an eye for those vids! :)
I like the 8 mm trim . Thank you .
ok cool...i have a new video coming up soon at 10mm to stubble.
Such a big help, thanks man. Subbed!
Excellent Rudy..thanks
Been going through cycles of growing and shaving...I need to commit more. My facial hair is light/blonde/ginger so I reckon a longer length works better for me.
Checked out your channel but i don't see your beard. Great playing btw. Subscribed!
@@Robroscob ah thanks man, yeah I need to give it at least 60 days instead of shaving so soon. My hair doesn't show up so well because it's lighter so I need to grow it longer.
Any tips on how to connect the mustache with the beard? while my right side is perfect my left side its still not there and its annoying, i had this problem since i start growing beard and over 10 years later its still there, people say it will come with age but I'm 33 and it's still not coming
I like to keep mine at a 5 but I can go as short as a 3 and that's the minimum length I would ever go any shorter than that and it doesn't look good I like a 5 cause it's thick enough to hide my bad skin I have dandruff I can't seem to get rid of and makes my skin all red
Nik..have you tried Argan oil for your dandruff? Pure Argan oil. Give it a try. Good for skin. Good for beard. Reduces big pores on my nose. Also doesn't clog pores. Good for close shaving my bald head with electric shaver. I get it in a 250ml bottle here - www.ebay.com.au/itm/274143767834?var=575400500217
I keep mine trimmed at 12mm I want it low but not too low I wanted a length I could still comb it some
nice
I went 3mm from a full beard and hated it, 6mm is okay though, I think too short looks like you just forgot to shave.
yep...starts to neaten up at 6mil right?
Does that mean, the greater the number the smaller it will cut the hair???
yeh
Thank you for this video! I was trying to find something to show me each length for my husband and this was perfect. First off you're very handsome, second I like 7,6,5 on you with 6 being my favorite. And yes I realize this video is 2 years old.
ok ok knock it off. i'm still doing vids now and then. check out my latest.
4mm great rob
oguz yes..my length i maintain right now
Nice helpful video....do you do any trimming/lining on your cheeks near the nose or above the mustache?
Thanks Raja....i like the natural look...also the less maintenance the better..i do have a few hairs high up on my cheeks that are random so i either shave then right off or pluck them out..When the growth gets about 5mm it can be a bit tickly under my nose so i sometimes just shave the whole mustache area back to 1mm or use my small curved scissors and trim it off at the top under my nose. On my Braun series 3 electric it has a straight trimmer on the back that i sometimes use also if i want it more manicured. Thanks for the comment...i will do some more beard vids soon
You should only trim your beard with the grain, not against the grain. With the grain is more consistent, and less likely to "gouge" the beard in spots.
I used to do that but it gives an uneven cut
I haven't shaved in 2 months so I will give this a try
ok diego...thanks mate
I trim mine to uzi nine millimeetah
I liked and subscribed.
You are the best!
Bro for Square face shape which beard style is better ..
tapered from top of cheeks down...short on the sides getting longer towards chin. Checkout / search 'dan bilzerian beard' on google images
You in Australia?
Doing my son's hair for the first time. He is 1!!! This helped so so much being I only have a 9mm and 12mm so I am hoping with my scissor skills I can hopefully have it bled d good. If not his whole some piece is gonna be 9mm 😂😂😂😂
Don't worry too much, it will grow back if you mess it up. Glad my video helped. Thanks.
i tryed 3mm beard and its like 5 o'clock shadow my beard to weak?
keep growing it
Just trimmed my beard from 5 inches to 9mm....it's weird to look at but feels better.
yes! you will feel a bit naked for a while.
rob can u tell me borders in mm with stubble and heavy stubble and short beard
stubble for me is just using the guard on lowest or 0. a few days later heavy stubble 2 - 4mm's. decent short beard 12mm's + in about 1-2 months
Hi man great vid
Do you or anyone here know what's the best beard to someone with a strong jaw?
Should I even grow a beard?
I know it may seem silly but hear me out
I have a strong jaw but I like beards so is a bit of a dilemma to me cuz with a beard I feel like I'm wasting my jaw by hiding it.
Any thoughts?
Your so vain brother
@@Robroscob guilty 😔😔
haha
i'm the opposite.... i got no jawline and a really thick neck
@@Robroscob I was like this too but I've lost 120 pounds and found out that my face is actually square and I have a sharp jawline. I always been obese so I always thought my face is round you know. But I really like my beard so who cares about my jaw so Beard it is.

no..thank you
I like it 4mm
4 mm IS PERFECT.

Thanks a lot! This video was very useful🙏
ok great Ludmila...thanks for watching
Which machine is that? Is the guard levels built in??
its a philips multigroom.. it has a guard with sizes 1-18mm's that attaches and moves away from the blade for the size. you can take the guard off.
i have an improved model that i use now..check my latest beard vid .
6-5 looks cool
yes..starts to get neat
Thank you
ok..thank you! too
Hey mate what trimmer are you using?
Philips Multigroom
It has from 1-18 mm guard sizes. It is cheap but it does the job. I purchased it in the Philippines because i was living there at the time and it was the only one available (they don't have a lot of range in Phil).
i cant decide robroscob can u help me i have long face but cant decide 4 or 5mm i think 4 is great but still not sure what u prefer for me? i dont wanna stubble longer then 5mm . I tryed 2.5mm and its like clean shaven idk why it is like that.
how do i know what you look like? if it's thin you will have to grow it out more.
I like the short. In summer i take mine down and then don’t touch for 3 to 4 weeks
yeh i do the same too. Winter here in Australia right now so growing mine longer and will do a new video reviewing my new clippers when i get some decent growth. Stay tuned ok?
Do you mind linking the trimmer?

10 or 9mm suits best 👌🏼
Yes!...over the winter here in Australia i've been growing for 6 months so it's quite long. Might go back to around 10mm for summer.
It was a useful video

@Robroscob Great Job...!!!
4mm 👌
yes...easy to maintain or leave for a few days... no problem
The shorter you go, the better it looks
