      It's funny.
I was 11 when ROTJ came out.
I was old enough to be fully immersed in Star Wars, and cognizant of a lot of details, but young enough to never see Leia as a sex symbol.
I always loved Leia as a character.
I suppose if I had been 5 or 10 years younger, I would not have been "along for the ride" with the original generation of Star Wars fans. If, however I had been 5 years older, I would likely have been much more impacted by seeing Leia in her "carbonite bikini".

Darth Vader is played by 4 people in the original trilogy:
    1. the body is former champion bodybuilder, David Prowse
    2. the sword, Olympic fencer and stunt choreographer,
    Bob Anderson
    3. the face, force ghost Anakin and helmet removal scene is Sebastian Shaw, Hayden Christensen was added after the prequels
    4. the voice.. Vader would be far less intimidating without the amazing voice work of James Earl Jones

    • @jbfox100

Prowse basically screwed himself out of being the face. It was originally shot with him and I remember him leaking the info to the press that he was finally going to be seen. Lucas then reshot the scene with Shaw.

Every time I see the special edition of this film I just groan with Vader saying “no”. Originally he didn’t say anything before turning on the emperor. To me it works so much better that way, a man silently in a struggle within himself and in that silence seeing his son being murdered sacrifices himself to save his son.
Way better than the very operatic “nooooo!”

100%! I hate all the "Special Editions". Not only do they make the story weaker but ironically the CGI has not stood up as well as the practical effects. The wampa scene in the ice cave was better before when you couldn't really see it, Han and Greedo scene was better (much better arc for Han), the Jabba scene outside the Falcon was stupid and superfluous, etc., and as you say the "no" takes away from that scene.
That is what happens when there is nobody around that will say no to George... we get the "Special Editions" and the PT.

I watched this in 1983, and back then there was no CGI beak for the Sarlacc, it was just a pit lined with teeth and tentacles, the dance routine was merely Oola dancing for him, and then spurning his advances hence why she was fed to the Rancor in the pit underneath Jabba's throne room, Vader was silent when he finally changed sides and saved Luke grabbing the Emperor and throwing him over the edge. The CGI beak and the song and dance routine and Vader shouting no before he acts, were added for the Special Edition releases in 1997. He also added the celebrations across the galaxy to the Special Edition, and further tweaked this by adding Christian Hayden in a 2004 update.
The original celebrations just the the Rebel and the Ewoks celebrating back on the Forest Moon with the Ewoks "Jub Jub" song.

The Jabba scene in A New Hope was originally shot with a human actor playing Jabba, who Lucas intended to replace via bluescreen with a stop-motion animated creature. He ran out of time and couldn't make it the way he wanted, so he cut the scene. In 1997 the scene was added back in for the Special Edition of the movie(along with other changes), using a CGI Jabba that looked like crap. In 2004 for the DVD release a new, better-looking CGI Jabba which is what you see now. In the original scene Han walked behind the human actor, with the CGI Jabba the footage was manipulated to make it look like Han is stepping on Jabba's tail.

_A long time ago, in a movie theater about five miles away ..._
    *EPISODE VI*
*JABBA THE HUTT, THE GOVERNOR, AND THE BANGIN' NEW SOUND SYSTEM*
I saw _Return of the Jedi_ in the Stuart (now Roccoco) Theater in Lincoln, Nebraska. She took up the first six floors of the 10-story Stuart Building.
Like many theaters of her era, the Stuart had once been a live theater later converted to cinema. She originally hosted the local symphony orchestra, theatrical companies, operas, touring companies, vaudeville, etc.
When she was converted to cinema, they sold her backstage area. Today, it's a theater-themed night club: _The Barrymore_ .
The Stuart was one of those Grand Dame theaters: six stories high, three balconies, box seats, hand woodworking, and gold and silver inlays everywhere. There was a gigantic chandelier over the main floor. She seated 1,850.
She was truly a beautiful sight to behold.
At the time I saw _Jedi_ , she had a bangin' new sound system -- which is a good time for a flashback ...
_Slightly longer ago, at a High School about three miles away ..._
It was my Senior year in High School, and I was several days from graduating.
The school held an assembly to acknowledge honor students, which I wasn't. Along with hundreds of other students, I'd be bored out of my mind for the next three hours.
Then it hit me, like a flash of lightning:
_The Stuart Theater is offering free admission to an obscure movie, so that they can show off her bangin' new sound system_ .
After weighing my options, I decided to go do the Stuart Theater. I mean, what were they going to do, give me detention? I was graduating in a few days!
As everyone else went to the school auditorium, I went in the opposite direction, to the school's main exit.
However, as I was walking down the hall, who should be approaching but the Principal, two Vice-Principals, and the Governor of the State of Nebraska. The Governor was scheduled to give some kind of speech about how wonderful life is and we have so much ahead of us, blah blah blah.
I assumed my goose was cooked. The Principal and his Vices knew precisely where I was supposed to be, and it wasn't headed out the door.
What I hadn't counted on was that admonishing me in front of the Governor would be embarrassing for the Principal. I'm sure they told the Governor how squeaky-clean the school was, how the students are all fantastic, how there were never any problems, etc. To admonish me would be to destroy the propaganda.
So we simply passed each other. I politely said hello to the Governor and nodded to the Principal and his Vices. They gave me angry hellos between clenched teeth.
And then I walked out the door, hopped in my Chevy Chevette, and went to the Stuart.
_Meanwhile, back at Return of the Jedi ..._
The Stuart's bangin' new sound system was not only bangin', it was astonishing. Imagine hearing Maestro John Williams' brilliant score as it shook the entire theater. It was no less impressive than a live performance by the London Symphony Orchestra.
But that wasn't even the half of it. When Jabba had his first line, " *Bo shudda* ," the bass shook the rafters and thundered throughout the whole building.
I recall being in the middle seat, of the first row, of the first balcony with some friends. The floor and guardrail shook like a minor earthquake.
It doesn't matter how good your home sound system is, the music isn't reverberating the steel support beams of a 10-story building.
I sat there for two hours just waiting for good bass, and was never disappointed. I mean, at the very least there was the London Symphony Orchestra performing the score, as composed and conducted by Maestro John Williams!
So while this wasn't as immersive as the Indian Hills Theater for _A New Hope_ , it was sill impressive!
    *Bo shudda!*

I stand by that this is one of the greatest redemption stories of all time when it comes to Vader, counterintuitively.
This guy was practically the boogeyman of Star Wars. He was ruthless, cruel, and vicious in his conquests, both to his enemies and his allies. There is not one instance in the three movies where it's even hinted at that there is still good in him, he doesn't do a single good thing. The most we get is that he used to be a good man. But Luke is the first and only one to say he still is.
And every reactor says the same thing when Luke says it "What the hell are you thinking?"
Then Luke and Vader talk on the bridge and we get the first sign of humanity from Vader. "It is...too late for me, son." The way James Early Jones delivers that line is so subtle but implies the emotions going through his head. Then the scene ends with Vader looking off in the distance, and the body language is such that there is some sadness to him, or else a longing on what could have been.
But we still see no evidence of good in him. But inevitably by the time the Emperor is electrocuting Luke, every reactor does the same thing. "COME ON!!! SAVE HIM!!!" He does. And it is the sole proof that we as an audience need that Luke was right.
People go from thinking it's crazy to think Vader would do this for his son to begging Vader themselves and feeling so in awe and relief that he actually does. And many are in tears by the time of Vader's funeral. I repeat, the absolutely terrifying, imposing, villain who was part of an evil fascist dictatorship makes people cry at his funeral.
I'm actually shocked at how effective of a change this is to get through to so many people with so little. And I fully credit this to visual filmmaking and a certain style of storytelling that is fading into obscurity where you didn't need a full backstory to understand a character

a number of things were added after the prequel trilogy was complete: in the original, Vader was completely silent when he killed the Emperor, his Force Ghost was Sebastian Shaw (the guy inside the Vader suit) , they only showed Tatooine & Endor (rather than Naboo, Coruscant, Tattooine, Bespin, Endor and Tatooine,) celebrating the victory and they used an entirely different (and much better, imo) victory song in said celebration.

Glad you finally got to meet the Ewoks. The primary Ewok Leia meets was supposed to be played by Kenny Baker, the actor who plays R2-D2 when he dances, but he was ill the day they shot the scene. The part was instead played by an 11 year old actor with dwarfism named Warwick Davis. Return of the Jedi was his first movie. In his honor, the Ewok is named Wicket W. Warwick. A lot of his mannerisms (the head tilts mostly) are based on his grandmother’s dog and the way it reacted to strange noses.

When this came out, Darth Vader came to my local store to sign autographs in the gardening section. (I associate the smell of peat moss with Vader to this day!) He had a blue Bic biro pen in his leather-gloved hand and I was so impressed that the Empire used Bic biros just like the rest of us. He finished signing and swept through all the plants and flower pots in his long, black cloak. Impressive, most impressive.

Leia was not originally going to be Luke's sister. Luke's sister was instead going to be someone we never meet in the original trilogy. She was going to be the subject of sequels. She was going to be someone already turned to the dark side, and the trilogy was going to be Luke travelling to an as yet unseen part of the galaxy to try to turn her back like he did with his father.
However, Lucas said he had so many struggles and issues with just trying to get the original three films made that by the time he got to Return of the Jedi he just wanted to be done with Star Wars altogether, and so during preproduction he changed the story to make Leia the sister. It works as long as you don't think too much about it. A sequel trilogy about Luke's sister would have been much better though

I don't buy Lucas' version of that completely because shortly after we here there is another in Ep. 5, Luke reaches out to Leia with the force and she senses him, leading the audience to believe she is the other Skywalker. All well before Ep. 6.

      3. Also had Yoda encouraging “the other” to come out of the closet… and it was going to be Lando!

It is right....The first movie was written without a plan going forward. They didn't expect it to blow up like it did. So the whole brother/sister thing was not a thought when A New Hope was done. Also back in those times (70's/early 80's) kissing on the lips of family members, and sometimes even friends was a more common thing.

On the Leia and Luke being siblings thing. I'll give them credit that it was not the original plan. If it was, I think they would have worked it differently, obviously.
That being said, I do think the twist is important. I used to be able to explain this thought well, and I'm not able to anymore, so bear with me.
Luke's story goes from "Can Luke defeat this great evil" to "Will Luke become this great evil" and then to "Can Luke save Vader?" That last question cannot be addressed until the second one is, and we know Luke well enough that the only thing that would cause him to turn is his love for his friends and family. Vader therefore needs a reason to go after someone in Luke's life, but someone who is terribly important. Leia being Luke's sister is the most dangerous role she could have. It's not just that she's going to be killed, they're going to try to turn her (for anyone who knows what goes into that training, not fun). So not only does this add a level of protection on Luke's side for her, it paints a target on her back much worse than before, and Luke knows it. If she was just someone he cared about who happened to be force sensitive, Vader and the Emperor wouldn't have pursued her half as much as they would knowing she's Vader's child. This was their trump card and it's the only thing that could have pushed Luke to the dark side as it so nearly does. I
And when he is pushed to the dark side, and he sees that he is following Vader down his path, that's the moment of truth. The moment Luke wins by denying his destiny and throwing his lightsaber away, and without which Vader could not have been turned.
On a side note, someone came up with an in universe explanation on Luke and Leia "knowing" they were siblings. They theorized that they felt a connection to each other through the Force but didn't know what it was, so they assumed it was attraction. But when Leia kissed Luke, they felt something was wrong and so they didn't pursue it any further. Quite frankly, it's the only explanation I've heard that makes it less weird

I appreciate your comments asking about what it was like to see these originally in theaters. When these came out. you couldn't watch them on demand; once they were out of the theaters, you just had to wait. wait. wait. wait. For the next one. If there would be a next one. I spent three weeks allowance money to buy the double vinyl soundtrack! I think many in my age range (mid-50s) like "Empire" because it was the first movie after the original. The build-up to its release was unimaginably anticipated. "A New Hope" could have been a stand-alone, one-and-done, but when you heard the second was coming - wow. And we waited years. "Empire" was great because it didn't have the expected feel-good ending. The downer meant that another was coming.
"Return" was feel good IMO, but ultimately, because so many years elapsed among the original trilogy films, we have a different way of looking at them. I was 10 years old when I saw "New Hope", 13 at "Empire", 16 at "Return". Formative years in a boy's life and completely colors the way I view these.
I'm glad you have the ability to watch them one after the other. I could only have dreamt of world where that could happen!
    Cheers!
