Don’t worry about the tears, it still gets me every time too. And when the producers were trying to convince Aerosmith to record the theme 'I don't want to miss a thing' they showed the final goodbye scene between Liv and Bruce to lead singer Steve Tyler. As soon as he saw his real life daughter calling for her daddy he was also reduced to tears and agreed. 😭#Masterstroke
I think Mary might like "Close Encounters of the Third Kind". It's an old Spielberg.

The science in this science fiction is all over the place, but it's the characters and the relationship between them that makes this movie work.
I know this is not the point of the movie. But goddamn Liv Taylor is so stunningly beautiful in so many films, including this one.
Her acting as "Arwen" in Lord of the Rings may have been a short role, as far as screen-time is concerned, but boy did she knock it out of the park! And flawlessly rocked the costumes for that role. She made me believe she was an elf, even her conversing with Strider in Elvish, a totally made-up language. 👍

I think you would like the sci-fi flick Moon. Sam Rockwell does an almost solo performance with a great thriller, mystery type space story.

The actor Bruce Willis calls "Mr.Wizard" is Jason Isaacs, who would go on to play Lucius Malfoy in the harry potter series a few years later.

It's funny when you realize the guy he calls Mr. Wizard is Jason Isaacs, aka Lucius Malfoy in the HP movies.
I sister movie to this one would be DEEP IMPACT, which came out at about the same time, and was also about an asteroid hitting the earth. But Deep Impact was more about the "little people" than those "saving the planet". More of a drama than an action flick. Also great actors in there. AND, if you want global destruction on an epic scale, there's the movie "2012"... Over-the-top, but a fun watch. :)
*Deep Impact* was technically about a comet instead of an asteroid or meteor (not like it makes much of a difference).
This one is okay, liked Deep Impact a little better, they're both decent flicks in their own way. This reaction makes me grateful that NASA is working on this (potential) problem. Nothing beats preparation!
Deep Impact is better human drama rather than this schmaltzy ham-fisted explodey thing.
At this point you've seen pretty much all the "going into space" movies that I typically recommend. The most similar others that I don't see in your channel's Archives are: The Fifth Element (1997), Starship Troopers (1997), Total Recall (1990), and Men in Black (1997), Men in Black II (2002), and Men in Black 3 (2012).
One of the main actors actually asked Michel Bay "In what way does this movie make any sense?" and he replied something like "it doesn't, just go with it".
Thanks you while I enjoy this movie I do find it very silly. So an asteroid collides with a comet and within an hour The debris strikes Earth. Then a few hours later after the earth has moved to considerable distance in its orbit it gets struck again. And again. And again. Because hey the debris is all heading right for Earth even though it's moving. 😅😅😅😅😅.

Ben Affleck asked Michael Bay on the set if it wouldn't make more sense just to train experienced astronauts how to drill instead of the other way around and Bay responded just by telling him to "shut the f%ck up"... its part of the behind the scens of the movie that were included on some copys where affleck is talking about that
@@Asticek, it takes many years to learn how to drill. So no, it doesn’t make more sense to teach astronauts to drill. They don’t have to teach the drillers very much astronaut skills. They are not piloting the craft or space walking or working on any equipment in the ship. They are just up there drilling.
It's a far cry from The Green Mile, but Michael Clark Duncan was hilarious in this. And Liv Tyler proved she could be just as good in this action drama as well as she could play Aragorn's fiance. But alas, LOL, Ben Affleck's character wasn't much smarter in this than he was in Good Will Hunting.
Starman (1984) with Jeff Bridges and Karen Allen. Directed by John Carpenter. Bridges got an acting Oscar for it.
Great reaction! Off the top of my head, I recommend *Moon* (2009) and *Sunshine* (2007). *EDIT:* And you haven't reacted to 1983's *The Right Stuff.* A _must-see_ film.
Moon and Sunshine are two fantastic movies. I own both of them.
Believe it or not, NASA uses this movie for all it's new people to view. They are asked to list everything the movie gets wrong. To the best of my memory the list is up to 167+ errors and counting.
This is a fun movie but I literally cringe every time I watch it.
Lev is played by Peter Stormaire. He's a fantastic character actor that has been in a bunch of movies. Fargo, Constantine, The Big Lebowski... to name a few.
He was excellent in constantine.
Deep Impact... you'll very much want to see Deep Impact. It came out the same year as this one. In my opinion, Armageddon was the more "summer blockbustery" movie, but Deep Impact was a BETTER movie.

Different style, I get your "summer blockbustery" was in the message of hope that we would prevail, whereas Deep Impact was the message that "were fucked" and to try to make the species continue.
You should also watch Deep Impact. It was really good.
This proves that Michael Bay is excellent at over the top action specifically when he's not doing adaptions of an existing franchise. You'll enjoy his other original work like the Bad Boys trilogy, Ambulance, Pain and Gain, The Rock, and The Island

I recommend "Space Cowboys" with Clint Eastwood, Tommy Lee Jones, Donald Sutherland, and James Garner. Simply put, "4 OLD guys go to space." :)
I remember this coming out around the same time as Deep Impact. This one though, has, and always will be my favorite. Almost 2 decades later, and I still tear up at Harry's sacrifice scene.
Hardly anything space related is realistic in this movie. As a space geek I just turn off that part my brain and enjoy the action 😊 (almost, there is still some eye rolling😅)

Heh, I don't know if they still do it, but NASA used to show this movie to candidates for management roles to see how many realism failures they could find.

Durring the shuttle program, safety plans inncluded keeping a second shuttle on the other pad to launch a rescue mission. Musk was the first to lunch mutiples that close last year aside from millitary launches. If memory serves the musk launches were for deploying skynet sats. They are considering mutiple craft launches for the Mars missions.
One of the best space movies that flew under the radar for most people is OUTLANDER, It came out in 2008 and did'nt get a large audiance as far as I can tell but is a great story and a lot of fun to watch.
33:13 Fun Fact: this scene between Harry and Grace was the reason why Steve Tyler agreed to supply the soundtrack; the producers were giving him a preview of the movie, and when Liv was giving the emotional speech to her movie dad, her real dad (Steve) broke down and agreed on the spot.

After this movie came out ketamine (horse tranquilizer) started seeing a serious uptick in usage, while it really hadn’t beforehand. So thanks, Michael Bay, for making users aware of a new option they had been overlooking.
There are some great Sci-Fi series you can watch. Everyone knows about Star Trek, but you have others like Babylon 5, Farscape, Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis (SG-1 spinoff), Firefly and its movie Serenity, Battlestar Galactica, and more recent one like The Expanse.
18:52 He's the one who was in Las Vegas, and his ask was for a doing the mission was a week long VIP package at Caesar's Palace, a casino hotel, so my guess has always been that he's addicted to gambling and it ruined their relationship. She doesn't yell, threaten to call the cops, or seem afraid of him, so I don't figure that he was abusive or unfaithful, but she seemed wary, distrustful, and protective of their son. I reckon that he let her down one too many times.
The Right Stuff is a great space movie.
Deep Impact would make an excellent companion to this. This is an action movie with a disaster premise, Deep Impact is a disaster premise with a drama. Both spectacular, but in different ways and exploring different aspects of what an asteroid strike would mean.
For Billy Bob Thorton the movie is Sling Blade.
I always find it funny when Bruce calls Jason Isaaic (lucius malfoy in Harry Potter) “Mr Wizard” years before he was actually a wizard in the HP series haha

Speaking of the Twin Towers, "9/11" (2002 film) French documentary film markets were doing a story on a fire dept in New York and were there, which ends up becoming their revised documentary about 9/11

The definition of a classic is _"something that is of high quality and is highly regarded and well loved over time on a WIDE scale."_ Classic is a _consensus,_ not an individual opinion. Armageddon was panned when it came out and it STILL is panned and it was nominated for Worst Picture at the Razzies. It was never _widely_ regarded as a good movie such as _The Godfather, Jaws_ or _Raiders of the Lost Ark_ for example. Those are widely loved over time and are hence classics, _Armageddon_ is not. Classic is a definition, not an opinion. Whether you personally like a movie or not is an opinion, whether it's a classic or not isn't.

Deep Impact was the better of the 2 Earth impact movies. Armageddon was like a live action cartoon.
There haven't been many movies that I returned to the cinema to see but Armageddon was definitely one that I did.
In terms of space themed entertainment, the 're-imagined' BattleStar Galactica TV show is worth watching, it is very thought provoking with questions that go beyond space, such as religion, politics, humanity.
Another great (recent) space show is The Expanse. That show has strong parallels to how our world is currently, yet it is set in the divisions of those who call Mars home, Earth and then the low paid space workers that live in between, harvesting materials to create water, air etc. but are often seen as lesser than.
The Expanse also has some great documentaries on how they wanted to ground as much as possible of the future technology to what would realistically be created from where we currently are.
I have watched both these shows through multiple times and never tire of the characters and story, hopefully you will find the same enjoyment.

First time I saw any of this movie, I came home from school and my dad was watching it. There was very little left of it, but I was sucked right in and cried my eyes out! Harry, Grace, and AJ's exchanges are still moving to me today, but I don't know if I fully appreciated Chick's story until recently when I finally watched it again. These days it is that part of the story that tears me up in a whole new way!
Mary, I also believe Liv Tyler has perfect skin, and my wife just added that Ms. Tyler's make up artists probably contribute to the perfection.

I have not watched Armageddon all the way thru in a long time and I always forget that Jason Isaacs is in this. So when you included the Mr. Wizard line I lost it laughing. To say that specific line to Jason Isaacs aka Lucius Malfoy is hilarious, especially because it is 4 years before Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets movie.
Billy Bob Thornton was in Fargo the TV series, Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormar were the bad guys in the movie Fargo. All 3 are in the movie Armageddon.
They paid for explosions, but saved money in one important area. NASA approved and supplied use of almost all their facilities and archived film of previous launches. So the huge vacuum building was the real one used in real training. The same with the swimming pool, the launch towers, walkways, etc. The rocket engine AJ and Grace are in is the one in the Smithsonian Space Museum.
Execs: So Michael how much budget do you need for the explosions?

This general plot was in two movies that year... this one was more fun. If you'd like to see the more emotional one, which happens to be among my top-tier, please check-out DEEP IMPACT (1998). ☄ At the very least, they're excellent to compare; their differences are very compelling. And to be clear, I love ARMAGEDDON (1998), too... I just prefer the other one.
This is fair brain dead entertainment, but Deep Impact is more realistic and has more emotional depth.

It gets you so much because Hollywood has spent years researching and audience testing movies to get the right triggers to get people to react a certain way - basically a Pavlovian response.
You might like Deep Impact, released around the same time with Morgan Freeman.

The bobs and weaves the shuttles did is impossible in space since they are not fighter planes in atmosphere. In space, you would have to use side-facing maneuvering jets which would consume a lot of fuel.
As for the drilling, I was attending an engineering college when this came out and some of the mining and geological engineering students I knew mocked the drilling because there was no mud from lubricant (keeping the drill from overheating).
Remember Liv's real dad did the theme.

"Pandorum" is a cool movie about the space. You will definitely like it.
If you want to watch one of the first space movies that is a great movie in it's own right watch the original " The Day the Earth Stood Still" released around 1953 just a couple of years after a massive sighting of flying saucers over the Washington D.C. area in 1951 where up to 15 flying saucers were scene over flying over downtown DC for 2 or 3 days in early July of 1951.
Brilliant choice.

Hi Mary ! If you want another take of a movie about a hitting Earth asteroid, I can only suggest you to react to Deep Impact. It was made at the same time as Armageddon (the two movies were released with a month or two from each other), with much less budget, and is surely less spectacular, but I still prefer it. It has a more people-level approach.
The tears and emotion are natural! It's practically the only time Michael Bay has tried to introduce an emotional core in one of his movies and he actually did it well. He won't do that again, though. : )
There are so many great space movies. If you don't mind leaning toward the scary, take a look at Sunshine, Red Planet, and the very new ISS.
Ben Affleck also worked with Michael Clarke Duncan in "Daredevil."
the Astronaut's Wife with Johnny Depp is tense
I never thought this film was great, in my opinion Deep Impact is so much better.
The whole movie budget was $140 million USD vs $553.7 million that it grossed worldwide. So plenty of money for explosions. Plus it's a Michael Bay film, so... *BOOM* . He loves things that go *BOOM* .
The American government has a policy regarding its agencies used in film. Agencies (like NASA and the US Armed Forces branches) may cooperate with filmmakers to use their ships, bases, tanks, etc. on two conditions: B. The film project, in intent and final product, must portray the Agency involved in a complete or almost complete positive light. Failure to do so prevents cooperation in the first place B. The film crew must respect the rules of the facilities like restricted areas, or else the crew gets tossed out.
All of them walking strange after landing. They obvs crapped their pants.
Event Horizon and Pandorum are two underrated space movies.
The physics in this movie is about as accurate as that in a Roadrunner cartoon
Sunshine is another space movie you HAVE to see.
That is an INTENSE movie!
