  • Improve your snowboarding turns and snowboarding technique by employing 'Torsional Twist' into your riding! In this video I teach you how to become a better snowboarder by using your knees and ankles properly. This important technique is often used by beginner snowboarders when they start learning, but then forgotten about as they progress. However it is very important when creating grippy short radius turns on your snowboard.

Sure thing, I will try and do that over the next couple of weeks. The movement in this video of using your feet and knees independently is essential for short turns. The second key ingredient is getting an early edge change before the fall line, so that you are achieving grip early in the turn, and not just skidding it around.

@malcolmmoore I love your videos. You explain things in a very natural and easy to understand way. I was wondering what your opinion is on board length and rider weight - do these play much of a role or it is just technique and a lighter rider can get away with a longer board? I am 180 cm and 63kg riding 157 medium-flex board. I never manage to create than thin line no matter what angles and forward lean I choose. The board just skids. Looking at the board specs the 157 Burton Process board requires rider weight of 61kg to 79kg which makes me only 2kg above the minimum required. What is your take on length when it comes to lower weight? Thanks!

    A little summary for myself:
This video is a detailed study into maximizing the use of torsional twist in order to accomplish low friction and tight turns.
    prerequisites: good posture
Video starts with ineffective tight turns:
    1. MM revisits the beginner drill called falling leaves.
    - focus on using knee lever action to accomplish the drill. just use one knee lever.
    2. S turn: use the second lever once your board is pointed down the hill to switch to toe slide.
To fix the skid and make the turns more high performance.
    1. add a 2-4 second traverse between each turn.
1a. this gives speed. greater speed allows you to switch edges more and more before the fall line (due to centrifugal forces). this allows you to have grip a high fraction of the time, which is a requirement of high performance snowboarding.
    2. eliminate the traverse for quick tight turns.
    keys to focus on:
    - no skidded or washed out turns.
Issues I had on my first day:
    - my toe side traverses end up skidded for a couple seconds when I first get into it. Maybe because I'm weighting my back leg out of fear? my posture is probably all wrong too.
    Takeaway:
    - make sure feet are evenly weighted
    - focus on spine position over edge.

I've one more question about posture while riding. Does it matter if I tilt my pelvis foreward or backwards while being on the edge? To me it felt somehow better to tilt it backwards on the toe edge. Or isn't there a right or wrong?

Unfortunately the dweeb rides goofy and did not switch the video x axis to show the same thing in regular..... nuts! it would have been so easy to do!. Used this today to refresh myself. Went boarding for the first time in 10 years. Felt like I'd never been away after a few runs. Only problem I have is I feel like I'm relying too heavily on my back foot and need to trust the board more. But happy with today! Great vid. Thanks.

Also. Prior to getting board about 4 years ago I lost my main career I got really sick and not as active. Because of being sedentary or standing I developed in wanted curves in the spine. Yesterday. Because of boarding and the added mobility my back popped multiple time throughout the week. My back is straight again. My balance is much better. I can walk over 450 feet on a pipe that's 4 inches in diameter and in places 5 feet off the ground. The balance and motion has really helped. I have a background in flipping when younger but it had been over a decade after an injury.

Man that sounds tough, I broke my back about 9 years ago and it was about a 3 year recovery with a couple of big operations, back pain can br the worst. But try and keep motivating yourself, doing rehab, stretches etc, and hopefully things will improve! Sounds positive so far though 👍

Malcom, great channel! Lots of very good instruction videos and explanations! Unfortunately Alpe d'Huez is a bit to far away for me 😞 I love your lever analogy and dry run exercise. My snowboard teacher back years ago explained it by foot movement but your lever visualization is much easier to understand from my point of view. Along with your open/close door visualization it created a four step mantra in my head "open - door - close - door" which I will remind when practicing your posture drills with ski pole. Good to have your beginner and advanced snowboard tips playlists in advance before I hit slopes again in two weeks 🙂 But there's one thing I still struggle with: sometimes in steeper choppy terrain I'm "over steering" my backside turn (no issue front side), pushing my back leg way too long and too much lean aft (already seen your videos on back leg potential and before/aft lean). Leading to slow down a lot as I often face slightly uphill, loosing my line and rhythm. I know it's hard to rate it on distance without any video or such. But maybe you have an idea of what I'm doing wrong in case it's caused by a "general reason" like wrong posture, stance (riding +15/0). Or maybe you know some corrective drills 😉
Finally, I like to watch your riding style but as soon as Indy is appearing I'm distracted and watch him. Great dog! Going to send you a tip for going out and get him a goody.

    • @malcolmmoore
      @malcolmmoore  Год назад +1

Hey Olly, thanks for the support and I appreciate the tip, it will go staight to some treats for Indy 🐕😁
As for the oversteering, it's difficult to say without seeing you ride. It could be a bit of counter rotation, check your arms stay in line with the board and the back arm isn't coming out at the end of the turn. It could be too much weight only on the front foot. Or something else! If it's not happening on more mellow slopes focus on what you're right there, and see if you can take those movements onto steeper slopes!

Malcolm. Wow. I tried this today and it really brought my turning up so much! I come from a surf, skate and water ski background. I've been doing those since I was 8 years old and was even competing on an amateur level in skateboarding and water skiing. I surfed triple overhead waves when I lived in southern California. I moved to Switzerland and started snowboarding late last year. When I got off piste at the end of the season, the whole thing opened up. I was surfing again. But I didn't know how to work with the bindings. They seemed to prevent me from letting my feet guide the board. I've been listening to other RUclipsrs and nothing has helped more than this video right here. We got some fresh snow and the slope closest to home was closed, so I hiked up and tried this. Wow. I am suddenly on the next level. Thank you Thank you Thank you.

Isn't this technique more dangerous (easier to catch an edge) than just twisting your upper body a bit (head/shoulders) and leveraging weight to front foot to turn? What's the pros of your technique over mentioned except slightly faster board response?

    • @malcolmmoore
      @malcolmmoore  Год назад

You can catch your edge if you do it wrong yes, but with your technique mentioned you won't be able to make more advanced moves like carved Edge wiggles for instance. I go into all this stuff a bit more in my most recent video 👍

This video shows that I can slow down a lot and still change edges successfully to figure out the balance and get comfortable before going further on each edge. Thanks!

So many teachers gloss over falling leaf like it's bad. Most don't even spend time on toe side. Getting a student to master both sides like this will lead to a seamless teaching of turns.

at about 3 minutes, when you say "pull the leaver back" when doing a toes turn, does that mean all the way back so one foot is on heels, or so that one foot is neutral?

    • @malcolmmoore

All the way back I think, I didn't watch the section, but yeah you pull your knee over the board to pull it from heels to toes or vice versa in one movement to change edge

Marvin, thanks for breaking this down... as an advanced snowboarder I remember when I discovered this by accident and began making it a more conscious part of my riding(it may have been learning powder when I was forced to subtly initiate my turns)... What a game changer! But my question is, I am going to buy a new snowboard... the one I am looking at is a Burton double dog tree family board.... I am coming off of a very flexible board and expect this one to be stiffer(mine is an old ride control from 2000)... I am worried I will lose some of my torsional twist and ability to quickly steer through the trees in the powder?? What do you think?

My kids are not snowboarders by any means, but they desperately wanted to play with/learn to snowboard on our local sledding hills. This snowboard is perfect. It seems to be made well; is sturdy. The price was very reasonable for something we're just playing with. I will definitely buy two more; I initially only bought one for my 3 kids to share, just to make sure I liked it well enough.

However, I found a problem that i can't figure it out myself, which is I can't put my weight on the front foot, even i can feel my gravity is shifting to the front but still not feeling my front foot is taking control. Always back foot feeling exhausted.

my first time snowboarding was surprisingly easy. not because I'm some prodigy or beginners luck, but because of the physics shown in this video^ and all my years beforehand riding a Ripstik.
that was about 10 years ago and i've since used Ripstiks to teach my friends the basics at home so we can make the most of our time ($$) on the mountain. Being based in Florida (contrary to popular belief, it doesn't snow here), caster boards and practicing torsional twist are probably the best tools to build a foundation for snowboarding on the cheap.
