    Back when I was a kid there were only three television channels and no cable. The only video game systems were Pong and the Atari 2600. There were only two movie theaters in town, both had only one screen, and there were no VCRs or DVD players. So, when a movie like Star Wars, Jaws, E.T. or the Empire Strikes Back came to town, everbody including your grandmother got dressed up and went out to see it. And if it was a good movie like Star Wars or Empire, everybody would be talking about it for months, and every kid in every yard would be outside playing lightsaber duels with sticks or pretending a gun shaped stick was a blaster. Back then, films like Star Wars brought entire communities together into a huge shared experience. It was a different time.

    In 1977, when Star Wars was first released, it wasn't called "A New Hope" or "Episode IV". It was just Star Wars. It was a gamble, and Lucas went out on a big limb to get it done. He had a story in his head, but as he flushed it out into a screenplay, he really saw a trilogy, and couldn't put all off it into one movie, so he hoped it would be successful enough for him to be able to do the rest of the stories, but he really had no idea whether the original movie would fly or not.
    After release, it of course just blew completely apart. It changed the world - or at least the world of movies. He would have more gambles to come with the next movies, but it was renamed to "A New Hope" and "Episode IV" after "The Empire Strikes Back" was released. This gave everyone the impression that we were in the middle of a story, and that there was more to come. We ate it all up.

    • @Calamity_Jack
      @Calamity_Jack 10 месяцев назад +12

      Yes, and when Lucas was a child, movie serials like "Commander Cody" and "Trader Tom" were a very popular in theaters. They were released in chapters and kids would go to the movies regularly to watch the latest chapters of their favorite serials. Later renaming of the first SW "Episode IV: A New Hope" was a nod to those old movie serials. It was only nearly two decades later that popular demand (and of course, the sense of huge money to be made) prompted the making of the prequel trilogy I-III. (And later, imho, the obscenities Disney birthed that were episodes VII-IX.) That's why the release order is mixed up.

      He wrote a massive script and it was after his pals Coppola, Spielberg and another pal read the script, told him to cut the beginning and end off and just do the middle part, which he did, and this was how the original trilogy ANH, ESB and ROTJ got made first.

    One of the best film scores of all time. It's #1 in my book. Williams scored the entire film, and they actually omitted much of his Hoth music that was featured on the original double-LP.
    The final 20 minutes is a gorgeous suite of music.
    One of my favorite moviegoing memories was watching the Special Edition release of Empire. Theaters packed to see the trilogy on the big screen for the first time in years. Audiences had fun with Star Wars, talking, carrying on. It was fine. A whole new, younger audience was responding to it, too. The audience entered Empire with the same light energy, laughing at Leia kissing Luke, etc. Then the carbon freezing scene hit. I looked around. From that point forward, the audience sat quiet and agape, leaning forward, blown away. I loved seeing their attitudes change.

      @@alexp601Yeah, Lucas was never sure if the 1st would do well enough to get a sequel so he just called it Star Wars but then, before Empire came out, he went back and numbered A New Hope as 4 and called 5 ESB from the get go like you said. He always planned on doing a 4,5,6 then going back for 1,2,3 and hopefully eventually 7,8,9 but it all obviously depended on how the 1st did. Also, there is a book called i believe "Splinter of a Minds eye." It was kind of like a book based on a script of a much more toned down, kinda lowbudget version of episode 5 he would have done incase A New Hope did well enough to get a small budget sequel.
      People always give Lucas TOO MUCH credit when it comes to just how well and how much he had planned out for an over all story. Han was frozen because they weren't sure if Ford would come back for Return of the Jedi, and Yodas whole "No, there is another" wasn't referring specifically to Leia but instead Luke's twin sister who wasn't originally Leia. Mark Hamill had gotten into a bad car accident between episode 4 and 5, that's why he gets clawed by the Wampa, they turned his real-life scar Into the Wampa scar to explain it. So, he was a bit of a daredevil and to cover the studios butt's incase something worse happened to him, they had planted the seed for "another" potential savior but when everything worked out they just made Leia be the other.

    fun facts: in A New Hope, some the desert shots were film in the deserts of Tunisia in North Africa where the temperatures during the day were in the 100s, other desert shots were filmed in Death Valley, Anthony Daniels (c3po) and Kenny Baker (r2d2) were boiling in their respective costumes. For this film, Hoth was filmed in the Arctic Circle in Norway where temps were in the -20F range, when you see the actors looking like they were freezing, chances are they were VERY VERY cold.
    in addition, Yoda's house and the scene with him were built on platforms 6ft off the ground so that Frank Oz (Yoda) could puppet Yoda.
    also, the scene with Vader talking to the Emperor was a change/addition to the movie, the re-release of this movie came out after Episode 1 came out in theaters so they replaced the original actor that played the Emperor in that scene and changed the dialogue to include more overt foreshadowing of both the reveal at the end of the movie and hinting at stuff revealed in the prequel trilogy.
    As Far as CGI additions to this movie, there weren't that many (not including what i mentioned above), most of what was done was just cleaning up the film. the largest section of additions was all the exterior shots of the Besbin (Cloud City) City.

    Prior to filming ESB Mark Hamill was in a car accident that left scars on his face. The attack by the creature early in the film allowed Lucas to integrate the car accident into the look for Luke. Rather than losing his part as Luke the new look became one of making the character seem less innocent, more rugged, and serious.
    Also, anybody old enough to have seen the 1964 Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer stop motion movie will recognize that whoever created the snow creature in ESB was haunted by images from their childhood of the abominable snowman. The resemblance just can't be an accident.

      Often quoted as the biggest reveal. In Pitch Perfect, Anna Kendrick’s character claims she predicted it based on the often mistaken idea that Vader means father in German, but it doesn’t. That’s Vater, pronounced Fa-ter. The name Vader was based on water. It does mean father in Dutch, but it’s pronounced differently. But there’s been a few answers as to where the name came from. Thing was, in early Star Wars drafts, Vader was not supposed to be Luke’s father, and his name was created before the connection.

    My Lady, I can not express with mere words how utterly delightful watching, nay experiencing ESB (geek shorthand for Empire Strikes Back, FYI Episode 4 is ANH and Episode 5 is ROTJ) again so many years later with you. Your enthusiasm is seemingly boundless and refreshing in a way that warms my cold, black cynical heart. Forgive a middle-aged fuddy-duddy his flights of fancy, but your smile could light all of NYC through the darkest of blackouts. And the word enthusiasm scarcely seems sufficient to convey your excitement. It takes me back to a time, so pregnant with heady escapism and a sense of wonder that I thought only a 12 year old little boy could manifest. Movies today rarely possess such capacity to exite and hearten the way the OG Star Wars trilogy did and, with your help, clearly still can. So, thank you so very much for sharing so very much with the 12 year old little boy that still haunts my desiccated soul. The beauty of your soul and personality is matched only by your physical beauty. I am in your debt beyond measure. God bless you and never let go of your youthful enthusiasm and joy.

    A decade or so later, I was in the Marine Corps and was overseas when the film Star Wars came out. It was a phenomenon - people coming from the States kept talking about it. One of the first things I did after I got back was to go to a theater and see Star Wars (it was still playing in theaters.) I was sitting there with my Coke and chocolate raisins enjoying this space western, when Darth Vader appeared on screen. My stomach instantly clenched into a knot, I got what felt like an electric shock of adrenaline, and the words "Fuck! It's him!" went through my mind. Probably already mentioned, but Yoda remains one of the absolute best physical puppet characters ever created for a motion picture. (Gollum being the digital equivalent) He was designed by the legendary Stuart Freeborn, who described the process as "sitting in front of a mirror with a photo of Albert Einstein beside me". The reason Yoda is SO believable and charming is because 1) He was operated (and voiced!) by none other than Kermit himself: Frank Oz. 2) How Mark Hamill interacts and engages with what is basically just a Muppet. 3) The way Director Irvin Kershner shot the scenes involving Yoda at basically eye-level, and having slots built into the studio floor enabling Yoda to move around. All these factors makes for timeless movie magic.

    "The Empire Strikes Back" is, hands down, THE BEST film in the Star Wars saga! That's why you liked it so much -- the best story, the best cinematography, the best humor, and THE BEST REVEAL IN MOVIE HISTORY! It was the best written, the best directed and the best scored of them all (with The Imperial March, and the romantic theme for Han and Leia). It is still to this day my favorite movie of all time, not just my fav Star Wars episode. And BTW, you mentioned the confidence to title the first as Episode IV, etc., when, in fact, the title of Episode IV- A New Hope was added years later, after the major success in 1977, and Lucas knew he could then continue with more films.

    The film quality looks so good, because it was shot on actual film. 35mm low iso film actually holds more detail than most digital sensors can pull these days (about 110mb per shot). It's why the 1870 portrait photo of Bismark on medium format film has such crazy detail. Combined with in the 2000s they did high res scans of the film reels and cleaned it up again (you can do that very well with film due to films insane detail and recoverability). I love film, and wish more movies still used it. One of my favorite films is "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" which has an homage to film and was shot on film in the late 2000s. I carry around my 1981 Nikon F3 and shoot a lot of film.

      Sadly, the cost of movie film is such that only the largest movies can afford it now. 11 minutes of 35mm movie film comes in around $1k-$1500 to shoot, develop, and scan. Take your roll of 35mm for your Nikon and consider that's about 1 second worth of a movie.

Even people who have never seen Star Wars know it or have heard it because it became part of the pop culture lexicon. That was completely absent. The same was true when Empire Strikes Back came out a few years later. It wasn’t called “Episode V”, it was just Empire Strikes Back. Nobody knew they would be coming out with all of these sequels and prequels. Same for when Return of the Jedi came out. Nobody knew it as “Episode VI”. They only started to re-label them as Episodes when they started coming out with the prequels. When the first prequel came out, they called it Episode I, and at the same time they also relabeled the original Star Wars as “Episode IV”, Empire Strikes Back as “Episode V”, and Return of the Jedi as “Episode VI”.

    The ships they use to fight the AT-AT Walkers on Hoth are airspeeders (commonly called snowspeeders), they mentioned they were having trouble adapting them to the cold when Han asked if they could use them to search for Luke.
    The ship Luke uses to fly around is an X-Wing, the same as the one he used to destroy the Death Star, the wings just fold down when he’s not in combat. You can see them opening in the original when Red Leader says, “Lock s-foils in attack position.”
    The bounty hunter chasing Han is called Boba Fett, he’s got much more mythology and backstory than is shown in the movies. His ship is called Slave I, it’s a very unique design, even for a Star Wars ship.

    A note about the X-Wing appearance:
    X-Wings have four "wings" or "S-foils" which can be "closed" or "opened," depending on the situation. During combat, the foils are "opened" (giving it the "X" appearance). The opened wings keep the four laser cannons (one per wing tip) from being too close so they don't overheat. It also increases aerodynamic drag, allowing for greater maneuverability in atmospheric flight. For non-combat situations or flights, the foils are "closed" (as shown here), which provides increased speed. However, the cannons won't fire in this configuration.
    The ships used during the Battle of Hoth are "T-47 speeders" or "snowspeeders." They're a different type of ship, and can't fly outside of atmospheres.

I remember that it was called "Star Wars" and there was no "episode 4" and no "A New Hope" in the title. It was nice called "Star Wars". Then when the first movie did so good and they decided to do more movies, that's when they added the " Episode 4 A New Hope" to the title and they started making this movie "Empire Strikes Back". I would tell you more but this comment is getting really long already. I'm really glad that you're enjoying these movies. It's amazing that these movies have been around for 47 years. Empire by far is my favorite Star Wars movie. It’s a shame that the big twist is now ingrained in pop culture so much that many people going into the movie for the first time already knows it. As a kid I saw it and I had no clue it was coming and even when it happened I was like “is it true? Is he lying? I mean he is evil so it might be a lie.”

    For the longest time I assumed that the first movie retained the title "Star Wars", and that it was only with the mid-90s rereleases that it was it was retitled to Episode 4. But you know what it is to assume this, "just making an ass out of u and me" (ha ha), I just looked it up before leaving this comment: Lucas re-distributed the movie in 1981, changing the name on the title sequence to 'Episode IV: A New Hope' from 'Star Wars'. Interesting stuff 🤓
    It was fun watching your reaction video btw, the first time in over a decade since I got to experience someone else watching this movie for the first time! I probably haven't watched it since before COVID, I've seen it so many times though I'll never be able to capture the joy of having forgotten most to it and rediscovering it :(

    What people don't realize is that Vader never actually kills Obi-Wan. He disappears right before the lightsaber strikes. He became one with The Force.

      wrong, the light saber did kill him, they just didnt have good special effects back then to show it, so easier to do it that way.

    • @KeldorDAntrell
      @KeldorDAntrell 7 месяцев назад +1

      Then why did Obi-Wan remark that *if Vader strikes him down* he would "become more powerful than you can possibly imagine"? He said those words because he knew that either he would strike Vader down or Vader would strike him down (with 'striking one down' meaning 'killing'). We all know from the subsequent films that no one becomes 'one with the force' until they are dead; death is the 'doorway' into the next state of the jedi's existence. So, Obi-Wan *had* to have been killed by Vader. No one chooses to disappear and become one with the force. If they could, why would Obi-Wan wait until Vader swung his lightsabre at him? Why would he fight him at all? He could have toyed with Vader, dancing this way and that without even drawing his lightsabre, all to distract him while the others got to the Falcon and escaped. Then he could disappear and leave Vader confused. This didn't happen. He fought Vader, tried his best to beat him, and got cut down.

    • @KeldorDAntrell
      @KeldorDAntrell 7 месяцев назад

      @@brianm2238 You're correct that he was killed but I'm not sure they didn't have the special effects to show it better. I think Lucas made the decision to have Obi-Wan disappear as quickly as he did to avoid the otherwise inevitable unpleasantness of seeing him cut in two, the parts dropping heavily to the floor, and then disappearing a moment later. It would certainly have been possible to do it that way *but* it would probably have been too horrific to get the family audience certification that was wanted.

    • @HenryLoenwind
      @HenryLoenwind 6 месяцев назад +1

      You have to realise that when two force users fight, it's not a swordfight. Those lightsabers are just a means to damage the opponent when one hits. The real fight is invisible; it's a struggle to control the force around them. What Obi-Wan does is relinquish all control over the force and instead become one with it. He lets go (in a way a dark-side user never could) and uses the pressure Darth Vader employs on the force to help him along.
      Yoda is a true master. He doesn't need help, he's in an emotional state where he can let go completely. As is (ep6 reference), although for different reasons. But Obi-Wan needs the additional push---he isn't that different from any other force-user who ever died and we don't see all of them hanging around.
      So, what's pushing him over the edge isn't the lightsaber. It's Vader taking control over the force not just around but inside his body. The lightsaber hits a couple of moments later, but then Obi-Wan already has dissolved into the force.

    This movie caused the audience to scream when Darth Vader said he is Luke's father! The movie became a classic on that last line alone. Darth Vader did not kill Luke. He used the Jedi method of cutting off his hand. The lightsaber cut the hand but it chorterized the wrist. Jedi's were forbidden to kill. Okay next is Return Of The Jedi! Can't wait to see it!
