thank you for this video, skiing and snowboarding are sports and passions for many people, knowing how to identify the situations where you can go fast and where you have to slow down is essential, so let's share the mountain and above all wear the protections. when I see advertising videos made by brands where people don't wear helmets, it annoys me a bit.

That’s what I was just about to say. I know I came here to peep out that disk, but I figured this comment section would be peppered with comments about it, but I guess they’re just checking out certain sections of the video or just so focused on the snowboarder and what he’s saying that they didn’t catch it, but that UFO is about as clear as it gets for a camera shot.

Great video Malcolm as always. I think a video on riding icy terain would be very helpful as i fine my self struggling on it even after 15+ years of riding. Im talking about this icy ,scraped terain you find usually in busy days and feels like you cannot moove the board under your feet. Thay anyways.

Hi Malcom really appreciate what you do! Your channel is awesome and do not stop to create more interesting videos. Something that will be interesting for me and have some struggles with it is changing the leading foot. Did you ride all day long on the same leading foot or you change it regularly. As a beginner after a couples of hours of riding on red tracks sometimes I feel it weak and tired more than the back foot so I need to change the leading foot. Could you make a video about this topic and I am sure it will be interesting for others.

I may just do that soon! In the meantime the first video I link to in the description kind of covers easy runs, more with up unweighted turns and posture, and less so with pedalling, but still, it's a good place to start!

Definitely check out his 'how not to catch an edge' in the meantime. It clearly shows when to change an edge, which is based on the direction your board is traveling.
@@JackOfTrades12I have watched it and it was very helpful, but I'm still a bit catchy when I transition between edges - especially my back leg - hence my original question to Malcolm regarding pedaling. I'm sure I just need more mileage on the slopes to fine tune the movement, but some technical details about timing during transition might be helpful 🙂
Hi Malcom, I’m a new instructor here at Vail. I’ve been using all of your techniques to teach my students and I constantly refer them to your channel so thank you! Could you possibly make an “intro to moguls” video? I know the progressions are to start out traversing across and then gradually narrow that traverse down but I want to know the more technical approach on what’s going on with your body (fore/aft pressure, etc.). Thanks again!
Moguls are not for snowboarders.
Glad they're helping, yeah I need to get to a moguls video soon, I'm just very busy teaching at the moment that when I do get some time off I can't bring myself to go and hunt out a mogul field! Basically you'll do a terrain unweighted turn which is a down unweighted turn over the top of the mogul. You need to use your front foot to almost mould the board around the top of the mogul to keep it in contact with the snow during the edge change 👍

Hi Malcolm, as a newbie to boarding, I had just got the hang of linking my turns, thought I was awsome, then fell, badly! Broken ribs and face! My confidence is now slightly shattered but it’s only made me more determined since Iv recovered. Any advice on how to regain confidence on your board and is it normal to be regular on the pommer and goofy on the slope? Many thanks for your awsome videos, I can’t stop watching them!👌😎

Hi Malcolm, I'm planning on getting a splitboard and venturing into backcountry next season. But first I need avalanche training and safety gear. I'm willing to travel just to train at a reputable academy, so that I can learn from hands on experience rather than text book information. I know you survived an avalanche yourself so I'd really appreciate a video on avalanche safety, essential gear and maybe recommend an avalanche training course in France?
Only been snowboarding for less than a week but your videos have helped a tonne! I even got down a red today. Was on the run on the glacier in les deux alpes and got caught with a nasty crosswind that made me catch an edge a couple times and slam hard, any tips on how to change your riding at all to deal with strong wind?
Hi malcom :D first of all im loving your vids and they give me so much more confidence in my snowboarding. I would like to ask you if it's possible you do a video on how to keep correct posture during simple tricks, like hitting sidehits, buttering tricks, going off a box. I want to add more tricks to my riding but i'm struggling with this and more specifically the landings haha.
Often in tricks you might counter rotate to get the board doing one thing or another as in this video:

But generally on the landing you'll want to try and bring your shoulders back in line and knees nice and soft!

Hey Malcolm I was wondering if you could do a video explaining what types of turns would be best for doing straight airs off of jumps such as down unweighted or up unweighted turns? I feel like having a solid foundation to rely on could improve my skills drastically, and could help give me an idea as to what types of turns I should do for certain tricks I choose to learn in the future. Any feedback would be much appreciated. Love the videos! keep up the great work!
I'll get to some more park stuff in the spring time when the jumps soften up a bit. But you don't really need to worry too much about up unweighted or down unweighted for those. It is more just getting your line in correct. For small jumps you can just ride in on a flat base, and land on one too. Then you can work on actually jumping more off the lip and sucking your legs up in the air. As you start to move onto bigger jumps it can be good to start taking off slightly on your toe edge to give you more control of your line as you approach. And you can also land on your toes and then roll to a flat base to help absorb bigger landings. 👍
Hello Malcolm, is there any technique to ride at Trees? Perhaps counter-rotation?
Its necessary to be able to change direction fast and somehow control your speed but the path width is limited.

Malcom!! I've been learning this season how to snowboard and it's unlike any other sport I've done before. Your videos have been so helpful, to myself and my partner who has been snowboarding for nearly 20 years. Thank you!!! You mentioned in your video with two beginners that one of them was burning out her calves/legs because she was using her legs to lift her toes and heels. I'm doing the same right now and can't seem to get out of the habit. Do you have any exercises or tips for visualizing kicking this habit? Are my boots too loose? I want to knix a bad habit before I get further in my learning. Thanks a ton. :)
Hey Lauren, glad the vids are helping! If your boots are too loose or really soft then you won't be getting much response when you lean into them. But that would mean that it's probably not that you're tensing your calf muscles to lift the heel, but you might just be over stretching them by resting in a position you're not used to for holding. It's always good to just practice the position with the board off and then you can really feel what you're doing. The boots should be pretty snug against your shin, and have a bit of rebound in them too. 👍

Loving your work. Something I'd love to get better at is riding with one foot in the binding, e.g. After exiting the chair lift or skating between flat sections. I find as soon as it gets a bit steep, I lose all control and have to emergency stop. Help!

Do you have any tips on predicting other people, and how to position yourself to pass them?
Remember the person below always has the right of way, even if they're making erratic turns, so give them a wide berth. As for predicting where they will go, it isn't always easy, but you can usually spot if an edge change is about to happen, and therefore a change in their direction. Also don't get yourself squeezed out. For instance if someone is close to the edge of the piste, don't try and overtake them in that small gap, because if they start to move closer to the edge then you'll get pushed off the side! 👍

My 3 rules....keep pace if youre following someone
Be intentional where you are going
Dont stop in the middle of paths, get off to the side as best as you can, but stay in clear view
Some people stop in the middle of paths because they are extremely uncomfortable on those flats. They should definitely get over, but some of the beginners get so uncomfortable, they don't think all the way.

sup brotha, I know it's off topic, but I was wondering what your thoughts are on positive angles on both bindings. I see a lot of Japanese riders who carve hard having positive angles on both bindings. I ride 15 -12, but I'm curious.

Thanks for this. But have a question: how to manage on the icy (from top to bottom) snow? I've been in Austrian Alps when there were extremely difficult conditions: no fresh snow for many weeks, just old snow warmed by sun every day and frozen every night. You could almost see yourself in it like in a mirror during entire ride.
Yeah, those type of conditions suck. What my Ausbilder told me is that using short radius turns, with explosive up-unweights. In ice your edges don't grip, unless there is some serious amount of pressure put on to them. This you do by explosive up unweighting your edge, but it's very dependant on the terrain you ride and how well you can engage your edges.
You can also straightline send it and pray for the best :')
When it's really really icey that does suck. You can try and dig your edge in, but unless they are razor sharp, most of the time you will just slide out. Actually dialling back your edge angle in the snow and just making very skidded turns can sometimes be easier. They don't look great as you are pretty much going diagonal side slip to diagonal side slip, but if you gotta get through the ice, sometimes it is all you can do!

Malcolm, my board is 285 wide, but I still boot out. Should I use risers? I like to go fast and carve hard. I'm Worried risers could affect my stability at speed. Do you know of any manufacturers that go wider than 285?
Check out Ryan Knapton. He uses a custom wide board. His boards are made by Donek.
Yeah as Mark says, not many options above that. I think neversummer have also started making super wide versions of their boards too, worth checking out. Risers suck so ideally you don't want to use them. You nust have very big feet though if you're booting out with a 285 waist width!

I'm transitioning from longboarding and I'm not sure how to fall on a snowboard. I'm used to rolling out of my falls, but I can't do that on a snowboard. Any tips?
It's better to lean too much into a turn rather than not enough. Not enough can cause you to catch an edge which will always hurt. If you lean in too much the worst that will happen is that you slide out. On snow and ice you can slide with your falls making them way less worse than falling on a skateboard. Just watch out for putting all your weight down onto one wrist or arm, try and take it more to the body and slide with it 👍
