I do like these exercise/drill videos, Malcolm. Some days I spend the entire day just repping a single run, trying to improve my technique (I’m just past beginner, doing my first blues, and trying not to get bad habits). 52 years old, and thanking you for teaching me how not to catch an edge :) Thanks!

Bro, awesome you're still doing this. I'm 46 now and only recently decided to get into this sport. This will be my 2nd season. Like you, I spent a good amount of hours each day doing drills. And finally, finally I got to that moment. As Malcom mentioned in another video, the moment you feel that carve and your edge gripping, it's like magic. Even more crazy is taking your board and literally surfing down the run. A great feeling. For me, with the powder I'm just imagining like I'm surfing the waves back and forth while doing my s turns. Low and on the edge short and wide S turns. An amazing feeling and fun. Still doing drills for the goofy side so I can ride switch for even more fun. Helmet saved my life and the butt pads saved my tail bone. I fell twice from catching heel edge, falling backwards. Make sure the gear is quality. My tail bone suffered bruising the first time with some cheap padded shorts. I upgraded to a better one and the second time I fell hard, saved my butt despite it being bruised still. I dont know how old you feel, but stay safe and wear protective gear at all times.

One thing that really helps when trying to clean up your carves is to listen. The more you skid your turns, the louder they will be. Try to make your turns as quiet as possible, while thinking about tilting your body over each edge like a metronome. As you transition between edges, pay attention to what you feel in your front boot. You should feel it press along the outside of your foot from pinky toe to heel as you change edges. If you ever feel the boot pressing against the inside of your front foot (your arch), you're likely leaning back towards the tail too much. Great video as always Malcolm!
Love drill videos. Been riding for 10 years but wasted so much time just aimlessly going down the mountain instead of actively trying to improve my technique. Last year I took my first steps towards becoming an instructor. It was basically the first time I had a teacher and they completely changed my perception and view on snowboarding. Been focusing much more on fixing bad habits and improving overall stance, switch riding, carving etc. I've always loved snowboarding but theses past trips have definitely been the most fun I've had on a board. I still catch myself going into tunnel vision and just speeding down slopes from time to time but I usually always have a goal while riding nowadays. Your videos help a lot! Keep up the good work :)
This is fantastic video! I learnt how to snowboard thanks to you, got confidence on red slopes in Austria and I really want to be better in doing curving, jumping, changing sides etc. Your videos are always so good, I feel that when I go to a piste I can squeeze the maximum out of me, from what i've seen in your videos and that makes me a better snowboarder. Big thanks, once again
I love the edge pop addition at the end of the falling leaf! 20+ years I've been an instructor and what I love most about that time is how I'm continually learning new ways to help others learn. Thank you for a great vid.
Thank you for this. As a newcomer to snowboarding late in life (starting in late 40s) who rarely gets in enough time, I always feels like each year I'm starting from the beginning. This will be bookmarked and a reminder for me each time I get to the hill. Cheers!

I’m an advanced snowboarder, I’ve been doing this a lot of years and can ride anything, but I still like to make some time to do your drills to freshen up my style. Keep making the awesome videos!
Same here! Next week I'm going to Canada to start my 25th year snowboarding, but I still watch Malcolm's videos to see where I'm going wrong. I know I've picked up some bad habits and he shows me how to get back into line 😁
dolphin turns are big, especially when you combine them with moguls (using the ollie in the trough to 'slap' the next mogul with the tail of your board, sending you up and over the bump rather than forward out of control). not great at it yet, but every one in three or so feels dope!
That's the only one out of the list that I can't do. 🤔 It's always too busy, or the conditions aren't idea, so practicing it is almost impossible on holiday. If I could make it to an indoor slope, I'd try it though.
I dont understand the people... at 9:31 what was the concept of the black cloth rider? It was fully visible for a long time you turn there. In the low speed carving part a skier almost hit you. Otherwise very helpful video! Congrat again!
Malcolm, I have been self-learning snowboarding and your channel is the best of all. I’m so grateful this trip I finally mastered Carving by watching your videos. Definitely I will recommend anyone who wants to self-learn snowboard to your channel. Thank you!
Its so simple even a kid can do it! 😂😂😂. Only reason why I told myself to go down a black diamond though I was still learning. Sure enough, it wasn't too bad as long as you stick to good technique. Of course I stumbled and grumbled down the black diamond the first few times but still at the end, great fun and enjoyment.
@@mankybrains I tried a black diamond run once in a sunny blue bird day. There is only ice left on that run and I cannot even stand on my heel side there 😱 I get a nightmare after that run. 😂
@@tontj yeah, that totally sucks. I did that last season a good amount of ice on the black diamond. Sadly though, I found out each mountain has it's only 'universal grading' of how the runs are labeled. Over in California, there are 3 resorts from Vail. Would love it if you could do some more videos on the challenging runs you come across during your season as I would have never done the sarenne if it werent for your video. Thank you for all the joy you have brought into my life through your advice videos!
That's awesome to hear, I've got a long lens camera to try and make filming steeper runs a bit easier, as having someone follow me down nasty slopes doesn't always work!
That's great, we need more snowboarders riding (EU) blacks and yellows! 👍 Be sure to do Sarenne first thing in the morning, too, such a difference to the afternoon moguls - you can smoothly carve almost the whole thing. Oh and I second showing the interesting technical (aka steep) runs. 😀
Very good drills! I recently was giving a new boarder a lesson and had him focus on a couple similar drills. He did very well and was able to figure out which stance he preferred. He didn't know if preferred goofy or regular. He started doing turns after he got used to the drills. He said he spent all day on the bunny slopes. I got him to go up with me on the green runs and he got to spend more time on the run than on the lift. The bunny slope lift, he would have spent way more time just riding the lift then practicing. I definitely wasn't as good at explaining as you but he did understand. I referred him to your channel for further lessons. You definitely have helped me help others.
You asked us to comment on if these kind of drill videos are useful. Yes, definitely, at least for someone like me. I think you got a good balance in terms of how much explanation you built in. More like this please!
I can’t wait to try these out next season, will also be great when boarding with my wife who skis slower, so these slow disciplined moves will really add fun.
Been riding my 26th season this year and felt like the base exercises were not challenging me anymore, but wanted a way to get better at the basics. All the little tweaks added to those exercises adds a lot to the level of balance and control needed. Love it, thanks a lot, definitely adding those to my practice rotation.
Thank you for this top-notch content Malcolm. I truly enjoy your channel for everything it delivers. Looking forward to giving these drills a go! Keep doing you!
Hey Malcom, thank you for all these videos! I've spent 5 days so far from zero snowboarding to carving, turning, and gaining confidence. Would you be willing to do a video on a proper olly and things to avoid or make sure we do? I want to get to dolphin turns but don't want to pick up bad habits!
Love the first couple of drills to try! I’m still trying to get a proper toe side and to just properly basic carve. I’m still very new & struggling with toe side as I caught my heel edge back in March & broke my wrist. Now I seem to have a brain block. Will definitely try some of these as soon as the weather improves and we get some snow here in Ontario Canada 🇨🇦
Great video. Thank you. I have used this to help when teaching. The examples are great. It would be helpful if each of these drills if you did them in slow motion as well. Overall great. Thank you.
Love the drills AND explanations! Just started to learn riding switch over the last 2 years. These types of videos help me narrow down my focus to improve technique when it feels like I’m almost starting over as a beginner to learn switch. Keep up the great content!! 🤘🏼🏂
Your teaching had helped me a lot. I'm 50 years old. I'm learning how to spray snow and ride away. Is there a proper way to do it? I want to make a short clip for my wife being sprayed with snow by me! I'm just passed beginner level and looking forward to improve my ride. Thanks a Ton!
Thank you man 🙏🏻 really appreciate your time making these videos, can't wait to get up to Scotland at the end of this month 👍🏻 love, peace and good energy ❤️🙏🏻
Great video, the most beneficial thing has been when you talk through the mechanics of a movement like with drill 3 and adding in the reverts, love that level of detail!
These drills are great! I'm an advanced free rider looking to polish up my carving and add some buttering. I use your drills to teach my sons as well, they're 5 & 7.
Thanks for this video Malcolm. I don't have a chance to get up as often as I'd like but have been riding for a long time. Watching your videos helps my mental when I'm dying to go make some turns but I can't RN... But when I do, having a quick go through the fundamentals you show off, makes getting back on that 'bike' so much easier.
Very nice, now you need to do the same thing as the advanced carving video you did a few weeks ago. 5 advanced carving drills. Challenge the expert riders out there !
Hi Malcolm, nice content as always. When I go snowboarding I feel very tired on my quads just after a couple hours, and I have good legs. Do you have any tips for reducing riding fatigue? I feel it's a bad riding technique rather than bad athletic form.
I'm really happy to find out that I've been doing #1~#3 challenges. Thank you for these great videos. I think it's helping me become better snowboarder!
Also, in terms of requests for future vids, you've done one recently on how to negotiate those annoying cat tracks, which was great. How about when the gradient is more challenging and you don't have a big wide piste to help you take the speed out? I'm thinking blacks with narrow sections, mogul fields, or in the trees. I struggle to really take charge of my turns in those kinds of situations.
Malcolm these videos are brilliant. I watch them over and over before I go away and try to use all the exercises on the piste. I started watching three seasons ago, before my first trip teaching my 10 year old to board and they have been invaluable. We are heading off to Cervinia in march (he’s 13 now) and we were really excited to see the Matterhorn in the background of one of your latest vids. Are there any exercises you think would be good for two boarders, watching each other and spotting each others problems for example. Or games to play that would help me help him move into switch riding. We are the two boarders in a large party of skiers and we like to get off on our own and find the steep stuff every now and then, that gives me good time to work on both our techniques. Keep up the good work. Alex
Honestly bro, you should start doing inspirational presentations for corporate retreats. I'm sure you could apply your experience and mastery in teaching snowboarding to sales or team building exercises etc.
Fantastic, I'm looking forward to trying these out and getting my season off to a good start! Have you ever done a video on improving ollies? It was a big focus for me last season to get more height, particularly off side hits, but I don't feel like I actually improved all that much. In the offseason, I've been working on my flexibility and strength, particularly in my legs, so I hope that helps when I get back on the board. Your videos helped me improve a lot in other areas last season, so I would be thrilled if you made an ollie deep dive eventually! Cheers!
Hey Malcolm! Currently in Alpe d'Huez, maybe I'll say hello if i catch you on the slopes! Thanks foe all your tutorials. Im on my third week snowboarding now and i'm feeling very confident thanks to all of those, slaying reds, blacks, and off piste tracks. Maybe too much so though, I'll practice those tomorrow in Baralpettes 🫡 dont get cocky guys! 😂
I’ve heard that a positive-positive binding angle is better for all-mountain riding and a positive-negative binding angle is better for freestyle riding. Could you make a video detailing the pros and cons of using different binding angles for different conditions?
Hey Malcolm loving your content! Thanks to you I identified that I'm stuck on skidded turns and in my attempt to progress further, I actually pick up some bad habits. Would love if you can make a step by step from upgrading from skidded turns to carved. Also in my country, ski pistes aren't as wide and empty, as the ones on your vids. Whenever I manage to get away for a few days of board, I'm forced to snowboard into huge traffic of people on not so wide terrain. I really feel I don't have the space to start trying carved turns, as some people in front of me are just learning and some "pros" for some reason fly on the edges with 100 km/h ... I always feel stressed and pressured and can't allow myself to gain some speed and try to feel out the board. Really not sure how to solve this, unless switching ski resorts.
Hey Malcolm, can you do a video on which types of snowboards, high back angles and binding angles are best for carving at the beginner and intermediate levels? On your recent Relatable Riding video, there were a lot of comments discussing how carving is not relatable to them and I think some may not even have the right type of board or setup for that type of riding.
Nope, you can learn to carve and carve a lot harder and better than most do on any proper (ie. no "catch free" "learn to ride" BS with zero edge hold) board and setup. You just have to bother to learn it, ideally with an instructor. The slow - "lazy" as Malcolm calls it - carving by slightly leaning to one or the other side we learned in the first week beginner course, the technique of up unweighted turns in the follow-up advanced courses third and fifth week - practice of actual riding made them better and better with the foundation of proper technique set. Most riders that you see on the mountain not properly carving just never got that foundation. Anything more - dedicated carving board or positive stance will help to then lay even deeper or have more fun turning tighter or wider radii. But that's all down the road.
Love the drills @Malcolm Moore. Haven’t been on a mountain for 5 years, heading out to Bulgaria next month, any recommendations for strength & mobility exercises to do in the meantime? Love your work!

Enjoy!!!!!! 🏂😊🫶
Good tips. I'll run though these next week when in France. Can't wait
Fingers crossed for some more snow by then!
@@malcolmmoore snowed yesterday so today was pretty good. Even got some sunshine
Nice, thanks for all your help. Well done, 😎
Happy to help!
Thanks and yes: please do make more of these drill videos!!
Will do! Thanks so much 😊😊
Thanks, Malcolm! The drill videos and overexplaining are super helpful and have made me a better, more intentional, boarder for sure!
Great to hear!
This is so cool, thank you. Needs to be more content like this
Great video. Thank you. I have used this to help when teaching. The examples are great. It would be helpful if each of these drills if you did them in slow motion as well. Overall great. Thank you.
Love how you explain things thoroughly! Thank you for doing you!
You are so welcome!
Easy to see your passion for snow, waching how good and dedicated you are helping us learn. Thanks
Thanks for watching 😊😊
Great stuff MM!
Love the drills AND explanations! Just started to learn riding switch over the last 2 years. These types of videos help me narrow down my focus to improve technique when it feels like I’m almost starting over as a beginner to learn switch. Keep up the great content!! 🤘🏼🏂
Awesome thanks!
Yes to more drills! Thank you!!
No probs 😊✌️
Thank you man 🙏🏻 really appreciate your time making these videos, can't wait to get up to Scotland at the end of this month 👍🏻 love, peace and good energy ❤️🙏🏻
Thanks so much appreciate the kind words!! Enjoy Scotland 😊🏂✌️
Great video, the most beneficial thing has been when you talk through the mechanics of a movement like with drill 3 and adding in the reverts, love that level of detail!
Glad you liked it!! 😊😊
Love these. Thanks MM
Thanks 🫶😊✌️
These drills are great! I'm an advanced free rider looking to polish up my carving and add some buttering. I use your drills to teach my sons as well, they're 5 & 7.
Ah that's awesome to hear!
Great exercises can't wait to try them out. Anything to improve riding 😊
Brilliant enjoy!!
Awesome to hear !! 😊😊
Very nice, now you need to do the same thing as the advanced carving video you did a few weeks ago. 5 advanced carving drills. Challenge the expert riders out there !
Yeah good shout 😃
@@malcolmmoore Always looking for new drills, it's not because you are an expert rider that you can't still improve and work on technique.
Love those drills! Would be great to have a visual recap at the end to screenshot. So that I can remember those drills for instance on the lifts 😊
Great idea!
Awesome! Thank you !
Thank you 😊😊😊
It's absolutely a pleasure to watch your riding
Thanks so much 🙌😃
Excellent Vid, they are great for me as a low intermediate Thanks.
Thanks for watching 😊✌️
great technique really helpful
Awesome happy it helps 😊😊
Thank you, I like these drill videos, I will try.✌
Enjoy!!
Hi Malcolm, nice content as always. When I go snowboarding I feel very tired on my quads just after a couple hours, and I have good legs. Do you have any tips for reducing riding fatigue? I feel it's a bad riding technique rather than bad athletic form.
These are great drills! Love your work!
Thanks so much 😊🫶🙌
perfect video! u did welll
very clear and precise description of the movemnts. well thought out excersises . thannks
Thanks so much 😊🙏
I'm really happy to find out that I've been doing #1~#3 challenges. Thank you for these great videos. I think it's helping me become better snowboarder!
Amazing awesome to hear 😊🫶✌️
effin' brilliant, mate! i needed this.
Awesome 🙌
Hi Malcom, great vids as usual, do you have some content on stance widths angles etc also what are your personal settings board size etc, thanks wilko
what are the more advanced drills, once dolphin is easy?
Toe to toe carving is a good one!
Yes please. Great exercise exercises for home work 🤓
Love the drill videos Malcolm!
I;'ve been waiting for these kinds of video, crazy, appreciate this a lot!
Glad you like them!
Yeah this is a good shout! On the list 😊
Slow speed carving riding switch is what I practice when riding with my kids!! ❤
More please!! Thanx!!! 👏👏👏👏
thanks a lot!!! awesome clip
Thanks for watching 😊✌️
Yeah, I'm sure I would make better money doing that too! Maybe one day 🤔
Really good drills! Can’t wait to practice! Definitely share more drills 🤙🏽
Thanks so much!! Yeah more drills videos coming 😊😊
great videos thanks!
Thanks for watching!!
Cheers!
I like this one.
Thank you!
very very beautiful movement
Thank you so much 😊🙏✌️
You are the master!! 😉😉😉
Thanks 🙏
Hey Malcolm!
Currently in Alpe d'Huez, maybe I'll say hello if i catch you on the slopes!
Thanks foe all your tutorials. Im on my third week snowboarding now and i'm feeling very confident thanks to all of those, slaying reds, blacks, and off piste tracks. Maybe too much so though, I'll practice those tomorrow in Baralpettes 🫡 dont get cocky guys! 😂
I'm on the mountain every day, so if you see me say hello!
I’ve heard that a positive-positive binding angle is better for all-mountain riding and a positive-negative binding angle is better for freestyle riding. Could you make a video detailing the pros and cons of using different binding angles for different conditions?
Awesome video as always. thanks Malcolm 💪
Many thanks 🙌
I try and film videos outside of the holiday times so early season if we've been lucky with snow, and also avoid the weekends...good luck 🏂😊✌️
But that's all down the road.
nice video; thanks!
No worries 😊😊
Love the drills @Malcolm Moore. Haven’t been on a mountain for 5 years, heading out to Bulgaria next month, any recommendations for strength & mobility exercises to do in the meantime? Love your work!
This videos made me realise I'm still doing a lot of things wrong what do stance do you have your bindings set to for riding switch?
I'm on +15 -12 on this board ✌️
