This movie is why comic book movies have been a Hollywood staple for the past 30 years.
Beetlejuice was Batman
For me, Batman tv show started it, the batman movie was great and really the Xmen is what finally drew me in for good.
And, the film industry has only degenerated since.
Well this one and Superman.

micheal keaton is the actor who played beetlejuice. he was also the vulture in the first tom holland spiderman as well as tons of other roles.
super bizarre, 1) beetlejuice at the time was a hotter script than batman, which was seen as more of a risk and 2) out of the actors in Beetlejuice, Keaton and not Alec Baldwin plays this part

Joker in this movie and in the comics is chemically bleached, his hair turned green and his lips red in a permanent rictus/smile, when he said he took off his "makeup" he was actually wearing skin toned makeup!

Easily the most comic accurate Joker ever put on the big screen. The suit, the jokes, the gangster attitude, the theatrics, Jack Nicholson is just incredible in this role. He and Michael Keaton play off each other so well.

so true, but i also liked the one from the series "gotham" very much, because they also managed to nail the special kind of "maniacal madness" the joker has, even though the joker story itself was an interesting adaption. (and before you ask: yes, the joker from 2019 was by far the worst)

Jack Nicholson is the most comic book accurate Joker. The other guys did their own thing with it.

The next one "Batman Returns" also with Tim Burton and Michael Keaton is a must. The rest are a mixed bag, different directors and different actors playing Batman. There is also Batman '66, an offshoot of the TV series that ran in the '60's. A completely different tone, very tongue in cheek, but very fun.
It was basically the comic strip come to life, which is why it had the text on screen during fights etc, but well worth watching a few eps to get a taste.

Batman the animated series from the 90’s was directly inspired by this movie and its sequel. I grew up with it and recently watched it as an adult, it holds up. An Emmy award winning series that takes the Batman story seriously and gives the characters the gravitas they deserve. You feel for the villains like Mr. Freeze and see them largely as tragic figures. Plus, Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) played the Joker, and for me and millions more is the definitive version of the Clown Prince of Crime. Cannot recommend enough.
Yes, Batman is a lot more empathetic in that series.

This Batman movie was HUGE, it was a massive hit in 1989. There was actually a lot of concern that the movie would be a silly take on the character in the vein of the old 1966 Batman TV show, and there was a huge fan backlash when Michael Keaton was cast to play Batman because he was really only known for doing comedic roles. Seriously, Keaton's casting broke the internet before the internet existed. But all worries were put to rest after the movie came out. Even now, it still remains to be a lot of people's favorite Batman.
The marketing and merchandising for it was everywhere. T-shirts, mugs, hats...if they could print the Batman logo on it, they did. They put up a big billboard of it in Times Square, and I'm pretty sure it remained there for years.
There are three other movies in this particular "timeline" - Batman Returns, Batman Forever, and Batman and Robin. Though Batman Returns is well-liked, there is a sharp decline after it, though it would still be fun to watch you react to them all, and you'll have a greater understanding of why they eventually rebooted the Batman franchise with Christopher Nolan.

Yeah, casting Micheal Keaton for this role was very similar to when they cast Bruce Willis in Die Hard.
Both primarily comedic actors (or romantic comedy "heartthrobs"). Both a HUGE risk. And Both absolutely "knocked it out of the park" with their performances!

There was a huge marketing push for this movie when it came out. The Batman logo was everywhere it seemed. Everyone was so excited to see it and it didn't disappoint.

Saw it in the theater opening week. The packed theater room was buzzing with excitement.
At the first sight of the badass Batmobile, the entire audience gave a collective "OOOOOoooohhhh!!"

Next you should watch Superman (1978) and Superman 2 the Richard Donner Cut (2006), those two movies combined gave you a full expereince with the man of steel. I highly recommend them.
I think this batman movie is criminally underrated. Batman and Robin is also totally underrated for it's pure fun-factor (by far the most fun batman movie). Also the old school adam west batman stuff is insanely underrated as well for pure cartoonishness silly OG comicbook vibes.
Yes, you can't take Batman seriously, and the villains were pretty outrageous, which is what the 66 version tapped into.
It worked so well because Batman was the straight man.

Some actress you should recognize. Billy Dee Williams played Harvey Dent and Kim Basinger played Vicky Vail. By the way, miss Vail was made for the comics in the 1950s, she was for DCs answer to Lois Lane. She was a semi love interest of Batman/Bruce Wayne.

The “Batman doesn’t kill” rule has waffled back and forth a lot over the history of the character. In the very first Batman comic book, he kinda kills the bad guy. Over his long history he has racked up an impressive body count.
Yes, Batman did carry guns at first. But a decision was made shortly there after by DC that good guys didn't carry guns. So, he had them taken away.

Micheal Keaton has done a ton of fun movies. He was originally a stand-up comic. Check out his first movie, "Night Shift" for some laughs. Also "Mr. Mom", "Johnny Dangerously", "BeetleJuice", "The Dream Team", "Gung Ho". He's done dramatic roles like "The Founder" and "Birdman" He was also the voice of Ken in Toy Story 3.
Batman fans made a huge stink when it was announced that Batman would be played by funny-man Micheal Keaton. People complained that Batman would be played by Mr. Mom. Once the movie was out it was a huge hit and people loved it.
Once upon a time, there were no shared universes. Comic book companies just put out comic books, and from time to time, a movie studio executive would look at a particular character and think "There's our next cash cow." So they would go to the company who owned that character, license them, and make a movie starring just that character.
If the movie did well, they'd make a sequel, often with the same director, and in the same style. Then if the sequel did well, some studio executive would think "For the third movie, here's how we're going to improve it!" Which is usually the point at which the series goes downhill and starts losing the fans. By the time it got to a fourth movie, it was usually garbage and became such a flop that it kills off any studio interest in that character for several years.
So it is with Batman. The first one was a hit, the second did well, so for the third movie, they decided to make it sillier and more kid-friendly in order to sell toys. The fourth movie is an abomination that never should have been made. Watch the sequel, Batman Returns, and stop there.
As for Batman the character, there was a movie serial in 1943, a campy TV series in 1966, as well as many animated movies and shows.
Unlike Marvel and their firaly well organized MCU, the DC universe is kind of a mess. So, unless a movie was made AFTER Man of Steel, I wouldn't worry too much about what order to watch them in, or which ones you need to see.
I would highly recommend Superman (1978), and its sequel Superman II (1980). There are two other films in the series, but you can skip them.
This came out when I was 3 I think and I wore out the VHS, and the other 90s Batman movies were an amazing time for toys from McDonald's and all the collectibles

The days I met The Joker and Batman in Los Angeles.
At the 1984 Summer Olympics, I was at the Track and Field events at the Coliseum. I walk up the steps to the tunnel to go to the Concession Stand. At the top of the stairs, standing near the tunnel I was headed toward, I see a man in a Safari-type outfit and unusually large and dark sunglasses. Being a fan of the movie "China Town" (1972) I immediately recognize him as Jack Nicholson.
A few years later:
I met Michael Keaton at a Dodger game, around the time Beetlejuice came out in 1988. I was at the Snack Bar looking at what to get, when in my periphery, I noticed people rubber-necking in my direction. Looking around, I noticed they were looking at the guy in front of me. I worked my body to his rear side, and tried to get a better look: "Hey! That's Michael Keaton!" I said inwardly. I thought of something to say that would not be too creepy fan-like. So I said, "Excuse me. I just wanted to say, I really enjoy your work," since I had already seen him in Mr. Mom. He was very friendly and said, "Ah hey thanks! Can I buy you a drink?" I do not drink alcohol, so I reflexively said, "No." I could not believe what I just said, but I was so embarrassed for likely insulting him, I didn't think explaining myself would help. Every time I think of that moment, I figuratively slap my forehead. It gets worse. I made the mistake of telling my girlfriend and the couple we were with what happened. At the end of the game, my girlfriend and her best friend, stand to their feet and scream, "MICHAEL!" as he was leaving with his girlfriend, sitting a section over. He hears them scream his name and they both run full speed up the stadium stairs and out the ball park, with my girlfriend and her BFF chasing from behind. I've always wanted another chance meeting to apologize. I'll do 220/221whatever it takes.
Back in the 1980s comic books were still written for children and had whimsical characteristics. In the 1990s and after comics started to mature. By the 2000 comics were dark and heavy. Tim burton's Batman refects the comics of the 80s. Nolan showed an up to date version of the comic.

The video game consoles and cable TV of the 80s lured away much of the traditional kid audience, and so comics had to mature to try to retain the audience they had
The '90s had four Batman movies (including this one in '89). In order of release:
Batman
Batman Returns (definitely worth a watch)
Batman Forever (a bit forgettable, but decent villains)
Batman and Robin (a so-bad-it's-good experience)
Maybe you know another actor. Harvey Dent, who in the The Dark Knight is played by Aaron Eckhart and becomes Two-Face, here is played by none other than Billy Dee Williams known for playing Lando Calrissian in Star Wars. Jack Palance (Carl Grissom) is also a very classic Hollywood oscar-winning actor.
11:15 That's Michael Keaton, who you've actually already seen twice before. He was the Vulture (flying big bad guy) in the MCU's Spider-Man: Homecoming and he was the title character in Beetlejuice.
When this came out this was a masterpiece..today it still is. The quality of actors in this is insane and a certain actor later pulled a world class joker too (no spoilers) but Nicholson is unmatched
There is a 1966 Batman movie. Based on the TV show with Adam West.
Nicholson had a hunch this movie was going to be a huge hit, before even shooting it. So he "generously" agreed to waive his usual high salary, and sign for just a percentage of the gross receipts, to help out the makers of a "risky" Tim Burton movie. The movie exploded in popularity, and Nicholson's share worked out to be $60 million (in 1989 dollars).

This movie and the next ones (Batman returns) are my favorite Batman movies... Other Batman movies from the 90s are not really good (but they're always funny, sometimes because they are so bad it becomes ridiculous ... and fun)
This is still my favorite Batman movie and my favorite Joker. Nicholson nailed the random menace that the comic version of the character has.
You might have recognized Michael Keaton from "Spider-Man: Homecoming," where he played Vulture. In fact, Vulture in the comics is one of Spider-Man's lamest villains (just an old man in a green wing suit, it's embarrassing) but Keaton turned the character into a three-dimensional, sympathetic, and menacing villain. He's a much, much underrated actor.
I hope you watch ALL of them. It's fun, even if some think some of them kinda suck. You get to see the different lead actors as Batman, new costumes, new Batmobiles, and new villains! I'll watch them all with you.

You should watch the sequel, Batman Returns. 100% must-watch, even more Tim Burton-y than the first. The subsequent movies, after Tim Burton and Michael Keaton exit, are debatable.
Also a word in defense of the much maligned TV series starring Adam West. The producers figured they didn't have the budget to do a serious Batman, so they did a light-hearted one. The characterizations are still fantastic and iconic despite the silly stories. Cesar Romero, despite his mustache, still ranks as one of the top all-time Jokers in a crowded field of great actors who've taken on the part (not you, Jared Leto). Burgess Meredith as Penguin, Eartha Kitt as Catwoman, Frank Gorshin as the Riddler, and all keyed in to the pop culture of the time. The rushed Batman movie they made to capitalize on the TV series was terrible, but the TV series itself is fun as long as you remember that Batman exists in many forms in different parallel dimensions.
In the comic book, Adam West's Batman once gave his utility belt to a more serious Batman and it saved his life. He's the most prepared Batman of them all, and will also give you a lecture on jaywalking.

Batman Returns is a must. After that several Batman films came aping that were not very good until the Nolan films.
Fun facts: This was the original dark and gritty version of Batman.
-Jack Nicholson took a percentage of the box office, as opposed to a flat pay for playing the Joker; making him *over 75 million dollars!*
-Basinger and Nicholson didn't like each other, so her revulsion at kissing the Joker (at the end) is real.
-Because it took over an hour to get into the Bat suit, Keaton had a few accidents in the suit.
If you want to have a real treat; watch this movie again in Black & white.

There are several films to concern yourself with when setting out to watch live-action DC movies. You've already seen the Nolan films, the newer Batman, and Joaquin Phoenix's Joker (2019). There's also a Phoenix Joker sequel coming out this year called Folie à Deux. Then there's the series that begins with the film you're watching today. I recommend watching the first two (which were directed by Tim Burton), but there are a third and fourth that follow, too. I've listed them all here:
1980s-90s Batman films
- Batman (1989)
- Batman Returns (1992)
- Batman Forever (1995)
- Batman & Robin (1997)
Then there are the Christopher Reeve Superman films. A bit dated, but they were really the first modern superhero movies. I again recommend the first two, but there are a third and fourth as well if you want to be a completionist:

Michael Keaton is the reason why Bruce Wayne & Batman use two different voices. He decided to use a different voice for Batman cause he figured people should be able to see that Bruce Wayne is Batman. He also made Batman a little darker due to the suit being tight and making him go inward and withdrawn. The production wanted Jack Nicholson for the Joker but he was not sure about doing it so they asked Robin Williams. When Nicholson finally decided to do it they withdrew the offer to Williams. When Williams found out he was being used he refused to do any work with Warner Bros until they apologized. 3:34 he was supposed to say “I am the night” but decided to say “I’m Batman”. 11:11 well Alfred is more like a father than a butler. 12:19 I saw a video with him getting into the Joker makeup.
Some quick Trivia: Michael Keaton started doing stand-up in L.A., and quickly moved to comedy films like Ron Howard's Night Shift, and Ron Howard's Gung Ho, but proved his acting chops with a film about addiction called Clean and Sober, which helped him get cast as Batman (at first fans were worried he was going to play it for laughs, but he balanced the absurdity with the drama pretty well). He was very good as a bad guy in both Pacific Heights and Desperate Measures, and after Batman Returns, went back and forth between comedies like The Paper and Multiplicity and more dramatic fare like One Good Cop and Jackie Brown. He kind of went through a slump for about a decade until gaining critical acclaim once more for a dramedy called Birdman, about an actor known for playing a superhero, and has since channeled that success into a resurgence of both dramatic roles (The Founder, Knox Goes Away) and superhero fare, like playing the villain in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and playing Batman onle more time in The Flash. The funny thing about your reaction was that you didn't recognize him as BEETLEJUICE! The sequel (called Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice) is also directed by Tim Burton - with much of the same cast returning - and is coming out later this year. Fingers crossed that it's as good as the first. I strongly recommend that you DON'T see the movie "Batman and Robin". It's bad.
You should give the animated series a try, if you haven't seen it already. Some must-watch episodes: Heart Of Ice, If You're So Smart, Why Aren't You Rich?, Two-Face (parts 1 and 2), the Demon's Quest (parts 1 and 2), and Almost Got 'Im.

I had it in my mind that Jack Nicholson had played several characters named "Jack", but could only find Jack Torrance in The Shining. Although he has played a few "James", "Jake", "Jay" etc. Maybe it's because he's so noticeable that I always think of him as "Jack".
Good reaction! I have a fondness for the Tim Burton Batman movies because I like the camp comic book feel. My grandkiddo and I both loved Val Kilmer as Batman, though a lot of people didn't.

The flesh makeup on Joker was a good gag, the Joker face is the high end expensive work, the flesh is the cheap facepaint, and the handkerchief is dipped in a solution that would only remove the cheaper makeup, also love the story of the purple on his neck when he first appears as Joker
I mean.. even the worst Batman movies have reasons to watch them! I've never seen Schwarzenegger seem to hate his own lines with such a vengeance in any other movie! Worth the experience.
For Batman, the order depends on the actor playing the lead . Each lead actor might have several different Batman movies i.e. part 1, part, 2, part 3….Once the lead actor who plays Batman changes the storyline returns to part 1 . So there is the Michael Keaton Batman which is not connected to the Val Kilmer Batman, which is not connected to the George Clooney Batman or Christian Bale , or Robert Pattinson .
Other than Superman in the 70s and 80s there wasnt really big budget Super Hero movies when this was made. This was the anscestor to super hero movies.
