Hi everyone! We are working with a new editor this time! I know this is a short one, but for a first try, I think it's definitely edited so so well. I know some people don't even start watching a video if it's short, but I think that's a bit silly personally :). I know that in general you all like longer edits, so we'll try to make the next ones longer though! :) Enjoy!

I like around 30 minutes MINIMUM to get a sense of a movie, 40 being even better. Some movies have so many great scenes, it's a shame to cut them out simply to reduce the reaction duration . . ..
Yeah, I love your reactions normally, and I LOVE this movie, but I just can't watch it. So much good stuff was cut out. There's no continuity. If you really think this was edited well for a first try...
yeah, a good reaction duration is about 35 minutes, below 30 minutes it's just not really watchable
Even though it’s a short video it was very well done
Mary, if you’re fascinated by Egypt, please watch Stargate SG-1
Yes to this
At least the movie, the serie is looong with plenty of fillers (series were not as high quality as today back then) it's good, but I don't know if she'll have the time to watch everything ^^
That would be cool, but if she did the series would her Exclusive Patreon. I can't see it being financially responsible paying all the RUclipsrs I subscribe to see exclusive content.
Well there's the 1994 movie Stargate with Kurt Russell as Jack O'Neill
Then there's the TV series Stargate SG-1 that ran from 1997-2007 staring Richard Dean Anderson as Jack O'Neill
@@JoeXTheXJuggalo1 The movie has Jack O'Neil. One 'L', and he has no sense of humor at all.
I don't know how many times I've watched this movie. What gets me every time is just how well edited it is. The cut between Zorg looking in the case and saying "It's empty" and Leeloo laughing is just so satisfying
It's even more satisfying the 2nd time it happens 😅
1:52 "Aw, man -- I'm obsessed with all the stories about ancient Egypt and the gods and, aw...pharaohs..." In that case, you should be sure to watch the film Stargate (1994)!
Leeloo was confused when she woke up, because her last memory was of herself dying.
The greatest sci-fi, comedy and opera film of all time! Trivia; the opera singer was 2 women; the singer and the woman we see playing the singer
That actress under all the makeup was Luc Besson's wife at the time, who he almost immediately left to be with Milla Jovovitch.
@@tarmaque That's one hell of a bonus contract.
@@Demane69 His relationship with Milla didn't last either. I have to assume he's very charming, but can't keep his hands of the new merchandise.
Zorg is Gary Oldman who was also Commissioner Gordon in the Dark Knight trilogy. He's a friggin' shapeshifter.
And Sirius Black in Harry Potter! He is so good you almost don’t recognize him between roles
He plays Churchill in Darkest Hour and the fictional serial k***er Mason Verger in the Horror movie Hannibal
A really good actor 😊😊
My favorite of his is "Rosenkranz And Guildenstern Are Dead".
He was also the bad guy in The Professional (also from Luc Besson)
@@jamesfromacctare you fuckin' kidding me ? 🤯
That song sung by the Diva was designed to be unsingable by humans. So of course people took that as a challenge. There's actually a few people who got very close. You should look up the charismatic voice video about it she watches and critiques some of the best one as a vocal coach.
Jumping in to explicitly namedrop Dimash. He's covered it a few times, and each version is well worth a listen, as he plays around with the runs and the ending glissando a little differently each time. ❤
Fun story: in this movie the protagonist (Bruce Willis) and the antagonist (Gary Oldman) never actually meet.
The closest they get is Corbin walking into an elevator while Zorg is walking off. It’s just part of the beautiful nonsense that is this movie.
This is one of my all-time favorite movies. I’m so happy you reacted to this.
fun fact LUC BESSON started this film but ran into production/funding issues so he made LEON THE PROFESSIONAL while he was waiting to restart including of course GARY OLDMAN
This is Luc Besson (writer, director). It SO easy to love his stuff. You should do a movie reaction to La Femme Nikita. It was one of his earliest -- and surely the one which made him known internationally. I'm SURE you would love it.
IF you ignore how much he sexualizes minors...
High marks for continuity. For example, Zorg (head of Zorg Industries) tells his subordinate to lay off thousands of employees. After a while you see a notification drop into Corbin's mail tube that's marked Zorg Industries (which owns the taxi service Corbin works for). Then the Chinese vendor reads that he's fired, lol.
Zorg's "I Know." after the priest telling him he's a monster always cracked me up in how he answers it so nonchalantly lol
A personal favorite. Never gets old, and know it completely by heart.
The actor who gets the McDonald's tipped all over him is called Mac MacDonald.
The little creature on Zorg's desk is featured in Besson film "Valerian: City of a Thousand Planets"
16:22 This is the most powerful explosion ever detonated indoors on a movie set. Bruce Willis suffered hearing damage as a result.
Wow.
If you're an ancient Egypt fan, consider checking out the movie, Stargate.
Yea to this ! And sg1 was good
If you want to see a movies with a modern take on Ancient Egypt and their Pharoahs and Gods, you should absolutely watch Stargate (1994)
Absolutely she should !
And there are a few episodes of a TV series or 3 that grow out of the Stargate premise, too. :)
Frick! Mary as Pam saying they're the same picture almost made me spit out my coffee! Well done editor!
I must have missed that, where in the vid is that?
@@chefskiss6179 intro :)
@@chefskiss6179 It's in the first 15 seconds.
@@chefskiss6179 right at the start when she is saying how she confused this movie with The Sixth Sense.
@@MovieswithMary Ah right, the ONE TIME I look outside the window at the storm, lol. Thanks... everyone 😂
*The Fifth Element is one of those movies you need to watch about 5-10 times, and pay 100% attention to, or you'll miss something that will make something else, 15 minutes later, not make sense. But it's such a great Sci-Fi movie.*
Ah! This is on my top ten list ❤ so happy you are finally getting to this one!! Gud chickan! 😂
Did you recognize the hallway robber? He played Nino in Amelie.
I COMPLETELY missed that! I can't believe it really, since I watched Amelie not too long ago!
Never realized that!
Thank you for the comment! I was wondering if she caught it but didn't really feel like watching such a short reaction of a crazy movie.
Mary watching The fifth element?!?
My day just got better.
Bless your heart little mama😊
Bruce Willis has another hidden gem called ..The kid.
Amazing that the actor who played the priest is Ian Holm or Bilbo Baggins
Another great older movie (2006) is Ultraviolet; starring Milla Jovovich, the same actress who played Lilu in The 5th Element. It's a action drama with a very cool futuristic design and stylishly unique combat.
Awesome reaction of my favorite movie!!!!!!!😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
This and Demolition Man are two of the best comedic sci-fi's ever made.
Mary, I think you'll love this film. It's a lot of fun.
Yes, the greatest Egypt and the gods movie, Stargate. It's glorious.
Some trivia:
* The language Leeloo speaks, Divinian, was actually created for this movie. Milla and the director would speak in it to each other between takes.
* Bruce was unaware that Milla would be speaking the Divine Language in their first scene together, so his reactions to what she's saying in that scene are real.
* The president would later be the voice actor for Finnick (the fennec fox) in "Zootopia".
Love this silly movie. Glad you decided to check it out and that you enjoyed it!
if you're looking for an overlooked classic, try "Kelly's Heroes" with Clint Eastwood from 1970
YES! A war/heist/comedy movie with Clint Eastwood, Telly Savalas, Donald Sutherland, Don Rickles, and a host of other character actors and soon-to-be-stars.
One of my all time favorite films!
You asked for some science fiction movie suggestions. Here are some of my favorites that are not well known but are great!
Forbidden Planet (1956)
Fantastic Voyage (1966)
The Andromeda Strain (1971) - based on a Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park author) novel.
Outland (1981) - Stars Sean Connery
Lockout (2012)
Hi Mary, here is a small list of Syfy movies I watched growing up, you may like. Hope you enjoy.
1) The Last Starfighter
2) Enemy mine
3) StarGate
4) Explorers
5) Starman
6) Dreamscape
7) Darkcity
8) Soldier
9) Gattaca
10) City of lost Childern
She reacted to Dark City a long time ago but it's on Patreon only.
3:09 - in the original script, the room started to fill with sand quickly, so getting stuck in there was a death sentence, hence the priest's reaction. In this version they didn't do that so people ask "why not open the door and get the alien out".
6:00 fun fact: when Milla accidentally hits her head on the plexiglass tube, it was the first take, and she really didn’t know where the plexiglass was, and actually tried to sit up and smacked her head on the tube, and the director included it for authentic realism.
You should check out Stargate.
And (very importantly) NOT JUST Stargate the original movie, but ALSO Stargate SG-1 the TV series.
If you like Ancient Egyptian stuff and sci-fi mixed together, Stargate is the ultimate incarnation of that.
You'll LOVE it.
The original movie is effectively the pilot of what then became the entire Stargate franchise, starting with Stargate SG-1.
SG-1 picks up where the movie left off, and while the movie is pretty good, the series is a LOT better than the movie.
Stargate SG-1 was SO GOOD that it ran for 10 seasons, and had THREE spin-off shows.
- Stargate Atlantis (which spins-off out of the middle of SG-1) had 5 seasons.
- Stargate Universe (the sequel to SG-1 and Atlantis) had 2 seasons.
- And Stargate Origins (a prequel set in Egypt) had 1 season too.
So....
While Stargate the movie is pretty good, SG-1 is the reason the Stargate franchise became SUPER beloved and ran for 18 seasons and like 4 movies.
Some more sci-fi movies to watch. First 'Total Recall' with Arnold Schwarzenegger, this one has some nice plot twists and good action. Next the movie Stargate. It starts off in Egypt like the Fifth Element then moves on with a good story and action. Another Arnold movie to watch "True Lies' while not sci-fi but plenty of action and comedy.
@MovieswithMary the French Writer-Director Luc Besson hired fashion designer jean paul gaultier to do the costumes
There's a great movie from a completely different genre that I really think you'd love.
"Out of Sight" is criminally underappreciated. It's packed full of movie stars: George Clooney, Jennifer Lopez, Ving Rhames, Don Cheadle and is directed by Steven Soderbergh.
If you want vintage Sci-fi that is not gory and is upbeat, you can’t go wrong with the Original Star Trek series from the 1960s. It’s arguably the first modern Sci-fi TV series and it holds up very well.
I just loved your giddyness throughout this watch, so thanks for that, Mary!
And as for other suggestions, while it is nowhere as close to this level of quirkiness and laughs, I hope you try Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004) one day; talk about old-school sci-fi :)
"Enemy Mine".....funny sci fi w/ a story line
Often overlooked, one of my SF favourites.
If you haven't seen it, consider reacting to
The Abyss
A classic 90s sci fi by James Cameron. Still considered to this day as the hardest movie to make. If you are going to watch it, MAKE SURE it's Director's Cut not theatrical release (big difference in ending and overall plot). It's not as funny as Fifth Element, but a must-watch.
LOVE the Abyss.. such a great movie
This film has such a great cast, one of the reasons why it’s such a great film.
This is one of my all time favorite movies. It’s so over the top but so fun!
Also, it’s a testament to truly skilled filmmakers that a movie made in ‘97 holds up better in its special effects than the garbage CGI being pumped out in 2024.
I watched this at the cinemas randomly when it was premiering, still one of my favourite movies. Good movie to for demoing home movie gear !
I have a patch for my bag that says 'I am a meat popsicle' :) This is a classic.
Fun fact : in french he says " Je suis une mite en pullover" => " I'm a moth wearing a pullover" and it's still a classic 😁
What makes Movies with Mary so delightful? Comments like what Mary said as Leeloo kisses Corban then blasts the Death Planet, "What a kiss."😅
Great reaction. Always loved this film.
I remember they used this film to showcase tvs. Such a great use of colour. Couldn't walk through an electronics department and not see this playing.
2:08 "I'm obsessed with thing about Ancient Egypt, the gods, and Pharaohs" You should watch the movie Stargate.
One of my favorite films ever. Love is the best thing ever.
Mary, I highly recommend a movie called Galaxy Quest. I don't think you've seen that one and it fits the bill very well for light-hearted but also tense sci fi
17:25 Remember that her last flatmates were Mondoshewans. It didn’t matter that she was a living weapon, she got to reassure herself that she was the only non-evil violent being. That her violence was only used in defense of life and peace.
Being among humans, who were not peaceful in nature, but evolved as their world’s most ruthless killers, traumatized her. For all the beauty of humans, she had trouble at the end distinguishing them from the Mangalores who had killed her. She could fight her own inner demons on her own time, but realizing she was tasked with saving a hundred billion predator-descended creatures from even the worst killer in the universe was too much for her.
Thank you for watching this one. This is my #1 favorite movie.
The first time I saw this in the theatre I went in entirely clueless about it. My friend wanted to go see it so we did in a brand new theatre with all new sound systems, it was amazing. It was nice to be surprised with something good.
Have you seen Stargate? A more serious 90's sci fi with EXTREMELY HEAVY Egyptian influence. It's an AWESOME movie.
Mary coming out with the classics! Hope you continue with more of the great sci-fi movies!
This movie was in theaters when we were in like grade 7 or 8...me and my buddy chose to go watch this movie in the theatre while all the other students and chaparones watched the roadside or something with kurt russell. I think we won that day.
Gary Oldman plays Zorg. He’s Sirius Black in Harry Potter, won an Oscar for his portrayal of Winston Churchill.
I'm glad you did this movie. Thank you. 😊
Chris Tucker's character is a scream!
Completely love this one.
If you search, there is an actual girl that can sing that Opera song covering all the octaves, eight I think, yet it is supposed to be impossible.
- Streets of Fire (1984) is also a fun light movie.
- Wasabi (2001), another Luc Besson movie (the director from this movie) with Jean Reno (from Leon the Professional), fun movie (but watch with subtitles since its mostly in french or dubbed)
- Superbad (2007) is a really fun lighthearted movie.
- 40 year old virgin (2005)
I absolutely love the editing in this video! The pull ins, the Mary add ins all add another layer of entertainment to a movie I love. Thank you to the editor, more from them please!
The guy with the gun an image on hat.. Dancing afer failing his attack.... Remember M. Quincampoix in Amélie (her lover)....
This is a film by French director Luc Besson. He has done several fascinating films in his career, for example, the original NIKITA (French).
love this movie.. some people do not understand the campiness... always love your reactions and I am really liking the editing and fun fact that the enemy guy is so close to them at times but they never actually meet
😅 The Fourth Dimension, The Fifth Element and The Sixth Sense … Seventh Heaven, that’s hysterical.
I love this one, Mary! 🪪 My friends and I saw it at the cinema four times. 🌱☁🔥🌊❤
This is such a fun movie that never takes itself seriously, it's just fun. And like you said, all the characters are just great. It seems like marriage and motherhood really agree with you, you just seem brighter like a shining aura around you or within you.
As for SF & humor I would suggest Firefly.
There's also an old movie from 1984 called The Last Starfighter, where a trailer park teen with no prospects focuses on playing an arcade game called Starfighter. When he reaches the record high score the teen finds out the game is a recruitment device, and the movie goes on from there.
It's silly in many ways, but it's fun.
Love the show Mary! Keep having film fun!
Me in 1997: “We’ll definitely have interplanetary travel and laser guns and aliens in the future, but don’t you think the whole ‘male celebrities wearing women’s clothing’ concept is a little far-fetched?”
Me in 2024: 😅
This movie is definitely a classic. It goes under the radar sometimes but it’s really good & funny.
I misquoted Mary 😮 according to my wife. Mary actually said, "That's one hell of a kiss."😅
A few film suggestions,
"Titan AE" and "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within" are both animated films that I remember enjoying.
"Prospect" and "Predestination" are a couple of heavier Sci-fi films.
Finally "Cloud Atlas" is one of my favourite films of all time.
Thanks for the entertainment.
Incredible art design, and a creative story and characters.
This is the best sci-fi farce ever made (just ahead of Ice Pirates imo). So much fun, so many great performances.
Glad you finally got to this movie, Mary! The Fifth Element could be an alternate instalment of the Die Hard franchise, but with costumes by haute couture design maven Jean-Paul Gaulthier. A greatly entertaining, visually exciting movie, it's filled with clever and amusing details and call-backs that make it worth seeing again!
If you've seen the Harry Potter movies, you've seen a performance by Gary Oldman, Sirius-ly. He is also the lead in the (movie remake) of the British spy story adaptation (from the John Le Carré novel), Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (2011).
If you liked director Luc Besson's futuristic "The Fifth Element", you will probably love his even-MORE futuristic "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" released exactly 20 years after the first film.
To speak of Besson as visionary doesn't even begin to approach what he can present.
This is such a unique movie. Nothing else out there combines all these different kinds of, well, elements. It could have easily gone terribly wrong and ended up a total mess. It's a bit of a miracle it all came together so well.
At 8:22 on Corbin’s floor there is a magazine titled “ADOLF.” At 8:33 we see the hairstyle of Jean-Baptiste Emmanuel Zorg, which is a left-to-right flipped version of the hairstyle made famous (among hairstyle followers) by Funny Mustache Man, yet Zorg is not immediately coded in-universe as being evil. Luc Besson does this to show us that there will in fact come a time in the future where a certain failed Austrian painter will no longer be considered as the acme of evil, perhaps by being supplanted by some more contemporary Ultimate Evil, just as Hitler in his turn supplanted 1914’s boogeyman, The Kaiser.
Incidentally, Funny Mustache Man’s hairstyle is also portrayed on young John Connor in Terminator 2, perhaps because he is a famous military leader whom time travelers keep trying to assassinate.
Also, Zorg’s soul patch is the same size as Funny Mustache Man’s (pre-Mandela Effect) Funny Mustache.
Yes, boys and girls, in the old timeline, Funny Mustache Man had an even Funnier Mustache.
This movie is basically a live action anime. An actual anime adaptation would be top shelf.
The only movies I can think of that are like this movie are: Tank Girl, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Demolition Man, Mars Attacks, Galaxy Quest, Men in Black, The World's End, Idiocracy, Brazil, Evolution, and The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai across the 8th Dimension. I have seen this movie so many times, it might be at least my favorite Bruce Willis movie, and definitely one of my all-time favorite movies. It is a dumpster fire. But such a splendid dumpster fire. Or perhaps my favorite Bruce Willis movie is 12 Monkeys. I don't think I can decide, actually. Plus, there's also The Sixth Sense. But I don't watch that movie over and over and over, and over. Like I do this movie.
Another good movie around the time of The Fifth Element is Starship Troopers. One of my all-time favorite movies is The Last Starfighter 1984.
Its nice to get a movie about the future that isn't a dystopian hellscape all the time. I mean, we're obviously headed towards a dystopian hellscape but at least let us pretend like we're not.
i watched this movie blind on opening weekend in the theaters - it was a full house and everyone around me loved it laughing out loud edit - it's definitely a love or hate cult classic in the years since
The Fifth Element is in my top 5 favorite films and is my favorite sci-fi and Bruce Willis movie, and in my opinion the best live action anime that's not based on any anime.
I can't remember if I knew this was coming but AWESOME! Such a fun movie.
Oh, Die Hard was Bruce's first action movie. Before that he was best known for comedy, especially on TV. And light scifi, is that what you want? The 80s had a lot of those. I mean, there's always got to be something tense in them, that's standard 80s scifi comedy. The government is always the enemy in those. But here's some of the lighter ones. Some are more emotional than others so I'll start with the more funny ones and have the more serious (but still at least partially funny) ones further down:
Real Genius
Flight of the Navigator
Short Circuit
*batteries not included
Cocoon
D.A.R.Y.L.
War Games
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (from the 70s actually)
This movie is crazy and I love it ;D It's been in my top all-time favorites ever since I saw it ^.^
Eric Serra is the composer for the score & soundtrack. I've loved his entire catalog of musical works! Also, mostly w/ this director, Luc Besson!
I am so happy to see you watch this movie.
The president, "Deebo", and Chris Tucker were in this movie before they were also in movie "Friday".
I saw both of those Bruce Willis movies a few times but never payed attention to the fact that both titles are in consecutive/numerical order (Fifth and Six)!!!
Another fun sci-fi movie is “The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across The 8th Dimension.” Also “Flash Gordon.”
